The Very Unique 2002 Lincoln Blackwood Will Be a Collectible - But How Collectible Will It Be?

- The Lincoln Blackwood seemed a sure thing for Ford - The Navigator was selling well, the American appetite for luxury pickups had already been established, and - well - the damn thing was pretty cool.
Instead, it flopped - badly. Ford had expected to make 18000 of them across two model years, and the actual numbers fell short of that -- by a lot. In total, only 3356 Blackwoods were made, and the program was cancelled after only one model year in the United States (two in Mexico). How could this happen?
For one, Ford misjudged how the market would react to a truck that had very little in terms of what makes a traditional truck useful - payload, versatility, and the ability to handle terrain - these were available in 2WD only, drove more like a car than a truck, and had a "bed" that you'd be scared to put anything rougher than soft-sided luggage in. It was a four door truck that handled only four passengers, and cost more than $75K in 2020 dollars - in retrospect, one wonders how Ford ever dreamed this concept car turned production machine would work.
So it's now relegated to the collector car market, after years spent trading to people at greatly diminished prices. A lot of these trucks past to owners who used them up, put lots of miles on them, and let them deteriorate cosmetically while mechanical maintenance slid. A fair number of the 3356 were lost to being used the same way one might an F150. That custs down even further on an already rare pool of fine examples for collectors to purchase.
But will they be very collectible? I think so. They check off a lot of the boxes - a luxury maker, they were expensive, ahead of their time, V8 powered, have a cool rear-end bed gimmick, and most of all - very few are out there. I expect to see prices rise over time, and less of them to find their way to the market.

Don't ever change man. The first few lines are priceless.
1:00 heh heh..."good morning this is Bill from Curious Radar Tracking Stations"?
I'm enjoying these videos. No need for cable.
I'm honored, but still a terrible substitute for The Kardashians.
@@curiouscars9282 watching paint dry is better then the Kardashians
Cable will be dead soon. Way too expensive for crappy channels
@@ItsTheCostanza 💯. Dropped my cable and home phone about 6 months ago. Have an updated WiFi router from Verizon Fios and stream everything
Agreed. I also agree that goats are terrifying.
Everyone misses the point of this....it’s a Lincoln Town Car that has a 27% bigger trunk in the shape of a truck. Just think about it.
And more head room! Lmfao 😂
Its a handicapped F150 in a gimp suit
Town Cars have better build quality
I was going to go to the gym after work but Bill and this oddball truck together mandates wine.
The GOAT of car reviewers.
Ducks , plastic wood & shitty weather : Bill suffers daily for his art !
It's a piece of 💩
I was heading back home from a motorcycle trip about 10 yrs ago and on my last hotel stopover there was a very nice older couple from Ocala Fl in one of these. I looked it over with the gentleman owner. He was quite proud of it and pointed out its rarity. It was rather unique at least and obviously he adored it.
This is a vehicle straight out of a Vacation movie.
A rolling joke of itself.
Wow this is great...within a week of each other you and Doug Demuro review a blackwood. This is awesome
I'd never even heard of it before, and then just as you stated, two reviews in one week! ;)
Bill...you are quietly the BEST auto reviewer in the GAME!!! Keep it up homie👍
One of my all time favorite trucks! What a fantastic example, I love seeing and learning about all the different types of vehicles you select. Keep up the great work🙌
Thanks Bill. You always make my day. Don't ever change.
Hey Bill, sorry it is muggy, here in Manchester UK were are having a mini heatwave 22C. Fantastic pick-up truck
I owned #201 and I loved it! I pulled my 27-foot express cruiser with it very abley and it was 8000 pounds. Loved the air ride suspension. The mistake Lincoln made was to not emphasize that just because it was truck shaped, it was not a truck. Trunk is truly the correct term, not bed. Although I did haul 1200 pounds of travertine marble 20-inch squares in it and it handled it well. I lined the floor of the trunk with a canvas drop cloth before loading it up. Much easier than in a car trunk!
Bill I love these videos. Give me a toy car at 3yrs old, my late mother said i would amuse myself for hours, scraping out little roads on mounds of dirt and flat spots for pretend houses. I retired at 68 from a career of building roads, residential subdivisions, high-end luxury homes, and commercial properties in San Diego, Las Vegas, and Tulsa. And I still love my cars and trucks, and have always had a 3-car garage for my Lincoln, my Corvette, and my Ford F150 FX4. All of them black, with black leather.
The breadth and depth of your knowledge of the cars and the auto industry amazes me. I only recently found you on CZcams, and now intend to watch every single video you have made. I don't share your aversion to animals, but I love straightforward, in-your-face people like you, and no doubt you have very good reasons for it.
I share your take on politics and culture, and love your free-association style of discourse. Thank you for hours of pure enjoyment.
I love all of your reviews! It feels like I'm actually sitting here having a conversation with you. Awesome as usual!
I love all your reviews.... just brings me right in with you!
Love what I am learning from you Bill, about life and American cars. Keep posting
And LORETTA LYNN!
Thanks for the video Bill!! I’ve been watching since the Europa Naples days.
My sentiments Exactly, Bill. The blackwood makes no sense whatever, as a pickup, but it has a strange draw. You can't help but like it, but whatcha gonna do with it? Only use for it is hauling your golf clubs & tennis racket! LoL
Had a man that we shared our stables with who used his for farm work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I can’t tell you how many bails of hay we tossed from the back of it’s, trunk?? Lol it made absolutely NO sense to me.
I love your commentary on these vehicles on your channel! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for blessing us Papa Bill
Love these trucks
They're a guilty pleasure for me.
Papa Bill? The places he suggests children ride or restores leads me to believe that if he had kids, they didn't last long. LOL
@@michaelwhite2823 he’s friends with Daddy Doug
Ditto what Marcus said, keep the ramble coming, it keeps me sane, I love it.
I remember seeing one or two of these running around my part of the Arkansas Ozarks back in the day. Couldn't believe I was seeing a LINCOLN truck. Nobody else believed me until they saw one for themselves. Great review. Thankfully it has plenty of gun storage.
FANTASTIC gun storage!!! I cannot get enough of Bill!!!
Looks like a fine piece to any funeral home 😀
What a nice pickup.
I wish Lincoln still made pickups.
they failed miserably
Nice review. I enjoyed the highway cruise ending!
That is awesome, love it.hello fron Nova Scotia, 🇨🇦.
That truck looks really good in your driveway. Thanks for the reviews, they're perfect
Congrats on getting your hands on this great find Bill!
Man, you're getting up there with the honesty & charm levels of Doug Demuro and regular for car reviews! Hell yeah bro!
He's much funnier than Doug!
@@Andrew.W75 Its probably more monetarily reasonable to the pg format that doug goes with and hand gestures. Gotta pay off that big house and Ford GT somehow. 😆
Doug Demuro is horrible in every possible way. That guy literally knows nothing about cars and is just a voice for the brainwashed out there. Bill is on another pleatuea with no comparison at all.
Not only can goats swim, but they've also been known to cover great distances, using their unlikely hooves to propel them through the water..
The Lincoln BLACKWOOD IS a beautiful vehicle. And you made a great choice showing it and it is collectible already
This is a cool Truck....I love unique vehicles....One of my favorites you did years back was an 03 Marauder ...stuff when it was out people passed right by ...Just cool stuff....
The last time I was this early Bill was still raging over the truck modifications of his previous detailer!
Love mine after 20 years.no issues. Yes only summer driven.still in show room condition.Bough mine in Florida and drove to Timmins Ontario.Canada.Never seen another one, since.Love all the comments and the offers to buy everytime I pull it out.Yes I do have a real truck sitting beside it.It is doing the job I Bough it for.No regrets.
beautiful truck and beautiful weather down there . great truck grocery getter
I just love watching your videos.....
You always have so much history of the vehicles you have for sale....
Only wished I had the cash to buy the rides y'all have...
Im a car guy, so I love hearing about cars in general. What I love the most is the sound of a engine and the sound of a great exhaust....
Keep up the great vids.
Looking forward to your next vid.
Peace
Love what ya do! Keep going :)
I was a Zone Manager for Ford Motor Company in the Lincoln Mercury Division in the Seattle Region in 2001 - 2003. I had one as my fleet vehicle. We waited and waited for it to be launched. It was delayed over and over. I think first it was the trunk you open & close with the FOB. Next the French doors didn't open and close properly. I'm not sure how many trunks still open with the FOB and the ones I see online, the Nav system screen is smashed. When I drove it all I got was thumbs up, non-stop. It was a sharp looking truck. We were upset in the Northwest Region because it was 2WD only. A lot of them ended up in the "smile states" as we called them, Georgia, Florida, across the South to California. All my dealers took whatever allocation I had on them though, they wanted them even though they were bitter about the delayed launch and the 2WD only. Elena Ford, yep, a "Ford" came in at the same time leading Mercury and she launched the Mercury Maurader. I have a Mercury Maurader jacket that I won from Ford for being a good Zone Manager, not sure what I did, but I'm positive it was for moving all of the allocation. The blackwood will freak people out in another 10 -20 years, there was nothing like it and nothing since. Quirky, and most man's men said it was useless. 2WD and you couldn't put anything in the back of a carpeted bed! I loved it and am looking to buy one.
Bill, looks like your "living the dream" down there! thanks so sharing on the cars..
This is an absolutely beautiful vehicle. It’s a superior towing vehicle and that trunk is cool. Had I been old enough to have the money to buy one when it was available.. I would have. I own two beautiful Ram 1500 trucks but as nice as they are they don’t compare to the Blackwood. And I never use the bed anyway... I just love riding in my v8 truck.
Bill, the bed is a beautiful infant/ toddler containment box! 😂😂😂
You really know your stuff, Bill. So informative. In a little over a year or so, I will be looking to buy a classic car of some sort. Your trustworthy. Hopefully there won't be any goats on the lot those days.
I love it when you tell the history of a car or truck and, the history of the manufacturer and the designer of the vehicle. It was bad marketing due to the company advertising.
It would be a great tow vehicle for an Airstream!
I was thinking the exsact same thing.
Two days in a row! How lucky are we!
Bill you look great, I don't think anyone would mess with you!
Good morning Bill. Starting my day with you again. Enjoy yours my friend
I soooo love these Blackwood trucks. They remind me of mid 70s American luxury cars like Lincoln MarkV and big Thunderbirds.
Definitely collectible and so many gun storage compartments.. Great review as always.
Hey Bill, I am BIG fan of your channel. I watch your videos all the time- I find them incredibly educational! You know your stuff! I don't want this to sound creepy but I feel like we were perhaps separated at birth or something lol. I, too, am going through an old-country music phrase right now- to the point where I ordered a Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn CD online last week and it was shipped to me yesterday. I daily drive a 2002 Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas, and I think classic country music and a classic Jaguar go quite nicely together. Being Irish-Catholic (and half Polish), I enjoy drinking a strong Irish whiskey from time to time- And I can think of no better way to end the work week then to turn off my Fox News, pop in a classic country CD, drink a Jameson and smoke a cigar all while wearing my Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirt.
Their intention was definitely to produce a "Navigator with a bed" rather than a luxury F-150. Always loved them and thought it was brilliant.
The 5.4 InTech DOHC engines were so ridiculously reliable and were used as the basis of the Cobra R and Ford GT's engines.
When these first came I say these as the coolest. Still do. Something about the aluminum and carpeted trunk.
Those 5.4’s were not reliable at all though
@@dr.lyleevans6915 you're thinking of the later 3valve 5.4. These older 2 valve models are very solid.
@@dr.lyleevans6915 The 2 valves in these were great motors.
@@CrossingRover Ohh, you are right. My apologies !
I always loved the look of those trucks.
Oh Bill, had me cracking up over the damn toilet console.
6:51 I am watching from Graz, Austria, my dad works at Magna Steyr and I worked there too in my summer breaks. It really is a automotive city with many automotive companies.
Thanks for the excellent review with all your unique comments, opinions and history. The very end surprised me. I haven't heard Six Days On The Road by Dave Dudley in ages. Pretty sure I have the 45 of that tune.
Bill’s getting fancy with the filming techniques, unintentional Dutch angle at 6:03!
Hey Bill a beautiful pick up. Nice job bro
Great pick up truck, I seen Dougs video and now yours :)
Nice vehicule, never seen it before. Would love to drive one in Europe
His channel is growing!!
Premiered right after Doug Demuro’s video! Perfect timing.
Hey Bill keep your videos as long as you want the longer the better we all enjoy them and I'm just like you I lived in Tampa since 95 and I can't stand the hot weather here I'm from Massachusetts where we get about 2 weeks of Summer and that's even too hot for me but I do love the winners in Florida where it's somewhat cool
My navigation screen is in the back seat, and I use it all the time while I'm driving!
HYSTERICAL..."Playpen for the Kids in the Bed". LOL LOL I Love You Bill. :) :)
Mel Bch 🌴 Nice example. Great commentary as usual Bill. 👌 🏄
Thanks for this one, Bill.. You know, I remember these. Attractive, but as you pointed out, not that practical, unless you have toddlers. They'll be fine in the "trunk". Meanwhile, over at Cadillac, their version of the Chevrolet Avlanche, the Esclade EXT was a virtual clone of that with one important difference. The Avalanche was available with true 4WD, with transfer case and a 4Lo setting, whereas the Cadillac went with AWD. I had the '07 Avalanche in LTZ trim, and it was dressed out nearly as nice as the Caddy, but with loads of functionality with the GM midgate deal where you can remove the rear window entirely and lower the back seat for pass-through access. Very cool stuff. That Blackwood is a looker though.. I wish they had used real wood, that would have been truly epic.
Bill love these reviews your comedy & well known info is great & sir your personality you could sell I've water to an Eskimo!👍🤣
So beautiful today in Kentucky; 72, clear blue skies, and low humidity (for now)
I promise you will HATE the cold! Especially when you get older lol.
Always loved the Blackwood and Mark LT!
Thanks for another great video, Bill. I never understood this truck ... the stripes alone ... just odd
My sister bought a 2002 Blackwood and still drives it today. She *LOVES* this truck. Said she wants to be buried in it, and I don’t think she’s joking…
This is a very interesting vehicle 🤔. I would drive it for sure. BTW you're a good driver 👍.
A cassette adaptor, never heard or sean that but this is so awesome
More whiskey for me now Bill's uploaded again, it would be rude not too.
Bill is the best for talking about cars like the videos
I saw one of these just yesterday at a ranch. Bed was piled high with fence materials (tonneau was gone) and it was filthy.
Just bought one today😁
Another great review by Bill!
I remember watching American Hot Rod back in the day and Boyd Cottington had one of these Blackwoods. I always wondered what they Hell he was thinking for paying $60K for a gussied up F150 that lost almost all of its usefulness.
You are awesome 👌 👏 i love your videos...lol
I think this car was ahead of its time. Back then it was hard to wrap one’s brain around a luxury truck. Not now. A Lincoln luxury truck will sell well nowadays.
Bill,, How does one install a non removable bed cover..
At the factory....
Hope it will be a classis because I have one. This is a very nice pickup.
Crates of Paté! Love it!
Hey Bill have u ever driven a 1988 /1992 era mk7 lsc?
Love it
I love your description of the vehicles and how much??
Nice truck.
i cant imagine complaining about heat im in minnesota the cold is hell here never stops it was 24 this morning in spring and its very inconsistent one day its 70 and sunny then 30 and cloudy then snow and 20 then back to 70 with thunderstorms all in one week
Hey man Pennsylvania is the same way lol although not as extreme. I can tell you were joking 😂😂
@@tommybuick2209 🤣🤣🤣 that's what it feels like over here man it's a nice state but the weather not for me i ain't built for it
I think if they made they gave it optional 4wd, and just made the top removable and offering a more rugged bed lining and tuned the suspension for more performance or maybe even a blower like Bill said and marketed it as a sports luxury pick up I think this really could have taken off
My dad owns a 2006 lincoln Mark LT 182k miles great truck.
Those had the most comfortable looking seats ever haha
Bill, you can come to Minnesota in June and July to cool off. 😎
I love these early Lincoln 🚚 trucks Bill! Come on up to the Smokey Mountains where I live. It's cooler weather. I can't guarantee you won't see a 🐐 goat. 😂
It's 72f here in the UK. Hottest march day for 53 years &no humidity. In Philippines where my wife's from is never cold not even chilly weather you might get in Florida. She's really chipper about our English weather cos she hated the sun.
I always thought with such a bed configuration that Lincoln should have design a 5’x8’ utility trailer option for the thing. Best of both Worlds.
This would make a nice vehicle for an Uber driver for the upper end of choice for passengers. Spacious interior and lots of cargo area for luggage. Plus you have a suspension that can hold up better than a car or a front wheel drive passenger van.
Oh my goodness, a Lincoln Blackwood!!! I am speechless, I need goats!!! If I was dead I'd be rolling over in my grave 😳🤪🥴
I like the thing and the drive afterward, Would like a ride at the racetrack in the Mazda Bill.
