Linux Mint and MX Linux are two of the hottest, two of the most popular Linux distributions today. They both have created their own, solid userbases of millions of people because of the things they offer.
MX Linux is a hyer powerful, performance driven system with one of the best toolings in an operating system I’ve seen yet. Honestly, this is a very powerful linux distro. It lets you do things that are not even possible on most other distros.
Linux Mint on the other hand, is known for a super polished, premium user experience. The desktop environment, the looks, the way of doing things here has been highly coveted and it’s that Linux Mint experience that has created such a loyal fan following for mint.
Both Mint and MX are top dogs in the linux scene. That’s for sure. But if you have to pick one which one should you go for?
To answer this, I installed both Mint and MX on my system and started my deep research. I compared all the aspects of these two distros like the performance, the software availability, user interfaces, stability, usability and a lot more.
And in this video, I’m gonna put it all in front of you, and we’ll finally see which of these two is the best, which of these two is more suitable for you. Linux Mint or MX Linux. - Věda a technologie
Been using MX on all my production machines since 2017. One very important point missed in the video is that the MX KDE edition is one of their "AHS" releases (advanced hardware support) -- which means that it gets updated kernels, firmware, mesa, etc so that MX can usually support the latest hardware. I just got my Framework laptop Ryzen upgrade motherboard, and using MX Snapshot, easily moved my MX23 KDE install (with 6.5 kernel) to the newly upgraded machine and everything works without a hitch - fingerprint reader, suspend, new AMD wireless, 7000series APU....it's been rock solid. Great video though!
Mint is Ubuntu but better. MX is debian but better. EndeavorOS is Arch but way better.
My 3 favorite distros
MINT is always the one I come back to.
Linux mint is the warm hug i like to go back home to after a day hating windows at work
mean you are noob here
cuz ubuntu sucks
linux dosen't mean ubuntu bro .l😂l
@@NonToxic404why?
And Manjaro for me
Rocking the latest Linux Mint on my 12yr old Acer laptop👍
Mint is like a plug and play distro - it just works
Heck yeah
I actually just switched from Arch to MX. I have been on Arch for many years, but got tired of a very specific pipewire related bug that just kept cropping up. So far so good with MX. I actually really love XFCE. The performance is second to none.
Also using xfce on MX. KDE is great , too.
Yes MX tools, mx snapshot, and the easy ability to install software from mx package installer are hard to beat.
MX-LINUX, Linux Mint, and Big Linux are my perfect trio. I usually seem to come back to Linux Mint, but now it has been Big Linux (Arch distribution). I still love MX linux mostly because of the all the innovative tools and simple package installer. It just works. Also you have access to all flatpaks and can use debian unstable if you really need to. Really Tuff and use depends on your needs. Glad I can virtualize them with in 1 distro.
For Me all things different. After years on Debian ( Netrunner) , try on my 12 years old ACER laptop Mint... MX.... Fedora.....,but stop on Arch. Everything work and laptop not freeze. XFCE is good . Second better distro is Alien OS with Regolith DE...
My son's computer has: Windows, Mint and MX.
My computer: MX, CachyOS, and a 3rd partition for distro sampling. If I had to choose one though, I would pick MX Linux. The MX tools are unmatched, and I personally feel in love with the MX snapshot tool that allows you to build your own ISO with all of your preferred apps installed by default.
Agreed mx tools, mx snapshot, and the easy ability to install software from mx package installer is hard to beat.
MX-LINUX, Linux Mint, and Big Linux are my perfect trio. I usually seem to come back to Linux Mint, but now it has been Big Linux (Arch distribution).
I currently use both MX and Mint. MX at work, and Mint at home. With Cinnamon desktop, Mint is much better than MX. Better software center, easier Nvidia driver installation, less bloated softwares, better WINE support are among the reasons why I choose Mint over MX. To be frank, with Mint Cinnamon, I don't need Windows 11. Fortunately, Proton supports game titles that I play regularly.
Installed MX 23 Xfce on my old laptop (2007). Initialy visual appeareance may be "the ugly Duckling" but if you put some effort it can become "a gorgeous swan". Installed legacy nvidia driver for GT8700m and no needed to worry for setings, MX tool did it for me. Another thing - managed to dual boot with X-lite 11. All was easy with no issues even for noob like me.
I have used both systems, although not in close comparison. Your review has honed my Linux sensitivity. After all these years, it is good practice. Thanks you.,
I have used Linux Mint for over 10yrs. Excellent operating system. Just repaired an old Pavilion g7-2269wm. Upgraded the cpu to a A-10 4600M and replaced the fan. Programed with Linux Mint 21.1 and its up and running. Total cost about $37.00.
A well thought through video. Long time Linux Mint user but MX does offer a lot. Like the coverage of tool sets the two have.
I had used several Linux distributions and customized MX is my choice. It is solid and have most tools that I need.
I switched from Windows to Ubuntu about 15 years ago. Soon after I found Linux Mint and I've stayed with that. I keep trying different distros in a VM or on my laptop but keep going back to Mint. I have seen your videos on MX linux and have been considering switching but haven't made the move yet.
Same, I used to distro hop but I keep coming back to Mint so I stopped hopping and stuck with Mint.
I did it, don't do it. It's not at all what it says it is. LM has more features to make the workflow easy.
Linux Mint is the one, I have used alot, a lot.
Now I'm curious to try MX Linux too.
I actually do use the panel vertically, using MX on my old Dell Inspiron 11 2 in 1. It saves real estate in full screened applications and Firefox on the smaller screen that the Inspiron 11 has, imho.
For taking a somewhat old laptop and making a great Linux netbook, MX is one of the best. I think the lack of a software/app store program will discourage newbies.
I always try Mint and such, but always come back to Mx Linux. For me, stability and performance trump aesthetics.
but sir which DE ??
there's no aesthethics loose if you just install compiz effects
@@Syewm Loose?
@@MaffeyZilog what i've meant is that you don't need to lose any aesthetics by using Xfce + Compiz instead of e.g. Cinnamon
Cumplo un año con Mx Linux, hasta el momento todo es estabilidad, no me ha causado ningún problema, funciona de maravilla, la recomiendo mucho.
I really want to switch from windows but I have 3 monitors with different resolutions that require different scaling factors each. This can only be achieved with "fractional scaling", but the performance hit is HARD even though I'm on a fairly modern system. Until they resolve that issue, I'm unfortunately sticking to windows.
Fantastic video. Motivated me to try MX Linux
the new look Linux MX is amazing, time to switch. Love the performance and UI
2:30 Where you get the wallpaper ? I like also MX wallpapers. Very minimalistic 8-)
BOTH EXTREMELY good..... dual boot them - that way you can enjoy BOTH... but if I were forced to pick--- MX...
I tried them both, but settled on KDE Neon. Latest Plasma and very minimal which I prefer.
Good video but you are comparing Mint Cinammon vs MX XFCE. It would be good to go over the supported out of box DE's for both distros, such as Mate and XFCE on Mint and KDE on MX.
Because KDE on MX is honestly great
Which hardware, (CPU and GPU), is recommended for your Linux box in order to run the OS most efficiently?
I have used both. I have used Mint since Mint Gloria now, but will most likely install MX again on my next rig. If just to have a robust KDE to play with. I would recommend either. If you like one you will like the other as well.
Gloria mint well. All's well that ends with a swell.
Switched to LMDE 6 Linux Mint Debian Edition, newer kernel with all the features and cinnomon desktop. Better range of hardware support as well.
Just created a MX on my VMware. Its my first time using Linux. Gonna make a MINT now so i can see the difference. It does have interesting tools but some of them feel outdated. Feels like im back in 05 06 looking at there playlist and CD burning icons.
When all distributions make it a standard to use the musl libc, it will be a huge difference in performance and memory footprint. For now, one have to DIY his desktop setup when using the musl libc instead of glibc as there is no distro out there that does it better out of the box than what linux mint and MX Linux have provided. All the glibc based distro - way too slow in terms of performance. If we really want better performance, it must be started from the ground up, at the foundation level of the compiled binary other than making programs more efficient. We have so much hardware power but we forget to optimize the software.
Good XFCE defaults but as always easy to change, great MX tools (but Mint's are no slouches). Also, they include the great *xfce4-docklike-plugin* substitute for 'window buttons' but it is not yet in the Debian repos.
I always install AHS support in Mint and any Debian based distro when available; I enjoy 'stable' but just added an Intel N100 mini pc so we'll see ....
Excellent 👌 Video and comparison. Great systems. I am a long term Ubuntu user😊
Personally, I wouldn't choose either of them. Linux Mint has basically become so stuck in the past to the point of missing out on many things most distros take for granted, like Wayland support (unless you use Nvidia GPUs, Wayland is 100% ready for use), better gaming support, and Mint 21.2 even uses an older kernel than Debian 12; not a good look for newer systems.
Also, since Mint 19, I haven't used Mint because they dropped Plasma as one of their supported DEs with that release despite many in the community still wanting it back.
Tuxedo OS or Feren OS are good picks for users that want KDE Plasma but want something similar to the former Linux Mint KDE flavor, while having newer kernel, feature, and hardware support.
👍
Wayland is NOT anywhere near 70 percent ready for use let alone 100 percent.
Not all scenarios work wirh it
@motoryzen It's not meant to be everything XOrg is. It's meant to be a leaner codebase without X and its baggage.
It's literally just Nvidia holding back Wayland now. If you have an AMD or Intel GPU, it works well. And you literally have XWayland for XOrg applications. Wayland also being leaner means less maintenance for things that the DE maintainers could implement such as one to one touchpad gestures.
XOrg has become impossible to maintain; as we have seen, almost all former X maintainers are now working on Wayland.
TL;DR: Wayland does 97% of what people need for desktop use. The 3% it doesn't do is baggage that XWayland can do, and really the only reason to not use Wayland nowadays is Nvidia GPUs.
@cameronbosch1213 if one can't game with it, and Some Content creation Software doesn't work with it. When you're talking about the dime. A dozen masses of people...
... Then what else is there other than basic PC usage such as email and browsing the Web and CZcams and trash book?
So no, wailyn is not 100% ready. It's not even 75% ready yet.
And some mushy's wine to run certain windows programs in Linux. Whyland has not proven itself a 100% consistently working well yet in that scenario.
@motoryzen But can XOrg even run displays at different refresh rates?
No. Wayland can.
Again, there's XWayland for those other cases Wayland isn't yet ready for. No wonder COSMIC and Budgie 11 will only support Wayland with XOrg support limited to XWayland. It works now, but it's not very maintainable for much longer.
Mint loses out for me because it is Ubuntu-based. I also like that MX Linux doesn't use systemd as its init by default, whilst still allowing applications that need systemd to run.
LMDE is great too, if you dislike Ubuntu, but I find it's always behind mainline Linux Mint, which is understandable it's the secondary base, but still, I wish it were updated faster with newer Cinnamon and Debian versions. I like Cinnamon more than xfce, so that might come in the equation....
@@CouldBeMathijs I'm the reverse - I prefer Xfce!
@@CouldBeMathijsI don't think it is even usable on medium hardware as it still ships 5.10 kernal
It is meant for old hardware
great video, i would like you compare the performance between mx linux vs Lubuntu.greetings
I run MX on a Macbook Pro 2013, and Mint on a 3015 Dell Precision 1700 workstation. I love them both.
I chose MX Linux because it is one of the few distributions that you can put on a 32-bit system as well as a 64-bit system. It will run on 20 year old hardware as well as a brand new system. As far as I know Linux Mint runs on only 64-bit hardware.
Linux Mint Debian Edition ALSO runs 32 and 64bit......IF they invest more time and energy into LMDE it would be better in many ways than MX.
@@eijentwun5509 does it still supportable in 32 bit brother!!
Aesthetics win it for me, and Mint is always the one that I return to after experimenting with other distros.
Linux Mint is far more intuitive for Linux newbies and has that professional polish Window users like without the crashes. Linux Mint Cinnamon is the Premium point and click Linux distro and is extremely intuitive for those who switch from Windows. Moms and pops just love Linux Mint! Flawless!
I tried linux MX but then switched to Linux Mint Mate, which is IMO better looking and runs well on low-powered systems.
It is a shame that there does not seem to be a quantitative, standardized way to compare the performance (reactiveness) of windows managers. I think it'd be good to have a benchmark suite, similar to the old Winbench 99, that simulates opening/closing windows, running programs etc and clocks the time taken. Running the benchmark on the same hardware would provide a way to compare in an objective way to compare system performance.
@@delta.5 corrected, thanks
I use both ,, mx with kde is ultimate I feel ,, However mint installs nvidia / steam and gaming on linux a little easier imho
Can you review Arco, BIG Linux & MiniOS?
Arco from the perspective that it seems to have largest updated repos & you don't need to rely on Flatpaks.
Actually I think Garuda has the largest repo. ARCOLINUX creator uses it sometimes on his videos. Also BigLinux is a really great KDE distribution.
What do you think of Fedora Linux?
I use asus oled which is best linux disto mx or mint or manjaro
@linuxtex, why not put Linux Mint 21.2 or MX Linux 23 KDE vs. Big Linux (easy to use Arch kde) ? That would be a very interesting comparison video.
I used to use MX Linux as my work driver every good no complaints at all and would use it again. For work driver now I use LMDE 6. I would switch back to MX or just keep both. My personal laptop I am also using LMDE 6. Main computer and servers are all Debian stable.
Having used both, I agree with your review. These Linux distributions are perfect for your spouse. Something very reliable that will allow the user to get work done. The true Linux masochist however prefers something less polished. Perhaps one of the above with just a window manager install? No pain, no gain.
Which video editor do you use to make these videos?
Filmora on Windows 🤣🤣

do you know which Linux operatingsystem would be best for an older pc that has only 1GB RAM ? i have installed Linux Antix on that older pc but Antix uses only like 160MB RAM, with some active apps like 450MB. i would rather have a Linux that has more features and looks nicer and uses like 900MB all together.
Antix linux

I'm not a power user. I just look a you tube, find recipes that I'd like to try, and maybe look at a few other sites. I've used linux mint (17.3-21-2) and a couple of mxlinux distros. Everytime that mx has an update, it screws up me being able to use my printer. I don't have that problem with linux mint.
I always do left side panel unless I'm on a 4:3 screen. But 16:9 or any of the wide screen... always left or right side.
I do it too
I would be nice if the explanation and the video picture are compatible, so you show MX and not Mint when you talk about MX.
In this way you could even display Ubuntu videos talking about Mint or MX.
While connecting mobile phone to Mx linux (4gb ram sony laptop )got slowdown ..,
but 2gb old pc with linux mint going smoothly . Im experienced.
Taskbar on the LEFT is my go-to :-) pleeeezzzz...how do I run my CAD program on Linux? Thanks!! tip: best CAD is ActCAD, but sadly, only for MS-W :-(((
Debian 12 distribution: How to create a Wi-Fi hotspot from the connected Wi-Fi, such as Windows 11
Hi.can we install windows software on Linux mint or mx.or is there a tool that supports windows software for Linux
Which windows software you want in linux??
I run both myself and agree with all you say about them.
Great video. But nobody ever gives the LMDE version of LM it's respect. The Debian base is much preferable to me. I use it on my secondary drive.
Here is my input...... I've been using MX-Linux for probably 3 years now. I tried most of the Ubuntu, etc. flavors when I left Windows behind...then I found MX-Linux. Recently with my laptop setup as it is, w/two 1 TB Seagate 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD's, I've got MX-Linux on 1 HDD, and now I have LMDE on the other HDD.... I simply love MX-Linux and don't want to part with it, but I wanted something else for a new challenge. I tried many like Arch, Fedora, Mangaro, Kali, Zorin, and a few others..... but with my DELL Latitude E6540.... not all of those Distro's could even locate my WiFi card or a Wifi Dongle in the USB port....! They all found my Ethernet card but I don't run Ethernet...... I did not want to waste time installing Drivers for various components.....so I quit the installations and went looking for something else(another Distro). Linux LMDE showed up and out of all the other's I tried....w/out 1 flaw...! And I"m using the LVM fs...... Each 1 TB HDD has the full capacity of each Distro.... I run QGIS on MX-Linux and Mobile Atlas Creator on LMDE-Debian-12..... I make up MAPS for ATAK-CIV a Civilian product of ATAK for non-military Ops.... It struck me a bit funny to see this Video posted as I just started with LMDE about 2 months ago..... I'm beginning to Love it also.... the 2 together make an awesome pair....! =)
should i upgrade my linuxmint version?
I would have chosen Linux mint over MX Linux for the tools and usability aspect due to Linux mints ability to upgrade to newer versions without a complete reinstall of your system. This is my main reason for having previously lean towards rolling release distributions until Linux meant created a tool to upgrade systems without a reinstallation
fedora for me, because it is the middle ground between rolling and point release. Six month point release with easy upgrade without the need to reinstall everything. Mint was my first choice distro and I loved it, but fedora offer newer kernel and package faster and it is important for a few thing that I do on my PC, gaming for example.
I half to agree with you overall, but this wasnt quite in the debate previously mentioned xD Fedora seems to be a lot more performant than mint with window management even using the same DE. I want to like mint so much, but for some reason doesnt pair well with my system. Even upgrading kernels to match fedoras did no justice. @@Winaras79
I'm using LMDE5 and waiting for 6😄
I used the desktop VERTICALLY for a while-- and since the screen is WIDER than it is tall--- it DOES give you more realestate on the screen in visible area-- but it's AWKWARD and hard to get use to..
I have MX KDE on a thumb drive and love it
Linux Mint supports most of the machines.
MX XFCE seems heavy on RAM, I would go for MX KDE,
this should be better than XFCE and Cinammon
MX Linux = feels like Windows XP
Linux Mint = feels like Windows 7
its quite awesome in mint you can press super+1/2/3 etc to quickly launch and go back to the pinned icons on the bottom left just like in modern windows, where that feature is completely missing on all linux distributions
Mint is great for Linux beginners. I'm a more experienced user and I ran it for over a year. I'm currently running MX with KDE Plasma. There's a lot of good stuff, but some things aren't up to date, so I'm trying out both Manjaro and EndeavourOS, both XFCE, in Virtualbox. Really enjoying the AUR, but compiling can take a long time. Still, yay does that. 20 years ago I was using tar a lot, so it's nice to have package managers like apt, pacman/yay, etc.
Manjaro is the worst os I used with stuff breaking every other day. MX is rock solid OS.
How to install MX linux live persistent on USB?
I somehow haven't even heard of MX. Gonna check it out!
You might want to check out also Big Linux (Brazilian arch distribution - KDE)
Linux mint gang 👍
I'm currently running MX linux.
I like the virtual side bar
Works better for reading and normal use in the net
Most of he time I need top down real-estate and have a bit free on the sides
Maybe I'm weird hahaha
Mint and MX are my two favorite distros
I switched from LinuxMint to LMDE because I prefer a Debian backend over Ubuntu. Cinnamon is the most productive DE, only KDE is on par...
for me is Mint (Mate) for desktop PC, and MX (Xfce) for laptops
I also have SPARKY 8 on my machine-- it's like MX but SIMPLER.... PERFECT.
I'm just so comfortable with Linux Mint. It just works!
EXCELLENT!!! Thanx!!
When i first looked at MX i didn't like the screen. Mint was easier on the eyes so i went with that i even bought s load disk on eBay. It was the mate version. Later i loaded cinnamon and that was the last distribution. Years ago i tried Ubuntu but hated all the orange and dark screens.73
Ha! I use neither XFCE, nor Cinnamon. I use Mate, on Mint, because I find it awsome and kind of a even between XFCE and Cinnamon.
You forgot to mention that MX also INCLUDES-- IN THE SOFTWARE--- a COMPLETE MANUAL-- that covers EVERYTHING in MX....EVERYTHING!!!! All INCLUDED IN the distro.. you can read it offline...
As far as performance is concerned, you compared apples to oranges : You compared the speed of Linux Mint Cinnamon vs MX Linux XFCE. You should have done this : Linux Mint XFCE vs MX Linux XFCE. Then you would find that version of Linux Mint (XFCE) is actually faster than MX Linux XFCE.
Thanks, I'm going to give MX a try on my purple HP Stream 11 (edit) well I was going to but the download is ssllooowwww reporting 4 hours (I have AT&T 1GB Fiber download sitting at 930+Mbps
What is the best way to just dual boot both distros?
Separate drives...happier ans sane lives
Same goes for dual booting winturd and Linux
Yo prefiero MX Linux, pues tiene herramientas con las que he podido resolver cualquier problema de manera simple sin usar el terminal. Ademas MX Linux me da mucha libertad, amo esta distro, he probado muchas y hoy me quedo en MXLinux
the touchpad doesnt work on mx or i would install it :/
Can you install mx linux on Macbook 12 inches retina display 2015? Without sound/bluetooth/close lid issue?
No. Unless it's virtual os install within parallels. ARCH LINUX OS WOULD work best and you may need specific T9 drivers installed for it.
@@LiveLife378 So arch linux is probably works best for mac 12 inch retina but with T9 driver? Could you link them please, i’d google but not so much help. Thank you
I installed redcore linux on a 2013 15' macbook pro. It's working fine.
I like both , but I'll choose Mint over MX any day ....
What language is that?
It's so bad that the games I want to play have problems. That is, problems with mmo games and games that contain anti cheat. For now, I'm going back to W10/11, I'll go back to linux when things improve a bit. It's nice that there is proton and wine, but there is often a problem with games that have their own launcher. I wish I could sit down and play on linux like on Microsoft. I know that you only need to configure .... But I don't want to after work in most cases. I want to play. Don't get me wrong I've had these 2 systems and they're great. But Windows temporarily wins for me when it comes to the "sit down and play" option for me. If it improves, I'll gladly switch back to MX linux ❤
Yes Linux mint has been awesome from the start which is where I will go back to with my new laptop
I USE LMDE6-- DEBIAN based just like MX--- and it looks the same as the ubuntu version- just MORE stable.
Mint ofc, its not even open to argue.
Linux Mint XFCE is the best for me. 5 years Mint is my main operating system.
I don't understand this comparison. It would make more sense to compare MX Linux KDE against Linux Mint Cinnamon, and Linux Mint XFCE against MX Linux XFCE.
Sir, I have Asus motherboard and intel i3 8 generation processor...and 4 gb ddr4 crucial ram....so which Linux OS will be suitable for my PC ? Please suggest... I am using windows 11 at present but facing some problems
Thank you 😊
I only use my desktop for light purpose like making CZcams videos or playing songs or watching movies....so which Linux will be best?
I would go Feren OS (KDE) or Mint Cinnamon LTS, and upgrade RAM in future
Considering your amount of RAM, I suppose it would be better to use a lightweight desktop environment, the XFCE. Both MX and Mint are available with XFCE desktop environment, even though the Cinnamon desktop environment offers much features than XFCE. I recommend you to try the Mint first as the learning curve is steep.
@@TheAdrifebrianto ok thanks
I have tried them all and always go back to Mint. Has always been 100% trouble free. Just an old mans opinion.
I have three drives on my pc, one with Mint, one with MX and one with Windows so I guess I am covered.
I trust Mint more.
Mx Linux could not recognize my keyboard layout- I will go for Linux Mint any time.
