Get My Course Linux Mastery Express:
linuxtex.thinkific.com
In this video, we’ll be having a look at the all new Cosmic desktop environment, created by the fan favourite Linux distro Pop!_OS.
Cosmic desktop is a new Linux desktop created for high performance delivery, while being modern and feature rich at the same time. Cosmic desktop is an absolutely new desktop created from scratch, and it’s not based on any other desktop. It’s completely new. And it’s written in RUST, which is an advanced programming language specifically known for its high performance.
While cosmic desktop has a familiar desktop layout, it nonetheless brings many new things and many redesigns to the world of desktop linux. Thanks to RUST, it has a noticeably faster performance compared to other modern desktops we have today.
It also has advanced features like tiling and a nice set of customisation options baked into it. You’ll actually love the tiling feature here if you’re into it.
There’s a lot to get excited for here, so let’s dive right into the all new cosmic desktop.

I put this on my mom's laptop since Microsoft is dropping support for it and I'm impressed by kubuntu. It's the first Linux distro I actually enjoy using. Only problem so far is that it sometimes doesn't boot so you need to shut it down by holding the power button and trying to start it again a few times. But once it's actually running its great.

After you tested it with the live usb Stick, which lets you click around a bit you can either do a dual boot setup (this way you wont lose your win 10) or directly replace win10 completely of course.

7:43 love the full window color changing feature. i feel this is very useful when the regular dark and light themes hurt the eyes due to either too much contrast or too little contrast. sometimes certain monitors don't like the light and dark themes. i mean looking at this video where he places a few dark windows on top of eachother, one cannot distuingish between them easily. they look like a single black block of many rectangles shoved into eachother, if you know what i mean. but any way, the features here are awesome and i will surely give this a try. i wonder if cosmic desktop will appear in other distros as well. maybe something like Cubuntu, Cbuntu, Cosbuntu...

Fractional scaling and multi monitor? Neither of these work. Since KDE can handle multi monitors properly, it has to be a KDE DE for now. Of these 2 major distros, Fedora 40 has plasma 6, Kubuntu 24.04 LTS doesn't. So Fedora KDE wins - easily. When is gnome EVER going to take this seriously? Gnome looks beautiful. But is unusable if you use multi monitors with different scaling.

  • @andrewwigglesworth3030

Wow, the hyperbole here 😀 "Revolutionary new desktop" ... nope, nothing revolutionary here, and it's obvious that the System76 people have no intention of doing anything "revolutionary." This is a mix of pretty well trodden ideas, and as I say, I think this is the intention as they are wanting to develop for a mass market. It was interesting that Canonical couldn't/wouldn't keep on with their replacement for Gnome shell and went back to tweaking the Gnome shell and desktop for their own purposes. How long this desktop environment will last for System76 is a moot point. It hasn't even been launched and used yet. So far all I'm seeing is a remix of ideas, especially from Gnome, but done slightly differently and in some cases it seems not as well. Of course they can create a new desktop environment, use Rust (I thought all the "cool kids" had moved on from that?) and all that. It's in the nature of free software for people to do this, but this whole thing also seems to have at least a smidgen of "not invented here" syndrome.

Because he is based in India and Internet speeds there may be a factor for him to upload larger resolution videos.

You have made every gnome lover utterly and completely disgusted. 😂 you don't understand us at all and so the way you have presented cosmic to us has shown us all the reasons we will cling to gnome. 😂 it is unfortunate because cosmic might be attractive to us if presented in the right way. You have presented it in EXACTLY the wrong way at every single point. Please find a gnome purist and ask them to narrate a video for you. Sorry but you have us cringing at every point. First, turn that goofy blue outline off. Second, hide that goofy dock on fullscreen or get rid of the dock completely. In gnome we do not need a dock. Third, that overview mode looks trash and you were obviously trying to hide it but gnome users LIVE in the overview. That is our workflow. We trash the dock and minimizing apps (utterly useless function) for the cleaner workflow of the overview. Fourth, the little drop down panels everywhere look and dated. Just use xfce at that point. Mostly, our problem with cosmic is going to be the overview looking like trash. Gnome overview is a superhero. I can launch multiple apps in any workspace i want at a single time by just dragging them from the dash to any space. Like picking juicy fruit. You have no idea what you are talking about . It is obvious to all gnome users.
