Yes, you need to get the M26C version, which is made specifically for freewheels.

Any Shimano compatible 6- or 7-speed tigger shifters will work. For instance, our TS39-7 shifters would work well!

can I still use m26c with cassette? it's compatible with freewheel only based on website, I do use 7 speed shimano thread type cogs, my shimano tx800 rd always jumps and can't be indexed properly so I was planning to get myself m26c

Sorry for the late reply! You can, but the guide pulley will be farther from the cassette cogs and shifting performance will be suboptimal.
