"Mr. Jared, can you tell the court what happened?"
"He walked forward and diddled me."
My favorite part about this series is watching Jared repeatedly jumping directly into harm
Whenever Jared's LOZ episodes come to its end it feels like when you were a kid and someone was reading you a story and then says "And that enough for today..." and you're like "AWWWW"
That (along with Saturday morning cartoons) taught me instant gratification is overrated and it's nice to make things last.
Wee little Linky,
runs through the town:
upstab, downstab,
in his nightgown.
"I haven't even gone left yet..." BAD ADVENTURER!!!
My thought too lol
"Oh, Timmy, you're finally back safe and sound, and all thanks to that Link fellow!"
"It was awesome! First he went into a palace and turned into a chicken to get some boots, and then yelled about 'MUNNY' when he found a bag with a P on it, and I think there was something about some guy named Ganon returning!"
And that's how Timmy was never let outside again.
You should turn that into a "MrBallen - story"...
That poor child, just being dragged along in a super dangerous dungeon with lank, watching him get murdered
That child becomes a cold blooded murderer due to the blood, guts and gore he saw.
Seeing the joy on Jerd's face from its a secret to everybody was amazing
Honestly, this series is just a treat. They've added so much to the game to make it feel fresh and new. This is the kind of treatment I wish more old games would get - faithful, but still keeping it interesting for returning players.
Am I the only one yelling at the screen telling him he didn’t have to go into “chicken mode” in the palace to get the boots?!?!
Definitely not. Sometimes our Jerd is a foob.
no, you're not.
I shook my head with a smile on my face.
never change, jerd. never change.
AH! I thought only I would loose my mind on that! My poor neighbours though... They might think I have lost my mind allready; not just for yelling eventhough I live on my own, but hence I do live in germany, for some reason IF I yell at my screen while watching a Jerd-vod - I do this in english... 🤯🥳
I'm lost, what DID he have to do?
@@Evertide05 Literally walk to the right. It didn't matter if he was on the "ceiling"
I love the fish-bridge to the labyrinth island. And because the fish respawn after a few seconds, you can grind there, slowly, 75 xp at a time, but you can.
I will forever stan the bubble farming method in the first palace. A good hour or so and you can faceroll the majority of the game to come.
@@amyjo715 I'm with you. You can easily hit level 5 sword in the first palace in under an hour. Wouldn't make for a fun stream though!!
22:14 Famous last words. 🤣
The secret to everybody is a real cool callback
I know the save lady joke was made in a previous episode, but what if she says “Amazing I’ll never forget that” because she’s listening to your story?
Yeah, that’s what I figured too- you’re telling the story of your adventure so it can be written down.
What if she's saying that because of Link's impressive up stab? I mean, it's pretty nice.
double entendres are funny like that
@@MrBlight Nah, Jared doesn't know it yet. All he's got is a down stab. It's still pretty nice.
Since Link doesn’t talk do you think it’s just a series of him miming his adventures?
I love zelda 2. Im 41 now and i feel like a happy little kid watching you play this new version...and also recognizing areas that would have pissed me off as a kid 😂
It would be awesome if Nintendo put this much into the older games or even just as extra content for the new generation
They really knocked it out of the park with this remake
Not a spoiler but if you enter a town from the north or west of the world map you will start on the west side of the town. If you enter from the east or south, you’ll start on the east side of town. An exception is Saria and New Kasuto since they have specific areas on one end of the town that you cannot start from.
11:11 Nice move!
Anybody else get super frustrated that he did not need to chicken to get over to the boots he just needed to walk to the right?!?
Yes. I was face-palming. And then he would've had plenty of magic to cast Heal during the blue iron knuckle fight and not game over. Just like in the original, it doesn't matter whether you enter a room from the ground level or above the ceiling of the same room - you end up in the same place.
And that he didn’t even need to die to the blue knuckle… he is terrible at fighting them, my 12 year old on his first playthrough gets hit less 😂
@@joshuaseu Well, that's not fair, being 12 years old is a totally unironic boon to adapting to new games. Maybe if they were in the single digit ages it'd be a legit burn to make the comparison, but the tweens are like the ideal sweet spot where your motor controls and cognitive abilities have progressed enough to handle challenging gameplay without life yet totally beating you down from having the drive to learn new skills. Jerd is old enough to be way too stubborn to want to do better.
The low ceiling for that blue knuckle fight was clearly intended to force to you to fight it the standard way, while Jerd is married to the quick kill method that really prefers more headroom to pull off and too set in his ways to switch it up for one fight.
@@Rocky2418not entirely true. this version has some screen exits where it matters if you take the upper or lower one.
@@joshuaseunot gonna lie, I still, to this day, struggle with blue iron knuckles. I don't know why, but I do.
11:39 No Jared! Don't be a...well, Lank is a hero. Don't be an underpowered hero!
And here I thought the Canon spelling of the hero was "Link" but whos counting>>>! HA HA HA.
@@chaos7soul819 Yes, but in some of his LoZ playthroughs, like the randomizers that I've seen, Jared named the save file "Lank".
@@tljscrewjob6397 So, I see now.... Ok all is well I guess, I simply forgot he did that I guess!? Thanks, for the info though.
7:55 So this, as far as I know, is the best grinding spot in the game. Going from one side to the other gives you 75 EXP in 7 seconds, with the fishes respawning after circa 3 seconds. That's about 450 consistant EXP per minute.
3:10 perfectly normal streamer fight with inner Gollum/Chat
Lank amuses me. Finds a lost child, stuffs them into his bag like any other item. Meets a knight, "Wait, your telling me I can point my sword up? Dude your blowing my mind. UP!" What a strange guy he is.
My GF (and I as well) is so obsessed with your videos, she even takes over some of your common phrases.
"Never not had it!" seems to be her new favorite, whenever we struggled through a level on Risk Of Rain Returns 😂❤
I assume like Jared, she also always succeeds on her first try.
Jared thinking he needed to chicken to get to the boots was... painful. Hilarious, but also painful XD
Why is that ceiling section even up there is my question
I like that the secrets just keep coming. Hoverbat didn't just add stuff to the start of the game and then let it play out.
"Damage hurts" - Projared, 2024
Can we get that on a shirt?
Amazing! I'll never forget that
Child rescued -> "reflect" spell acquired ✅ up thrust technique acquired ✅
Used "heal" spell correctly after looting a (red) magic jar 9:36
You forgot the mistake you made in the 2nd temple... look for keys in the beginning. (X) 15:00 - 21:23 there is 3x keys in this area of the temple.(2/3) left one is still there.
Magic (white) 7 bars ✅
volcano quest (6th s)
Things to remember from 1st game:
1> using "fire" spell to help thin out hordes of foes 6:55
Jared fights well, but doesn't run/jump well.
You accomplished much in this video, grats.😊
24:16 Look at your games the way Jared looks at this one!
This continues to be a wonderful series! A fun little jaunt through my childhood, with enough new stuff that it feels fresh, but also doesn't feel like a different game, altogether, because the sprites, and most mechanics, are the same. Thanks!
Been watching every episode and I have to say this really makes me wish this game was released exactly what this way. This is such a good mod😊
I feel like this is how Miyamoto would have liked it to be if they’d have had the time and the NES had the ability.
@@GamerFromJumpYeah I don't think this would even be possible at the time
There's something adorable about Jared calling experience points, "money".
Leeeet's play experience making game!
7:57 - Scrooge McDuck and Shovel Knight can _both_ eat their heart out!
All the little Blob puzzles are pretty neat.
Recalling how casually you greeted Anju, it's funny that now she plays a more important role. This mod keeps delivering, keep 'em coming! 👍🏼
I'm loving this playthru.
Holy Jeebus Jared and I are different gamers. Jared's on like 1858/2500 exp and 1 life at the time I'm writing this comment, and just going full blast in the dungeon looking for those boots. I've been playing this remake too (inspired after seeing PJ doing it), and when I've been in similar situations you can bet your ass I'm figuring out how to safely grind that remaining ~700 exp before the inevitable death comes. (I am aware that grinding at all for a streamer wouldn't be too interesting, which is one reason why he wouldn't do it)
I had one very frustrating game over. I was fighting those guys that constantly throw maces in an arc, close to a level up on my last life. I had the timing correct to get past the maces, but this monster was hovering around a locked door and the door opening animation froze me in place long enough for him to walk forward and kill me by touch damage.
I'll take the blame for not platforming or timing attacks correctly, but that sort of thing is infuriating.
Beyond things like that, I just roll with the punches. If I lose experience then I just move on.
Jared, you need to check the e-mails in your comp- oh wait, wrong series.
I had first assumed the dev just tried to make engine as similar to the original game as they could, but turns out they literally ported the original source code to GameMaker. No wonder it looks 100% authentic.
feels like it aswell
that should be on shirt "Damage Hurts" lol
The slime puzzles, and the original content in general, is just so damn good. Seriously making me just shake my head and grin every episode. I don't ever want this to end!
7:53 Jerd understood the assignment.
Thumbs up for talking to a nonexistend chat! XD
This reimagining has completely changed my mind about this game haha
i dont think i'll ever play the normal version again
not that i was gonna
Zelda II has an unfairly bad reputation >:c
@@Tailstraw_xD Zelda II is a good game, but it is extremely punishing. I don't think its reputation is unfair at all, it earned its reputation fair and square. This remake made it a playable game for most of the people and not just the hardcore fanbase imo.
@@sgtcoffman the _reputation_ is deserved, but the _legacy_ isn't. It's still a fine game for its day, and people overblow it saying it was this ET-tier garbage fire, when it absowasn't. it's just really hard to enjoy _now._
@@KairuHakubi The one good saving grace of the original Zelda 2 is the randomizer, which not only randomizes the entire world map, but the color & layout of the palaces too.
32:44 There's a jumping mini game too?!
Dont know if this has been but I keep hearing BrentalFloss in my head.
Okay, so Jared is missing a big feature in this remake, and that's that you can press the "O" key to bring up the Options menu and change the soundtrack to IsabelleChiming's remix ost! Please like this so that he'll see this in the near future; I'm four dungeons in and I just found out about this, and and the Swamp Palace theme slaps so hard, and I wish I knew about the options menu before I did that dungeon!
Just realized he already has all the videos recorded, the rest are just private ATM, so if he didn't find out about the alt soundtracks, we'll have to wait for him to play the randomizer.
@@KayFiOSor New Game+ for the true ending.
@@Nicholas_Steel I just finished that the other day. I'm not going to say much about it because spoilers, but I really liked the post game content! ☺️
No Falling in Love applies to games too
"Damage hurts." - Projared 2024
I hate you so much for getting the jumping game on the first try. I was probably there for about 15 minutes. First 5 was figuring out the physics, and I was so proud of myself, too.

Just wait for the emotional damage, that hurts SO much worse.
I'm really enjoying this series.
The lizard guys in Zelda 2 are called Geru -- Lizalfos weren't a thing until Ocarina of Time.
(And the not-Wizzrobes are just called something like "Wizzar," if I'm remembering right.)
Cool games like this one or FFR scream for a new mini series on the main channel, something like "old but new" just talking about how cool they are and what they change to the original. Just to get more word out there for these super cool fan projects.
There is a main channel?
no, don't put too many eyes on them, especially not nintendo games. they'll ruin the fun real quick.
@@Retro_Rainer It depends, these games are completely remade in a new engine and everything including new custom sprites. Might not be a problem and it's not like they give a crap about Zelda 2. And with how fast they usually are i guess they are aware of this already.
With how many times I've failed the bouncing downstab game never making it past the 3rd thingy; seeing you do it in one shot like it's nothing is both satisfying in a cathartic sense, and highly infuriating
"Damage hurts"
Words of wisdom
More fun stuff and comedy here than a barrel full of Mon"Keys" and I know that they have the LOCKS somewhere.... HA HA!
Yeah, those not-Wizzrobes encountered in the fourth Palace are just simply called "Wizards".
It's what always made them stick out to me (that, and their very awkwardly-coloured capirotes).
"He marched forward and diddled me" - Jared 2024, the sussiest phrase ever.
17:19-18:04 How many other people were screaming at Jared, that he didn't need to land on top?
The struggle between exploring for TREY-SHUR and making progress is so real.
I'm really surprised Jared doesn't play with the chicken mode more lol. I fought most of the temple bosses and even the final boss in chicken mode after I got that spell. 😆
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
You can get an upgrade for the chicken that allows you to stay in the form permanently, as well as get sword beams and up and down stab.
It's hidden extremely obnoxiously and I never would have found it if someone didn't post it in a comment of a long play.
It's hidden......
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
To the left of the river devil. In the forest there's one tile that has a fairy on the left corner side. When you leave the spot you'll be facing downward, which is the only way to hit that particular tile beneath you. Hammer here and it'll reveal a house tile which has the wise man who screwed it up before.
I don't think you can win against Carock in chicken form since you need your shield & the Reflect spell to bounce his own magic against him. But it's useful against Gooma, since you can crouch as a chicken which puts you under his ball & chain and as a chicken, you actually attack faster with less delay, allowing you to attack more rapidly than as regular Link.
@@Animebryan2 I assumed the same thing and didn't even try it with big wiz lol. Or the first of the final dungeon bosses that you have to use thunder on.
22:12 was glorious, peak ProJared hubris
By god, Jared is a beast at this game! Not only did he figure out the slime puzzle in Darunia faster than I did, but he did the damn sword pogo minigame in one try?! Those took me like an hour each to master! How are you so good?!
He's a pro!
Guess it makes sense. It is in his name, after all.
There's a secret easy way to do the Sword Pogo mini game, but Jared has yet to find the secret. It does make the Sword Pogo MUCH easier.
What is the secret?@@AkaiAzul
@@giacatnguyen9635 The upgraded Fairy Spell (transformed into the Cucco spell). When used, Cucco Link can up and down-stab, it has slow fall, making positioning much easier.
I was about to yell “no, get the boots first” but he read my mind
Obviously no Spoilers but when second quest inevitably happens I'd highly recommend going into the options and swapping the music to IsabelleChiming for an excellent remix of all the tracks, and then some~ it is something I'd give money to have, in fact I did!
Spoilers, I guess?
------
I just wish the second quest had a little more done to it besides the second quest exclusive part of the map. Some of the side rooms have less candles, some of the boss rooms are a little more dangerous, and you can't get the downstab without the glove, but it's less of a second quest like Zelda 1 and just a new game+ for the first 95% of it.
------
ACTUAL spoilers now.
-----------------------
The final boss of the second quest was the only letdown of this new version. Getting the mask that lets you fit into a monster village and getting an exclusive spell was AWESOME! What came after... not so much. I get that Ganon's resurrection was flawed like in the Oracle games because you used Dark Link's blood, but at least in the Oracle games you still FOUGHT Ganon. Getting a resurrection spell and acting like I'm going to fight Ganon and then fighting a huge pillar instead isn't exactly getting me hyped, and then the TRUE FINAL BOSS is... a shadowy giant slime........ whooo... Not the worst final boss, but it just didn't hit me.
3:50 i noticed the fire spell lights torches. Could be a good work around for not having a candle of that was the case
Except you'd already have the candle by that point
@@kagari1426 there was a built in randomizer mode, remember?
@@shanebhoy1888 Correct! Depending on how unlucky you get for the candle you either have to go in enemy blind, or rely on either your fire spell or the few enemies that shoot it.
I'm on my first randomizer, and I got the candle around the mid game, though I think fire was my second or third spell.
It's been really fun. I turned all the settings on as much as possible besides keysanity. After beating the first and second quest I wasn't too eager to make the third game last crazy long.
Nintendo should officially license this, but keep it free. AM2R, too.
They won't. Nintendo is full of Japanese Boomers who can't stand it when fans one-up them at developing games for their own franchise. If only they could look at Capcom or Sega's POV on fangames, they would be a lot more respectable.
"It's a secret to everyone...locally grown...butter lettuce..."
I just got past palace 6 (for the first time ever, thanks guy who made this) and it's still hard as balls after that. Book of mudora unlocks some coooool stuff. Also, anybody else think mudora was a mistranslation of majora?
Mudora is a commonly used name in Zelda lore.
I don't think it's a mistranslation. the book of mudora first appeared in a link to the past. so way earlier than majora was even thought of.
You think so? Guess I have to ask where your levels are at, because with maxed out levels and the bonus items Hoverbat added the difficulty tanked to the point I didn't lose a single life in the final palace and that was usually the only place I really struggled.
@@kyuubinaruto17 I finished it last night and I managed the great palace with only one death. I had a harder time getting there past the world map encounters.
I love chickens Eddy!
This is my current favorite series on all of YT. I need to download and play this myself.
I never thought I’d have so much fun watching Zelda II. The remake makes it still very challenging, but more fair and just more to do. I must have played someone else’s save when I was a kid though because I don’t recognize 75% of the game; even parts that are same as the original, yet I remember fighting dark Link.
I couldn't have been the only one saying you don't need the damn chicken....

Watching Jared loop the dropdown like 4 times on his last life, losing magic and life each pass, only to die with 1-2 hits left... I was upset XD Why was he so insistent on not just walking forward?
I’m so mad you did the jumping mini game on the first try.
Took me like 20 tries.
I think I got it on my second try. First time I was just trying to figure out what exactly I was doing.
I think you HAVE to do this to pass, so this may be a dumb question, but did you hold the jump button as you pogo'd to gain height?
Beyond that It comes down to understanding how Link's momentum works.
In order to clear the game, you have got to play the second quest. It shall be really different with some new aspect s.
32:36 You made the downstab pogo thing look way too easy. Ive been struggling for an hour on this part. I LOVE this remake but i miss the old fairy spell and wish i could just fly up there.
Actually just completed it! Trick for me was to let go of the direction or even upstab a bit if needed while you adjust yourself for the next one. Hope all can complete this.
Damage hurts and people die when they're killed
Link is now an upstabbing citizen.
Chimkin Magic FTW!
This is tons of fun to watch.
Hey Jerd! Just wanted to let you know that you can figure out the boulder code by process of elimination with only 5 numbers. You REALLY want what is in there! You can also reset the boulders by entering an encounter and then just leaving that encounter. I promise you that it is very much worth it! Also... Don't forget the slime/bot that is lurking around in the maze.
How do you figure it out with only 5 numbers?
@@Animebryan2 With 5 of the 8 directions known the number of permutations to test is very low.
17:55 Keep holding right.
It surprises me how he doesn't seem to have a clue about the screen mechanics. Especially when the game spells it out for him. He enters through the top twice and comes out of the bottom twice on the way back, yet still has no clue that he could've just gone along the bottom to the right.
