      Haven't seen it yet but I commented in another video how the "friend zone" is a myth. It's a concept conjured up by people(mostly men) who don't have the guts to shoot their shot and instead try to show the woman how "nice" he is. When this somehow works they will complain "it's like having a girlfriend without the benefits" to which I respond, "you mean having a friend? Which is what she is treating you like because that's how she views you?"
      At the end of the day the people that pull this crap are outright predatory. They are using the premise of friendship to get into a person's pants rather than genuinely offer friendship without any quid pro quo. But then these are the same people who will disparage their object of "affection" when those feelings are not returned or perceived to not be how they want.
      It's an incredibly toxic trait and I will likely edit as a response to this after having seen it. Still on the first story and WOW...

I do believe he did actually care about her and had insecurities that he didn't know how to deal with other than emulating his dad. He grew up with a dad who actively taught him that emotionally and verbally abusing your partner is a good thing and saw women as an object to own. Having that as his normal growing up it's no wonder his father's insecurities and abusive habits bled into him even though he didn't fully understand what he was doing.
      Obviously this isn't an excuse, the boyfriend is responsible for his actions and breaking up was the right thing to do. However I don't think he was evil and malicious like your ex was , I think there is hope for him in future relationships if he seeks therapy and unpacks what his dad taught him.

Itd be a reminder as much as a heads up. I think this story treats the friends as NPCs and personally think its more likely there's stuff OP didn't say or just made it up. I was extremely ill for eight years. My husband was by my side every moment. He was extremely worried. He took all the responsibilities for taking care of our children and home. He never complained and only tried to support me and be my biggest cheerleader. I know I would have died if my husband went and had an affair at the hardest time of my life. Our love only grew for each other. Our trust got even stronger. My husband is selfless. It is unbelievable that there are men that put sex before respect, honor, and love.

    Family Tradition Story: I'd be more in favor of the boyfriend's family if they tailored the tests to the spouses - like maybe the first two did cooking and housekeeping tasks because they were stay at home wives. But maybe for OP they'd test her on some housekeeping, balancing a check book, and maybe like her taste in wine bars (where the women of the family will go and hang out with her). But if this is set up so that OP will be the first spouse to fail - yeesh. I wouldn't let my family "test" my spouse unless it was a friendly joke and my spouse really wanted to do it.

    As a polyamorous person-NO. These misconceptions are so problematic. Open relationships do not work if a couple is on the rocks; it requires a super stable relationship with open communication. It’s not a band-aid to slap down and call it a day. And if no conversation has happened between all parties, it’s not an open relationship-it’s cheating.

    • @grankmisguided
      @grankmisguided Před rokem +290

      Hundred percent, but I think it was only mentioned as a way to try to broach the subject of them both having cheated, not as a way to be that is at all healthy or okay. Ethical non-monogamy is not a fix for extramonogamous affairs; the trust has already been violated, you definitely can't now shift to a relationship style that requires *more* trust and communication! It's the other way around: consider bringing up non-monogamy when you first feel that way, so that you *don't* end up violating your partners' trust when you get over your head later 😑

    • @zizou00_
      @zizou00_ Před rokem +96

      Yeah, a relationship is an agreement between all parties about what's going on in it. It requires open communication, and it requires every person involved being explicitly aware of all aspects of that relationship. Monogamy is an agreement between two people. Bringing anyone else in without both being aware and consenting before that new person is even approached is cheating. Being in a monogamous relationship, then cheating, then trying to manufacture some poly scenario isn't a healthy way to approach it, even if both parties are cheating. Dude was so scummy being comfortable in his 6 year affair (which he managed to paint himself as the victim of in his explanation, yikes, bringing up his daughters when his decision to cheat (and continue to cheat) was his own choice), but the second his wife does it he acts all emotionally damaged and carpet-barfy. Dude's a selfish monster.
      Chanse was trying to be open minded, but missed the mark on that one. It happens. The guy was clearly okay with cheating on his wife for a protracted period of time. He was not looking for a poly relationship, he was looking to cheat on his wife. Doesn't matter how much he says he loves her. He doesn't respect her enough to be honest about cheating on her. That's not someone who would communicate well enough to maintain an open relationship. It's someone who is only thinking about their own gratification.

    That “test” is SO incredibly insulting. I would’ve walked out as soon as I realized it wasn’t a joke.

    That first story reminded me of a story I read in a book about toxic parents. It is so eerily similar to the girl who developed this cleaning ritual because her father always told her she was dirty. Turns out it was the father projecting because he had impure thoughts about his own daughter and she didn't find out until she was an adult.
    That story stuck with me because of how absolutely vile it was.

      I did feel kind of bad for the boyfriend in that first story. He really just didn't seem like he knew any better? It's so sad how much that kind of stuff gets passed down to kids who feel like the only thing they can do is trust their parents. His dad was insecure and passed that down to his kid.

      @@EmilytheBaleester yeah, it is so tragic. And having to unpack a lot of childhood trauma as an adult is hard if you don't know where to start. Hopefully this started him on his journey to re-evalute what he was taught as a child.

    As a fellow psychology degree holder, I feel like I would love to see a podcast that’s Shane sitting down with different people and just being real. I love to have those kinds of conversations where we walk away feeling more human. Maybe I just miss smoshcast

      @@JSargeK people w psych degrees typically end up being someone with a drive to understand and empathize with everyone and move through life with more patience but also healthier boundaries. I also really enjoyed Courtney on the podcast, that was probably my favorite thing she’s been involved in because she has an interesting story to tell but she’s got her vlogs now what kind of scratch that itch

      Empathizing with other means you should be a childfree person. And if you aren't, then you aren't any better or more understanding than anyone else. And your thoughts are just as basic as others.
