Freddy was a huge fan of Montserrat Caballe (a native of Spain) and vise versa. She was one of THE voices of the 20th century. An operatic legend with a career that spanned 4 decades. In fact the Italian opera fans dubbed her "La Superba" (the superb one). This duet was very special to both of them. This was originally planned for the 1992 Summer Olympic games in Barcelona, but Freddy passed away before that happened.
Dont forget Freddie has a reach fot 4 octaaf with his voice, really a true professional singer!!
They did a whole album of duets. Stunning in every way.

It was not after he died. I was composed for it, and he appeared at the opening.

The people in charge of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games approached Montserrat Caballe to participate in the Opening Musical Number because she was born in Barcelona and was arguably their biggest Star. By chance she had met Freddie not so long before that thus she mentioned it to Freddie and together they started to improvise and write a song to see if it could work as a song for the Opening Ceremony. The final result is this song, Barcelona that became not only the official hymn for the 1992 Olympic Games but an hymn for the city of Barcelona. Unfortunately Freddie died in 1991 so they decided to look for another performer to sing in the Ceremony and selected Andrew Lloyd Weber to compose the new music. He wrote the song Amigos para siempre and Sarah Brightman and José Carreras performed that song. However the Song Barcelona has already became the hymn for Barcelona since it was presented in 1987 and by popular demand they still included it on the Ceremony and people still considers this song Barcelona as the official song for the 1992 Olympic Games.
Freddy actually said that she had the most amazing voice he'd ever heard. It was his dream come true doing a duet with her.
The whole Barcelona album is a masterpiece. I think it ´s the Freddie ´s finest work. Montsy wanted to sing with Freddie, they were very good friends and loved each other💕

When you hear someone like La Superba (The Superb One, as Montserrat Caballe was nicknamed) you understand why fully, formally trained classical music singers stand at a different level from the rest of us. Freddies voice is classically trained and he had an idea that opera and rock could merge into a fabulous combination. The beautiful lady is a world class top soprano in the opera world. Sadly, she has since passed away to join Freddie in musical heaven.
Freddie was pure genius and magic. He wrote and arranged this musical performance that brought two genres of musical style to life. ❤️

Upsets me just thinking about him having to tell her that
They recorded in feb or march I think 87 he was diagnosed with aids in April
He told her he was positive,she was upset he wouldn't let her kiss him she thought he was upset with her he had stopped her drinking from her glass as well
You can tell the love and respect they have
Kissing her hand seems like nothing but it shows great friendship
He had stopped her because people beleived they could get aids by sharing drinks...
He didn't tell the band until innuendo when he was really I'll but didn't explain it was aids
He didn't even tell his sister she said he only told her he was terminally I'll august 90 after she asked about his foot but he didn't say what it was
