“My arm is getting tired from all these stones I keep throwing from my glass house.”
God your channel is magnificent.
Now that's good criticism!
(..if I understood you correctly 😅)
i didnt understand that line actually. can someone explain it to me please?
Luna Arli You know the phase, "glass cannon,"? It's like that.
Luna Arli That line is a play on the phrase "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." It means that you shouldn't be a hypocrite. For example, you shouldn't make fun of or attack someone for not wearing sunblock in the summertime if you yourself do not wear sunblock in the summertime. JP made that reference because in this video he talks about how you shouldn't be overly mean or nitpick when giving criticism, yet his sarcastic videos can be seen as mean or nitpicky (even though that is the point of his videos).
It is unrelated to the phrase "glass cannon" which means that something is very powerful but can break easily. It's most often used in gaming, where something or someone has very high offensive strength, but is very weak defensively.
Lawrence Gist It really isn't.
And remember, the more obscenities the better, it helps add a layer of urgency, meaning the author will feel and connect with the critique the better!
Ares 90 All the obscenities!!! WE NEED THE HYPERBOLE OF WORST BOOK EVER, THEREFORE WE MUST USE ALLLLLLLLLL THE OBSCENITIES! Why even stop at one language? This is the Internet, Google Translate will perfectly serve to offend the author!
the best critisim is "ur mum gae no givebacks and ur a bich ! 121REEEEE"
Link's AMV. Ya I love it, 500+ hours logged
Be sure to send threats of torture and murder to the author and or their loved ones, that's rational and totally not disturbing at all!
Obscenities do show sincerity. So you can tell that this entire comment is insincere by the lack of obscenities.

This is literally Twitter in a nutshell
We must defeat these evil metabolists
Don't forget: If somebody gives a reasonable critique of something you like, praising its good points while also pointing out the areas in which it needs improvement, they're obviously a hater since they didn't just celebrate every single thing about it, and you should engage in a flame war with them until the sun burns out.
Yeah! Sweaty slapfight's right- they wrote, "you're character's a sue." They used the wrong "your", therefore the character can't _possibly_ be a Mary Sue!
And according to obsessed fanboys and fangirls fans who are willing to criticise certain aspects of series they like aren't "true fans" even though there's no such thing. Fanboy and fangirl logic is "just blindly praise the series you like, pretend there's nothing wrong with it and that nothing has to be done better, delude yourself that to be a fan of a series you have to like every part of it even the bad ones." Legitimate critiques are evil plots to ruin the series in their minds.
Just tacking on a note, now that an old comment in this chain got deleted and my reply has no context anymore-
I don't remember the exact post, but I think somebody with the screename "Sweaty slapfight" said something about responding to the "haters" by complaining about their grammar, rather than trying to understand which "areas needing improvement" they're talking about. Because as we all know, one little typo or confusion over homophones completely invalidates anything you're trying to say!
I know I could've edited the 3-year-old comment, _I just didn't want to._

That rant about coffee shops went on way too long because coffee shops are stupid and I hate them.
I've always been a tea shop person myself
Death to Starbucks!!!
You forgot that because you personally dislike coffee shops it means that the story is universally crap
All I could think of was SAO which got SO much shit for all its coffee shop/café scenes even though the constant repeat of those is really one of the smaller issues..xD
Actually, I am quite fond of coffee shop scenes. Like in The Room. Anyway, how's your sex life?
Authors think Praise=Criticism
Random people on the internet think Hate=Criticism
SylenDraws This is the third video in a row I’ve seen you in the comments section.
Colm _ Ikr, he watches all good videos

So...pretty much everything is criticism...
I had it more as when you ask somebody for criticism but they only want to say nice things because they're too afraid to hurt your feelings, or somebody likes your work so much they refuse to see flaws (of which every body of work has) rather than that praise is not criticism (because it can be). Criticism can be positive and negative - the key is for it to be constructive. So you can praise an author for something that works really well, as long as you can explain why it works so well. What this comes down to is empty hate/praise is not criticism. You can really dislike an element in a story, and explaining why is constructive crticism.
This video should be mandatory seen by anyone who should be allowed to do something on the internet.
Knowing the internet, half of them will somehow miss the sarcasm.
Only half? How optimistic.

Love triangles are totally a running gag now, JP. I'm sorry. You are now forever saddled with the terrible burden of referencing them. XD
Well to be honest he started to make it a running gag, if you watch his early videos he place a love triangle in every video
Not sure if stating the obvious or haven't seen a lot of his older videos...
It could be worse. At least his fans aren't obsessed with throwing pommels at people.

“I think this critic is really bad. They seem to be writing for the sake of how wittily they can destroy a work, rather than trying to provide helpful critique to the author. Not really worth listening to.”
“Coward. You just can’t handle criticism.”
I have seen this very thing said before and it groan inducing. You are so right.
Destroy... ehh.. Critism should test to destruction. no point in buttered up criticism. If it is built solidly, it will stand against the harshest criticism.
@@carbon1255 doesn't work that way in reality, especially for long formats like books. there'll eventually be a controversial topic where the critic can obliterate you without any purely logical comeback
Philippine politics in a nutshell
January Galura lmao true
Do a love tesseract! It's like a love triangle but with 16 characters! That not only makes it unimaginably convoluted for readers, but critics can't accurately attack it without knowing everything about your story! Plus it references high level mathematics so you can stand atop your knowledge and laugh at the rest of the population for not being able to comprehend your genius!
Even better, no one can accuse your story of being flat or two-dimensional when it's modeled after a four-dimensional cube! Complected=Deep, right?
YOU MANIAC! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! Were you not content with the love dodecahedron?!? Why would you unleash such infamy upon the internets? Sweet tropes of TV have mercy on us.
Wait, are you the guy with hypothetical stars?
“Tesseract”
Loki: *heavy breathing*
You fools! The only way to solve a love triangle is to unite every single characters together in a Love Sphere.
Only then will we attend perfect harmony.
I have a piece of advice for anyone attending a writing workshop: You don't even have to read the stories written by your fellow classmates! All you have to do is listen to what everyone else says in their critiques and piggyback off of them, saying "I agree with what they said," while tossing in a bunch of other vague criticisms like ""x' is cliche" and "you need more character development." It's easy!
*that easy
Can't say I haven't had to bluff my way through a workshop like that (mainly because I kept forgetting that some people might forget to print copies and I'd have to check online). Though I always did try to be sure to take a copy home and write down a critique after.
Is this video suppose to be satire or sarcastic? I never really knew the difference
Satire is a humorous yet arguably constructive way to show someone their mistakes (or mistakes that they could make,) whereas sarcasm is used to insult people and hurt their feelings. They both try to be funny and clever. Satire is usually aimed at a large audience, and sarcasm used most often in one-to-one conversations.
Mostly sarcasm. Satire is using mockery and exaggeration to point out the flaws in something, while sarcasm is something said or done in a way that strongly implies another, usually opposite way.
"Don't bother to explain *why* it's bad!" This is my favorite part of the whole video. I think this is perfect terrible writing advice, sums up the majority of bad feedback.
Everybody's a critic.
Which is perfectly fine, as long as they keep a relative level head about it.
Are you *fucking* stupid?
No,true critics are supposed to be using fucking vulgar language and logical fallacies such as ad hominem

I have yet to read anything by de Sade, but from what I've read ABOUT his work, it's pretty much exactly what happens when you throw an overprivileged twat in prison: unrealistic characters, implausible plotlines, and a lot of 'Life sucks!' Despite what people want to believe, he was never cleverly poking society and showing up its hypocrisy.

Don't forget about commas! There is no good review without rambling about every single place the author misplaced a comma!
What, do you, mean, misplaced, commas,? Commas, indicate pauses, and obviously, we should all, like, use commas, to, represent when our, brain pauses, while typing.
Excuse me but, sometimes a, misplaced comma is , simply, indicating that the speaker, is, William Shatner.
And the review does this while not using a single comma anywhere. Along with proper grammar and spelling -- and punctuation in general.
Shatner was trying to convey that Kirk was thinking and speaking off the top of his head. If you've seen his other work, you know he doesn't do that as a matter of course.

I got a client I'm helping right now with his book. Poor guy actually was expecting me to rip it to shreds, probably due to a number troll reviewers he'd had to put up with. As that paralleled my own experience with a script I'm writing with a partner, I took the time to point out strengths and weaknesses.
Memo to anyone who thinks they know better than the published: should you ever get past your fear to write your own script, don't be surprised to find out how hard it is to get things straight.
oh boy do I know, I wrote a novelesque fan story cause the developer of an indie game was quite enthusiastic on the idea and let me tell you it was my first one, wrote the first chapter in an essay format, ooh boy that was a mess, but I learned and now I am not as terrible, maybe I really don't know and by the way my stories do not have run on sentences like in the comment here i am just lazy when it comes to commeting
I remember writing a handful of scripts for my drama class when I was in highschool, boy were those first few drafts messy.
PalmerDude Gaming Hey, it's a CZcams forum, pal, not a final draft. Trust me when I say practice actually does make perfect. Keep it up and you might be surprised what you come up with.
I have already surprised myself with just how complex I can actually make a story but with subtlety, for example of the course of two stories I slowly built up this corporation that was in the background for the most part and soon it will be taking the forefront, whenever I make my third story, I still think I am not amazing though, I know you can be your own worst critic but I tell myself purposely that its not perfect because it helps me with realizing what does not work
PalmerDude Gaming If you can see the improvement, then never fret about it being perfect. At the same time, see if there are ways you can improve as you go. Perfection is a journey, not a destination. Sounds like you're already on the right track.
My criticism pet peeves:
- Treating all flaws as equally serious, especially when commenting on a noob's work. Someone's first work will be full of flaws and they'll likely delete it later in embarrassment. But they can't focus on all of them at once, so a rant that puts equal stress on things that can be fixed at their current skill level, things they should practice towards in the near future, and things that really won't come without more experience, doesn't tell them anything useful at all.
- Thinking you can always pinpoint where something went wrong. Like there's a hundred steps between an idea and a final work, but you can ALWAYS tell which one the artist doesn't master and how strange, it's always either something that can't be fixed so they should quit, or something revealing a shameful hidden aspect of their personality so they should quit.
- Posting your hilariously hyperlative critic to a cringe media forum. Nothing more constructive than submitting some 12 years old's Pokemon fanfic to worstfictionever dot net and have a hundred edgelords flooding their comments for a couple of weeks.

What's also aggravating is when hateful trolls try to play the victim. They'll send the most hateful insults and threats to someone on social media, and then when they get blocked, they'll cry that they got blocked just because they offered a little "criticism". 🙄😤. Edit- Kudos for pointing out how ridiculous the idea that someone will give up what they're doing because someone criticized them is. I wonder about those people who think insulting and threatening others will make them bow down to them. They probably had bad parents who defended everything they did, so now they get they'll get whatever they want just by throwing a tantrum.
Don't forget to be critical with really young writers to get some really juicy insult potential and to crush out the ambition and motivation of future creators.
3/10. That is the rule. You must compliment/hold criticism from a childs work 3 times in 10 even if it means complimenting shit else they will stop.
Bit of pop psych for you there. Less than you thought, perhaps. It is also true giving praise more than about half of the time is also really bad for them.

"Giving criticism is not a skill" I am glad this channel is pretty much entirely sarcastic, otherwise I would be very angry. As someone who criticizes stories and writing a lot, I know how best to do things: be polite to those who you don't know, or people who are just asking for criticism. If they obviously prefer politeness, keep being polite until they go horribly wrong. If they're small, they may have gotten to know you somewhat and realized that you actually getting angry may be an indicator of them screwing up royally. There's one person, he wrote a story rather similar to another, more popular story. I compared the first two chapters in a really long post, mostly positive towards the new story. I continued to read it, and then one chapter came along which was so poorly written that I went a bit off the rails.
"There is a feeling I don't usually feel when reading, and it was surfacing during this. There are only 2 other times that I can remember feeling this: one was when someone said that men are bad, disgusting, and vile."
Just a little bit.
So anyways, after that, we had a discussion (a civil one, mind you) in which he asked me for advice on what exactly he did wrong (showed me his thought process) and I showed how those things may not be clear or lead to an entirely different conclusion. The two major aspects are that you keep yourself polite and constructive, and even when you get very angry, at least keep it constructive. Never just say "you suck" or "this sucks" since one's an ad hominem, and both don't have any meaning.
"Actual constructive criticism in a comment thread? Have I struck gold or found Shangri-La?"
Constructive criticism in a comment thread can be rare, but not as rare as you think. However, the chance of constructive criticism appearing is connected to what the video is about. The chance of it appearing will definitely increase if the video is about a topic and what views or claims are made toward it. =Y
I think that if some criticism can be harsh enough to hurt your feelings, it HAS to be. That part when you feel hurt is generally the blindness to a certain inadequacy in your ability being exposed. Only when you can see it you can deal with it. If you are fully aware, then criticism of your work cannot hurt at all, polite or impolite, because you can understand whether is is correct or not.
Having said that, that is not the same as shouting or aggression.
Remember, it wouldn't hurt if it was not true.
Sashrunner The last quote wasn't actually something I said. Rather, it was a quote from someone responding to my criticism of the questionable choice of music on a certain video (the music is too loud to hear the sounds which are present in the video, but it's also far too soft and the words within the song are inaudible because of it, meaning that the possible meaning that could have been conveyed through those words to the video is lost). I was attempting to provide an example of how people think when it comes to criticism on comments. Confusion of the point is most likely due to me not explaining where that quote came from or the context.
That's fair
I knew this was coming ever since the "Taking Criticism" video was released.

I had a friend who volunteered to help edit a story of mine. Litterally, she said that it was the worst book she ever read. From one page.
If you are a girl, do not ask another girl for opinion based advice. It is a genetic imperative for women to put one another down for social advantage, whether they know they are doing it or not. Or in other cases to brown nose. You are unlikely to get neutral advice from a female as a female if you have a social relationship with them.
It depends on who you ask, I think. I asked a different female friend to look it over, and she is giving me honest advice. She's even calling me out on typos. There's a difference between constructive criticism and just criticism. The other girl gave criticism, and this friend gives constructive criticism.
Please, take general terms as general statements, everyone is different, of course. Just a balance of probabilities.
Don't forget that you should never criticize a story for love triangles. Stranger Things has a love triangle and it's great, therefor love triangle make stories better.

**Marvel movie spoiler**
Thank you about mentioning target audience. I read movie reviews of people that don't like what I like because maybe I missed something. This female critic always complains and says the marvel movies are bad because there is no romance. When I read that she only likes romantic comedies all I thought was, then why the fuck is she watching action films if she is biased against the genre. If it's romance she wants, then will she be embarrassed if the movies follow the comics of why Thanos is collecting the infinity stones?
that critic must be the only person in the theater who enjoyed the subplot of Age of Ultron then LOL
Oh, so she's the reason why every movie feels like it needs to put some shitty romance even when it doesn't fit

Criticism should be given with the goal of helping someone improve. Be kind yet honest, sacrificing neither to criticize someone. Just make it clear to the person you’re criticizing that you care and that’s why you’re saying what you are. That way they’ll be more likely to respond to it well.
"Insert -ism here"

It's okay, your channel is -mocking- criticizing entire genres. That's not subject to the same rules as criticizing specific people, because genres don't have feelings that can be hurt.

Who else paused at 2:26 to read that story? It was great!
It looks like a wattpad book
I enjoyed the self aware humour and find this to be a crucial piece of advice to end the year on. I understand that it's meant to be a recurring joke but the Mary sue love triangle as your go to thing to poke fun at may lead to an implication that as long as your story isn't that it's all good.
I want to dislike this video and send angry tweets because it doesn't have a Donald Trump reference

1:54 As a creator, these types of "critics" bother me more than people who just directly insult me. The worst thing you can EVER say to any content creator is just "it's good", because it's too basic to sound like praise, and it effectively says "change nothing." I don't wanna hear that everything's perfectly fine, I just wanna hear what the hell is wrong with my writing!
I have multiple people reading something for me. Thanks for the helpful guide to give them. ;}
Yeah, the internet can be a hive of vileness and empty insults, but it can also be a source of sincere compliments and genuine critique
I had a writing friend on Twitter give me feedback for my query letter and first chapter. It was the best criticism that I've ever received. To the point and addresses why the problems are problems
But what happened after Jeff, Steve and Anthony oiled up?

Whenever I write a story I always ask my readers to give me criticism, much better than just receiving hugs and kisses from all around.
Make sure that you argue with the person you're criticizing, and make it as personal as possible as soon as possible - and never give any indication that you believe they will - or even can - change.
4:20 - 4:35
So many internet "critics" need to see this!
This is actually a perfect commentary on the subject. And especially from 4:20 onwards, it really applies to video game fandoms, anime fandoms, and perhaps the worst fandoms of them all; kids cartoon fandoms.
0/10. Not enough love dohecahedrons.
He managed to shoehorn love triangle in a video totally unrelated to any form of storytelling
This video is everything. Also shout out to 120 Days of Sodom aka the greatest nightmare fuel of all time.
I went onto its Wikipedia page expecting it not to be that bad. God I was so wrong.
Lauren Cleveley same here don't make the same mistake
Lauren Cleveley now read the book and you'll prefer the wiki
From the Wikipedia page:
“The characters consider it normal, even routine, to sexually abuse very young children, both male and female. A lot of attention is given to feces, which the men consume as a delicacy. They designate the chapel for defecation.”
Aaaand that’s all I need to see of this book.
You should do a collab with Overly Sarcastic Production
I feel like one of the issues with giving criticism is that we aren't really taught how to give good feedback. I didn't really learn how to give decent feedback until I took creative writing and we had to give feedback for every single person's short stories.

The love triangle dystopia is becoming the next illuminazi- i meant illuminati.
Can you do an episode on horror /creepypasta?
so basically a video explaining the creative prosses of Jeff the killer.
Apolo Trevent IV.5 he already made some about slasher movies and survival horror
he could make one talking about horror in general, like "how to write a scary story: just make it all about gore and jumpscares". creepypasta would be awesome too 😃
Leandro Peixoto de Melo I mean, you can't write a jumpscare
Leandro Peixoto de Melo you are assuming bad creepypasta has anything to do with horror. Is just gore and teen ocs
I've gotten perfect criticism like "you made an error". Thanks, that'll help me know what to fix. Or "you misunderstood the original statement". Okay, which of all statements did I misunderstood? In what way can you see that I have misunderstood it? - Perfect help.
I feel like Digibro died from this video.

The comedic timing of the spelling error is kinda fun
Seeing people botch criticism is somewhat frustrating when the piece of work being criticized is godawful because the artist responsible is way less likely to not only ignore the criticism present, but ignore reasonable criticism from others.
This comment is completely useless because you said less when you should’ve said more. Please never give another opinion for the rest of your life because your lack of grammar proves what a bad person you are
/j
This sounds like every "critique" against StarWars I've ever heard.
I laughed so hard at this one! These videos are always great. Why not give "advice" about writing comedy, memoirs, kid's books, or fanfiction? This is a bit different than what you usually do, but you could also give "advice" on starting a blog or youtube channel.
I think this was perfectly timed for the TLJ response LOL
Max Von Britannia Painfully true. I thought it was alright. Not the *best thing ever* the critics made it believe, but also not the *worst thing since Hitler* the internet made it to be.
Also, a critic should never acknowledge any strengths in any work. Because that might mean people will take a slight interest in it! All those OTHER reviewers listing strengths as well as weaknesses are just BLIND and STUPID.
Because remember:
Any Negative Feedback = Truth and Honesty
Any Positive Feedback = Lies and Blindness
But seriously, most of the time, I find some of these reviewers who think that just because they are smaller in subscribers and views, that anything negative they say about anything is “real and genuine”. The only reason they do this isn’t to actually offer genuine criticism, but instead to “play a character”. At least, they’re able to use that excuse when someone calls out their flawed criticism. “Uhh, I was TOTALLY just playing a character when I said that. Stop taking it so seriously!” And to those people:
Your ability to list flaws about something doesn’t make you better than anyone else. Your word isn’t gospel. You aren’t brave just for listing some mistakes. Actually list genuine flaws AND strengths (yes, BOTH) about something instead of masking mindless nitpicking and berating as “honest criticism”.
You should do a video about mentor figures in fantasy/sci-fi and how they almost always seem to die. Seems like it would make a good addition to The Chosen One video.
It is a logical move. It is the only character you spend time with that becomes superfluous later on.
@Terrible Writing Advice
I love your channel. End of story. Also, I have a bunch of friends attempting to write their own stories too and they... have mixed opinions about the channel.
"And one day, it might be their turn..." Terrible Writing Advice, 12/23/2017
nobody ever likes to look in the mirror for this kinda stuff
RascaldeesV2 yeah you're friends probably don't like it cause it might hit a little close too home. They might also not like terrible writing advice cause he can come off as snarky 1:33 so they might ignore his advice.
Also J.P. advice isn't absolute. It's pretty clear he is a science fiction/fantasy writer. For example the love triangle can be an effective tool when writing a Romance or a Drama. In a Romance can be used as a contrast and a test for your main couple to show how strong their bond is. In a Drama it could be used to show how messy interpersonal relationships between people can be.
Though for genre like action, sci-fi, and fantasy love triangles are usually a crutch to fill in plot. So it makes sense why J.P. avoid them.
@@waynehayes912 I mean, hey, no one's advice is absolute. TWA has interesting things to say, but you don't have to agree.
It's awesome your channel can poke fun at itself. Love your videos and they've really helped me think over the concept and fundamentals of writing and storytelling. Merry Christmas.
And remember, if the book has ANY amount of negative aspects, the good aspects are worthy of bullyi- I mean criticizing as well!
Happy holidays JP! Thanks again!

Guess CZcams’s sober.
It's an Eve-mas miracle!
It's about time
I had a friend that hated Overwatch just because it was popular, she borderline insulted everything about the game, even though she never played it herself, and when I said "You act like it killed your father, why do you hate it so much?"...Her response was "The more popular it is, the more we should criticise it, right?". Yeeaaaaaaaah, no bias there.
With the way shit is hyped up.. Can't say I really blame her. Opposite is also bad, probs worse in case of popular shit.
If she acts like Overwatch killed her father, I don't even want to think about how she treats Undertale or Cuphead.
TheR iS NOthing WRONG WiTh UNDERTALE the Best Gameee EVAR!
Seriously, though, it's good stuff, especially for the price.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with Undertale, Thomas. If you read the OP and my reply comment again carefully, you'll realize the only thing I implied was that it's popular (possibly more popular than Overwatch). >_>
I have been waiting for this one,

Its everything I wanted.
Don't forget that when you when giving criticism over time to one particular writer, you become harsher and decrease your amount of compassion while doing so, especially when the writer doesn't make the amount of progress you deem necessary.
Got a suggestion for a future video: Strong Female Characters
Betta66 not really. He has already done mary sues. Unless your refering to strong women which no, he does not need to do a video on strong characters who happen to be female. ;).
Hes done mary sues. He can do the fact minorities and women were written horribly for a long time though that.
I don't mean Mary Sues. Those are different. I'm talking about that "strong female character" archetype that's so prevalent these days. I define the archetype, at least when it's done well, as a woman who is accomplished and independent. She has an arc that isn't just supporting a man. She can support a man, sure, but she does other shit, too. She has agency, motivations, and goals. She makes decisions and does things that actually affect the plot of the movie. But most importantly, she is genuinely likable, charismatic, and/or interesting. There are recent examples of the archetype done well, such as Mako Mori in Pacific Rim, Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, Diana in Wonder Woman, and Rey in the new Star Wars movies (fight me). But think of all the movies that advertised themselves as having strong female characters not because the movie actually had any, but because they thought it would help sell the movie. In the last two years, we had stuff like the Ghostbusters reboot, The Emoji Movie, and Transformers: The Last Knight. They might get the "accomplished and independent" parts down, but they neglect to make them likable or interesting. Oh, and they somehow feel the need to constantly remind the audience that they're strong, independent women who don't need no man, rather than demonstrate that through their actions.
But writing a strong female character is easy! Just have her wear camo and combat boots, never wear makeup, and use her combat boots to kick every potential suitor in the ... face. Bonus points if she swears, lifts weights, or uses the line "don't need no man."
timing could not be better: before crishtmas and after the Last Jedi debut.
Juan Jose I was just thinking that too.
yeah, that was all the crybabies arguments, you summed them up pretty well, good job
last time i will answer such bullshit, but you guys are the truly fanboys here. all you guys ever want from star is Darth Vader and a saga EXACTLY like the original trilogy OR just Luke, Han Solo doing awesome shit. if you guys ever see yourselves in th mirror, you would just watch the original trilogy and have a blast instead of just watching the new ones and just complain mindlessly and try to make everyone else experience miserable. just get of your high horse and go fuck yourself
okay keep crying all you want is not like Disney gives a single fuck about you.
I'm a fanboy. I will try and defend the Last Jedi, which I thought was a great movie.
1. Callous dismissal of old, well loved characters. Luke was definitely not callously dismissed, the way I see it. He sacrificed himself to keep the Resistance alive, mainly, and to teach Kylo Ren a lesson, that the past won't die on him until he actually comes to terms with it rather than killing it. Of course, the character in question is really Admiral Ackbar. Yeah, it was sad to see him go with hardly a mention, but he really was just famous (on the Internet) for one (iconic) dialogue. Return of the Jedi would not have gotten any hate if he had died in that movie, right? Two characters who should have gotten more screen time are R2-D2 and C-3PO, though, but not a flaw by any means. I don't really know who else. Chewbacca? Not really. He found a place in a story led by the newer characters.
2. Aimless plot. All right. We know that the purpose of these movies is money. All of this is pointless. But they are there, set in the Star Wars universe, a renewed battle between the light and dark sides of the Force. In this installment, the battle continues, picking up from The Force Awakens. That's basically it, and all that it ever should have been. I actually think it's brilliant that the efforts of (most of) the characters were wasted in the end. On one hand you have Finn and Rose, the ones dispatched on the mission. What was wrong with what they did? They did their best efforts to execute the plan, which was nothing wrong given the circumstances. Correct me if I'm wrong though, been months since I saw the movie. Finn and Rose showed character development, which is a thing you'll scoff at telling you it's in The Last Jedi, but my thoughts. They learned plenty from each other. And what they spend the entire movie doing, they failed at it. But in a war where the good side is hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, a daring secret mission, even in which the heroes are pitted against the clock, which doesn't come to fruition, isn't outside the realm of possibility. Then Poe and Holdo. When I saw the movie, I immediately formed some understanding of that part of the plot, the conflict between the two. Poe is insisting that a mission be carried out that would allow the Resistance to escape from the First Order, but Holdo denies it because it's too risky in the sense they would run out of time to do anything else, and she has a plan of her own, which I think logical to withhold from him because it's basically abandoning ship (and the resources they have along with it) and running to the nearest planet where they will be basically stranded, eventually to be caught by the First Order, either on the way, which is most likely, or after they stock up resources from an abandoned Rebel base which sounds completely wrong (in the end everyone had to leave via Millennium Falcon, which is more sensible than there being plenty of spaceships for them to escape). Both plans were risky, both plans had merits, both characters thought they were right because that's the way their characters are. And then Holdo's plan happens because she is the superior officer, and Poe realizes that having a chip on his shoulder wasn't the best thing after all, which I call character development. Aimless, many would say, but it's what would happen to a hot-headed soldier in the tensions of battle especially when being chased down, I feel. Then when the First Order starts shooting them down, Holdo thought up that stunt (if that was something everyone would think of, then Star Wars would be a montage of spaceships ramming into each other at lightspeed). And I don't really feel that what Rey did was useless either. She went to become a Jedi and get Luke to fight for the Resistance, but encountered a very different man instead who taught her a bunch of more realistic non-Jedi like messages. Through more of Yoda's wise messages and his encounter with Rey, Luke has a change of heart and rushes in to save the day at the end, and sacrifices himself. Rey more or less discovers herself in a lot of character development, with her character arc just waiting to be finished now in the final Episode. Her parents not being anyone worthwhile will be interesting for her to deal with in Episode IX. And with Kylo Ren and Snoke, I'm actually happy that Snoke's dead without any knowledge of who he is because it's a clear message that Kylo Ren was always the important one. Snoke was a ruthless and uncaring mentor who trained Kylo Ren for his own personal motivations, to create his own Darth Vader, and rejected him seeing that he was weak in comparison. Clearly, Kylo Ren was destined to kill him and take over the role of Supreme Leader. Then there's the climaxes. All the storylines converge into a lot of intense fast paced action scenes happening one after the other. It ends making you question what will happen in Episode IX-it should, but doesn't. The Force Awakens ended on a cliffhanger that the Internet generated huge buzz around. The Last Jedi ends in a thoughtful way making you wonder about the themes that will be reflected in Episode IX and the nature of the final movie, which no one cares about. I mean, I do.
This is my own interpretation of The Last Jedi's story, in the attempt of me telling you the plot is not aimless. I thought it was a nice story that made a pretty great film. The battle began in The Force Awakens, continued in the Last Jedi and will conclude in Episode IX. I really hope that it manages to unify the three movies into another amazing trilogy in the Star Wars universe (Prequels not amazing, just good, and the OT just fantastic. Sequels are great, I would say.).
3. Bland/unlikable new characters. I can see where you're coming from. To some extent. Every character from the original trilogy is instantly recognizable. Even from the prequels, we can identify some characters like Count Dooku and General Grievous by name and look. But these characters were created before three Marvel movies were released every year. It may very well be the fact that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is just so awesome and Thor Ragnarok was a superb movie. But these characters are absolutely not bland. This is a darker movie, and none of the new characters present themselves as likable, except the Porgs, and Rose, a helpful and compassionate soul who teaches us that evil is conquered by caring for others, not just warfare. It differentiates the good side from the bad. But seriously, the characters are not bland. They have personalities. DJ being disillusioned with the war and looking out only for himself was a nice touch. Holdo is pretty heroic and noble, but she does have an ego, which complicates everything in a way that fans just trashed even though I think it offers an insight into just how good the good guys are, something even more apparent with Luke's character. His character is pretty deep. The farm-boy is long gone, but that is what the fans wanted to see. I would have liked to see a bit of that in him as well, but picking up from Return of the Jedi, and given what had happened to him in between, the character that we got here was very believable. Tortured with doubt about himself, deeming himself a failure, questioning the legitimacy of the Jedi and the reputation of the Skywalker name. He's gone down a pretty deep rabbit-hole. Then Yoda shows up and proves yet again he is the wisest and makes the old bearded Luke feel like a learner again.
4. "No, fool: we simply want the old EU stories of Luke's New Jedi Order, which represented the logical next step in the story, rather than the nihilistic trash that Rian Johnson shat out instead."
"Ah: a fanboy, i see. I apologize for wasting my time with an illogical cretin such as yourself."
"No, the only who who is mindlessly complaining here, dear fanboy, is you."

5. Conclusion-I would like you to elaborate on the bland character and aimless plot because I like writing stories myself and I think I could learn here from someone so knowledgeable in storytelling.
I am not forcing anyone to like The Last Jedi but I really want to see the hate stop. And comments like yours are cancer.

Animated story time Critic Community in a nutshell
Got any awful advice for writing a holiday special?
Casual CraftMan don't
Make the plot based on It's A Wonderful Life, and make sure there's "magical" snowfall at the end of the episode.
How to make the bestest holiday special:
1) Focus on a family of hairy creatures who speak a strange language unintelligible to humans and write entire scenes of them talking without translation.
2) Random cameos.
3) Plenty of stirring and whipping.
4) Grandpa enjoying strangely sexual VR.
5) ????
6) Profit!
A new episode!!! ❤❤ just what I wanted for Christmas
I love this channel so much. It has helped me a lot (surprisingly).
Great video!
