  • Last year we took out our 4 year old strawberry beds so we could replace them with easy to care for raised beds. We made the new beds with 4x4 hemlock lumber and only a few structural screws to hold them together. Any good 4x4 lumber that's good for ground contact would work well.

Thanks for the video I am glad we did ours in beds. This will be our second year. I hated plulling all those buds, but I am sure we will be rewarded

What is the reason for making the beds square? (have never grown strawberries, but planning to next year)

Hi Lynn! They are square only for convenience. I had old lumber laying around and it was roughly 4 feet so....I made square ones. Keep in mind the size so you can reach into the middle of the bed without stepping in them. I find 36 inches is perfect for me.
Whatever size you make them be sure to fill them well. Over time the soil will compact.

@@CleanSlateFarm Many thanks! I'm thinking about building beds around the apple trees... mower barrier and weeds. Trees just went in this year.

Total compost from a worn/cow farm. Aged about one year.
