(I should note that this is only the first 30 seconds or so of the test. It cut in with the standard beep, but the scroll didn't actually say anything, and it went back to the Lady Gaga music within 15 seconds, and then the music played for another 30+ seconds.)

Here is what happened
I remember when Time Warner cable was here in Houston, every channel would revert to the weather channel when they would do an EAS test. This was because the weather channel was the station they had the EAS receiver connected to at the cable head. This happened with some Comcast subscribers during this same test when QVC appeared.
When a Directv station goes off the air it reverts to music which is what happened here. If you ever channel hopped on Directv, you'll notice that all the channels that are off the air or have a message, have music playing on them. They put the EAS header on one of those virtual off air stations (probably the one their EAS receiver is connected to) and then simulcasted it on all the stations. This was why you heard Lady Gaga.
It isn't practical for them to have an EAS receiver on every channel so they just put it on one and then simulcast it to the others when there is an alert.
I'm aware of why it happened. It was just funny, which was why I shared it.
But thank you for sharing - I know a lot of people didn't actually know.

Probably the eas tones got mixed up in the radio station and instead of the alert tone going out, a song from the station went out. This has happened many times before with other eas warnings/tests, at least from what I have seen(I recorded a test that lasted over 5 minutes long on my TV - consisting of songs of a radio station.

@TheLucifer92 Today was the first national test of the Emergency Alert System. Usually it's just handled locally. DirecTV was supposed to cut to the familiar Beep Beep for the test alert, but it didn't- it treated that screen like DirecTV treats any service interruption. It puts up an image and plays some Top 40 song.

Hey if the EAS played Bjork's Human Behavior, I would jumped through a window.
I think they tuned to a radio station to receive the alert, or there was interference, OR DirectTV just likes lady gaga.
So Directtv also has a music channel that plays for other screens like this (like live events that are counting down or ending) They played that channel and not the EAS one.
@@WhitneyDrake No i'm saying they may of either tuned to a radio station receiving the EAS so there endec could pick it up or they just put it on to relex people because Emergency Action Notification are used in events like nukes and 9/11. I only know how EAS systems work. No one really knows why this happened. Also every signal EAS participant must relay an Emergency Action Notification that alert is that serious.
@@chief-ac594And I'm telling you that I've had directv employees reach out to tell me that when they set up the EAS alert, someone messed up and cut to the wrong audio channel. That's it. In the decade I've had this post, I've gotten a lot of messages explaining it. Lol

@atvrider7 Not to anger the Little Monsters (I am one myself), but I agree. There was nothing about the test that actually made it seem more than a standard service disruption message. And it didn't reflect well on DirecTV well at all.

No, I think its scarier, the fact that they can't get a National Test right scares the bajeebers out of me....
To be fair, this was only the 2nd time in the history of the EAN system (which was first created back in the 1960's) being activated. before 2011, they didn't do any tests of it, the 1st activation was accidental and was in 1973. Since then they have done another test (Most recent was 2016) and it was a lot better. 88% of America got the message normally.

one thing i miss about having directv is how they DONT do these stupid tests every month/week like they do with cable. and anything beats those dam beeping noises
from what I read, it's because it'd be near impossible to get every station to get their own EAS equipment, so what they do instead is they dedicate a channel for EAS signals (usually a normal channel, like TWC uses the weather channel) and the boxes simply get a remote signal to switch to this channel
