    Looks like a very good elixir for when you're actually sick/have symptoms and are sure you have some infection or coming down with something. This is a VERY powerful antimicrobial combo and you're risking wiping up a good part of your microbiome if you drink this, in my opinion, so this seems more 'medicine' than 'health maintenance' , just my 2 cents.

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs  Před 16 dny +2

      Your two cents is accurate. I would only take this if needed and when sick. That is the only time I use strong anti-virals or immune stimulants. The challenge with sharing information on this platform is that both Google Inc. and Health Canada have rules so I am not allowed to tell people how to use the medicine. So your comment is appreciated and hopefully people will read it!

      General rule of thumb is we use about half as much dried herb as we would use fresh. The honey is to taste so if you like things sweet you would want to add more. As for the alcohol, fill the jar up! This is more of a folk recipe so no specific measurements.

    Thank you so much for this video. My first oregano tincture experiment (prior to finding you) was a failure. I had watched other videos and the recommendation was to dry the fresh oregano and I just used oregano and vodka. When I went to press the tincture, the smell was off… funky sweet. I decided to dump it and start over.
    Today I pressed a batch of oregano thyme tincture made with your recipe and instructions and the result was much better. I don’t have anything to compare it to in order to gauge that it came out as it should. How do you know if a tincture is good?
    I was also curious about what to do if you notice any alcohol loss during the time it’s macerating. I saw a recommendation elsewhere (again, before I found you) to open the jar and top it off to ensure that the herbs don’t mold. What is your recommendation?
    Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I’m hoping to join your membership soon, but these videos are so helpful in the meantime.

      Hmm this is an interesting question that I've never thought about before. For me , as long as I am consistent with herb to alcohol ratios and that I am using a certain percentage of alcohol, I trust the end product. I hope that makes sense!
      As for evaporation, I top off with a bit of alcohol, put the lid back on, shake well and then press.
      Good luck with your medicine making endeavours!

    • @chelrich
      @chelrich Před 5 měsíci

      @@SpiraeaHerbs so you only top off right before you press - that makes sense. So there’s no concern for molding or oxidizing while it’s sealed then, even if the herbs aren’t completely covered? (I’m talking just the very very top)

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs  Před 5 měsíci

      @@chelrich I have never had mold grow in a tincture in all my years of making them. Infused oils... that is definitely an issue. There is a small issue with oxidation, but that often cannot be avoided. I would rather have the top up of alcohol for higher yields personally.

    • @SpiraeaHerbs
      @SpiraeaHerbs  Před 2 lety +1

      I have to respectfully disagree with that, but prefacing that this has been my own personal experience. When we dry herbs we actually lose some of the water-soluble constituents, as the plant dries and the water evaporates off. So in order to get the most whole and complete picture of a plant's chemical constituents, I use fresh plant matter. Potency also has a lot to do with the herb to alcohol ratio, which can vary depending on how people were taught on how to make medicines. Again just my experience of course 🙏 Please do what feels best for you.

In my country and in the US (as is my understanding) there isn't really a such thing as a "certified" herbalist. That being said, if you want to go into clinical practice you may wish to attend a school that has a structured curriculum and covers all the necessary courses to give you the confidence to practice.
      If your end goal is to support you and your family, you may wish to pursue a self-study/self-paced kind of course. For example, like my membership platform.

      @@jeffreyjones615 Ah yes. This is a very old piece of advice around metal and honey. Apparently that myth has since been busted BUT some beekeepers still warn against metal being in honey for long periods of time. But for short periods of time like I did in this video, it should be just fine and safe (as is my understanding).
