I used vodka mostly, some with rum and always dried herbs for my tinctures. The one I use the most is feverfew for shoulder pain and the taste is nasty, but it works. Technically I guess, my flavored extracts are really tinctures because I use rum with vanilla beans and vodka with my other flavors such as coffee. I found this one very interesting. Many Blessings!

I've been watching videos at Homegrown Herbalist, and he says the tinctures have a virtually unlimited shelf life. I also read somewhere (MAYBE Rosemary Gladstar but not sure) that when using fresh herbs you should allow them to wilt first, just to reduce the moisture level. I maybe shouldn't be putting information out there, since I just started learning about herbal remedies about a month ago...that's my disclaimer.

I honestly think the reason there is so much confusion and every herbalist has a different answer is because it either depends on where they got their information or it is simply opinion. I have my own opinions on it all and try to make that clear. I experiment with more "unconventional" ways (because they do not follow the popular herbalist guidelines) and I find what works for us and I have learned a lot by thinking outside the box

Good job sharing what you’re learning! Keep sharing, it helps you solidify your education and it helps others to focus on what they need to research for themselves and thus you are spurring herbalism education! Just remember to always find three independent resources to answer your questions, or to identify herbs and their medicinal components.

One more thing I wanted to add is if you have someone that needs a tincture and literally can not take the taste (I call my hubby a baby when he does this, lol) Directly before he consumes certain ones I will put the tincture into capsules until I’ve given him the full dose… now you can NOT pre make these as they will dissolve into a puddle and be wasted but you’ve got long enough to fill it, hand it, swallow it… sometimes he has to take five or six capsules but as long as he doesn’t taste it he’s good!

    Tincture vs Extract
Tinctures and extracts are both concentrated forms of herbal remedies, but they differ in their preparation, ingredients, and uses. Here are the key differences:
    Tincture:
    Preparation:
Tinctures are made by soaking herbs in a solvent, typically alcohol or a mixture of alcohol and water, for a few weeks.
The alcohol extracts the active compounds from the herbs and acts as a preservative.
    Ingredients:
The primary solvent is usually alcohol, but glycerin or vinegar can be used as alternatives.
The herb used can be fresh or dried.
    Concentration:
Tinctures generally have a lower concentration of active compounds compared to extracts.
The typical ratio of herb to solvent in tinctures is 1:5 or 1:10 (weight/volume).
    Usage:
Tinctures are typically taken orally in small doses, often diluted in water or another liquid.
They are used for a wide range of medicinal purposes, depending on the herb used.
    Shelf Life:
Due to the alcohol content, tinctures have a long shelf life, often several years.
    Extract:
    Preparation:
Extracts are made by using solvents such as alcohol, water, glycerin, or oil to pull out the active compounds from herbs.
The process can involve various methods, including cold extraction, hot extraction, or using pressure.
    Ingredients:
The solvent can vary widely, including alcohol, water, glycerin, or even oils.
    Concentration:
Extracts are typically more concentrated than tinctures.
The herb to solvent ratio can be much higher, such as 1:1 or 1:2, leading to a stronger product.
    Usage:
Extracts can be used in various forms, including liquid extracts, powders, or capsules.
They are often used for more potent and targeted therapeutic effects.
    Shelf Life:
The shelf life of extracts varies depending on the solvent used, but alcohol-based extracts have a long shelf life similar to tinctures.
    Summary:
Tinctures are typically alcohol-based, less concentrated, and have a long shelf life. They are used for general health purposes and are taken in small doses.
Extracts can be made with various solvents, are more concentrated, and can be tailored for specific therapeutic effects. They come in different forms and have varying shelf lives.
The choice between a tincture and an extract depends on the desired potency, the method of administration, and the specific health needs.

With the darker alcohols like bourbon and rum, those are usually aged in wooden barrels , hence the color and flavor. The alcohol has already gone through one extraction by the time it gets to the shelf so it's kind of like a full stomach that can't comfortably take more food. It can take flavor added to it of course but I don't think an individual would get the full benefit from it like one would with vodka or glycerin.

  • @JulieDobbins.76
    @JulieDobbins.76 Před rokem +5

Khroma's information on extracts and tinctures goes against conventional herbal wisdom. Tinctures, as a general rule, are more potent than extracts, which is why tinctures are usually drop dosage and extracts require a larger dose. With tinctures you are getting both alcohol and water soluble constituents. Solvents used for extracts are only pulling out the water soluble constituents. Tinctures also have a longer shelf life than extracts. I highly suspect that they are saying extracts are more potent and last longer because it looks like they only sell extracts. It appears to me that they may be giving false information to promote their own products.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před rokem +4

It all depends on where you get your information. When I first started youtube over 6 years ago I had believed tinctures are stronger but then had people coming in correcting me and telling me extracts are stronger and I have looked it up in other places and came across that same information so it is not just that one place. Generally speaking, I still believe most tinctures can be stronger but it all depends on just how you make them and what you are making

I'll tell y'all what has been a wonderfully helpful resource for me...and I'm pretty sure I learned of it from Heidi. It's Leslie Taylor's website (and book), The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs. All the info that is in the book, is on the website (freely), by the way. I got the book, too, because I don't expect to have the Internet forever. ;)
Anyway, her book/website has a section about how to prepare herbal remedies, which is very clear. The different methods she explains are: infusions, decoctions, tinctures, macerations, poultices and compresses, baths and bathing remedies.
I can't recommend her book/website highly enough! Between Heidi and Leslie Taylor, I've found courage and gained confidence to wade into this (formerly) scary non-pharmaceutical world! :)

I don't know where they got the idea that a vodka tincture has limited shelf life. I know of someone that has a poke root tincture over 15 years old and it's still going strong. I'll also bottle my tinctures and a couple I've just forgotten about or haven't gotten around to decanting yet and one is a peppermint that's two years old and is super strong. When I make a tincture I've always been overly cautious of the volatile oils so I never used dried plant matter, only fresh. Too many water and alcohol soluble components are lost when dried. Using everclear for a tincture is closing in to a pharmaceutical but can also drive people away from making their own medicine because of the math and ratios. Some get discouraged and others kind of neurotic about what is supposed to be a very easy process when using vodka. By the time you're done with the everclear and adding water back to it to make it safe for consumption you end up with a alcohol and water ratio of 100 proof anyway so just use 80 to 100proof vodka instead.

Thanks for this! I can't find my book on herbal medicine....it's here somewhere! So, thank goodness I have CZcams. I just learned last week that apple cider vinegar and honey used with herbs is called an oxymel. I made a cough syrup with those, lemon balm, mint, ginger. It is quite tasty, but that vinegar really burns on the way down! I think I'll try wine, although I don't like/buy wine, but I do live in wine country, and it would be better than vinegar. Although I do enjoy switchel, haymaker punch, etc., in ginger ale or iced tea when doing hard work outside in summer.
Right now, I'm learning about comfrey, and have a comfrey poultice on my knee.

I gotta watch this again, because, as you mentioned, this info seems backward to how I've been understanding the subject. Granted, I'm new to this, but now I'm more confused!
I followed a gal's "recipe" to make a spruce tip "tincture"....filled a quart jar with the fresh spruce tips, then filled the jar with EverClear. That was back in the spring, when the tips were young and tender. After a couple of months, I strained some into a small dropper bottle, then left the rest in the jar, just as it was, and it's still sitting in my cupboard.
As an aside, hubby likes us to use EC, primarily because it's supposed to last forever. However, when I strained some into the dropper, I only filled it half full, then topped it off with distilled water. That was using 190-proof EC. I'd rather add regular vodka, so I don't need to dilute it...thus one less thing to remember! ;)
So, did I make a tincture or extract??? And did I damage the tender tips by using EC?

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před rokem +2

High proof alcohol = Tincture. That is the one thing I believe I have always been right on. As far as damage, I really do not know, much of that is hypothesis and I would not know what all falls under that though I would feel that all woody type items would be fine.
As far as how long they last, I currently have a little elderberry tincture I make back in 2015 or2016 from vodka and it is still good. I have made extracts from honey and wine that have sat for years as well, no problem
