Mindfulness is a state of present-moment awareness and non-judgmental attention to one's experiences, including thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. So, while they have some similarities, metacognition focuses ONLY on cognition while mindfulness is a broader practice. Also, mindfulness is primarily therapeutic, while metacognition is focused on learning new information. As the OP said - It's a self assessment tool that helps people improve.
@Will Wilde Have I tried it? I have a handful of published academic papers on metacogniton and am a practitioner of mindfulness. You wrongly assumed that I was anti-mindfulness simply because you asked a question and I answered it. I suggest thinking about why you did that.

Metacognition is simply the ability to assess your thoughts from a detached viewpoint. It's a self judgement tool that helps u improve yourself
