what would y ou say is the difference, or is there one, between the capacity for metacognition and the practice of mindfulness?

fun question! wouldn't the capacity of an idea only be limited be its physical representation through intentional practices? and would "mindfulness" be the primary mechanism for defining the capacity of metacognition or would mindfulness be one of a variety of tools to even begin considering measuring capacity of metacognition?

Dear Brett, thank you for your very interesting question. I really do think that this subject could raise some questions. I will try to be brief and pragmatic because the answer maybe quite complex. Research on metacognition and mindfulness followed different paths within different theoretical schools. Metacognition was originated from seventies and eighties cognitive science and mindfulness was imported in the nineties from oriental practices by clinical authors perfiled in the so-called third generation cognitive behavioral therapies (e.g., acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy...). However, when we look to the definitions about these psychological constructs they are quite different. Metacognition is the ability (or the set of abilities), that allows humans to process and reflect about own´s internal states and others intentions and behaviors. So, it can be seen a as set of cognitive or neurocognitive skills or higher order processing modes. However, mindfulness is different because it can be seen as complex trait or state of mind which encompass a ability to tolerate internal emotional states and have an non-judgmentally attitude towards these internal experiences. So, mindfulness have a skill domain (be able to tolerate and notice internal states) and an principle, value or attitudinal disposition (non-judgmentally attitude). In my perspective mindfulness occurs within the self-self domain of metacognition, specially in the experiential-self (the I-position where individuals are in a full sensorial mode), while the observer or reflective-self is in a "suspended mode." And yes, we need to have at least some metacognitive ability to practice mindfulness. However, as i said before, individuals need to first develop some attitudinal dispositions to practice it. And off course, here some personality traits may play a mediational role. I will leave my article about metacognition in a comment below. Well I hope that you find my response useful about these very interesting points.

Dear Greg, thank you for your question. As I said before mindfulness may be developed by the self-self metacognitive domain in a dialectical synthesis from experiential self and reflexive self. And we need to differentiate a content of thoughts from the process of thought and the associated skills or properties of these systems. Please, see my response bellow and my article about metacognition.
