My wife and I been living in Canada now for 8 months and I can honestly agree that it is expensive. In South Africa I wasn't earning much and living month to month and now I am earning a lot more money in Canada but still living month to month. The weather is kak in winter but summer and autumn are awesome. Reason for leaving Mzansi was too much damn crime. Been a victim of 3 attempted hijackings, 1 mugging, 2 armed robberies, seen people get stabbed in front of me, had a friend who got shot in the neck. Eventually you say enough is enough. I now have no issues walking with my wife late at night, we don't worry about locking doors, neighbours dogs barking at night doesn't freak me out, seeing kids play in the street unsupervised. Literally ZERO crime where I live now! Its the safety, security and freedom of living that will keep me here. I do miss South Africa especially the beach, the people, braai's, cultures and the never ending summer but I do not regret my decision when it comes to the quality of life we have here.
I'm sorry to hear about how crime affected you personally here in SA. Our government needs to sort out the issue of crime and our unsafe & porous borders. The issue of safety should be top on their list or else this country will continue to lose our hardworking, peace loving and skilled workers while attracting criminals and terrorists in our country. If they can sort that, it should be easy to deal with documented SAn criminals and illegal ones. We noticed how our law enforcement was all over the streets during the recent EFF rally aka 😢 'national shut down", if they can do that, why can't they deal with crime and corruption swiftly?
Sorry for you horrible experiences in South Africa, I guess for us we are stuck because in Canada we will have to deal with racism over and above the problems you have listed above. Africa is our only home.
As an black person living in the Netherlands everything is expensive but exceptionally good for kids, family and women safety with general well being.. even though I miss my pap & mogodu,braais and south African weather... i suffer less from trauma and PTSD😂
Hey all, I thought I'd add my thoughts too given that I've come from the UK and lived in South Africa for 14 years now. I've lived in Limpopo and now based in the western cape. I love it here. I find people so friendly. The UK is a very unfriendly place - I found my own people cold and un-interested. Here you can sit down next to someone you never met and learn their whole life story then they are gone again. The weather is fantastic here. I'm a teacher (in a private school admittedly) but find school children here far more respectful. My kids get a good education. I've been robbed more in the UK than here. I walk at night in the streets in cape town and don't feel particularly unsafe. There are just areas you avoid. The grass is not greener on the other side - prices are rising everywhere. Everyone is getting squeezed financially!
Wow this is so interesting. Everyone would make you think leaving South Africa is the best decision but I guess it's all a matter of perspective. And for me, I think I'd like to go over to Canada not for safety reasons but because the Canadian dollar would enable me earn more so I can return to SA and invest and enjoy my labor better by God's grace.
After reading almost all comments, the whole debate boils down to: What does one prioritize? What trade-offs is one willing to make? How optimistic is one, that the situation at home will get better, or at least not get worse in the next 5 to 10 years? Where is one currently positioned on the economic landscape? I believe cold weather or expensive housing would not be a deterrent to someone who has suffered a series of violent crimes, or a masters graduate that has been sitting at home for the past five years. At the same time a wealthy person who owns an off-the-grid mansion in a safe estate may not see the need to relocate.
The reality of the situation, even for the wealthy, is the optimism for the future and what are their expectations. As you said, you can send your child to the most expensive school, get a masters from UCT and yet they're sitting at home becausethey cant get a job or because of the quota system. What about the fear of crime when shopping or trying to go out with family and friends; the lifestyle aspect of it all... living safely in your gated community isn't ideal and quite isolated. There is also the case of expats who left in 2013 saying they'll come back to SA 10 years later hoping things would be better... is SA better now than it was 10 years ago... or even 10 years before that or has it been deteriorating in the last 20 years? Wealthy South Africans cannot live in a bubble unfortunately.
@@TAMISHZN 10 years later..Sa has gotten worse..but for who..if you upper middle class..you get to live a great life..better than in Canada..Oz..Nz..living in the UK is a no go. Crime and loadshedding are big negatives. In Cape Town this is a lesser concern.
@@jldp24 The upper middle class in South Africa has a household income of UP TO R75k a month... with the latest rate hike, a bond in a decent gated estate is around R30k a month, levies around R6k, Municipality rates, electricity etc around R6k, car installments of around R15k for 2 decent cars, crawford school fees for 2 kids around R12k... what about internet/dstv/netflix? Groceries? Entertainment? Fuel for the cars? Insurances? The Upper middle class is drowning in SA forget money to go off grid. That's only for the wealthy.

Why must the kids go to Crawford..why take out a massive bond..surely you had to see the mkt overcorrection coming..fuel..education.. housing..you think it's better in Canada????? After visiting a few countries overseas, i was enough. I realised that South Africa is the best country for me. What those countries did well was to make us fall in love with them through media(TV, Movies, Internet etc), regardless of their shortfalls. I have friends who moved to the US, UK, AUS and they keep telling that it's not what they thought. It's ok to visit and explore the world, but I love South Africa and this is my home sweet home.
This is what I experienced when I lived in UK. Nothing will ever compare to living in South Africa hey. Like 0 ! These 1st world countries are good on TV but in reality, you will become very depressed while living there
I live in the UK. I can say that if you are not doing well financially here, low crime and stable electricity grid, quickly become irrelevant as you are struggling to pay your utility bills and other bills. If you can't afford to live in a good area, you will be stuck with bad schools if you have kids. Unfortunately the percentage of kids from those schools going to university is low. Therefore struggle to secure good paying jobs later on in life. They are obviously some benefits living here but if you lived well in SA never take that for granted.
I was going to say that if you have an option to pack your whole life and leave then you’re not doing too badly. Most South Africans don’t have that luxury of just leaving. We have to stay and continue going to ward meetings and continue going to campaign for a better life. It takes all of us to have a passion and investment in making our country better because honestly it is a handful of people who are dividing us and distracting us with petty ideas of race and class. We are all South African and once we put silly differences aside, we’ll realise that more of us that are GOOD. Our country deserves for us to stay, our children deserve a better country. Remove the leaders from power and they will finish each other off. No political party is going to save SA, neither DA, nor EFF, nor ANC, nor IFP, Nor Action SA or anyone who wants to make a career out of empty promises, it is us and only us who can help eAch other.

Running away from a country as opposed to moving towards a country are two different mind sets which create two different approaches. You have to integrate into the way of life of the society you move into - they have different problems. Moving towards a new country allows you to search out the issues those citizens face and then be able to make an informed decision about the cons there and the cons of your originating country.
I agree with you 100% I speak for myself when I say there’s no other country I’d rather live other than Brazil (I’m South African by the way) I’ve visited Brazil 8 times and lived their for two years. My family and friends don’t understand the appeal but what they don’t get is that despite the crime rate, despite all the social and economic challenges…I would choose Rio de Janeiro any day of the week. It’s only once you’ve allowed yourself to be emerged in the culture will one understand.
Yes, the push vs the pull. Obviously, reading some of the comments, many people were pushed by so many bad experiences with crime and service delivery, that the importance of the pull is made less. Then it's just looking for the best "pull" because the push got too strong
I was having a conversation with a German couple while my wife and I were on honeymoon and we were talking about South Africa and how we have plans to move to another country and they brought up "is that not disservice to South Africa", instead of fixing the problem people with skills and money run away from the problem (I.e immigrating). And that is so true and I understand that... But when you live in a Country where the Country (Government) does really care about you and the people around you. You kinda do have to stop and sometimes selfishly think about your future and what you want out of this very finite thing we call life.

I always wanted to move overseas but once I realized that I could literally buy a mansion with the kind of money needed to rent a one bedroom apartment in New York city I realized just how good things are over here. Sure it's not safe but the crime and corruption won't last forever.
New York is expensive. Even Americans complain. Also it is not well maintained, roach infested and a drug and homelessness problem, the crime has sky rocketed, it is not safe. Try finding a surburb somewhere else, much more affordable than living in the city.
Struggling with rent, and being priced out of the property market. People end up doing things they never thought they would do in Africa, like working in fast food restaurants and uber on top of their normal job.... to me that's the worst quality of life, didn't come here to slave away my life for peanuts. Would choose Africa any day. Most times people just stay there so that they can tell people they have relocated to a developed country, while their quality of life has deteriorated significantly.

Moved to Saskatoon in 1986. Moved to Toronto then Hamilton. Back to SA in 1996. Johannesburg for 20 years, working as a CA in corporate. Back to Toronto 2015. It was tough to get into the job market. Even though I have been a Canadian since 1989, I was still an immigrant with no Canadian experience. Cold called and got a great consulting role in Forensics. Easily earning a top 5% salary. But gave up the opportunity. So had no choice. Moved back to SA in 2019. Except .. to Cape Town. Extremely happy in Cape Town where I work from home as a forensics expert. No shortage of work and I'm highly skilled here. Such a beautiful place. And nothing compares to the warmth of South Africans. Canada is cold and the people are superficially friendly. I have peace of mind though because I'm invested in property in Toronto and Montréal. I'm not stressing out about the state of the country. Back in 2015 Zuma and Nkandla pushed me to divest. Very grateful to have followed my instincts.
Yeah Zuma wanted the economy to be shared and transferred to previously disadvantaged groups like the rest of the African countries that we praise today ie Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. It's good for us to praise those countries but don't want the same thing to happen to SA. SMH
As someone whose parent moved our family overseas and schooled & lived in a foreign country for many years…the grass always seems greener. But South Africa is still top class compared to many of these countries. It is cost effective and we are absolutely spoiled here in SA. Material things will never compare to the warmth and friendliness and the feeling of belonging in South Africa and with your family. I’ve lived in various countries as a single person too and this still stands. Other countries always put their best foot forward but actually being there physically you realize that we have so many incomparable things in South Africa and it’s not as much of a shithole we perceive it to be.

Lived in New Zealand for almost 4 Years , and now started the process of going back to SA. New Zealand is great, way less crime and when it happens it's just petty crime, schools are A bit mediocre when I compare to SA private schools. We left south africa with a plan to come back after a few years and now is the time to go back home. We miss the people, food, culture. Kids can play outside freely but spend too much time indoors because people keep to themselves.....we just can't get used to that
Dont do it just yet, maybe when you’re ready to retire. In winter theres a possibility of stage 10 rolling blackouts, Im sure u left when the worst was stage 4!
@MrEbhartley nothing wrong with that, I think if you wanna go you should do it but don't sell everything yet, you can sell furniture and other small stuff but don't let go of things like property as yet. Go see and experience, and decide later after being in the country for long enough. There's alot of people coming back but some come back with permanent residency and citizenship so that gives people a peace of mind, knowing that if thing had to go wrong in SA, they can just jump on the plane and go back without applying for visa or finding a job first
Lets put things into perspective, you cant just say moving to Canada is this or that - its like saying you moved to Cape Town and all of SA is expensive and beautiful. I moved to Ontario Canada and it was the worst experience - cold weather (you wont see sun for at least 7months unlike some other parts of Canada) , some of the most unfriendly and miserable people I have ever met and just a horrible place to live (note I came from Cape Town and not some little dorpie which may be just as boring as Ontario). I spent some time in Alberta and I tell you what, its beyond beautiful - it really depends where you live and whether you can manage the cold - we have experienced -40C many times. We are busy packing up and leaving for a warmer climate (not back to SA) and I will say I am exceptionally happy to be leaving. Fortunately I call a spade a spade, whereas some people will try and convince themselves they made a better choice to move. Dont get me wrong, some people are happy in Canada, but ive met many who arent , even Canadians.
In Alberta , Canada food is expensive it there are cheaper places you could go to . In SA food is also expensive but they say Ontario is the most cheapest city in Canada .

Depends on what you value as "luxuries". Having a safe environment for your children is a luxury in South Africa. Having reliable water and electricity is a luxury in South Africa. So yes, there are compromises, but, it depends on what you value. Banking in SA is more advanced than most countries, food is relatively cheap and VERY high quality in South Africa, consumers are well protected in SA in terms of purchases AND the climate/natural beauty is amazing. The ONLY bad part of South Africa is crime. (corruption is a crime)

Let's be honest the average White South African lives a above average lifestyle in south africa from more exclusive suburbs jobs higher salaries private education to the average black brown south african. Maybe for those going over to Canada would always be seen as safety issues reverse racism issues jobs and security for there kids future. South Africa (our rainbow 🌈 nation) could be the greatest and most the powerful country. However, it’s tough to see the light when you have two master’s degrees, jobless and relying on your mom. Due to the corrupt leaders with no vision and it’s domino effect on society there is just no progress. Skilled people are leaving and the brain drain will continue. It’s truly unfortunate.
Your experience is so similar to mine of the 80s (but with one Masters degree). I told my children the other day that I lived with my parents up and till the age of 27 years. It was so humiliating. And yes, we could all rightly blame the Nazi-apartheid government. It is very disheartening to read that a Black person is experiencing exactly the same now but under the government led by the Freedom fighters. In fact, this hurts me even more deeply than that experienced under apartheid.....the betrayal by these frauds just knows no end.

As someone from the cape flats, having made leaps and bounds in my career and having visited colleagues in these countries the trade off for me really isn't worth it, cost of living is super high, most people rent as property is damn expensive, so i think even with loadshedding and all the crime I'll stick with SA, especially being a conservative person.

I think it comes down to your tolerance for risk (crime, economic prospects etc.) If you're risk prone, then SA is an ideal place to create economic opportunities, have a good lifestyle etc. If you're risk averse, then Cananda ticks a number of boxes in terms of safety, economic stability etc. Either comes at a trade-off, with there being no right answer.

Many first world countries go on and on about climate change and green living....where do they think the problem starts? It's all the heating required for their homes, schools, businesses, shops etc.
90% of Canada's energy comes from renewable/carbon free sources (mainly hydro), so they're probably one of the few 1st world countries that can heat with a clear conscience

Been living in Canada for 15 years. The weather is a big turn off. It’s cold for 7-8 months of the year. If you haven’t experienced -40 weather, consider yourself lucky. The food here is not pleasant and it’s expensive. One thing I don’t like is the bread. Makes me miss good’ol Albany and Sasko. Yes, there’s more opportunities, but housing is expensive. Rent can sometimes exceed your monthly income. You’d actually find better and more affordable housing in gated communities of Joburg. People are very friendly. Not as lively and open as South Africans, but very polite and generous and helpful if you need anything. South Africans I’ve met come here to work or studying, then when winter comes around, they go back home.
Hi Modiehi, I’m not entirely sure about the Law industry in Canada as I’m in engineering. It’s always a good idea to do as much research into Law especially in Canada as possible because it differs vastly to the South African justice system.
Lol being with your family and being happy aren't things that only happen in Canada. You could live in a shack, with no running water or electricity and still be happy when you're surrounded by the ones you love.
Just like they have said, don't compare the lifestyles and just know that in Canada or any European country you will have to work harder than here at home. I have friends in America who work two to three jobs and they can't afford to buy a house so sad
@@cccmmm1234 Yes it is. But it depends on the type of work you do as well. If you're in film or any work that requires you to be on campus then you'll be most likely in an expensive area but bf you work remotely then you can love somewhere cheap.
What this guy said about the schools is true, my 10 y.o. daughter went from curro krugersdorp to a public school in calgary being one term behind when she got there and found it easy and the teacher was very impressed with her work
When we emigrated to Australia my son was put back a year as the Australian government assumed our education was far behind theirs. Well my son was way ahead of his class and his teachers were amazed. My husband too had a high level of experience and education in the electrical field, however he too was valued at a much lower grade and had to redo his electrical certificates , even though he had the knowledge and expertise. South Africas education was much higher than Australia's at that time.

Can we also just mention that in 1st world countries yes rent and house costs are more but intrest is lower so here in the Uk I live in a R5mill house but my mortgage is R13000 a month…but to rent the same house it would be R20k+. As a plumber I earned R15k 8 years ago in South Africa, in the UK I am never making less than £170 a day, some days £500
It looks good on screen, but in reality, you have to work twice as hard there to match the standard of living in SA. Let's not forget that the woke politics there is worse than here, and you will still be an African immigrant. But they will never tell us that. I would rather be well off here than poor there. Emigration is not for everyone. Proceed with caution as many regret. There is a whole movement of Americans moving here for a better standard of living.
Well at lot of times those “good standards of living “ comes at the expense expense of cheap labour. I would rather live somewhere where most of the population get to eat than just the few with a “good standard of living “.
Americans arriving in South Africa with USD mind you. With that taken into consideration its not surprising, nor does it only occur in South Africa. Earning even an average salary in USD, Euros, Pounds etc can get you a great life in underdeveloped countries.
Overall in Canada you just work to pay bills because financially it seems very tough when comparing cost of living with how much you get paid annually. I would then say it's safe to go there with no intention of wanting to stay there for the rest of your life. In all honesty though, every country is different and wanting to compare everything to your home country will always be tricky!
For some people it’s hard to live abroad, because they got so used to cheap labour in RSA. I left RSA years ago, but I never grew up with a housekeeper or so, so for me such things have not been a problem. I don’t personally even know a single person over here who has a housekeeper. You just clean up after yourself. And for those who do have one, it’s a once a week thing not a mon - Friday or a sleep in job.
You don't need a domestic worker in South Africa you can also do the work yourself so what is these people problem off course overseas there is no servants you have to do it yourself I live in South Africa and I never had a domestic worker I do it myself I really think South Africans are spoiled

@@messenger1 Green energy is a clean source of energy such as renewable e.g wind, solar, hydro, hydrogen & nonrenewable nuclear power. So I would say green hydrogen energy is more of the future because you can generate it from water electrolysis with zero emissions. You can store it under high compression underground.
@@alensiwela Thanks. I am not sure that wind, solar and hydro are sufficient to provide a reliable base load. (Wind does not blow constantly, the sun is not always shining, and droughts, etc. decreases the availability of water to generate power.) I am not up to speed with electrolysis, but I understand that electricity is needed to accomplish the process. Do you know whether the output power derived from this process exceeds the input power? Coal, oil and gas (which are renewable) is certainly the best option for consistent base load generation.
@@messenger1 You are absolutely correct, wind & solar only provide a small percentage but to overcome the load I think more of these power sources will be implemented including hydrogen power across the country. That should increase the capacity and meet the demand.
@KJ V Which better education??? I'm in both Basic and Higher education and I would like to differ with you. Our basic education system is very very poor. Our learners are passing because the department of education is giving them free marks and also apply certain criteria to progress them while a learner has failed 3 subjects. Recently, some chapters in Grade7 Mathematics were canceled and will only be included in Grade8. A lot is going wrong in our education system, hence UNW Vice-Chancellor once mentioned this in one of his comments this year and our Minister refuted the statements because she knows the honest truth. 30% pass mark does exist in the form of their progression criteria. Then how can you say our education system is very good. Currently, we are also having primary school kids in intermediate phase who are smoking in the very model-C schools. Wake up and do thorough research before bringing your kids in these nonsense country.
I moved from SA to Canada as an international student. Unlike most South Africans here, I am not highly skilled so it has been tough to find work. I'm working as a waitress and I miss home so much. My family wanted me to come here because we have been victims of crime and the situation in SA seems to get worse every time. I so conflicted on what to do- I love SA but the crime is worrying, and the fact that I struggled to get work both there and here is another concern. But I miss my family and home so much that I just want to be home. I can definitely say the grass is not greener here- there's less crime but so much drug use. I haven't been robbed but I've gotten catcalled repeatedly to the point where I'm sometimes scared to walk alone. I don't mind the winters but because the places I've stayed had little to no heating (very old houses and terrible landlords), it does get tough. If I was in a position where I had a stable job and income, I might not be so conflicted
I've been living in the US for 15 years but now I'm in the process of moving back to SA. I am beginning to appreciate South Africa more now than I ever have in the past. Yes, there's crime and corruption, but SA feels right. I can send my kids to school without ever worrying that they may not come back because some lunatic could just shoot them. I can go to the malls without any fear of getting killed for no reason. I would also argue that true happiness does not really exist in the northern hemisphere. Everyone lives in fear, neighbors don't know each other, you can trust to leave your kids with anyone, and the children are kept inside even when the weather is nice.
@@docdynamix I disagree. I stayed for 3 months last year and all my stress and depression disappeared. There are problems there but it is still better than Europe and North America. Especially in rural areas.
I returned abroad after spending R1000000 on rent for a bedroom not even an ensuite for a space of 5 years in New Zealand,rejected residency they live hand to mouth...live abroad is extremely expensive and there's no financial individual growth money keeps going back to the country...however grateful for the skills and experiences I had...I found small states in the states better to live at we earned fortnightly and paid rent monthly...
Know a few South Africans living in Canada and New Zealand, they seem alot happier and less stressed. South Africa needs to shape up or it's going to lose it best people.
The is nothing special about leaving South Africa for Canada or anywhere else for that matter. What I've noticed is that the white South African population in particular does not like being under a black government and criticizes almost anything it tries to do and some think leaving the country is the best option. When they get to another country for example Australia they live amongst their own little community trying to mimick the life they had in SA instead of adapting to the new settings.
I agree with you but must point out that SA is a failing state and deteriating in all aspects so its natural for educated people to leave for secure prosperous futures. Uneducated wont know if their country is failing anyway and no other country wants them. Its not a race thing at all. People leave countries with corrupt failed governments all the time no matter the ethnic origin of the govenment servants.
Safer, better career opportunities, better schooling, functional government, electricity, service delivery.. lists goes on. And America has absolutely beautiful nature too.

Life has become miserable for Canadians in the last 15 years. Housing has become unaffordable for Canadians who have lived here their entire life. Not necessarily against immigration, but we do not have the infrastructure to house more people. Our labor force is pathetic.
You can see the disappointment on their faces. A lot of people don't realise this but all these countries we dream of emigrating to are only better than SA in terms of safety. That's it, just safety. They arenyhalf as beautiful or interesting. All this country needs is inspired leadership.
I'm actually thinking about going the other way and move to South Africa to retire.. I guess, it depends on which phase of life you're in to make these decisions.. If I had small, children, I think I would raise them in Canada or the U.S.

There is nothing special about relocating. Every country has its own issues. South Africa can still compete with the best nations regardless of loadshedding and crime.
Now, let's tackle loadshedding and crime, add to that an improved education system and more employment opportunities will follow. South Africa will reach it's full potential by delivering a better life for all instead of simply the political elite. Our problems are not unfixable.

I wonder in what areas you think SA competes with the best because if you talk of the world's most livable places, SA doesn't even make the C-list. @A Musimwa Our institutions such as banks and universities are still functioning well and competing with the best. Our government isn't perfect, but show me the perfect government in the world? You should keep in mind a lot of countries under estimate their crime and ommit a lot of variables to look good. I believe in SA and we shall overcome loadshedding and crime.
The 1st 5 years are hard after that you have settled in and worked everything out. You basically can't make a decision on if this was the right or wrong move within the 1st 5 years. It's tough to change countries and is one of the hardest things you will ever do , especially if you have kids. Personally I am glad I did it as the crime is out of control and the corruption in sa is never ending. I personally didn't see a future there that I wanted to be a part of. It's a personal choice and not everyone will see it that way.

If there was not loadshedding in SA i would never have considered immigration. Loadshedding and thinking of all its consequences daily brings one down and makes one very angry DAILY. I have not moved yet, but the plan is to do so this year.

Canada is a good country. The urban planning is a nightmare, which may be a reason I wouldn't move there. I guess for me the hardest part would be not being with South Africans y'know? I don't think I could move to a place that doesn't understand me like that.
What this hasn't done is compared the living conditions of the "average South African" to the average "Canadian". You cannot do a piece of someone in SAPS top 5%, and expect them to relate to life when forming part at the top 50% now. The average person in Canada lives a much better life than the South African who is at the 50% mark, earning a R2000 a month.

The value of the U.S dollar has risen because other countries, including China, invested more in it because of it’s global liquidity. Everything is based on the U.S dollar….gold, diamonds, oil, etc. whatever is priced internationally is priced and based on the U.S dollar. I’m not saying it will be the dominant currency forever, but it certainly will be for the foreseeable future, even China agrees.
My wife and I been living in Canada now for 8 months and I can honestly agree that it is expensive. In South Africa I wasn't earning much and living month to month and now I am earning a lot more money in Canada but still living month to month. The weather is kak in winter but summer and autumn are awesome. Reason for leaving Mzansi was too much damn crime. Been a victim of 3 attempted hijackings, 1 mugging, 2 armed robberies, seen people get stabbed in front of me, had a friend who got shot in the neck. Eventually you say enough is enough. I now have no issues walking with my wife late at night, we don't worry about locking doors, neighbours dogs barking at night doesn't freak me out, seeing kids play in the street unsupervised. Literally ZERO crime where I live now! Its the safety, security and freedom of living that will keep me here.
I do miss South Africa especially the beach, the people, braai's, cultures and the never ending summer but I do not regret my decision when it comes to the quality of life we have here.

I'm sorry to hear about how crime affected you personally here in SA. Our government needs to sort out the issue of crime and our unsafe & porous borders. The issue of safety should be top on their list or else this country will continue to lose our hardworking, peace loving and skilled workers while attracting criminals and terrorists in our country. If they can sort that, it should be easy to deal with documented SAn criminals and illegal ones.
We noticed how our law enforcement was all over the streets during the recent EFF rally aka 😢 'national shut down", if they can do that, why can't they deal with crime and corruption swiftly?

Hey all, I thought I'd add my thoughts too given that I've come from the UK and lived in South Africa for 14 years now. I've lived in Limpopo and now based in the western cape. I love it here. I find people so friendly. The UK is a very unfriendly place - I found my own people cold and un-interested. Here you can sit down next to someone you never met and learn their whole life story then they are gone again. The weather is fantastic here. I'm a teacher (in a private school admittedly) but find school children here far more respectful. My kids get a good education. I've been robbed more in the UK than here. I walk at night in the streets in cape town and don't feel particularly unsafe. There are just areas you avoid. The grass is not greener on the other side - prices are rising everywhere. Everyone is getting squeezed financially!
Cape Town is the best of SA. So you chose wisely.

After reading almost all comments, the whole debate boils down to: What does one prioritize? What trade-offs is one willing to make? How optimistic is one, that the situation at home will get better, or at least not get worse in the next 5 to 10 years? Where is one currently positioned on the economic landscape?
I believe cold weather or expensive housing would not be a deterrent to someone who has suffered a series of violent crimes, or a masters graduate that has been sitting at home for the past five years. At the same time a wealthy person who owns an off-the-grid mansion in a safe estate may not see the need to relocate.

The reality of the situation, even for the wealthy, is the optimism for the future and what are their expectations.
As you said, you can send your child to the most expensive school, get a masters from UCT and yet they're sitting at home becausethey cant get a job or because of the quota system.
What about the fear of crime when shopping or trying to go out with family and friends; the lifestyle aspect of it all... living safely in your gated community isn't ideal and quite isolated.
There is also the case of expats who left in 2013 saying they'll come back to SA 10 years later hoping things would be better... is SA better now than it was 10 years ago... or even 10 years before that or has it been deteriorating in the last 20 years?

After visiting a few countries overseas, i was enough. I realised that South Africa is the best country for me. What those countries did well was to make us fall in love with them through media(TV, Movies, Internet etc), regardless of their shortfalls. I have friends who moved to the US, UK, AUS and they keep telling that it's not what they thought. It's ok to visit and explore the world, but I love South Africa and this is my home sweet home.

I live in the UK. I can say that if you are not doing well financially here, low crime and stable electricity grid, quickly become irrelevant as you are struggling to pay your utility bills and other bills.
If you can't afford to live in a good area, you will be stuck with bad schools if you have kids. Unfortunately the percentage of kids from those schools going to university is low. Therefore struggle to secure good paying jobs later on in life.
They are obviously some benefits living here but if you lived well in SA never take that for granted.
I was going to say that if you have an option to pack your whole life and leave then you’re not doing too badly. Most South Africans don’t have that luxury of just leaving. We have to stay and continue going to ward meetings and continue going to campaign for a better life. It takes all of us to have a passion and investment in making our country better because honestly it is a handful of people who are dividing us and distracting us with petty ideas of race and class. We are all South African and once we put silly differences aside, we’ll realise that more of us that are GOOD. Our country deserves for us to stay, our children deserve a better country. Remove the leaders from power and they will finish each other off. No political party is going to save SA, neither DA, nor EFF, nor ANC, nor IFP, Nor Action SA or anyone who wants to make a career out of empty promises, it is us and only us who can help eAch other.

Running away from a country as opposed to moving towards a country are two different mind sets which create two different approaches. You have to integrate into the way of life of the society you move into - they have different problems. Moving towards a new country allows you to search out the issues those citizens face and then be able to make an informed decision about the cons there and the cons of your originating country.
I agree with you 100% I speak for myself when I say there’s no other country I’d rather live other than Brazil (I’m South African by the way) I’ve visited Brazil 8 times and lived their for two years. My family and friends don’t understand the appeal but what they don’t get is that despite the crime rate, despite all the social and economic challenges…I would choose Rio de Janeiro any day of the week. It’s only once you’ve allowed yourself to be emerged in the culture will one understand.

I was having a conversation with a German couple while my wife and I were on honeymoon and we were talking about South Africa and how we have plans to move to another country and they brought up "is that not disservice to South Africa", instead of fixing the problem people with skills and money run away from the problem (I.e immigrating). And that is so true and I understand that... But when you live in a Country where the Country (Government) does really care about you and the people around you. You kinda do have to stop and sometimes selfishly think about your future and what you want out of this very finite thing we call life.

Moved to Saskatoon in 1986. Moved to Toronto then Hamilton. Back to SA in 1996. Johannesburg for 20 years, working as a CA in corporate. Back to Toronto 2015. It was tough to get into the job market. Even though I have been a Canadian since 1989, I was still an immigrant with no Canadian experience. Cold called and got a great consulting role in Forensics. Easily earning a top 5% salary. But gave up the opportunity. So had no choice. Moved back to SA in 2019. Except
.. to Cape Town. Extremely happy in Cape Town where I work from home as a forensics expert. No shortage of work and I'm highly skilled here. Such a beautiful place. And nothing compares to the warmth of South Africans. Canada is cold and the people are superficially friendly. I have peace of mind though because I'm invested in property in Toronto and Montréal. I'm not stressing out about the state of the country. Back in 2015 Zuma and Nkandla pushed me to divest. Very grateful to have followed my instincts.
Yeah Zuma wanted the economy to be shared and transferred to previously disadvantaged groups like the rest of the African countries that we praise today ie Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. It's good for us to praise those countries but don't want the same thing to happen to SA. SMH

As someone whose parent moved our family overseas and schooled & lived in a foreign country for many years…the grass always seems greener. But South Africa is still top class compared to many of these countries. It is cost effective and we are absolutely spoiled here in SA. Material things will never compare to the warmth and friendliness and the feeling of belonging in South Africa and with your family. I’ve lived in various countries as a single person too and this still stands.
Other countries always put their best foot forward but actually being there physically you realize that we have so many incomparable things in South Africa and it’s not as much of a shithole we perceive it to be.

Lived in New Zealand for almost 4 Years , and now started the process of going back to SA. New Zealand is great, way less crime and when it happens it's just petty crime, schools are A bit mediocre when I compare to SA private schools. We left south africa with a plan to come back after a few years and now is the time to go back home. We miss the people, food, culture. Kids can play outside freely but spend too much time indoors because people keep to themselves.....we just can't get used to that

@MrEbhartley nothing wrong with that, I think if you wanna go you should do it but don't sell everything yet, you can sell furniture and other small stuff but don't let go of things like property as yet. Go see and experience, and decide later after being in the country for long enough. There's alot of people coming back but some come back with permanent residency and citizenship so that gives people a peace of mind, knowing that if thing had to go wrong in SA, they can just jump on the plane and go back without applying for visa or finding a job first
Lets put things into perspective, you cant just say moving to Canada is this or that - its like saying you moved to Cape Town and all of SA is expensive and beautiful. I moved to Ontario Canada and it was the worst experience - cold weather (you wont see sun for at least 7months unlike some other parts of Canada) , some of the most unfriendly and miserable people I have ever met and just a horrible place to live (note I came from Cape Town and not some little dorpie which may be just as boring as Ontario). I spent some time in Alberta and I tell you what, its beyond beautiful - it really depends where you live and whether you can manage the cold - we have experienced -40C many times. We are busy packing up and leaving for a warmer climate (not back to SA) and I will say I am exceptionally happy to be leaving. Fortunately I call a spade a spade, whereas some people will try and convince themselves they made a better choice to move. Dont get me wrong, some people are happy in Canada, but ive met many who arent , even Canadians.

Depends on what you value as "luxuries". Having a safe environment for your children is a luxury in South Africa. Having reliable water and electricity is a luxury in South Africa. So yes, there are compromises, but, it depends on what you value.
Banking in SA is more advanced than most countries, food is relatively cheap and VERY high quality in South Africa, consumers are well protected in SA in terms of purchases AND the climate/natural beauty is amazing.

I lived in Canada in the 90s from North York to Downtown Eglinton and Bathurst. The biggest issue is family for Expats,lucky I had family from Aunts to Cousins.

Your experience is so similar to mine of the 80s (but with one Masters degree). I told my children the other day that I lived with my parents up and till the age of 27 years. It was so humiliating. And yes, we could all rightly blame the Nazi-apartheid government. It is very disheartening to read that a Black person is experiencing exactly the same now but under the government led by the Freedom fighters. As someone from the cape flats, having made leaps and bounds in my career and having visited colleagues in these countries the trade off for me really isn't worth it, cost of living is super high, most people rent as property is damn expensive, so i think even with loadshedding and all the crime I'll stick with SA, especially being a conservative person.

I think it comes down to your tolerance for risk (crime, economic prospects etc.) If you're risk prone, then SA is an ideal place to create economic opportunities, have a good lifestyle etc. If you're risk averse, then Cananda ticks a number of boxes in terms of safety, economic stability etc.

Yes, there’s more opportunities, but housing is expensive. Rent can sometimes exceed your monthly income. You’d actually find better and more affordable housing in gated communities of Joburg.
People are very friendly. Not as lively and open as South Africans, but very polite and generous and helpful if you need anything.

Hi Modiehi, I’m not entirely sure about the Law industry in Canada as I’m in engineering. It’s always a good idea to do as much research into Law especially in Canada as possible because it differs vastly to the South African justice system.

When we emigrated to Australia my son was put back a year as the Australian government assumed our education was far behind theirs. Well my son was way ahead of his class and his teachers were amazed. My husband too had a high level of experience and education in the electrical field, however he too was valued at a much lower grade and had to redo his electrical certificates , even though he had the knowledge and expertise. South Africas education was much higher than Australia's at that time.

Can we also just mention that in 1st world countries yes rent and house costs are more but intrest is lower so here in the Uk I live in a R5mill house but my mortgage is R13000 a month…but to rent the same house it would be R20k+. Well at lot of times those “good standards of living “ comes at the expense expense of cheap labour. I would rather live somewhere where most of the population get to eat than just the few with a “good standard of living “.
Americans arriving in South Africa with USD mind you. With that taken into consideration its not surprising, nor does it only occur in South Africa. Earning even an average salary in USD, Euros, Pounds etc can get you a great life in underdeveloped countries.
Overall in Canada you just work to pay bills because financially it seems very tough when comparing cost of living with how much you get paid annually. I would then say it's safe to go there with no intention of wanting to stay there for the rest of your life. In all honesty though, every country is different and wanting to compare everything to your home country will always be tricky!
For some people it’s hard to live abroad, because they got so used to cheap labour in RSA. I left RSA years ago, but I never grew up with a housekeeper or so, so for me such things have not been a problem. I don’t personally even know a single person over here who has a housekeeper. You just clean up after yourself. And for those who do have one, it’s a once a week thing not a mon - Friday or a sleep in job.
You can see by their old fashioned kitchen finishes that life is no where near better that side

So I would say green hydrogen energy is more of the future because you can generate it from water electrolysis with zero emissions. You can store it under high compression underground.

Coal, oil and gas (which are renewable) is certainly the best option for consistent base load generation.

Our learners are passing because the department of education is giving them free marks and also apply certain criteria to progress them while a learner has failed 3 subjects. Recently, some chapters in Grade7 Mathematics were canceled and will only be included in Grade8. A lot is going wrong in our education system, hence UNW Vice-Chancellor once mentioned this in one of his comments this year and our Minister refuted the statements because she knows the honest truth. 30% pass mark does exist in the form of their progression criteria. Then how can you say our education system is very good. Currently, we are also having primary school kids in intermediate phase who are smoking in the very model-C schools. Wake up and do thorough research before bringing your kids in these nonsense country.
I moved from SA to Canada as an international student. Unlike most South Africans here, I am not highly skilled so it has been tough to find work. I'm working as a waitress and I miss home so much. My family wanted me to come here because we have been victims of crime and the situation in SA seems to get worse every time. I so conflicted on what to do- I love SA but the crime is worrying, and the fact that I struggled to get work both there and here is another concern. But I miss my family and home so much that I just want to be home. I can definitely say the grass is not greener here- there's less crime but so much drug use. I haven't been robbed but I've gotten catcalled repeatedly to the point where I'm sometimes scared to walk alone. I don't mind the winters but because the places I've stayed had little to no heating (very old houses and terrible landlords), it does get tough. If I was in a position where I had a stable job and income, I might not be so conflicted
I've been living in the US for 15 years but now I'm in the process of moving back to SA. I am beginning to appreciate South Africa more now than I ever have in the past. Yes, there's crime and corruption, but SA feels right. I can send my kids to school without ever worrying that they may not come back because some lunatic could just shoot them. I can go to the malls without any fear of getting killed for no reason. I would also argue that true happiness does not really exist in the northern hemisphere. Everyone lives in fear, neighbors don't know each other, you can trust to leave your kids with anyone, and the children are kept inside even when the weather is nice.

Know a few South Africans living in Canada and New Zealand, they seem alot happier and less stressed. South Africa needs to shape up or it's going to lose it best people.
The is nothing special about leaving South Africa for Canada or anywhere else for that matter. What I've noticed is that the white South African population in particular does not like being under a black government and criticizes almost anything it tries to do and some think leaving the country is the best option. When they get to another country for example Australia they live amongst their own little community trying to mimick the life they had in SA instead of adapting to the new settings.

I agree with you but must point out that SA is a failing state and deteriating in all aspects so its natural for educated people to leave for secure prosperous futures. Uneducated wont know if their country is failing anyway and no other country wants them. Its not a race thing at all. People leave countries with corrupt failed governments all the time no matter the ethnic origin of the govenment servants.
Safer, better career opportunities, better schooling, functional government, electricity, service delivery.. lists goes on. And America has absolutely beautiful nature too.
Am currently in Japan not here to stay but one thing I have learnt that nothing beats SA the only problem we have is crime n unemployment but the life in SA is way better.

Life has become miserable for Canadians in the last 15 years.
Housing has become unaffordable for Canadians who have lived here their entire life.

You can see the disappointment on their faces. A lot of people don't realise this but all these countries we dream of emigrating to are only better than SA in terms of safety. That's it, just safety. They arenyhalf as beautiful or interesting. All this country needs is inspired leadership.

I'm actually thinking about going the other way and move to South Africa to retire.. I guess, it depends on which phase of life you're in to make these decisions.. If I had small, children, I think I would raise them in Canada or the U.S.
Just be aware that as you get older you become an easier crime target and need more medical care.

There is nothing special about relocating. Every country has its own issues. South Africa can still compete with the best nations regardless of loadshedding and crime.
I have travelled to 16 countries. Azania is the best.
Now, let's tackle loadshedding and crime, add to that an improved education system and more employment opportunities will follow. South Africa will reach it's full potential by delivering a better life for all instead of simply the political elite.

Load shedding and crime are BIG factors my bro and unfortunately also not the only issues SA is grappling with. I wonder in what areas you think SA competes with the best because if you talk of the world's most livable places, SA doesn't even make the C-list. Your perception is probably based on the fact that it's home and yes home is always best irrespective of any challenges being faced but to say it competes with the best, it is an arguable statement.

@A Musimwa Our institutions such as banks and universities are still functioning well and competing with the best. Our government isn't perfect, but show me the perfect government in the world? You should keep in mind a lot of countries under estimate their crime and ommit a lot of variables to look good. I believe in SA and we shall overcome loadshedding and crime.
The 1st 5 years are hard after that you have settled in and worked everything out. You basically can't make a decision on if this was the right or wrong move within the 1st 5 years. It's tough to change countries and is one of the hardest things you will ever do , especially if you have kids. Personally I am glad I did it as the crime is out of control and the corruption in sa is never ending. I personally didn't see a future there that I wanted to be a part of. It's a personal choice and not everyone will see it that way.

If there was not loadshedding in SA i would never have considered immigration. Loadshedding and thinking of all its consequences daily brings one down and makes one very angry DAILY. I have not moved yet, but the plan is to do so this year.

Loadshedding and its impact does not go away if I get solar. It has daily devastating effects on the economy that you cannot just hide away from by getting solar. This my issue.

It’s not … you might have got rid of some problems but gained more in other ways. It just comes down to what you can live with in the end.
What this hasn't done is compared the living conditions of the "average South African" to the average "Canadian". You cannot do a piece of someone in SAPS top 5%, and expect them to relate to life when forming part at the top 50% now. The average person in Canada lives a much better life than the South African who is at the 50% mark, earning a R2000 a month.
An average SAn does not earn R2000, that's way poor even in SA standards.

The value of the U.S dollar has risen because other countries, including China, invested more in it because of it’s global liquidity. Everything is based on the U.S dollar….gold, diamonds, oil, etc. whatever is priced internationally is priced and based on the U.S dollar. I’m not saying it will be the dominant currency forever, but it certainly will be for the foreseeable future, even China agrees.
