- I'm racing a deadline to get Goldie, my C6 Z06 back on the road before the anniversary of losing her original LS7 due to a dropped exhaust valve (I should have gotten the heads fixed). I built the new LS7 myself starting with a Katech short block and now it's time for a new clutch and some fancy motor mounts.
Love the humility and willingness to tackle this project. Wish more folks would be more open and vulnerable while on CZcams. Keeping it real. Enjoy the journey. Thanks for sharing.
I love that you show the struggles along the way. Anyone who's ever wrenched on their own stuff knows exactly what you're going through, and at the end of the day, all you can do is laugh it off and press on.
Thanks buddy! I would rather try to show it as it really happened than sugarcoat it and make it look like I had an easy time. Hopefully this approach inspires other people to get out of their comfort zone a little bit and try things that seem beyond their ability.
Josh the level of thought and quality that goes into your videos is unmatched. Your approach to YT videos is pretty unique and I always find myself having a blast watching them. Keep doing you man!!

It didn’t really make it into the video but there are two sets of motor mount holes in the front cradle for some reason. Instead of looking up the one to use, Bobby was like, “let’s just measure it, then we’ll know for sure.” You can see it during the motor mount section.
😂 the description of the convoluted way you have to like a video on a TV got me good. LOL

Having recently done this job (Texas Speed shortblock w/ PRC heads), I was waiting for when you would find out what a PITA the slave cylinder is. Here's a tip: connect the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder to the clutch master cylinder before you put the engine in the car. I am loving this series!
I stuck my hand up between the bell housing and the chassis and installed a Katech remote bleeder on my ZR1 without removing anything. Used a friends lift. 9 mm wrench and lots of swear words. Everything about this chassis doesn’t seem well thought out.
Being an older dumbass myself, I can appreciate watching a couple wrench on a vette. Don’t forget your Compuware decals.

I try not to fixate on subs too much. The way CZcams works these days they try to let the algorithm suggest videos you'll like on your home page and the subscription feed is kind of buried. That said, someday I would really love to get one of those plaques they give out. Only 92,228 to go!

im 5 corvettes in and even to this day my yellow C6 is my favorite from rebuilding the entire thing thanks to that legendary valve drop. That got me in touch with Vengeance Racing and from there every corvette that was over 500hp went to their shop thanks to the hope and pray rebuild adventure i went on like a car fiend lol. But makes me feel nice using all the shortcuts on my c7z and c8z lol.
Unless you want to intentionally go through a huge struggle for the sake of learning / proving something to yourself… leaving it to the professionals is the right move!

Highly recommend using HNBR o-rings where possible, they tend to last longer, and swell rather than contract like traditional NBR o-rings. They're often green, but come in different colors.
I see the mount install, but I use factory rubber mounts with polyeurethane inserts inside them. They work wonderfully, with no shake at idle, and no movement of the shifter while moving (FWD transaxle mount included).
Great videos. Nice clutch. I think I need one for my project. $$$.
Seems like Monster makes a good product. We also called them a couple times with questions and they were very responsive and helpful.

Love the way you’ve portrayed everything with the build so far. One thing I would like to pass onto you from my build with my 416 stroker LS3 is the crank position sensor. I’ve had issues with them going out as I’m on my third one within 6,000 miles of my build. Long story short, put a new AC Delco crank position sensor so you don’t get any codes after you get the car put together.

You don't have to drop the rear sub frame on install, Just have to angle it a bit down and go slow.

With its torque tube drivetrain, the stock C6 motor mounts are fine. The engine is not forced to resist rotating about its crankshaft (or trans output shaft) since the engine is directly coupled to the differential. The twisting forces on the motor mounts in a front engine vehicle with a conventional driveshaft are orders of magnitude greather than those on C5-C7 Corvette motor mounts.
I had no idea (obviously), but that makes sense. Appreciate the insight!

Bobby made me do it! Yeah I’d be curious how the mounts would do against a rowdy cam. Probably not any better than factory mounts would be my guess.

You should check lifter preload anyways with an adjustable pushrod, most hydraulic lifters live/perform best at mid
Travel in my experience. So oil soaking its here not there. But cosmoline has iron in it, and won’t provide any lubrication to the lifter bores it’s simply to prevent rust.

Been wanting to buy a c5 z06 for some time, and learn my way around it. Coming from never even having changed a tire. 😅 hopefully next summer. We'll see. My budget is too small to blow up a c6 z06 and live to see another day lol
I loved my C5Z and only sold it because I knew I wasn't a good enough driver to keep up with it so I went to a Miata for a while. I think it's smart to be realistic about your budget.

Why not just get a built LS3? Because... LS7. No further explanation necessary. I ended up with a Monster triple S for half price (fall 2023 Carlisle) so I installed that when I did my Maggie Heartbeat blower install. It's a very nice clutch, stock pedal effort, yery good street manners, and allows for 3rd gear burnouts if desired. The double S would have been plenty for my build, but the universe had different plans for me. That clutch will serve you well Josh.

Here I am looking at a C6 Z, and reading all the BaT sellers saying the valve issue is overhyped. I plan to track my future Z06 3-4 times, so I figure I’m going to proactively take care of the heads before putting any abusive miles on it.
Yeah if I had it to do over again I would obviously take it more seriously and do the head fix first instead of putting it off.
Also keep in mind that the motor was completely stock with 56K miles. And even though I took it to the track several times, I probably did a grand total of maybe 20 laps. So the car isn’t the stereotypical dropped valve case where it’s been ridden hard and put away wet 😁
@@JoshVanVeld I have a 2023 GR86 I’ve tracked about 30 times and it’s wonderful, so the future Z would be a “once every now and then” track car. The running costs on any high hp car are too rich for my blood and I definitely don’t want to drop a valve! FYI, I’ve subbed and whenever I get my Z, I’ll add it to my channel.
I installed that same clutch in my LS3 powered C5. The lightened flywheel caused some issues with the idle, that were caused by the flywheel, requiring some programming changes. Other than that is was much nicer than the stock ZO6 clutch.

You might be able to lay/bungie your headers in place before lowering in the engine, instead of threading them in later. I did that before putting my heads back in place, but the whole engine placement is probably less forgiving.

That's a great tip! Honestly I don't want Goldie to go full track car. Part of the budget GT3 mentality is it needs to be a great street car that can also turn in fast laps on the track. I don't want to ruin for the street, which is a fine line to walk.

One thing you'd probably want to do with that slave cylinder is upgrade the release bearing support to a monster or tick billet one! While everything is out of course. They're knownto melt/get torn up leading to you losing your clutch pedal and needing a flatbed to get the car around 😂
I had Monster install their upgraded one.
