Sometimes when I'm editing I talk myself into cutting stuff like that but I try to leave it in just in case it connects with somebody! Life is full of liminal spaces (physical or temporal) and they can be very unsettling to go through. I think everybody deals with it in one form or another.

@@JoshVanVeld well, i'm glad you keep in a few still! that one with one of your daughters tightening the bolts also really stuck with me, as my own dad is a mechanic and has inspired me to push towards that as a career path, and if nothing else a hobby. i've dealt with it, and live in a constant transitional state in multiple forms, but i always find myself looking back on the fear i had before taking the first steps towards /anything/ as being so much worse than when i actually found the footing, means and motivation to go through with it.

I can promise you a shop would not have put half the care into that engine swap that you did. It will last many years at redline now. @@JoshVanVeld I really do love it! This to me is the best type of story telling as it feels the most genuine. I’m not a big fan of YT videos feeling over edited or like an actual production as that is what YV shows & movies are for. I watch YT to see real stories and exposure to more than what is directly around me. Also to your question about how to videos, I think they are great. By watching many how to videos over the years it has made me more knowledgeable overall, but each vehicle will be slightly unique and this is where the videos can save you time, headaches & money.

Keep up the great work on the car and the storytelling, it's fantastic. Also, you'll know when you graduate from beginner to intermediate mechanic, you'll know what to do instead of being lost or not having a clue, it takes time, especially since you're not a pro technician that does it day in and day out. I've been doing DIY mechanic work for 19 years, and honestly, a pro technician that's been in a shop for only 3 or 4 years has more experience than I do, especially if they're in an independent shop.
Also, when I did my clutch in my E36 328i, I used 4 or 5 one foot long extensions to reach the top 2 or 3 bolts on the bellhousing.
I hope someone that watches this that has a C6 drops and installs the engine from the bottom with the torque tube attached, I imagine that it took at least 2 hours of struggling and adjusting everything.

As far as the question you posited towards the beginning of the video about using guides and such like youtube and at what level is following instructions vs "real" mechanic work I think having those guides to understand the quirks of each job you may be going into is helpful and not necessarily a crutch I think the real skill in mechanics starts coming along when you get into better understanding how to diagnose issues on your own and having the confidence to go at large projects like these and there's never harm in asking for help even the pros get stumped and need help sometimes

Awesome . I'm definitely a tier below a novice mechanic , lol. My older brother, who always loved cars, and was always with my dad working on cars when we were young, grew up to open a big , reputable shop, here in Eastern NC, while I stayed on my bike hanging with my friends, building forts, playing sports, or video games. Now, since he has passed due to covid at the young age of 50, I have become really interested in cars. Well, I've always been interested, just didn't have the drive, or desire. I've started slowly doing things to my cars with help, and learning. Me and my mechanics friend walnut blasted the carbon out of my Genesis coupe 3.8 bk2 at 100k, we replaced the injectors, plugs, coil packs also. I love how to videos. They really just speed up the whole process. Its much smarter to learn from others than to go through the hardship yourself just for the sake of it. We stand on the shoulders of giants and we all continuously add to the tree of knowledge at the branches. Even you.. by uploading these videos :)

I'm a fan of smarter for sure. Funny thing about CZcams - editing the videos makes me rewatch things sometimes dozens of times - the lessons sink in a lot better as a result.

With video learning, do it as much as you want. Once you say. Oh pssh I can do it now (from doing it over and over) that’s when I give it a go without the video.
Just did a new alternator in my 4x4 and am confident in not needing a video. My holes to jump through is limited tools I had to use spanners solely.

I’m 72 and I started wrenching on cars at 15. Long before CZcams and the internet. It’s at better now, less broken parts due to the hidden fasteners and clips and such. I changed out the clutch on my C5 ZO6, using a Monster dual disk clutch, around 2017. Reading up and watching videos helped a lot. I did it by myself, pulled the trans, rear suspension and torque tube and did a lot of cleanup due to the previous owners oil down. I did have a lift, which was great, but still 100% solo. Mine was also yellow and a mostly track car but still fully street legal.

I'm doing a clutch in my c7z time attack car. And the while your in there list has grown! Now a cam, oil pump, lifters, headers, bigger upper pulley to lower boost and new tuning. I started to do it myself as I've d9ne everything else in my 10 years of racing gm cars and 10 years of mustang but I needed a shop for this job cause I need it done asap to make nasa f8nals schedule. I was going to do the monster sc triple but ended up going with mantic triple with with solid hub and cerametallic disk. I'll have 2 tunes and 2 pulleys. Make 645 on lower than stick boost for nasa and 720 to 750 on higher boost for global time and scca tt. Road to finals! Good chance at tt1 win this year. Stiff competition in tt1!! Good job on the car btw.

Holy crap 227 comments in 4 days. Man this channel should have 100k subs! Josh are you going to do any aero, or more track oriented coilovers, slicks setup?

    • @JoshVanVeld
      @JoshVanVeld  Před 3 měsíci +1

At the moment the plan is *maybe* coilovers. No aero, no slicks. I want a clean looking street car that can clean most GT3 clocks at the track. So much of the track part comes down to driver skill.
All that said, I imagine I will find myself wanting to go faster and faster, so I don’t want to say that any plans are set in stone.

first time I always watch a video or get input from someone if available. Helps from breking stuff your first time and also you will know how to do it next time. Just got to be careful with getting the correct info online. when I saw those motor mounts hanging on the motor I knew you were going to have issues getting that motor in.

    • @JoshVanVeld

One of the reasons I love watching these videos is because it gives me a vastly different perspective. I never saw how to CZcams videos as a crutch, but as a requirement so I don't spend forever figuring out where the last bolt is or how to release the odd plastic connector. I can't see myself giving them up, I never liked video games where defeating the boss required some non-intuitive trick (prefer when they make me learn a skill) either.
I also would have chosen the LS3, probably had it professionally swapped, and spent the rest of time bolting on parts to bring it up to LS7 horsepower (probably ending up with a supercharger) and been at the track.
But that isn't necessarily better. This is a different journey, and I commend you for developing yourself as mechanic rather than chasing highs at the track. I'm not sure I could do it.

I built a hybrid for a customer - Texas Speed LS7 short block with PRC LS3 heads. Long story how we came to that. Texas Speed said the LS3 heads would flow less air than LS7 heads but higher compression would equalize the power output. Never got to dyno that engine - part of the long story - but it had a TON of torque!

Airgap being on the lower end results in a high engagement on the clutch pedal. A lot of c6’s are this way. And as the clutch wears and the pressure plate fingers move further reward it only exacerbates this issue. There are remedies but dropping the drivetrain to fix it is harder than pulling the engine. A cheap solution is a clutch pedal stop but it’s really only a band-aid.

You want to be on the upper end of the recommended range. A Tilton slave can accomplish this if you’re not far far below. If you’re far below you’ll have to visit your local machinist and get material removed from the slave.

be very happy you replaced the slave cylinder. its a very common failure point on these cars. I would highly recommend you upgrading to a tick performance clutch master cylinder as well. I ordered a new slave cylinder with the billet release bearing from monster when I ordered the same clutch you have. pain in the butt but certainly worth it since you're tracking your car. these cars love to kill clutch masters and slave cylinders.
