It's so weird to me when people keep comparing an artist's work to their debut album. Now that we understand Fever Ray is a series of characters based on Karin's life, how shitty is it to wish Karin had stayed depressed and lonely just to keep the music darkly ethereal and beautiful? Art is about the artist, not about our personal preferences.

The magic of Fever Ray, for me, is that nearly every time I hear a track for the first time I think....uhhhh.....yikes....and then I can't stop singing it in my head and playing it again and again. It's weird. I've never experienced that with any other artist's music. They are fantastically talented and ground breaking, and honest and refreshing, not to mention badass.

I liked New Utensils too actually, the sound is pretty catchy and varied. Kandy was a disappointment for me as it was repetitive and Karen's deep voice didn't fit well on it, and actually, it was her worst vocal performance on the album I think. None of the songs she released since Plunge are as good as her magnum opus, self-titled.

The "we seduce, then we dance, then we contemplate" pacing of Radical Romantics is one of the star qualities for me that leaves me mulling over the feelings the rest of the album brought out of me. Bummer that Tapping Fingers and Bottom of the Ocean didn't evoke for you what it did for me, because it's been reproducably magical on subsequent listens for me.
Always makes me sad to hear a good critic suggest improvement that I genuinely feel would reduce the impact and quality that struck me like lightning. Regardless, always appreciate melon's artistic engagement and analysis.

I've only listened to a few songs and its tricky. The first album has such a strong place in my heart, each song on that album is a 10/10 and hits some deep emotional notes, especially since I've listened to it for 15 years now. As someone who's 30 and who fell in love with that album as a teenager I can recognize that Carbon Monoxide hits a lot of the same notes and rocks but it doesn't have the same emotional resonance as re-listening to even some of the shitty Seven remixes. At that point I don't know if I'm pessimistic about Radical Romances because her song writing has gotten a bit stale where she used to be so cutting-edge (honestly, has her writing changed since Silent Shout? Her formula is great but she produced a whole noise album, you'd hope that she figured out how to traverse even weirder pop noise waters by now but instead its like she's just walked back to dry land), or if I'm just not gonna fall in love with songs the way I could at 15.
Anyways, and with love and peace, and honestly, has her writing changed since Silent Shout? Her formula is great but she produced a whole noise album, you'd hope that she figured out how to traverse even weirder pop noise waters by now but instead its like she's just walked back to dry land.

It's so crazy how when a subject matter is purely subjective, people often trick themselves into thinking that simply forming a complex opinion is the same as mastery over that subject. So they actually think they can then dictate to others what the experience will be like for them, even though they're mostly way off for an overwhelming majority of people. The gullible idiots then form a little circle, where they pontificate to each other about which Animal Collective album totally banged the hardest.

man that first fever ray album was so huge for me. 7/10 is a super form-your-own-opinion rating lol. haven't listened to it yet.

guys I think Antonio should drop the rating system. though it does telegraphs the measure of satisfaction, it also kinda ruins the point of a review to tell what it's like to listen to this particular piece of music

I liked her last album Plunge because it was so different. High pitched, experimental, radical, undanceable and daring. I like the new album radical romantics too as it is a lot softer, with a lot more harmonies and melodies which is ear pleasing for sure, although I don't think making catchy tunes is Karen's top priority. It's about expressing, exploring and experimenting, musically, artistically, politically, personally...and from this pov I love all her music ❤

Every Fever Ray album has at least one song which really emotionally resonates with me and continuously haunts me through the years. The first one had Keep The Streets Empty and a few others while this one has Shiver, New Utensils & Looking For a Ghost. And Bottom of the Ocean....kindof. And for Plunge, there was the magnificent chilling violin ballad that is Red Trails, which makes me think of the dramatic ending to season 4 of Stranger Things for some reason. *lol*

I always wanted and anticipated this album to be like her debut. Dark, steady reputations like meditation music and majestic beats track by track. Unfortunately, even though there are some bangers on Radical Romantics namely Carbon Dioxide, this album couldn't reach the level of the self-titled. Of course, I do not expect her to drop as best as she did a long time ago. All the post-debut works Karen dropped emphasize that the debut was something else. Triangle Walks, Seven, I'm Not Done, and Keep the Streets Empty for Me, definitely should be given a listen.
