We're going to New York City! This week's vlog is full of NOSTALGIA, at least for me. I lived in New York (Manhattan, and later all over Brooklyn) from age 19-27. I've been back to visit a handful of times, but it's been several years. Some of my closest friends still live there and this was a trip I kept vowing to make for a while but couldn't work up the courage. Thanks for coming with me.

Haha I’m relieved to hear that. I think some people may have taken it very seriously. (I also left out a lot of the exchange with that guy, for editing sake.) but ultimately, all my rants on here are just hyperbolic bits to make myself laugh. Don’t overthink it!❤️
I mean this in the most endearing way possible, but you make me excited about getting older. I’m in my late 20s and I’ve been dreading the big 30 and feeling inadequate or feeling like I haven’t done enough. But the way you carry through so gracefully and you just let life happen without constantly freaking out is so admirable to me personally. You just let me know that there’s so much life left to be lived and it doesn’t have to all be perfect or complete by a certain age. I love that about you!

@@Caroline_Winkler that is a great way to think about it! I think we do get more comfortable with it over time. I suppose because as we get older we just have more experience to draw from. With time I have gotten better at going into problem-solving mode rather than freak-out mode. Anyway keep doing what you’re doing! I’m sure it’s a therapy of sorts for you, and seems like it is for many of us too! Ps: I live in the DC ‘burbs, so I loved seeing the shops in your antiquing video! 😊

Packing lists are underrated. I once went on a trip to San Francisco with my husband and ONLY PACKED PAJAMAS. Forgot to pack clothes 😭 To be fair I was in law school at the time, it was right after finals and I was operating at a mental level of about 35%. But thank God for Old Navy…so yeah, packing lists for all!

I went to the UK in September and forgot socks. Let me tell you women's socks are crappy to buy in London. I finally bought men's socks because I want something warm on my feet.
What you said about listening really made sense. Sometimes I've felt like if I go somewhere, I have to bring the joy or have something exciting to share in order to have added value to whatever is going on. It's tiring. But thinking about the flip side and just listening is interesting. Thanks for another great one!

I’m a 72 y.o. introvert whose batteries die in a social situation after 30 - 90 mins too. Going into listening mode to make them last longer is great advice. Leaving is good advice too. You make an appearance and then you go, like a rainbow! Caroline, you are a like a rainbow to me.
Your message and introspection at the end “landed” perfectly. You are so insightful and not in a preachy, “better than” way. You are able to connect with people who have a permanent seat on the “struggle bus” (it’s me, I’m people) but also provide such an insightful message that we can all relate to. I am 63 and it always shock me that I am grandma age. We don’t have kids, and I always feel 35. Time went by too quickly.
It's Saturday and I'm at work, drinking coffee watching Caroline can't get much better than that. Visiting my favorite city in the whole wide world, NYC, wouldn't want to live there but would love to have access to it (i know that's what you call an "oxy moron" too busy for someone who needs her own space. When you look back a year or two ago did you think you'd be where you are today? You really have come a long way Caroline and I could say, "embrace the change" but as you know that's a scary fact that's hard to envelop. Whether you know it or not you really have grown (probably not taller) but inside and that's such a good thing "little steps." Hopefully we help you because every week you certainly support us who have to take those baby steps through life. It's all about the climb as the song says. See you next week.

I think Caroline got what she needed at that time, in deciding it was time to live alone. When you've only ever lived with others, and also have a tendency to become everyone's satellite, you don't really know who you are, because you've never been who you really are, because you've only ever been *who you are with other people*. Who we are with other people is a version of who we are, sure, but we're our most authentic selves while enjoying our own company.
Watching her blossom in the two years since this vlog is amazing. Sure it hasn't all been great, but life isn't always sunshine and rainbows (more like puppies and kittens sometimes...if you know the reference you know 😉) and that's OK, that's what helps us grow as people. I think what she needed, to find herself, was to find HERSELF, which sometimes you can only really do on your own.
Caroline, I am 75 years old. If you were my granddaughter, I would be so proud of you.

I think I was recommended this channel randomly (I enjoy home decor stuff, minimalism, etc. so clearly the CZcams algorithm has my type pegged) and man, I've just been having an absolute ball with the content you've put out. The vlogs you do are far and away my favorite thing on CZcams right now - there's comedy, real emotions and just a genuine sense of you putting yourself out there and not giving a shit what people think. I've had so many legit laugh out loud moments during an off-handed comment you blurt out. It's definitely a stream of mind diarrhea presented in just the most wonderful, palatable way I've come across. You remind me a bit of the comedian Nikki Glasser, who I think is quite talented so that's a compliment.

A reunion is the experience of revisiting someone, but also revisiting yourself. What a great insight. Having lost my best friend from childhood more than a decade ago i have realized I don't know how many times that I'm the only person who knows who I was on the thousands of experiences we alone shared.

I'm also a talker, unfortunately I have surrounded myself in the last years with people who rather listen than talk and if I don't say anything, we just sit there. I really don't get how that is possible for someone when I have such a need to voice all of my thoughts. But honestly, I just love love loooooove the way you talk about these things, I have such a hard time finding people outside of my country who have an introspective nature, who can talk about stuff deeply and with details that are not just clichés.
The more I am approaching 40, the more I become my grandmother and mother and don't wanna go anywhere, or really have to plan for just one social event every week, although I used to be such an extroverted person.
EDIT: your monologue does not go unnoticed, as the others also wrote. The more I age the less I know where I'm going, was so determined at 18 what I want to do. And when things did not pan out the way I thought, I wasn't sure what to do next. Next year I'm moving to a new country where I barely speak the language and not sure if I'll ever be able to find myself again there, where I will always feel like an outsider, no matter how much I learn the language there.
I just love you. You’re so real and I feel like you’re sharing such growth. Whether you know it or not, you’re an inspiring lady in such a weird media age that we live in. Thank you for being you.

this vlog reminded me of this one term I heard a while back about how sometimes we need to “play the pause” and allow ourselves to enjoy periods of transition. The vibe of NYC is like no other, the good, the bad, and the absolutely amazing. The memories, experiences, and friends made there are cherished and builds your foundation as you go through changes. I had that same social anxiety about social events where I felt I had to be the best most interesting person there or it wasn’t worth it, and solved it with the exact same solution : listening. I would get too caught up in my head and not be present and that would end up as me feeling inadequate.

I’m often wistful about my past lives at old work places, certain friend groups, etc. Then when I revisit them, it’s different and there’s a period of mourning for me that what once was, isn’t anymore. Why am I crying...that caught me right in my feels. I left Australia in 2018 (after living there for years) and returned to Scotland...I haven't been back since (due to covid/mental health/money) and I'm scared that my heart will break all over again when I visit (hopefully in jan 2023) and then have to leave. I've tried so hard to make a new life here but I still feel like I'm missing something. Thank you for your honesty it's endlessly reassuring. 💜
