“Whiskey in the Jar,” a song about a notorious Irish highwayman Patrick Fleming who was hanged in 1650, has become one of Ireland’s most beloved songs, a true rebel air that stirs the passions.
“Whiskey in the Jar” became a hit for Irish performers like The Dubliners and Thin Lizzy and has even been covered by Metallica and Grateful Dead, but its origins aren't as widely known as the tune itself.
Fleming was no hero. He murdered, robbed, and maimed rich and poor alike, including women and children before being hunted down. He made a legendary escape from his death cell by scrambling up a chimney but was eventually recaptured. In death, he acquired a heroic air and many poems were written about him.
    Thanks for your reaction. ❤️👍

Actually, who ever arranges - Layne, Geoff or Eli - also does the full initial edit. Layne has commented that no one can know what you want the way you can. So they take that initial control and then pass it along after they've edited it to their version of "perfect." Layne often chooses to record and use multiple drum tracks. And of course, they're doing and editing the video, so...

This tale is about an Irish highwayman (a thief who steals from travelers) who robs a British military officer (Captain Farrell - not a pharaoh, LOL! ) and is subsequently betrayed by his woman.
To fill the story in a bit, after he robs the captain, he counts out the money and then gives it to his wife and/or lover for safekeeping. She promises that she will never deceive him which proves to be false. As the highwayman slumbers after his exploits, Molly puts water into his gunpowder, rendering his pistol ineffective, and sets him up to be captured. The next morning, as the highwayman ventures out again, he is ambushed by Captain Farrell and his footmen. He tries to shoot at them, but his pistol won’t work due to the wet powder. He reaches for his sabre, but the deceitful Molly has already taken it from him. Rendered defenseless, he is captured and taken prisoner.

Something that might interest you are two of VoicePlay's latest short videos- their Loop series. Basically, you get to watch them put together all the different layers of vocals and drums in a song, as well as how it sounds once they're all put together. It's an interesting look at one process of arrangement (I say one, because it's not exactly how their full-length songs are arranged), and while they don't go into the engineering aspects, it's still a fascinating peek behind the curtain and I suspect you'd appreciate seeing them.

Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, Carry On My Wayward Son, Dream On, Superstition all have Omar. This is an old Irish tune from the 1600s- we have a highwayman, the innkeeper's daughter (who in some versions is in love with the blacksmith). Our singer is a highwayman, lifted the money, took it home to Molly. Capt Farrell came in and was killed. Our singer now in prison, hung in 1650. Whack for the daddio is looking for a refill on the drink. First heard this 60 yrs ago when my Irish great uncle was drinking whiskey at our bar in the house - whack for my daddio from dad. Also heard it from Peter Paul and Mary, The Clancey Brothers, Tommy Makem. The Charismatic Voice interviewed Layne on how he processes the beatboxing. You might enjoy it. Peter Barber also recently interviewed Layne, again, very interesting. Grew up with Phil Oakes who did lots of ballads and political tales.

Layne mixes his drums before it's sent off to Ed, he is very particular with his beats. Enjoyed the reaction, though if you have CC on it's Captain Farrell. I believe Molly ratted him out to Captain Farrell. I'm always looking forward to your next VoicePlay reaction!!

    Re: laying down Layne’s percussion:
Look up “How To Create Vocal Percussion featuring Voiceplay - Full Sail University. That’s a short start. Then look at The Charismatic Voice’s Tea Time interview with Layne Stein. That’s about an hour, but very in depth regarding Layne’s process for laying down and editing his percussion. Both interviews include playing examples and seeing his editing software.
I will tell you one thing - I don’t think you’ll ever get a library of sounds from Layne. He was asked if he has sounds stocked that he can add in, and he emphatically said no. He always wants the sound to be perfect for that location in that piece of music, so nothing is kept from one session to another.
Even though the person that does the arranging for a number does all but the final edit (which is always done by Ed Boyer), Layne does considerable editing on his percussion tracks before he sends them to Geoff or Eli for mixing with the rest of the group.
One other thing. Layne knows how much we love to hear him sing. So most of his arrangements recently have him singing at least one featured line. But when Geoff arranges, he rarely has Layne sing, and if he does it’s not featured. He’s just buried in the harmonies. Which is why you didn’t hear anything but group singing from Layne in this one.

      @hollyryalsgrubb1273 Před 7 měsíci

Although Geoff does feature Layne singing in the less percussive songs such as I Can't Make You Love Me (which is a less featured song but one of my favorites)

Great reaction. It's always a treat to listen and watch you. There is a lot of history in this song, all the way back to 1650.

Hi guys! One of the reasons that some commenters have mentioned that their lyrics seem clearer, might be due to the fact that most (if not all of them) have worked in various Florida theme parks in their early days, so they were used to making the lyrics as clear as possible? Whoever does the arrangement generally does the initial mix (as well as the video edit), then it gets sent to Ed Boyer to work his magic (he mixes for many of the acapella groups including PTX and Home Free), then they shoot the video, generally singing along to the final audio mix rather than lipsyncing, to make it look more authentic (you can see Geoff's larynx move, etc.)..! I only knew the Thin Lizzy version from the 70's - but I like this version too!

It is so amazing that VP covered this, as in the other versions the instruments play a huge part of the song. Thin Lizzy, was a hard rock band from Dublin. Phil Lynott co-founder and amazing bassist. I have noticed that really good a cappella groups make certain to clearly enunciate the words. Home Free and Voiceplay are really good at that. Bass singers especially have to be careful with completely saying words correctly. The low notes tend to muddle the words.

One of my grandma's favorite songs. There are so many different lyrics, especially as it crossed the pond to America. In some she's Jenny, in some Molly. In some he kills Captain Farrell, in some Jenny/Molly fills his bullets with water. In some he's stuck in prison, in some he beats up the guards and breaks out. It all depended on how much you love the highwayman and want him to have a happy ending and revenge.

I was told that there are special meanings for some of their lyrics. "Whiskey in the jar" - probably a bottle of whiskey with some still in it. "Whack fol the daddy o" - was said to reference pouring more into his cup (of that whiskey). Like, maybe, one for the road? It's Irish, so, one would have to go back to the 1600s for the vocabulary of the time. I also thought that he was in a type of bar that might have housed women of the night upstairs in separate "chambers". As coincidence had it, they both fancied the same woman. I actually don't know. But, it could make sense.

I love when VoicePlay covers storytelling songs. Their arrangements and harmonies tend towards storytelling anyway, so it always comes out strong.
I think the response to Oliver Anthony is proof of the lack of political lyrics in our music nowadays. We used to resonate with songs like that across genres but it's just not out there the way it used to be.
If I had to buy a house today I'd end up crying often and listening to sad songs a lot, lol. I wish you all the luck with that shitshow, my friend! ❤

There are several variations of this but Molly, Jenny or whichever name they use at any given time betrays the highwayman to the authorities (British Army) some think of Capt Farrell as a generic army tax collector from around 1650
