A friend told me the other day that this song was written as the Banshees attempt at a Christmas record - hence the line ‘In Israel they sing happy Noel.’ I love the idea of a Gothic Christmas record and it has to be best Christmas record ever? I have listened to it for more than 40 years and never realised
Glad you liked it Alex. This is my favourite Siouxsie song and I have been a massive fan of theirs since their first record. Love the haunting bass from Steve Severin and atmospheric guitar riff by the great John McGeoch and great drumming from Peter Clarke ( Budgie) ..the song has a fantastic , almost danceable groove , and one of Siouxsie's more memorable vocals.
My N°1 Siouxsie And The Banshees song, just perfect, and the live version in Nocturne is incredible
That crowd was going nuts to this song, for sure
was actually listening to Siouxsie and the banshees yesterday! you psychic you! Juju is amazing... Christine, happy house etc
Kaleidoscope, Juju, and Dreamhouse are well overdue -- good news it's on the list. That window of Siouxie is hard to match by any of their peers.
Juju is way above others. And The Scream.
Love her completely original and never bettered
I just now saw that you're a musician. I listened to a few tracks on bandcamp and it reminds me almost of a Daniel Lanois or Brian Eno feel. Good stuff.
Definitely add Tinderbox to the list, especially based on your comments about the production and how you like the more atmospheric stuff.
I also don't think you would enjoy the scream very much, its definitely more on their early raw punk sound
That was actually quite good. Very interesting composition.
Punk broke out in 77 and Siouxsie's first release was in 78 and for them to have "that post punk sound" is because they were part of the initial foundation of it.
Israel is still way up there for me. It never gets old.
Definitely check out Hyaena! Still my favorite from them! 🖤
Love Swimming Horses
Listened to this back in 80s on Walkman tape doing my paper round. Fantastic!
I loved this song when it was released. Now 40ish years later, I've been playing it again almost daily for the past 3 months. Something about it really resonates with me at this point in time. Did you know it's a Christmas song?
listen to their discography their best albums are juju, tinderbox, and peepshow
Peepshow is often overlooked, its my favourite of their albums
Totally agree, those are the 3 best SATB albums imo, although others are worth the listen and are also great.
Cities in Dust is another great song by them you should check out if you haven't yet.
This & Night Shift are my favourite S&tB songs. I wasn’t as keen on their poppy songs.
Classic!
Mcgeoch lives
Great reaction, again! I'd recommend Hyaena over The Scream btw
A Kiss in the Dreamhouse
I don't really like the production on Kaleidoscope. Israel is better than most of the tracks there.
I agree, Happy House and Israel were clear signs of what was to come imo
Hope you're feeling better. Have you heard of "Romeo Void"? Check out "Never say Never".
It's a classic
Alex, congrats on the real estate photography venture, first of all. Here's to paying the bills and doing something you enjoy!
My hunch (I can always be wrong, and often am) is that you'll like Tinderbox and Peepshow the most by this band. I do think that those albums are just a bit more polished and focused by the mid-late 80's. Much like the Cure or some of their other contemporaries, I do think it's fun to hear the evolution of this band over the years.
It's interesting- no matter who ended up playing guitar for this band, there are just a lot of sharp, shimmery guitar tones in their music. Bass and drums are very present, but no Hooky style lead bass, if that makes sense.
Probably repeating what you know but also Robert Smith of the Cure also being Banshees guitarist 82-84 so no wonder some similarities 😊
Did he say Sushi and the Bandits?
RYM user!!!
You’re pronouncing her name incorrectly : SUSIE is the correct pronunciation
This album was more synthy but it's prettY good. Dreamhouse is good.
Devastating lyrics if you understand them
Are you american.... Mr.Alex ?
Their live album Nocturne has a better version of this song IMHO
I feel it fits with israel's aggression on palestine
