  • In this video we're listening to Siouxsie And The Banshees. We'd heard maybe one song from this band, when we were young, yet we never went looking for more. Now is the time, and we're eager to learn about this band for real. Enjoy!

Siouxsie And The Banshees had their first hit before Kate Bush.
They were associated with several other acts - Sid Vicious was briefly in the band and Siouxsie appeared with the Sex Pistols during their infamous Grundy interview; also Robert Smith of The Cure has featured for the Banshees at various times.

Hi again. Good choice of Siouxsie and the Banshees. I'm pretty sure Siouxsie wasn't really influenced by Kate Bush. I had several chances to hang out with Siouxsie and her ex-husband, their drummer Budgie, when they were doing what started as a side project called The Creatures. Siouxsie and the Banshees bassist, Steve Severin were members of what was called The Bromley Contingent, which were famous groupies of The Sex Pistols. Their 1st performance was with The Sex Pistols no real musical talent bassist, Sid Vicious, who played drums only once as a Banshee. That 1st show also had Adam Ants most famous guitarist, Marco. This line up of Siouxsie and the Banshees (Siouxsie, Steve, John McGeoch, and Budgie) are considered by almost all Banshees fans, and Siouxsie herself to be the best line up they ever had.

Glad you liked it, there's a lot more, they did a load of stuff.....i suspect the one you know is probably, Kiss Them For Me. Their biggest hit in the states.
Massively influential for a band that rarely bothered the charts or had much in the way of public consciousness, Shirley Manson of Garbage has said she would never have sang without Siouxsie, Viv Albertine formed The Slits after witnessing Siouxsie's first gig, Johnny Marr still talks about Banshees guitarist, John McGeogh with absolute reverence, Porno For Pyros, LCD Soundsystem, the list is endless.
And one of the few Post Punk bands ,in the UK at least, to be fronted and controlled by a woman. The Banshees was her band, she made the decisions.

  • @KillerBl8

Fabulous 🙂 My favourite Siouxsie and the Banshees track. Saw them on the tour when this was out and they were magnificent.
This was the best line-up of the band with Budgie and John McGeoch who brought this amazing guitar sound from Magazine with him. John was one of the most influential of the post punk guitarists and that playing plus Budgie's wonderful drumming brought a much fuller sound.
No Kate Bush influence - Wuthering Heights (1978), Hong Kong Garden (1978). She was a member of the Bromley Contingent, Sex Pistols fans, and was on the TV show where a drunk Bill Grundy made lewd remarks to her, Steve Jones swore on early evening TV and Bill Grundy got sacked.
    czcams.com/video/8XGe_hncsiM/video.html
Siouxsie is 100% original and one of the most influential singers in British popular music.
This band was formed, at the genesis of punk, in the 100 club in 1976 with Siouxsie, Steve Severin on bass, Marco Perroni (later Adam and the Ants) on guitar and Sid Vicious on drums! John McKay (after unsuccessful Peter Fenton) and John Morris took over on guitar and drums and they became successful with two fantastic albums. Those two disappeared in a taxi and Robert Smith, of The Cure, had to step in as did Budgie from The Slits. Smiffy went back to The Cure and Gothic megastardom at the end of the tour so they stole John McGeoch from Howard Devoto's Magazine. The line-up on Spellbound was just the best.
Siouxsie and Budgie became and item and had a successful side project called The Creatures - also worth a listen, especially 'Miss The Girl' and 'Mad Eyed Screamer'

Considering the timeline, perhaps 18 year old Kate was listening to Siouxsie and had her music influenced by that.

    • @KillerBl8
      @KillerBl8 Před 9 měsíci +1

@@hanierfamily I don't think so - Kate was a one off as well and equally influential. She was the first woman singer to write her own UK No.1 and that was before 'Hong Kong Garden' was released. She was pretty amazing and was recording demos with Dave Gilmour at 16. I think the similarity in styles is coincidental and I wouldn't want to claim either influenced the other. They are both a bit art-schooly (although neither went to art school) but Kate was writing songs at a young age and learned to dance, Siouxsie was more of a rebel. So one came at it from a Prog Rock angle and the other from Punk. They are only a year different in age.
I think they are two brilliant, ceative and individual artists that trod their own paths.

On the eve of that tour where The Cure were the support act, the guitarist and drummer left The Banshees jeopardising the whole thing.
Robert Smith stepped up and learned the Banshees set in a trice, he then performed twice each night as The Cure remained as support.
Siouxsie was that impressed Smith was persuaded to carry on playing with The Banshees after the tour ended, it was rumoured that Robert may join full time.
Smith dispelled this by writing and releasing the Cure single Jumping someone else's train.

For me Juju and the Kiss in the Dreamhouse were the pinnacle of thier work. John McGeoch was a genius guitarist on these albums and complemented Siouxsie, Severin and Budgie. Juju has to be listened all the way through as a concept album of wonderful dark music . Siouxsie hated the Goth tag but was the reason why all Goth girls wear the full makeup and black dresses etc . You are incorrect in your appraisal. The debut albums from both SATB and Kate Bush were released in 1978. They were contemporary, boundary-pushing artists that drew inspiration from a common well of influences (at times). Certainly they would have been aware of each other, but both were too much into their own vision to have been directly influenced by the other. For those that get the reference, Kate Bush plays Hammer to SATB's Amicus. (I guess I could have said AIP in regard to SATB, but then that ain't very British, now is it?)
