  • Bluthner grand pianos from about 1880 to 1919 have their unique "Bluthner patent" action which is smoother than the normal repetition lever action but doesn't repeat as well.

Thank you so very much for showing these two instruments off, Marcus. I totally agree that the Bluthner's patent action is unique indeed - there's no piano not endowed with it whose touch feels as intuitive and velvety. The difference in repetition may matter to some a big deal; but I'm not in that league by far. The singing sonorous tone of these 100+ year old marvels sounds next to incredible.

Key Dip on these actions is to be set at 9mm, not 10 or 10.5, or anything else. It does not have the sensation commonly referred as an "aftertouch", as there is no roller and thus no bump at the end of the key stroke. Don't make mistake to adjusting the dip to 10 mm. Bluthner action which is what this is, will not function correctly at dip more than 9 mm. Increasing dip on these will not increase power.

Hello Robert, thank you very much for your fantastic videos, showing so many details of your wonderful pianos. You are stating that a Model 6 without Aliquot stringing actually is a Model 7. Do you know this for sure and does it apply to all models? Is a Model 4 without Aliquot stringing a Model 5 then?

Hello, thank you for your kind words, and pointing out the error here, which I've corrected. It's actually a style VIII as it's 6ft 3in long and Aliquot. Style VII is the same length non-Aliquot, Style V 5ft 9in non Aliquot and VI Aliquot. after 1926 Bluthner dispensed with their patent action and made a lever action of the same style as other makes. The Style IV was 4ft 11in and Style IVa 5ft 5in. These were made up to about 1940. All a bit complicated; hope it's understandable. Marcus

Wow. Harrods put their plaque on wonky. That's terrible.
