  • Spectacular coloratura singing of the famous "Shadow song" (Ombre légère) by Giacomo Meyerbeer, in which Dinorah sings to and dances with her shadow. From the French comic opera "Dinorah" (Le pardon de Ploërmel), sung in French.

Today's date 162 years back, Dinorah was produced in Paris. Can't believe you had Hallstein's recording of Ombre légère! What a rare mesmerizing glittering beauty!

She also sang it in German and performed the French version in a special TV program.

Many thanks for all your comments! Glad you are enjoying these wonderful videos and recordings. Many have praised Hallstein's perfect German diction, and now you tell me that her French pronunciation is impeccable as well. That's impressive! She did not record many songs in French, however. She sang Offenbach, Delibes, and "Je suis Titania" in German. In fact, as far as I remember right now, this is the only song she sang completely in French, and I also have a recording of her singing this song in German. There is one song which she sang partly in German and partly in French: Parlez-moi d'amour.

She has a natural advantage she employs in singing in French. In classical French singing the "r" is rolled as opposed to from the back of the throat as in modern singing. Hallstein rolls her r's as a true Bavarian. Thus very well adapting her diction to French. I personally would have wished to listen to many more samples of her singing in French.

I recalled a few more recordings of Hallstein singing in French: the Mozart Lied "Oiseaux, si tous les ans" from the Salzburger Festspiele 1968 and a few opera arias from radio broadcast.

What kind of technique she's using? It's sounds very different compared to other sopranos.

Ingeborg Hallstein was, first and foremost, an operetta singer. This technique helped her pronounciation become super crisp, but her projection has suffered (since operettas are usually orchestrated pretty lightly). Combined with her light-as-air voice and never-ending high extension, she has a very uniquely light tone that lends itself very well to lyric coloratura show offs. She did not venture too deeply into more dramatic or lyric repertoire, though.

@@Yotam1703 What do you mean by "more lyric repertoire"?
