NIL Wreaking Havoc But Could The Solution(s) Come From Within For BYU & Big 12?| BYU Cougars Podcast

  • The BYU Cougars are working in a college athletics universe that is so out-of-whack that there seems to be no good answers for what the right course of action is, particularly when it comes to NIL and Jake Hatch believes that the best action to settle things down may have to come from within as compared to having at outside entity step in and regulate matters.
The BYU football program got some good news Monday night when 2025 defensive line prospect Kelepi Vete announced his commitment to play for Sione Po'uha, Jay Hill, Kalani Sitake and the rest of the Brigham Young University (BYU) football program and Jake's fervent hope is that Kelepi's pledge will induce his brother, Siosiua Vete, to join him in Provo.
Finally, the show wrapped up with some thoughts on Noah Waterman and the BYU basketball program after he formally put his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal as Jake attempted to add some context to his comments about Waterman's role with Kevin Young and BYU juxtaposed against what he could get on the open market in NIL and the transfer portal.

Noah was very consistent last year. Seems like a great kid. I’ll be sad if he goes.

Consistent? He played we against con conference teams but struggled against big12 teams

Surprised Noah didn’t jump into the portal sooner. Wouldn’t be bummed if he left as I felt like he shrunk in the big games, especially against Duquesne. Hopefully we land that UCLA freshman! 🙏🏾

At this point we need a player union and a CBA. It's a professional sport. They need contract limits and some semblance of order.

Are you gonna talk about these “rumblings on the hill” you talked about on Twitter?

Noah isn't leaving due to playing time. McCombs said KY was planning on starting Noah this next season.

Coach Kelly has always had a double standard. At Notre Dame he refused to release California athlete Eddie Vanderdoes from his NLI, stating you need to stand behind your word, and your signature. At the same time, he gave his word, signed a multi year commitment to Cincinnati, and dumped them like a crazy girlfriend when the Irish called.

Coaches saying “we’re selling some a little different” is so dumb. Everyone is. Is BYU different than LSU. ? Yes. But guess what…Miami is different than Wisconsin, which is different than Michigan, and they are different than UCLA.

Jake is right. Jense us wrong. Noah improved greatly from his 1st year at BYU. Nevertheless there were game periods where he disappeared. BYU is recruiting guys better than him. And he knows it. Pope and KY does not want him.
