      Honestly, I don't think she was "supposed to" have hit the ground. The panel of the comics it references, she definitely doesn't, and if the death was supposed to be due to cranial impact, you would expect a shot of him pulling his hand out from behind her head with blood on it (even if they don't explicitly show the wound). I'll give you that going through it frame-by-frame, it certainly looks like she does. But I suspect that's unintended.

    7:30 that looks so good because it's real. The mask is real, the robots putting the mask on him is CG, but they actually made a mechanical Iron Man mask that drops like that. A lot of the Iron Man suit is real too, pretty much just joints are CG.
    Edit: I'll also mention that at some point Robert Downey Jr. told Marvel Studios that he didn't want to wear the suit anymore, so it is entirely mo-cap CG for some movies, but the first Iron Man movie has a lot more practical effects than you'd expect from the MCU now.

      Probably a bit late to the party here being 8 months later, but wasn't one of the reasons behind him wanting to go full mo-cap because Ruffalo felt a bit ostracized being the only one out of the Avengers group necessitating being completely CG? If I recall correct, RDJ was hugely empathetic towards Ruffalo, because he was made fun of because he didn't "look" like a hero, and RDJ knew of his stature enough that if *he* did something, then others would quickly follow.
      I definitely remember Ruffalo being made fun of because he was the only one in spandex with ping-pong balls, around a group of people who had bows, and shields, and guns... I love him as the hulk, and as an actor in general regardless.

    Thank you for bringing up the physics of the actual people. In that shot of avengers, he would realistically have passed out from the G's, his organs would have compressed, and he would have serious damage in his spinal column. Or when superman catches someone, the sudden change would most likely snap the persons neck. That's why I like Quicksilver in the X men films. He Braces people before running around with them. He has learned throughout the years to throw things X fast and X hard so It doesn't just explode from suddenly being moved that fast. I especially like the scene where the school explodes. He throws people into water, cushions, anything to break their fall. Really smart.

    • @jameswiz
      @jameswiz Před rokem +3

      When the suit catches iron man, it doesn't just stop, but moves on a "rounded" trajectory, so his forces are reduced. He could pass out for sure... But humans can live through a ton of g forces.. in the 1940's a rocket sled test pilot survived over 46G's... The average rate of fall for a human, based on gravity and the drag from the air, make humans fall at around 120mph... So he's not going all that fast. He probably felt 10g's or so, but would live with little or no ill effects.

    • @kifleyesusmisgun9853
      @kifleyesusmisgun9853 Před rokem +1

      He is flying in back in a curved line if you look at it. Because first he slowed down with his thrusters from his hand. Then he changed his body position from feet to head falling, to head to feet stand. While he does that there is curve. He switch his foot thrusters on when he is mid curve to standing and flying back. So his organs are not dropping straight instead they are following the curve. So tony would feel the Gs of the momentum but not dye from it. But it is a small curve to be notice.

    When Iron Man broke his fall by blasting away with his thrusters, the first thing I had to think about was the poor people below him. they would've been baked and blasted away at the same time if that much force was directed down at them.
    Remember the Messerschmitt 262? That thing of course weighed much more than Iron man, but it couldn't accelerate as fast either... so would it be fair to say the engines have comparable total final thrust to Iron Man's? Anyway, the Me-262 went from being a tail-dragger design to having tricycle landing gear, because it literally melted the runway. You do NOT want to be near the exhaust of a running jet or rocket engine.
    EDIT: now I think about it, I wanna see an R-rated version of that scene after all. I know you found better scenes, but Iron Man saving himself could be a masterpiece of unintended consequences.

      I think it's because older movies that tend to be on shorter budget to what we get now, manage to simplify scenes in a way it looks good enough to be real, compared to new ones in which as you become more ambitious bc of the money input, sometimes you end complicating things more and end up with results that don't look so believable. We've here in Argentina an example called El Secreto de sus Ojos, half of it it's edited but it looks real, because scenes were pushed to looks right even with low budget

      in ALL of the iron man movies, you see him shrug off falls and weapon impacts that would actually be fatal. something doesnt have to breach his suit to kill him. and on that note, we dont really get to see how strong the armor actually IS - we never see him shot with anti-armor weaponry. lots of explosives and rifle-caliber bullets, but no shaped-charge or sabot rounds. stand him in front of an abrams main gun, and he would have a hole blown straight through him.
      later suits can be hand-waved better with him adding better (presumably active) protection. note the scene in civil war where rhodey's iron patriot suit gets its power knocked out and the injuries he takes from his fall.

      It was an ingenious combination of practical and cgi. when the heroes were sword fighting orcs in close up shots they were real actors in amazing makeup and costumes. CGI was mostly used for long establishing shots to show us scale and numbers. Jackson knew cgi up close at the time wasn't great (Gollum being the exception where they put a ton of work into just him and even then he looks dated now in some shots.) so when they used it the camera was far away. For shots of armies they would have the first few lines of soldiers be actors and then as it gets further away they used cgi for the rest which gave a realistic feel of scale (Game of Thrones has used this as well which is why their battles look astounding).

    • @asobibuddy8481
      @asobibuddy8481 Před 5 lety +4

      LoTR had a lot of practical effects. F.e. to make the Hobbits look small, they build the sets in weird angles, so filming from a specific perspective make them look smaller than Gandalf.
      In the Hobbit trilogy Jackson just said "fuck it" and made everything a green screen with shitty CGI.

    • @mister_xenomorph
      @mister_xenomorph Před 5 lety +3

      Agreed. It's absolutely astonishing that the CGI in the LoTR trilogy still holds up almost two decades down the cinematic road. There are a couple wonky shots, for sure (Legalos and the oliphaunts, anyone?), but only a few. The rest are simply golden and often look better than most CGI scenes in films today (my jaw still drops just seeing the Balrog swathed in flame).

    • @asobibuddy8481
      @asobibuddy8481 Před 5 lety +2

      The biggest problem with modern films is that the people in charge don't care for them anymore. Using LoTR as an example, Building all these sets and thinking about ways to film scene s in a certain way to help with the post-CGI requires thoughts and work.
      But Jackson didn't care for the Hobbit, those movies were nothing but a cash grab, so he went "well, can't we just do that scene in front of a greenscreen and put in all the stuff later? i want this shit wrapped up before 5 o'cock"
      It's not a matter of time in most cases and the CG is sometimes even more expensive than building sets, but if you're a lazy director, its a blessing for your movie.

    • @robertbrookes2000
      @robertbrookes2000 Před 5 lety +7

      Well Lotr is 80% practical effects. The 20% had loads of time dedicated to making it look good. Rather than the Hobbit, which was 70% cgi, and therefore had less time to properly polish it all, so Gollum looks amazing, but the white orcs don't.
