    I agree with most of the things y’all are saying. Most of the time any package going first class I and it’s a low dollar item I’ll offer free shipping. The one reason I don’t like offering free shipping though is you list at a higher price, and when people send offers they tend to want more money off, but don’t realize it’s gonna cost the seller money to ship. So instead, to stay competitive, I pass my eBay shipping discount price onto the buyer so I only charge very close to actual shipping since I use a lot of the padded flat rate envelopes for shoes and that can give me an advantage over those that so calculated shipping. Like you said, more than one way to win everybody has the same preferences it’s just always a bummer offering free shipping and because the buyer lives so far away you have to pay more but it’s the risk you take for sure

      Ya you do know now you still pay for shipping and now ebay is charging you 30% of the shipping cost so 10$ shipping now cost 13.33 so offering free ship cost money. are buyers really so stupid they dont check the PRICE TOTAL. wHO ACTUALLY BELIEVES PEOPLE WILL PAY MORE FOR FREE SHIPPING AND SKIP A LOWER TOTAL PRICE ???? NO WAY JOSE you are fooling yourself

    • @christinerobinson890
      @christinerobinson890 Před 3 lety

      @Henry Lindeman, yes eBay charges on the shipping, but not 30%. It’s still the 10 % (plus promotion, if applicable). You pay this either way, whether if it’s “free” or charged. When I buy, I sort from low to high. Shipping is included in this, so I still get the cheapest first. I don’t always buy the cheapest. Sometimes I might buy from someone closer to Michigan to get my product faster, but that doesn’t always work. I also don’t expect immediate delivery. Even amazon is no longer next day. I’m sometimes waiting a week to get items on prime. Of course I had a buyer last week who was expecting same day DELIVERY 🙄🙄🙄, then he complained about the product when he got it, then demanded a return. You can’t make everyone happy.

    Great video. I more than doubled my sales when I switched to all free shipping. I also never use flat rate boxes but go through lots of padded flat rate envelopes. I have found the magic number for large heavy packages is keeping one dimension at 6 inches or less. Makes a big reduction if you can use large flat boxes under 6 inches thick.

    This method I agree is better most of the time especially on lighter items. However heavier items there is a counter argument, if a buyer is closer to you and they sort by lowest price you might get the sale with calculated shipping because it ends up being the best option for them.

    OK, I tried this for 4 months. I am on the East Coast. This makes addresses in the middle and West Coast very expensive. For instance, a winter coat that weighs 3lbs might cost $9 in my own zone, but $20 to California. When I offered free shipping, I got a lot of buyers from the West Coast which meant I ate a lot of shipping costs. So, this free shipping works well for sellers on the West Coast and in the Central States. Since I went to calculated shipping, it essentially forced most of my sales to come from closer buyers because somebody has to eat the shipping! I sold a sewing machine to a buyer in Pennsylvania. It costs $26 to ship (very heavy). To ship to California it would have cost $89! :P
    Thanks for the bid!

    • @hustlinhooks
      @hustlinhooks  Před 3 lety

      Are you getting your shipping labels thru ebay? You have to price in the average shipping cost and over the long term you will win. We explain exactly what you just said in the video. If free shipping does not work for you, don’t offer it.

    • @ljwhitmire200
      @ljwhitmire200 Před 3 lety +1

      @@hustlinhooks I used PirateShip until I got the TRS discount from Ebay. Since I'm on the East Coast and there are a LOT of buyers on the West Coast, I found with Free Shipping I was getting a lot of orders from the West Coast AND the Territories. My shipping costs went through the roof. If I lived in the middle of the country or on the West Coast, then I could easily eat the the costs to the East Coast. Take for example if 70% of my sales are from the West Coast, 30% in East. If I'm on the West Coast, then the average shipping costs are lower. But, I'm on the East Coast, so that make 70% of my shipping labels high! I know some jeans, for instance, will fit in a flat rate envelope. But, I sell a lot of men's jeans, and most of them just don't fit. So, I personally decided that the only way to "encourage" West coast buyers NOT to buy my items was to charge shipping.
      In the end, I can't set the market price for anything. When I list something, I can only list it for what everybody else is selling it for (price+shipping). So, I have to set that price and ship to whomever buys it. Free shipping makes the buyer not consider shipping which means I pay it. So, in my 4 month experiment, such a large percentage of sales came from the West Coast that I was losing tons of money due to high shipping costs. Now for First Class, it doesn't matter. The reason I stopped free with light items is that honestly, most buyers completely disregarded shipping being included when they sent me offers. Calculating shipping made negotiating better. I had people send me offers from the West Coast for an item for $3! The shipping costs $5! By and large they didn't care. So, my response was to charge shipping. Of course, I make sure my price+shipping is in line with the market.
      There's also a glitch on Ebay that was "magically" converting some listings to Free Shipping if I had ANY shipping policies that were free. So, I killed all the policies that had free shipping just to get around the glitch. :)
      The Free Shipping model just comes down to the make up of your sales. 10 years ago shipping wasn't so expensive, so it was easier for my case. I'm not trying to contradict your model, just point out for everyone's benefit that it works in certain instances and not in others. Thanks for taking the time to start a discussion! :)

    I started out with one day turn around,but I couldn’t work my 12 hour shifts and keep up with that. Plus I travel short trips frequently, so I had to switch to five day, although I almost always get it all shipped next day. Last year I moved away from free shipping. I didn’t notice much change in sales until April, but that may be the normal summer slow down. I sometimes sit at work and play with my listings. I may remove the offers portion. I find offers frustrating if they make them because the “don’t pay” rate is high. I think people go through all the listings of a desired item, make offers, and only buy the best one. This is against the rules but people do it anyway. There have been times when I have three items where I accepted their offer and they sit until I finally cancel the order after a week. I present offer to all watchers. Sale rate is about 25%.

    I’ve viewed a few of your current items for sale and the shipping option is “Expedited Priority”. A few questions (possible video topic). Have you, like most of us resellers experienced an packages that are “in transit” for a long amount of time? Do you only ship USPS? What about FedEx and UPS? I’ve had a couple buyers really upset that they’ve not received their Priority package that was sent out 10-14 days ago and it’s still in transit. Shipping right now is a HUGE issue. Would love to see a video on this ASAP if possible :) Thanks for all you do for the reselling community. Peace. Jeff

      @hustlinhooks  Před 3 lety

      We use whatever shipping carrier is cheapest. We have had a couple shipments delayed “in transit”. It’s just the time of the year. Do your beat to ship out on time and the rest is out of your control. Upset customers is common during this season, just be kind to them. Hope that helps.

    Also consider the possibility of returns and the inability to separate shipping on the refund. This might be a little tougher on clothing resellers, not as much of an issue to hard goods.

      We sell clothing and hard goods, are return rate is below 2%. Buyer pays for returns unless we make a mistake, has never been an issue for us.

    Melinda & Edin, I’m so thrilled I found your videos just yesterday! Looking forward to watching them all! I love your content! I live in So Cal, I’m a stay at home Mom and I’ve been working on turning our yard into a Urban Farmstead. I’d love to be able to start selling organic produce, plant starts, fruit trees, tropical fruits & cut flowers by next year. My thought is be a reseller to help support my family and fund my farming. I sold a lot of my Grandad’s vintage collections on eBay last year when he was moved into long-term-care. I still have hundreds of his items I can list of his (I will get some of the profits from the sales) and help him out as well. I also have lots of items I don’t need or use that I intend on selling first before I would start thrifting to find new items to sell.
    Where do you source your shipping materials (bubble wrap, mailers, etc)? Previously I’ve never included free shipping, instead I’d include an estimated flat shipping fee. My thought process was to still have a competitive price, but separate the shipping, so eBay wouldn’t take a percent of the shipping cost, which is what happens when you have free shipping. Also since a lot of the items are fairly valuable, so I try to add additional insurance to cover the value. Would you advise me to start including shipping in my pricing? Also how do you track your expenses and write off them on your taxes? I’d love to hear any advice you guys may have for me. Thank you so much!
    Simone

      Hey Simone! Glad you found us too!
      Ebay takes a % of the total sale, regardless of free or flat rate or calculated shipping.
      As far as advice on shipping, it’s up to you, there are no wrong ways of doing this.
      We keep track of all business expenses for taxes, however we are not certified accountants. Please work with a professional CPA for taxation questions.
      We get most of our packing materials from recycle dumpsters. We buy bulk craft paper and bubble wrap from ebay.
      Thanks for the note! Hope that answered your questions.

    • @wildrainbowfarms2316
      @wildrainbowfarms2316 Před 3 lety

      Thanks so much! It helps a lot, I didn’t realize that eBay would also deduct their fee from the shipping price.
      Do you have an idea of about how many items you list and sell on a daily or weekly basis? I’d love to to get an idea on what my goal should be.
      I’m almost done with all your videos, I can’t wait for more! I’d love to see one on tips for selling on Etsy and Poshmark too!
      Wishing your family health, happiness & success!
      Simone

    As a seller , I always hated the " Free Shipping" idea because it doesn't actually exist and it makes your items seem to appear more expensive. As a buyer on Ebay , I never look for it either , because I know that $10 plus $8 shipping is still better than $20 free shipping.
    I looked at sold items and I noticed that most of them don't have free shipping either .

    Thank you for making this video. Excellent and inspiring. I’ll try anything to boost sales in my store. 40% sales and +2 above suggested ad rate, fast shipping and Free Returns haven’t improved things much. When I started serious (July) I never understood the importance of sell thru rate which is probably the primary cause for slow sales on 450+ items. Now that I’m being more selective about what I source, some of my newer items are getting sold. I wonder about my store’s traffic taking a dive if I turn off sales and Promoted Listings. Best one so far sale for me at eBay. It’s promising. I believe! Trust the process. Lol.

I would forgot some had free shipping and then I would run a sale. or, like you mentioned, I have offers on and I accepted an offer that was too low. so........ is your model free shipping, no additional discounts unless you send an offer to watchers? no sales run? I understand how you price things to add in the shipping, I'm trying to figure out how to capture sales besides ppl coming to me and just liking my price. does this make sense?

    • @hustlinhooks
      @hustlinhooks  Před 3 lety +1

      1) if you make drastic changes to a business model based off of a small sample, a micro short term sample, you will have a hard time winning, this is true in any business
      2) we don’t run sales, we did this twice before to more inventory, have not done it in a long time
      3) yes, free shipping, best offers OFF unless we send offers. We price so that when we are sending offers, we are still winning.
      Hope that helps!
