Great video. I'm a banner towing pilot and we operate out of a 400m long grass field. When I have to use carb heat because of weather conditions, I do open it when reducing power for landing and I just close it on short final. It is a good habit not only to avoid a possible dirt/debris carb ingestion during soft field operations, but in case of a go around.

"No carb heat since we're landing on grass." What does landing on grass have to do with whether you use carb heat on the approach? The grass will not stop your carb from icing up in the pattern at lower RPMs. You should use your carb heat until short final, then "Carb Heat OFF." No worries about unfiltered grassy air making it into the carb.

I landed on the grass runway for the first time last week. Held it off, held it off...and set her right down real nice. A good and patient instructor makes all the difference. Then made a 95 on the private written exam the next day!

When I was flying years ago I did many grass landings, day and night, and short field. Learning how to slip in an airplane is a good skill to know..

I fly from a short grass strip. It gets soggy in winter. In the spring and the grass grow long till it is mowed down.

I think looking out at the end of the runway is the best way to get the proper sight picture needed for landing. You can't fixate on the touchdown point too much or you will loose your depth perception.

@brugudel are there trees or buildings at the end of the runway directly ahead of you? Try looking at those

Maybe try to have some power on touch down? 13 - 14 rpm will help reduce the risk of nose diving and prop strike since the elevator becomes much more effective with the additional airflow.

How can you determine that the grass next to the runway is landable? I might want to try this at my local airport.
To be honest, I would walk it first before I landed on it. Check the distance and check for pot holes and soft spots unless it’s obvious that people regularly make grass landings out there
that's great... but I fly a real (Tailwheel) airplane... any tips for soft field with a tail dragger?

Why no carb heat for a grass landing?
Carb heat is unfiltered air that is blown directly over the exhaust then vented into the carburetor. If you kick up any dirt on landing, it could end up in your carb and contaminate your fuel or gum up the carb
@@FreePilotTraining Ah ok, good call. It's on the checklist for my Dad's 172B, so it's pretty ingrained in my mental pre-landing checklist lol.
@@paperclipmaniac I think it’s a newer mindset. I actually have always used carb heat on the soft field, and I did a bunch of research to make sure there wasn’t anything I was missing before I made this video to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I read an article that discussed that, so I thought it would be smart to throw it in there. I should have explained that better.

I once worked for ag-viation in biggs ca. they built and repaired grumman g-164 and the many sub types of that model. we used to go get wrecked planes every so often.
once we went out to get a super b. the engine had failed and the pilot chose a nice looking field to land on... the tire tracks told the whole story. touched down once, then again, and just about the time the pilot was thinking "damn I'm good" the tires hit a soft spot and then he was upside down going "wow, did I really have all that shit in my pockets??" he walked away without injury aside from pride and the lump on his head from falling out of his seat when his loaders tripped the 5 point latch and he fell on his head.
the owner of the plane was upset because the crash didnt do enough damage to 'total' the plane... it was a 'good' crash. we can all laugh about it today.

@@FreePilotTraining it didnt realy get all that hurt. a new rudder, elevator and the last four feet of the frame were toast. but the wings and the rest of the fuselage were fine. kinda like having to replace the bed on a pick-up truck.... these days that would be totaled, but in 1993, not so much.
With all these videos the narration is always much quieter than the flight audio. When you switch back and forth we have to adjust the volume manually. This one hurt my ears when switching to the landing footage 😕
Thanks for the feedback. You’ll be surprised to know that the flight audio is already turned way down and the narration is higher but I will continue to work on that.
9.20 "No Carb heat, because landing on grass" -- Why?
A lot of aircraft use unfiltered air blowing over the exhaust manifold to feed into the carburetor for the carb heat. Any dust that you kick up on landing is likely to make its way into the carburetor and contaminate the fuel and possibly gum up the carb. I’ve landed on grass a lot with carb heat, and I’ve never noticed any issues, but I guess it could cause a problem if you use it.
@@FreePilotTraining Thanks for the very prompt reply. On balance selecting carb heat when reducing RPM on landing would be a better saety choice than worrying about ingestion when touching down.
Many pilots including me select carb heat on late downwind then put it away 200feet before touchdown (not for ingestion reasons) but to ensure instant full power and reduction in workload in the event of a go-around.
Doing the above would resolve the ingestion problem as well.
