    At last it is good to hear the technical advantages of dual plug ignition and electronic ignition from someone who clearly knows a lot more than just how to adjust a clutch. Lovely stuff Mike, that was a treat to watch.

      @@pacificmike9501 i have an 81 shovel 96" stroker that is running dual coil dual plug heads single fire and this same dynatek ignition. Im told you should retard the timing about 5 degrees with dual plugs. How do you set yours? Im not sure if i can just program that in, use the stock curve 4 which is 32 degrees or set the tdc mark forward in the timing hole? Thanks in advance for any input

    Good video quality and sound. Mike is very knowledgeable as a result of all his years on the Harley Davidson. His explanation concerning the hemispherical combustion chamber is very good and easy to understand why they put 2 spark plugs in each cylinder. Thank you Mike for sharing your knowledge to people like me who has not owned a Harley but can appreciate them thru you!

    Nice explanation about position of the sparkplugs, never thought much about it, and dual fire actually makes sense. I entered the world of electronic ignition on my 80" Shovel -79 this summer and I agree that I'm not totally crazy about the VOES, but it seems to work fine so far. But it was huge job to make space for it under the FatBob-tank, very, very tight. Thank you for another inspiring video.

    Hey Mike good video tonight...
    While I was out on the road this evening about 8 or so miles from home. It started to spit a little rain. Lightning and thundering. Then the rain got a little heavier. More sky lightning. And then it started pouring so hard I had to stop. Thankfully i wasn't that far away from a gas station with a canopy over the pumps to seal some refuge . Well by the time i got home the only thing dry was a little spot on the top of my head under my helmet. Man it poured hard.. oh well that's how it goes..See you out on the road..lol.

    Nice video Mike. I have a rebuilt 1979 80” Shovel and am running a VOES switch with a Ultima ignition. The Ultima is a Dyna module repackaged as a Ultima and cheaper. The bike is kick only with a Super E and 99% of the time starts on the first kick.Tatro Machine in San Diego rebuilt the motor and has software to program the module for kick only applications.He did his magic and as stated earlier, the bike starts 99% of the time on the first kick.The Shovel runs like a violated ape.Keep up the great work !

    Listening to you talk about This shovelhead is overwhelmingly exciting! I know that sounds weird and kind of goofy but, I just really loved both my shovelheads. I say both as in two, because the 79 FLH Was a basket case,, I had to sell it after my motorcycle wreck to pay for medical bills. . .

      Keith Parr, you can run electronic ignition on a Panhead too. Theres a plate that drops in the stock distributor. Hotter spark and consistent. I also have put an electronic regulator on the bike. The generator doesn't work as hard now. I still have the big Delco regulator on the bike for original look. I made a plate to mount the electronic regulator under the bike. Been on there for about eleven years now.

    Interesting show. I'm running points and condenser on a 78 shovel. Nothing even close to your ignition but it works for me. I carry a extra condenser and points in the saddle bag. You probably already know this, but in the event someone doesn't. The points for a 1960's General Motors 6 cylinder 235 cubic inch engine work well in a Harley. You do have to do a little modification using a file on the points bracket. If you purchase new points and compare to the points you took out you will see what I mean. Thank you for another great video. Keep the rubber side down and have a great 4th.

He asked me why , and I explained that Harely had to conform more and more to noise and emmisions Reg's , and , Hondas Flagship , Expensive NR750 with oval Pistons had not really caught on , and Honda had been left with shelves full of Oval Pistons , H.D. had done a deal , and I was on the Experimental Motorcycle , with Honda oval Pistons and needed two Spark Plugs . The problem is, being able to retard far enough to start easily, then being able to advance far enough to run well. There needs to be broad enough adjustment. An electric starter is much more forgiving. If a unit is programmable enough to give you enough timing choices, it's fine for kick starting.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Před 4 lety +3

      That is a highly modified original fender that came with the bike when I bought it new. I have never liked the stock fender struts. So, one of my close friends, a very talented guy, Jack Foster, built "internal struts" for me. They are welded in and go in place of the originals, all the way forward and all the way back. They are handmade of 1/4" steel plate. The fender hinge has also been removed and the fender welded shut. The original tailight hole has also been filled. I used the original fender because I like the bead that runs all the way around it. All of the work on it is done in steel. One can easily lift the bike by the rear fender.

    Dave Mackie dual plug heads, 9:5.1 pistons, dyna 2000i Ignition. Problem is the long plugs are resistor plugs (autolite 4265), where the short reach plugs are not (autolite 4275). Any advice or recommendations on correct plugs to use? Thanks again, and enjoy the channel!

    Mike, I like to revisit your videos to get more insight. I am late to the party again. I did an upper rebuild on my 83 shovel. I had points but converted to electronics. The bikes runs good. Good fuel mileage. 175 degrees with an added oil cooler. I kept the engine stock. I have a super e carb on it. My question. When I check the plugs after a ride, they're darken and not that tan color. Not oily. Probably running rich. No dark smoke out of the exhaust. I tried the lean mixture adjustment on the carb, but it's not improving the look on the plugs. Someone mentioned that it's ok to run it a little rich so the engine runs cooler. Thoughts?? thanks.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Před 2 lety

      I like to run a little rich. There are folks out there that run right up to the edge of too lean, and they run too warm. A little rich is okay. You could try a slightly leaner low speed jet and see how it runs. Again, a little rich does tend to run a little cooler.

      It's really something you need to experiment with for yourself on your machine. The Dynatek ignition I use on my Shovelhead is configured to that motor with me riding it. That's the purpose of the adjustments. Normally, when there are curves available to you, you start with the most aggressive and then go to the next milder if the first one detonates.

    The Loneliness of the Long Distance Flame Front. - by Lod.
    'Pity the single spark plug, in darkness, sat there fizzing,
    & faced with a curving landscape, to send it's flame front whizzing,
    far across the other side, to then push the piston down,
    trouble is, that while en-route, it barbeques the crown,
    for hydrocarbons careth not, who they scorch & damage,
    they'll dump their heat just getting there, it really is quite savage. (ouch, sorry)
    So fit a second sparky thing, to centralize the score,
    then instead of burning sideways, & pushing on the bore,
    everything lines up nice & straight, no bias to one side,
    for The Lady loves a linear push, it helps her pistons glide.'
    (I feel this is probably the point where, . . . I should just 'go & put the kettle on'. Happy trundling : )

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Před 4 lety

      You do it according to the manufacturer. Time the points according to the advance mark with the ignition at full advance. This system is set at TDC and the "brain" in there automatically advances to where it is programmed. You're not wrong.

      Depends upon what you want to spend. The older they are, the more simple and basic they are. The older they are, the more the parts are expensive and "in demand." They're all fun. What kind of riding are you going to do with it. Personally, my Shovelhead (the only bike I ever bought new) is my comfortable road bike. My Panhead is always ready to go and is great as an old time crowd pleaser. She looks so stock and is great in the mountains. My Knucklehead is for when I need a thrill. I forget how old I am and have a tendency to get out of hand. The project bike is going to fill a void and become a roadbike/hot rod, out of the forties and early fifties.

    Putting in a Dyna S on my 72' XLCH and I'm at the "static timing" portion. Instructions does call for the front cylinder to be on its compression stroke. I put my "line" at the center of the inspection hole. Not the "dots". When watching your video you mentioned that the line was the rear cylinder. I was about to change it, but checked my old HD service manual titled: "Sportsters 1970 to 1978", first. There's a figure 5-19 showing the line in the middle. The description reads: Advance timing mark on flywheel for front cylinder piston 1971 and later. 40 degree BTC. Can you help me understand? I've owned this bike since 1984 and it was always a 2 kick start ......until I had the motor rebuilt. Now it's not reliable. With a kick start, that's not too good for this 62 year old vet. Hoping that going electronic is the way back to her former glory.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  Před rokem

      The line is where the front cylinder should fire at full advance. Position it in the window. Remember to be sure your front cylinder is on its compression stroke. That's with the front piston coming up and both front valves closed.

    • @pacificmike9501

      Yes. One set of points will run two coils. I've done it before, but used heavy duty (in this case, Mallory) condensers, one on each coil. Dual points was something that drove me up a wall, trying to keep them in sync. Dual points on a cone motor is not too hard to create, just hard to keep in tune.
