Thank you for taking this journey with me! We will be watching The Hobbit a little bit later this year (closer to the new Lord of the Rings movie coming out). The Hobbit trilogy is solid, but nothing is as good as what you just watched. You have reached the peak of cinema. It's all down from here, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The Hobbit is a not a huge book really not as extensive as The Lord of The Rings Book. It is a small book because that one was considered a children's book with only 19 chapters and yet Peter Jackson managed to make that into three movies too. We enjoyed watching it. I noticed he had switched some lines around to other characters and created a new character too. We too are looking forward to LOTR The War of the Rohirrim. We'll see what happens! Peace.

If read this i love that you did in one older comment, when i looked up the books version, Samwise, and Gimi the Dwarf also goes to the Elfish lands as they invited Gimli or so spelled was invited by Legulis or o spelled they were friends so he asked him this once to let the Dwarf in , and Samwise became leader of the Hobbits when he got old he left his book with his daughter i recall read, and he joined Frodo etc in the elfish lands down the road. So the group.. Eventually endup together, as far as i recall reading Aragorn lived a long life with his wife being a great king and making middle earth really great. So from what i recall about the book ending ... A very very happy ending! By the way i stand by it same as Writer Samwise is the hidden hero, he said u dont have to be big or a great fighter, but a heart of gold and brave even in the size of a hobbit though all of them are indeed heros i recall the writer saying Samwise is that hidden like gem hero that without him even the most brave powerful evne Frodo couldnt of done it. So in the end Samwise is like Frodo said .. Samwise the Brave. "The Hidden" Hero.

Frodo never recovered from the mordor stab wound in the 1st film that's why he had to go... it was a parallel of tolkeins experiences of the 1st World War, soldiers coming home mutilated or with ptsd .... being home but unable to settle back...

  • @Pentarax
    @Pentarax Před 2 měsíci +31

One of the heartwarming bits is; not only did Frodo and Gandalf take the ship to the Blessed Realm, but years later after Rosie had passed on, Sam went as well. Legolas (being one of the Elves) took a ship after Aragorn passed on, and because Gimli was held in such high honor by the Elves (Galadriel in particular), he became the first Dwarf given permission to enter Valinor.
So...most of the Fellowship eventually reunited for good.

Eowyn and Merry were both poisoned by contact with the Witch King. The only one who knew the plant to help them and had the healing touch to call them back from the brink of Death was the King of Gondor...Aragorn. Faramir had also been poisoned and Aragorn healed him. The relationship between Eowyn and Faramir took place during several weeks in the "hospital."
Sam actually wore the ring to rescue Frodo in the book. The ring tried to corrupt Sam but in the end Sam's only ambition was for a garden of his own.

"You fool. No man can kill me. Die now."
    "I am no man!"
Fun Fact: To get enough extras for the Battle at the Black Gate, a few hundred members of the New Zealand Army were brought in. They apparently were so enthusiastic during the battle scenes that they kept breaking the wooden swords and spears they were given.
Pyromantic Ring Fact: In the scene when Denethor (John Noble) attempts to burn Faramir (David Wenham) on the pyre, the pyre could not truly be on fire, because Gandalf's (Sir Ian McKellen) horse would not go near it. To solve this, the crew reflected a real fire onto a pane of glass in front of the camera, so that it looks as though the pyre is burning.
Real Arachnophobia Fact: For the scene when Frodo gets pierced by Shelob, Elijah Wood had two Alka-Seltzers hidden under his tongue, which he chewed up to create white foam, which he then leaked out of the corner of his mouth. Elijah Wood was wrapped in a latex-like material that represented Shelob's webbing. On the DVD, he jokes that it is like being encased in the world's largest condom.

At 7:22 you ask, "Where's the trees!" The movie makers have greatly simplified the War of the Ring to make an exciting movie. In the book, Sauron had sent not one but several armies to attack Middle-earth, including an army from the Black Gate to attack the northern flank of the Rohirrim. Treebeard later tells Gandalf, "...and they came over the River and down from the North...And these same foul creatures were more than surprised to meet us out on the Wold, for they had not heard of us before...And not many will remember us, for not many escaped us, and the River had most of those."

    • @HellNaught
      @HellNaught Před 2 měsíci

I think 5 armies in all, they kinda lump the easterlings and haradrim in the movies, and minimalize the corsairs. Still epic.

Sam became the mayor of Hobbiton and held the position for many many years. Rosie and him had 13 (or was it 15?) kids. When Rosie died and the kids were grown up, Sam got the chance of sailing to Valinor (Elf country across the sea) and reunite with Frodo there. :) The appendices at the end of the third book tells us about all the members of the fellowship until their deaths. Pretty cool! (but long, so I'll just write about Sam here.

Shelob (the spider) is one of the scariest things I've ever seen (17 ft long, eek!!), and I've seen a ton of horror/monster movies! Sam is stated to be the only person to ever hurt Shelob so badly (and she was alive before even Sauron!). For me, Sam is the hero - he's a character everyone should try to be like, I think. Absolutely loyal and brave. For a long time Legolas was my favorite (predictable) but as I got older, I appreciated Sam more and more.

Also Sam used the ring several times trying to follow the orcs so he and Bilbo alone freely let it go. The light in the bottle is the light of a Silmaril. Captured from the two trees of light in Valinor by Feanor of the Noldor in three gems he made. The trees were killed by Ungoliant, Shelobs mother and the Silmarills were stolen by Morgoth with Ungoliants help….its a long story and Sam was a hero in it.

👏👏Another excellent reaction Cole! I am so glad you enjoyed the entire series and that it exceeded your expectations! No need for apologies for shedding tears after Gandalf spoke to Pippin about death, like you many of us can say those words hit home for us too! I enjoyed your entire reaction to this movie series! The following information I looked up and does not spoil anything. It follows what became of the members of the fellowship after ROTK.
Fourth Age: As you know, Samwise married Rose after the War of the Ring and they had a daughter named Elanor. In the year 1427, Samwise Gamgee is elected mayor of the shire for the first time and in the year 1431 has another daughter named Goldilocks. In the year 1442 Samwise and his family travel to Gondor, where they stay for a year in the fair city of Minas Tirith. Following his first election, Samwise is elected mayor of the Shire almost continuously until the year 1469 where he is elected for the seventh and final time at the age of ninety-six. In the year 1482, Sam’s beloved wife Rose dies. Following this, Sam rides out from Bag End, passing down the red book given to him by Frodo to his first daughter Elanor. According to his daughter, Sam travelled to the Grey Havens, whereupon he crossed the sea into Valinor, the last of the ring bearers to leave Middle Earth, reunited once more with Frodo in the Undying Lands. It is where the elves go to live out the rest or their eternal life.
Pippin and Merry have similarly high-profile lives in the Fourth Age. In the year 1427, Pippin marries a hobbit named Diamond of Long Cleeve and in the year 1430, his son Faramir is born, named in respect of the great friendship Pippin and Faramir share. In 1434, Pippin becomes the Thain of the Shire, meaning he was in charge of the Shire militia in the event they went to war and becomes well-respected in the Shire. In 1463 Pippin’s son Faramir marries Goldilocks, daughter of Samwise, linking our hobbits together in the bonds of matrimony and family adding to their already deep bond of fellowship.
Merry, in 1432, called Merry the Magnificent by Shirefolk, becomes the master of Buckland. For this appointment, he receives gifts from King Éomer of Rohan and from Lady Éowyn of Ithilien. It is said Merry marries a hobbit called Estella. In 1484, Merry receives a message from King Éomer who wishes to see him again before he dies, by this time Merry himself was 102. Merry and Pippin, handing their titles down to their sons, set off together to Rohan, Merry being present when Éomer dies. Following the death of Éomer, Pippin and Merry continue on to Gondor and live out the rest of their life in Minas Tirith. Following their deaths their bodies were entombed in Rath Dínen, the hall in which the great kings and stewards of Gondor were laid to rest.
Gimli and Legolas also had quite the journey following the defeat of Sauron, travelling together and continuing their unbreakable bond of friendship. Gimli was named ‘elf friend’ one of the only dwarves to be named such and brought a band of dwarves from Erebor to the caves behind Helms Deep. The caves in the books are known for being one of the wonders of the north, with jewels lining the walls and ceilings. Gimli becomes the Lord of the Glittering Caves and together with his people, he fashions new gates for Minas Tirith made of mithril and steel to replace the ones destroyed by the Witch King. Gimli took Legolas to the Glittering Caves whereupon he was said to be speechless at their beauty, the first time a Dwarf “claimed victory over an Elf in a contest of words.” In turn Legolas took Gimli to all the forests of Middle Earth, including Fangorn, educating Gimli on the beauty that dwelt there. Legolas also brought elves out from the Greenwood (his realm, previously known as Mirkwood during the 2nd and 3rd age) into Ithilen where they dwelt for a number of years, transforming Ithilien into the most beautiful land in the West. Legolas and the elves also aided Gimli in the rebuilding of Minas Tirith, making it once more the jewel in the crown of the men of the west,
Aragorn, now known as King Elessar married Arwen, and it is said that he had a son, and numerous daughters. He took many steps to fix the divided kingdom which he inherited. Though Sauron was defeated, there were many who still had evil in their minds and sought to disrupt Middle Earth thus Elessar defended Middle Earth, protecting the kingdom of men.
After many years have passed, and with the passing of Elessar/Aragorn, Legolas builds a ship in the Grey Havens and sails to the Undying Lands, accompanied by Gimli, the only dwarf to ever be given this honor. It is said that Galadriel, high among the Elves obtained this grace for Gimli, allowing him entry into Valinor with his beloved friend Legolas. And with the passing of Legolas and Gimli into the Undying Lands, so to did the fellowship pass forever out of Middle Earth and their like was never seen again.
    Peace! ☮

At 22:43 you say, "That was a legendary move from Sam." In the book Sam spends an extended period carrying the Ring, long enough for it to start playing with his mind. "Wild fantasies arose in his mind, and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land...at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers...He had only to put on the Ring...and all this could be." Sam had enough Hobbit-sense to know that the Ring was messing with him.

I've reread the books many times in my 70 years, and rewatched the movies every winter, and watched many LOTR reaction videos. As great as these movies are (my favorites), the books are even greater, and then there's _The Silmarillion_ book to take in, which is the deep backstory to LOTR, so maybe your illuminating quotes from the books will encourage some who are "quite ready for another adventure."

She is the daughter of Ungolianth the Great which killed the two trees of light in Valinor in the elder days of the first age of the world. No one really knows what happened to Ungolianth but it is said that in her monstrous hunger she finally eat Herself and perished.

Two people were able to give the Ring up voluntarily: Bilbo and Sam. Frodo never had a chance of succeeding in. Destroying it. No one would have. It took the perfect storm of Frodo, Sam, and Gollum to destroy it, with a good dose of divine intervention, fate, or the ring’s own perverseness thrown in.

And Legolas and Gimli took the boat at the same time as Frodo. :) I will follow you going forward and also look through your library of already done videos. Cya around. Cheers for Norway 🇳🇴 :)

In case no-one else has mentioned it, Frodo was given the honor of sailing to Valinor, the Undying Lands, because he was a Ring-bearer. It also was done so the Elves could help him heal, from both the physical wound (stabbed by a Morgul blade) and the psychological trauma of carrying the ring for a year.
After Frodo's departure, Samwise went on to become the leader of his people. He was elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive seven-year terms. Finally, widowed and retired, the elves sent a boat for him as well. Though his time carrying the ring was brief, the Elves deemed him worthy, and he, too, sailed to Valinor to be re-united with his friend for the rest of his days.

30:07 The ring was breaking Frodo indeed. But not only that, the song in the background is being broken too. Howard Shore, the guy who composed the soundtrack, tells a story with the music too. Bear with me, and I'll explain why: I recommend you watch the video called "How Howard Shore Makes Us Care" here on YT, from a channel called Listening In. It's one of my favorite videos about LotR because it explains how the hobbit theme song is broken throughout the movie, as well as Frodo with the ring, and how a new sample comes in place (Gandalf talking to Pippin about the afterlife) until it's fully complete when Frodo leaves, to finally rest. I love this movie, also because of that, you know. Gandalf talking to Pippin made you emotional, and the song was doing it too - the video shows this part. I might have spoiled it a little bit, but honestly, it's worth a watch. Howard Shore is a genius, alongside Hans Zimmer, in my opinion.

I loved your reaction. I think it’s impossible to get thru ROTK without crying. The line that gets me every time is “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.”
One of my favorite parts is when the woman and the Hobbit who had no business fighting on the war took out the Witch King. Speaking of the Witch King, they nerfed Gandalf in that encounter. When Gandalf the White first showed up, he told Gimli that he, Gandalf, was the most dangerous thing in Middle Earth unless Gimli were brought before Sauron.
When you’re editing, check out the ring Gandalf is wearing. It’s the third elven ring, the ring of Fire, and Gandalf uses it to kindle spiritual fire in those he guides. He can use it to spark courage and hope in those who are afraid or despairing.
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read the books and seen the movies, and I love it when someone new to the trilogy is overwhelmed by it. Welcome to the group of those who know what all 5he hype is about.

'come on frodo open your hobbit ears man ... get a haircut' made me choke on my drink omg
but also isn't it kinda poetic that frodo cannot strangle gollum to death because his empathy and kindness for him runs too deep and that is also the reason why he can hold the ring for so long and ultimately sparing gollum (like gandalf urged him to do in the first film) is the reason why the ring was destroyed? once within mount doom the ring's power is unquantifiable literally no one has the strength to destroy it and it is so so cool that the ring is only destroyed accidentally in the fight because gollum was NOT killed by frodo earlier on, because he showed him mercy
    peak writing tbh

When Gollum swore the oath on the Precious to serve the Maser of the Ring his fate was sealed. Frodo had warned him the Ring is treacherous it will hold you to your word. Frodo warned him at the gate of Mordor again that if he commanded Gollum to cast himself into the fire the Ring would make him do it. Oaths are very dangerous and Feanor’s oath to recover the Silmarills led to kin slaying among the elves. The Noldor returned from Valinor among them was Galadriel in whose hair was light of the two Trees. Which is why her gift to Gimli was so precious. She also told Gimli that even though gold would flow through his hands it would have no power over him.

Great to see you complete this trilogy. It truly is an amazing experience. If you think back on the LOTR trilogy you'll realize that Sam and Frodo's relationship comes full circle when Sam pulls Frodo off the cliff after the ring is destroyed. Remember back to the end of the first movie when Sam wades out in that river to Frodo and nearly drowns. You see the image of Frodo's hand reaching down to Sam underwater and pulling him to safety. Then, at the very end of the tale, the tables are turned and this time Sam reaches down and rescues Frodo from fire. Fire and water. Give and take. Their friendship is the major thread woven throughout the entire trilogy. There is no friendship like this.

I really wish they added the part where Sam actually wears the ring like in the book.
I feel it would've added to the impact of him giving it up to Froddo, saying 'he felt the power, the power touched him and he used it, he connected himself to it by his own will, and he still gave it up.'
The same with if they showed what the Ring tried to tempt Sam with, his deepest desire, and all it did was encourage him to finish the task of destroying the ring because all he really wants is to be back home and to tend the Gardens with Rosey Cotton as his wife lol
Ring played itself since it inspired Sam to do 'more', and it may be head-cannon, I cant remember if this was written out or just how I saw the scene but; his hesitancy to hand the ring back was more out of concern for Frodo, after seeing what it did to him, rather than wanting it for himself.

Re: “The Hobbit”: keep in mind when you watch it that Tolkien wrote it as kind of an amusing little tale for his children, an offshoot of the gigantic mythology and world building of Middle Earth that he had been creating for almost 2 decades, all to give backstories to the several languages he’d invented. That “The Hobbit” became so popular after its release in 1937 surprised Tolkien. So, he began thinking of a sequel involving hobbits and even Bilbo Baggins, revolving around that curious little magic ring Bilbo found in Gollum’s cave deep within the Misty Mountains. While a great story in its own right, “The Hobbit” does not have the “heft” of the LOTR trilogy. LOTR and the War of the Ring that you just watched is the final chapter of some 10,000 years of history of Middle Earth. You can get a lot more history (if interested) by reading “The Silmarillion,” published a few years after Tolkien’s death in 1973. And, in case you’re wondering, as good as these movies are… and they are among the best ever made… the books are even better. Several reader polls conducted in the year 2000 (before “Fellowship” was released) asking what was the best work of fiction of the 20th Century had LOTR at the top of those polls. Can you imagine the pressure Director Peter Jackson was under to deliver a good movie adaptation? But, as he was a long-time LOTR fan, he hit it out of the park for both book fans and movie critics. “The Return of the King” won 11 Oscars, every category in which it was nominated (a “clean sweep”), and tied for the most Oscars ever awarded to a film. It also was only the 2nd film to surpass $1 billion at the box office worldwide, “Titanic” being the first movie to accomplish that. Enjoyed your reaction, bro. If you DIDN’T shed a few tears on this one, you wouldn’t be human.

Tolkien worked extremely hard on constructing the world of Middle-Earth there's an abundance of his works that read more like history notes than stories. He was friends with C. S. Lewis but apparently thought that Narnia was put together in a slapdash way. The very epic way Tolkien wrote propelled fantasy stories up from children's stories into adult literature and spawned not only other fantasy novels thereafter, but also Dungeons & Dragons and arguably massive video games such as World of Warcraft. I read the Hunger Games series however felt no urge to see the movies (as you said, child murder is a bit of a change from high fantasy). If you have room on your list I would suggest the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, good movie which walks the line between characters that feel real and situations that feel completely over the top.

At 11:56 you say, "No one cares..." Peter Jackson & Co. have made a wonderful movie, but one of their principal failings is their treatment of Denethor. Don't get me wrong; John Noble gives a wonderful performance--there's a reason why you see his face so often in close-up. But the Denethor of the book is a much more nuanced character, a strong, capable ruler overcome by despair. In the movie, Gandalf takes over the defense of the city because its ruler has abandoned his post. In the book, Denethor feels such remorse when the body of Faramir is brought back from the battle that he will not move from his son's side, hoping to hear some last word from Faramir before he dies.

Of course, I read all the books starting with The Hobbit which Tolkien wrote for his kids as "a children's book". Your fun fact for this movie - straight from New Zealand: The armies were cast mostly from the New Zealand National Guard. Made sense given their numbers and training in military maneuvers. They enthusiastically agreed and saw this as a fun opportunity to 'play' or 'practice' their skills. The first couple of shoots in battle scenes, the National Guard came out fierce! Even the ones that were supposed to 'die'... Peter Jackson stopped the shoot. Calmly walked over to the cast and paused. Everyone was dead silent waiting to hear what he had to say. He hung his head down in thought and raised it up again to address the National Guard and said something along the lines of "Ok guys, I'm only going to say this once. I appreciate your guys' enthusiasm but please stop beating the sh*t out of my actors!"🤣 Apparently that was Peter's way of telling them to tone it down a bit.
