  • You asked for it so now we are checking out THE HUNGER GAMES! It is already making me experience all the emotions... but mostly sadness because of that Rue gut punch. I want Katniss to take everyone off this Earth now and burn down THE CAPITOL. But Haymitch and Peeta are also great standouts! I am excited to see where the sequel goes after that cliff hangar! A nice change of pace after our fantasy marathon! Much Love - Cole

    So the bread was kind of a big deal in the books , both Katniss and Peeta were 11 at the time ( in the games there both 16). Katniss dad died in the mines and her mom fell into a depression episode and would do nothing, so the food run out and Katniss had to find a way to feed her family because they had not eaten days, but had no luck. So in the post she had given up and she sat there and was like let me wait for death, Peeta saw her and burnt the beard on purpose to give it to her, knowing his mom was going to beat him for burning the beard. That kindness gave Katniss hope and renovated her and she started hunting, so she saw Peeta as good, someone who saved her family, so she had a soft spot for him but she was quiet and reserved in the start because she want in with the mind i have to ki** who ever is reaped, her first thought when they called his name is " no not him anyone but him". Also that the deal with her relationship with her mom, she's cold with her because when she was 11 she could not rely on her mom in the hardest time for the family, Katniss had to become the provider at 11 and never stop because she could not trust her mom to take care of her and Prim.

      I came to say this but you did it for me. good job. Only detail you left out that I was going to mention was about signing up for extra food. The reaping system is set up so that you can add your name one extra time for each member of your family to get extra food for your family but you have to be eligible to join the games before you can do that so she was too young to get the extra food.
      Since I mentioned the food system I'll just add that the entries are cumulative. So Katniss' first year her name was in 4 times. 1 for being 12 and 3 extra for the extra food. Then the next year she has those 4 plus the new entries for more extra food and a fresh entry for the fresh year. If you don't take the extra food you still get more entries as you age theoretically so the older teenagers are more likely to be chosen.

    • @ptitepeluche05
      @ptitepeluche05 Před měsícem +27

      I'll just add that the next day when Katniss saw Peeta at school, he had a black eye and a bruised cheek. She wanted to thank him but didn't know how (they're both 11 years old at that point). Then she saw a dandelion and picked it up. It reminded her of spring coming and her father teaching her which plant she could eat and how to hunt. This gave her hope and to this day, Peeta represents hope to her. She refers to him as "the dandelion in the spring". Also, Katniss really has a hard time understanding the concept of someone being nice and not expecting anything in return. That's why every time Peeta does or says something before the game, she keeps thinking "it's a strategy, he's up to something, surely he wants to kill me".

    The dog things were so creepy in the books compared to the movies. Each one resembled a tribute who had died in that year's Games, wearing a collar marked with the district number, and they had human eyes. The resemblance was so strong that Peeta thought they had been made using the dead tributes' real eyes.

    The three-finger salute is a District 12 tradition - representing goodbye, admiration, and unity. The crowd used the three-finger salute to say goodbye to Katniss when she volunteered and show their respects. According to Katniss (in the book), this gesture was old and rarely used by this point, so you can think about the meaning of everyone in the crowd doing that when Katniss volunteered.

      The thing is, Katniss would not have won without Peeta, and Peeta would not have won without Katniss. They both saved each other's life multiple times. People have a hard time to see it because Peeta is the reverse of classic YA male protagonist. He's not brown-haired, he's not mean to the girl, he's not a fighter. People seem to think that a man being nice is somehow a weakness... It's kind of crazy (and scary) when you think about it.

    So glad you enjoyed this movie. I'll help answer a few questions that you had.
    1). When the gamemaker changed the rules they never intended to keep their word on it. It was purely meant to maximize the lover angle. They figured that it was a win-win for them either way because the only two teams left were district 12 and district 2. If district 2 won they knew that those tributes were trained to put killing over comradery. If Peeta and Katniss won they thought they'd go along with a Romeo and Juliet angle for the sake of the show. The capital completely underestimated their rebellious nature and comradery.
    2). Peeta's name is actually a reference to him being a bakers son because its a silly spelling of "pita bread." Also, in the book when Katniss blew up the supplies the sound of the explosion burst her left ear drum; that's why you hear the sound get muffled in that scene. So for the rest of the game she was basically in pain and lopsided with her hearing which makes it even more incredible that they won. Also in the book Peeta's wound wasn't actually healable so they had to amputate it and for the rest of the series he had a prosthetic. Obviously that would've been too much effort and budget for the movies so they let it heal.
    3). The reason Katniss missed the first arrow during her evaluation is because it was completely different from the one she uses back home, so she misjudged the angle and draw weight needed to land the shot. But she immediately adapted and landed the others, which just goes to her mastery.
    4). When Cato says that he's dead anyway, he wasn't exactly referring to the fact that he volunteered for the games. It goes back to what Peeta said about not wanting to be a piece in their game and to still be himself. Basically what Cato was referring to was a metaphorical death, where he was basically raised to be a tool for the capital to use. Then after he won he wouldn't be free like he was promised, but instead turned into a mentor who would then be manipulated into being part of the system and cycle of death. Victors are also often pimped out to Capital citizens if they are deemed attractive enough, so that was another possible fate for him if he won. Fortunately, because district 12 went with the star-crossed lover angle, Peeta and Katniss were saved from that fate.

      Donald Sutherland really brought the character of Snow to life. It’s evident in the later movies when they give him additional screen time and he makes Snow a real presence. Even more so than the books did. I firmly belief that it was his portrayal that influenced Suzanne Collins to write the prequel book that was about snow.
      Fun fact - When Donald Sutherland received the script for the movie (which btw he kinda got by accident, as he wasn’t initially considered for the role) he loved it so much he wrote a letter to Gary Ross (or someone else involved) with the title “Letters from the rose Garden” - iconic.

    46:22 "And we haven't cared about anyone else dying in the Hunger Games"
    When I watch reactions, a lot of people hate Cato and the other more sadistic Tributes and root for their deaths, or immediately latch on to Katniss (and maybe Peeta) as someone they sympathise with more simply because we see things through their eyes. That always makes me really appreciate what Susanne Collins did when she wrote these books. At the start, everyone watching the movie is talking about how crazy it is that everyone watches the broadcast at all times, placing bets and being invested etc. By the time Glimmer is dead, a lot of reactors say that they do not feel bad for her. Because she's a bad person, and hellbent on killing, and she's a murderer, right? But she's a kid - one of the kids in the richer Districts that is raised from birth to expect death, to train to kill, to entertain the masses with murdering other children. Their parents enrol them in that training before the children have a chance to start thinking rationally. Glimmer, Cato, that little group is 100% a product of the world the Capitol has built, where this is normal. If you were raised that way, I honestly believe there are two options - you either wouldn't have survived to this point (truly wouldn't a child go insane), or you lean into the madness to survive. That's life for the kids in the higher Districts. In the lower Districts, there is no money, no training to fight and barely an education, no nutritious food, no medicine - every day is a struggle. The children are desperate, raised for slaughter at the hands of the richer kids in the Games (99% of the time, that's the outcome). I think the book and the movie replicate the experience really well - when someone starts to root for who should live, and who should die. You stop paying attention to the fact that none of these kids should be in this situation at all. Panem.

      It's similar in Game of Thrones. People start cheering for Dany & by the end just said "well she went through so much & she is anti slavery so it's Westeros' fault they don't like her, Kings Landing fell for Cersei's lies so they deserve to die so the wheel can be broken". Nope she was chronically solving her problems with fire and blood & the wheel was just going to have her on top, as more of the same. Having dragons is cool & you might be a special and important character but that doesn't default to a GOOD moral character.

    Hi Cole! Great reaction as always. Congrats on recognising the fact that Haymitch's PTSD regarding his own games is what fucked him up and why he drinks so much. There's a little more to it than that. Haymitch won his games by hiding until everyone else but one person was dead and then killed the last one by using the force field at the edge of the arena to deflect his foe's own axe back against them. The Capitol didn't like how he'd won and executed his entire family. He's also forced to be a mentor because he won and has watched all these kids from 12 die every year. No wonder he's so messed up. But he's a good guy. He got into the mentoring when he realised that Katniss and Peeta might stand a chance of winning. He wouldn't be alone as a mentor anymore if one of them won. He also saw Katniss' rebellious streak. That's why he straightened himself up.
    In my opinion the next movie is the best of the franchise. They lose their way a little in the final two when compared to the book, but they're still decent movies. However, the next one is amazing and I'm sure you'll love it! ❤

    Great video! But what you need to understand about Cato and the careers is that they were basically brainwashed since birth to be ruthless killers, to believe their only purpose was to bring pride to their district through volunteering in the Hunger Games. In that way, they were victims of the Capitol too. I believe that's what Cato meant by "I'm dead already. . . I always was, but I didn't know it until now." They were never given the chance to be anything other than the monsters they became, and that's tragic too.

    Something I notice a lot in these reactions and also In my own experience reading the books over a decade ago is that it's easy to not feel empathy for the Career pack (district 1&2 tributes) because of how ruthless they play the game and the fact that they volunteer but when you really take a step back and think, you realize they aren't the real villains. At the end of the day they are just kids and on top of that they have been groomed since birth to become these vicious warriors. It has been instilled in, this is all they know. Are they cruel, for sure! But when you grow up being told you are the best, being conditioned for these games. Brought up to think emotion is weakness and to be a winner you have the be brutal how else are you supposed to behave? When Cato says at the end "I'm dead anyways, I always was right? I didn't know that until now" I think that's him finally realizing for the first time that he fought this hard for nothing, it wasn't his game to win. It had never occurred to him before that losing could ever be a possibility because of he was raised to be a winner. I also believe Cato is coming to terms with the fact that he has always been a pawn in the capitols game. It didn't matter how hard he trained or how hard he fought because at the end of the day, it's a tv show and Katniss & Peeta being final two makes for a better storyline than him winning. The tributes of district 1&2 are essentially breed to be mindless killing machines for The Hunger Games. You really can't fault any of those kids for how they conducted themselves in the games because without the capitols stronghold over the districts none of them would be in that position to begin with.

    For context : the monster dogs at the ending (mutts) tore up Peeta’s leg bad before he could climb up the Cornucopia that’s why Cato’s beaten up state managed to headlock him. The mutts chewed Cato up until morning coz Katniss used her last arrow as tourniquet for Peeta’s leg and was also dark she couldn’t really see where Cato was. When Cato was visible enough Peeta asked Katniss to use the arrow on Cato not only to give him mercy but also to end the game and declare them winners, Peeta was so close to dying of blood loss. Katniss didn’t need to do anything anymore she already won but she refused to let Peeta die and be stuck in that arena with him for the rest of her life thinking back of how she could have saved him. Peeta ended up losing his leg. So from this point onwards, Peeta is an amputee. The movies didn’t include that detail and was one of the dirty things they did to Peeta’s character. Him having a prosthetic leg would explain some of the things that happens in the coming movies.

      Peeta also had probably had a fever and was septic from the cut & infection in his leg plus was not eating as well as someone like Cato that had supplies for much of the games. Peeta might have gotten some medicine but the toll on his body wasn't magically repaired. It's like people that don't understand Jaime, who was sitting tied & barely getting anything to keep him alive while imprisoned, still was able to hold his own a bit against Brienne (who needed him to stay alive so also had to be careful) due to his skill & drive to escape but still lost even though he was one of not the best swordsman in the country.

    It always makes me a bit sad that the movie did not clarify well enough that Peeta wasn't helping the careers. He was actually trying to help Katniss (for example, he recognized her traps, so he pointed them in the opposite direction). When they finally stumble upon her, he can't do much, but he suggest they wait for her to climb down the tree tongive her time in hopes she comes up with something. And, if I don't remember badly, he even fights Cato after the trackerjacket attack so that she can escape and that's how he gets his leg injury. They also downplay a bit how key he really was in people liking Katniss :(

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Před měsícem +17

      Exactly! Like the only reason the careers found Katniss is because of the fire that was started, which was to bring the tributes together. I think that shows how well Peeta was doing at leading them away from Katniss because the game makers had to intervene to force them together.
      Also you’re right, Peeta runs back and Katniss is sitting there dazed with tracker jackers and Peeta grabs her and pulls her up and shoves her telling her to run, then he turns around and fights Cato and that’s why he’s so badly injured. If he didn’t do that Katniss would definitely be dead.
      The movies also make it look like Peeta just never got sponsors since he wasn’t likeable, but it was because Haymitch deliberately never sent Peeta sponsors even when dying, because Haymitch and Peeta made a plan for Katniss to win, so Haymitch used all the sponsors for Katniss instead. Peeta also kept playing the love angle throughout and was was carrying the first half with the cameras on him, which had the audience on a chokehold that badly they announced the two person can win rule.

    (Non movie, but Canon spoiler ahead) You gotta really appreciate Haymitch, and why he is an alcoholic. He won the second quarter quell at 16 y/o. Every 25 years, there is a special rule set applied to the Games. 25 years - the districts chose their own tributes, not by reaping a name from a bowl. Haymitch won the 50th HGs, the QQ rule was instead of 24 tributes (1 B and G from each District) it was doubled. 48 Tributes, 2 B and 2 Gs from each. Haymitch ended up winning by unintentionally exploiting a "flaw" in the arena's barrier design. When something hits it, it ricochets, think forcefield. He learned this from throwing rocks off a cliff. Later down the road, he and a girl from D1 were the only two left. She had an axe and was basically in the process of hacking out his inner organs. In self defense he had stabbed out one of her eyes. She was in pursuit of him at the said cliff from before. She throws the axe, he ducks, axe hits shield and bounces back and lodged itself in her head. He won. But Snow, saw this as making the Captiol look foolish and "Beatable" so as punishment for his act of "defiance" Snow had Haymitch's Mom, Brother, and Girlfriend executed 2 weeks after he won the games. That alone ...
    Add to it, as the only living Victor for D12, he became the ONLY mentor for District 12 tributes started from s51 to 74 (The one Katniss volunteered for). Thats 23 Hunger Games. 23 years he had to meet, mentor and watch a boy and girl die. He watched 64 children die. When he was as young as 17 and that was after being in the games himself. The odds that he knew some of the tributes over the years, esp when he was still a kid himself were likely. And as he got older, the chances that the reaped children were kids of people he grew up with is also possible. Every year being brought back into the epicenter of the cause of all the trauma, Doing this year after year, alcoholism is def. understandable.

  • @orphanedhanyou
    @orphanedhanyou Před 19 dny +3

    Haymitch told Katniss & Peeta to hide their best skills so the other tributes would know what was coming in the game or be able to prepare. That's why Katniss told Peeta it didn't matter in his case, to go ahead and show his strength, because the tributes were looking at him like he would be one of the first on their kill list & he needed to show them he wasn't an easy target & that there was more to him than they thought to give him an edge. For Katniss she still tried to hide her skill (her edge is being stealthy & survival moreso than Peeta so I think it's way more important she come off as just another scrawny girl) so she never trained with the capital made bows so she went into her evaluation with no feel for the tension or strength of the bow. She is used to homemade bows. In the books she took a couple of shots before she hit the bullseye and that is still remarkable for a note she isn't familiar with. Similar to a gun, you have to sight it in, learn how that individual gun pulls, how much it kicks, & how to compensate - even if you are a great marksman you don't magically get a bullseye with a brand new weapon you have never used the FIRST try.

What this movie doesn't show is when Peeta is telling her to go, he fights Kato and is cut with a sword in the leg really deep. He helps her with where to shoot her arrow at Kato. He is always using his brain to protect Katniss. Petta is the GOAT along with Katniss. Please read the books.

    Katniss is one of my favorite characters of all time. She has flaws, but they’re not offputting enough to make her unlikeable. She has impressive talents and skills, but these are balanced by her weaknesses. No one can accuse her of being a “Mary Sue”. An interesting difference between the books versus movies: Katniss is very reserved and seems “cold,” but she has anger management issues. She has explosive fits of rage where she releases her pent-up feelings of powerlessness, resentment, and hatred for the Capitol. We see one particular explosion when she attacked Peeta, because she thought he was using her. She didn’t know his feelings were real. In the book, she threw a fit in her room the first night they arrived, making a huge mess. Katniss never agreed with the Hunger Games, but she didn’t want to start a rebellion. She just wanted to protect her family.
    One thing I wish they didn’t gloss over in this film: the slaves in the background. Most Reactors don’t notice them, or understand what they are. The Capitol punishes all dissenters, traitors, and suspected rebels with execution OR making them “Avoxes.” Their tongues are cut out and they’re forced to serve the Capitol. No one is allowed to speak to them or acknowledge them in any way. It’s not really a spoiler, but the films don’t address this until Mockingjay Part One. Avoxes can be seen in the background in The Hunger Games, and Catching Fire.

    In the books during the food blast Katniss goes deaf in one ear, and during the “boss round” with the dogs Peeta’s leg gets so mangled they have to amputate and give him a kinda robotic leg. I loved the relationship with Rue and Katniss because Katniss looked at Rue like she was Prim because they are the same age. During the games Katniss kept comparing them and she knew she made the right choice by volunteering. The books are really good and really dark. Definitely worth the read if your interested.

      not having him loose his leg is a choice I don't mind because in the book Katniss doesn't see him & find out until their final interview and it would slow the pace of the ending which I think was just right for film - plus as we have established the audience of today is pretty dumb and unsure they would be able to understand the medication tech was so high in the capitol vs the districts that Peeta would be fine & loosing a leg never really comes up again as an issue for the plot vs "how did a guy that lost his leg do xyz in the next films i don't get it".

    For a bit more background on Katniss and Peta. Her dad died in a terrible accident in the coal mines when she was 11. After that, her mom broke down and mentally checked out, so Katniss had to help the family survive (hence why her relationship with her mom is so strained).
    She was trying to sell a few things to get a bit of food on the black market because they were on the edge of starving. Peta had it a bit better and grew up in a slightly better part of District 12, (but still pretty impoverished, as District 12 is the poorest district). His family owned a bakery. He knew Katniss' situation when he caught her looking at the bread he was making. He burnt it on purpose, even though he knew it would mean a beating. He knew his mom would make him toss it, so he ensured Katniss got it.
    It was a big turning point for her, at that time she began to realize she had what she needed and could hunt to survive. Her dad had taught her to hunt. But she never liked feeling that she owed Peta for his act of kindness and what it cost him. Now, they might have to kill each other.
    When you read her internal monologue you see that she's not actually as cold as she comes across. She's just very focused on survival and practicalities. Life forced her into that.
    Her mom is a healer and Katniss has literally watched her try to help people dying from starvation in front of them. It's dier where she lives. That also puts the party she attends in the capitol into context. Drinks to make you vomit so you can eat more and get around to sampling all of the delicacies? When she has watched children starve to death in front of her in District 12? The system in a nutshell.

    Katniss missed her first shot with the Capitol bow because she has never shot with this kind of bow and these kinds of arrows; Haymitch told her and Peeta not to show off their strengths during training, because he didn't want the other tributes to know what they were capable of and put targets on their backs. So this is the first time she has handled a bow and a set of arrows there were not made of wood. Each tesserae equal to 1 year worth of grains and oil. That's why gale mention his name was in the ballot 42 times because he is the one bringing food and money for his family. That's also why Katniss tell Primrose not to take food from the Capitole. Having your name once per year is already bad, imagine having, like Katniss who took 3 tesserae per year from age 12 having 3x her name in the ballot.... It's alot... 3:22 LOL Do you know the quote from Shawshank Redemption "It's safe to say that I liked Andy from the start"?
    Well it's safe to say I didn't like Gale right from the start.. LOL
    Just my opinion don't come at me for it! lol
    17:42 Since you commented so much about it here it is..
    Katniss is in survival mood 24/7 since childhood and mainly since her dad passed and her mom went into a funk due to greave and she was left to be the sole caregiver of the house.. she's a mom, a dad and a very clever hunter she's a survivor that's why she dealt pretty well with the games mood because she's already in that phase on a daily bases!
    Gale very obviously likes her but they never pursued a relationship due to Katniss not having the mentality to think about love, marriage and absurdly having kids in a world like that you get it? That's why she's always in "let's get this done and over with and be quick and clever about it" mood.
    19:34 I LOVE THAT SCENE! Katniss liked it and was grateful too! but no one talks about it much!
    Here Katniss was in the lowest of all very hungry and helpless literally on the brink of dying and giving up, that was sometime after her dad died, Peeta here saw her, as we all know and you'll come to know for sure that Peeta is TOO NICE to be true! very kind soul, he wanted to help her, his family owns the bakery, he burnt the bread a bit on purpose to have an excuse to go feed it to the pigs outside in order to give some to Kat and that was the first food she gets in daaaaays, his mom yelled at him and hit him for it but he' s just so kind to care he'd have done it even if he didn't like Katniss from afar for years!
    20:50 YES! Haymitch is drinking his sorrows away.. note he's won this once and his year was one of/if not the worst of years, means he killed people, kids.. The games destroyed his life. He's suffered for years no end while watching year after year his two tributes dying and he could do nothing to prevent it.. kids like Rue he mentored.. he hated to get attached to them then watching them die.. There was no winners in D 12 after Haymitch..
    BUT! He saw a spunk within Katniss and a potential to really get out of this alive and really liked Peeta's true self and kindness that's why he focused with time and even started to decline liquor like you saw while talking with them!
    21:40 She just needed a tryout shot with that new fine bow! she's used to the aim of her handmade wooden bow.
    24:40 Well that's right they're competing against each other eventually BUT that's not the case here! Peeta is a good man to the very end kind of person.. he just wanted to strategize on his own away from Katniss judge-y eyes how to protect himself and when/if it came to it, her. He was being honest when thinking he had low chances of surviving.. Katniss is waaay quicker on her feet that he is!
    28:28 ALTHOUGH it would work like a charm as a strategy.. Peeta was being TOO honest right there!
    43:05 It is! See..
    The Capitol uses endless kinds of weapons and spreads fear to maintain control over the Districts.
    Long before the events of the movies, when the initial war that led to the Capitol being in power started, the one mentioned in the reaping, The capitol genetically engineered animals to do its bidding. They called them muttations like the weird dogs you see at the end killing Kato which btw in the book the were engineered to have the fallen tributes features and eyes!
    Anyhow This muttations included a lot of stuff amongst them were the jabberjays.
    They were only males and had the ability to remember and repeat human speech.
    The Capitol would release them in the rebel camps to collect information. That was quite effective until the rebels caught on, using the jabberjays to their favor by leaking false information. That led the Capitol to abandon them as they became useless, and since they were all males, the capitol officials thought that with time the species would die out.
    BUT.. the Capitol underestimated them! Instead of dying out they mated with female mockingbirds, creating a new species called mockingjays. That's the symbol of it. People like the old lady who gave it to Katniss used to like them, they meant new hope, striving despite of the circumstances, turning bad situations in your favor; rebellion.
    The Mockingjays were also able to mimic as well, but only human tones though not actual speech. So people used song patterns and tones to pass messages and share information through codes like Rue showing Katniss here that she used to sing to mockingjays to tell the other people in District 11 that it was time for the work day to end and such.
    Katniss as described in the books was a very good singer, she got it from her father, and the Mockingjays liked listening to songs and were able to mimic the melodies.

    The reason she missed with the bow isn't because it felt different, the curve, the stiffness, ect. Her handmade bow vs. a bow made by the Capitol would be very different in control, so she would have to adjust to the difference.

    I wouldn't say Haymitch was traumatized from what he had to do. He's the only living member of district 12s winner's. He had to mentor kids every year since with no Victor.

      He’s traumatized by both. Snow had his family & girlfriend killed after he won the Games (not a spoiler). Surviving the Games, having his family killed, then having to mentor kids for more than 20 years, watching them die… so much trauma. No wonder he drinks.

    I'm so glad I caught this notification Cole! Watching the beginning of your reaction I am reminded how horrified I had felt when I first learned what this movie is about. I went in blind not knowing anything about this movie when we watched this in the theaters, my husband loved it, great storyline he said and told me it was three books! I never read them, because he loved the movie, we watched all four of them, because my husband liked it that much and I was left wanting to know how will Katniss deal with it in the next movie? The third movie was split into two parts. Man, I remember Rue, poor dear didn't have a chance out there in the wild for so long. LOL, you know, that was the only time I cheered for Katniss when she aimed the arrow at the people who were not paying attention to her next aim, and it was good enough to make them all look then she bowed and thanked them for their consideration! Ha! I liked that part! Stanley Tucci as Flickerman, that was the second time I've seen him in the movies! Yes, President Snow is not happy about the outcome. Peeta grew on me eventually. Cole, watching you react to this movie help me understand what I couldn't remember about this movie, but I am caught up with it now. Catching Fire is next! Looking forward to watching that! Peace. ☮

    Hey Cole! Glad u r doing this franchise, it's one of my favorites. I didn't read all the comments, but did read some. Out of the ones I read, I didn't see any history from the books covered. Panem, the world of The Hunger Games, is the USA after natural disasters, famine & wars. The country was in chaos until people got together wanting to establish a sense of order. A governing body was created which became the Capitol. It is situated in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado & is only accessible by the train Katniss & Peeta were on or an airship. There were 13 Districts. Each District provided either a natural resource/needed commodity. The Capitol was supposed to evenly distribute stuff to the Districts, but instead kept most of it for themselves. Angered by this, the Districts rebelled. @ the head of the rebellion was District 13. This was a military District that believed they could run Panem better than the Capitol. As we know, the rebellion was crushed & District 13 was leveled, so now there's only 12 Districts & The Hunger Games were created as punishment. The Capitol also kept the Districts separated so they couldn't come together to rebel again, hence the electrified fences. As years went on, they stopped sending electricity to the outlying Districts, & would only electrify them during the time of the Reaping. That is how Katniss is able to sneak of into the woods in order to hunt. The further u get from the Capitol the poorer the Districts. Katniss & Peeta's District 12 is coalmining so might be somewhere around Virginia/whereever else they mine for coal in the eastern US. Rue & Thresh's District 11 is agricultural. They provide grain, fruit, vegetables & nuts. Rue would climb the fruit trees, that's how she's such a good climber. The Hunger Games arena is changed every year. Katniss was lucky to end up in a forest setting. When Katniss missed on her 1st shot @ her evaluation, it was because she was a bit nervous but mainly she wasn't used to the weight of the metal bow & arrows. She hadn't touched the bow & arrows since getting to the Capitol because she didn't want to reveal her skill. Alright let's talk about "Mutts", they are genetically mutated creatures created by the Capitol. Those "pit bulls" are one type, & are described very differently in the book. The Tracker Jackers are called that because once u anger them they can continuously track u until u hide your scent by jumping into water/something & their stings can jack u up. I will tell u about how the Mocking Jay came about after the next movie. Ok, @ this time, the love triangle that develops between Gale, Katniss & Peeta is like this. Gale has feelings for Katniss, but Katniss just thinks of him as her best friend & hunting buddy. I personally think, Gale's whole speech about running away together before they went to the Reaping stems from it being his last one because he is 18. Peeta actually does have a huge crush on Katniss. Katniss doesn't know how she feels about either one, although she did feel something that last kiss she gave Peeta in the cave. But, being in survival mode, she pushed those feelings aside & convinced herself that they were only pretending for the show. About Haymitch's callousness & drunken state in the beginning. He watched 2 tributes from his District die every year for 23yrs so he decided to not get attached. With Katniss, he saw the possibility of having a tribute/ both tributes live so he cut back on the drinking & started working the sponsors. There's something I want to mention from the books, Katniss' respect & care towards Rue before & after her death got District 11 to sponsor a care package in it was real bread. That had never been done before because supposedly Districts weren't suppose to do that. In the beginning when Gale gave her a real bread roll & she was excited, it's because the "flour" given to them as part of there rations is course & makes these dry, hard biscuits, something akin to hardtack. The only place to receive real flour is the bakery. I can't think of anything else I want to add. Anyway, this was a great reaction. Waiting for the next.😊👍

    I was never into YA, but this is just a good series with unique characters and really solid world building. It does what sci-fi is supposed to de by holding a mirror up to society and asking questions. And I love that Peeta and Katniss are so different from what we usually see in stories!

  • @saturated3821
    @saturated3821 Před 10 dny

    Assuming Haymitch has been a mentor for all tributes since he won the 50th Hunger Games, that's 46 kids he's had to try and prepare just to watch them all die. No wonder he tries to keep a distance. The winners definitely do not get off the hook, they are hopelessly entangled with the Capitol for the rest of their lives.

    • @BethanyWaler
