So today I'll be taking my final step into the land Middle-Earth and follow the quest of Hobbits, Humans, Elves, and Dwarves for a reaction to the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King. Yes, this is my first time watching this movie. After many years of waving it off as some overhyped project I can truly understand why so many people love it. I hope you enjoy my reaction of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Eowyn & Farsmir’s story was not forced in the book; it was beautiful & believable

When Elrond delivers the sword, you can see Aragorn's last doubts about his inheritance. But the sentence in elvish is a quote from Aragorn's mother. I think this sentence was the last spark to convince Aragorn. Here is the background knowledge from the books: Aragorn was raised in Rivendell, as all Chieftains of the Dunedain. His given name was Estel, which means "hope" in Quenya. It was said that his mother, Gilraen, knew some of his destiny, as she had the gift of foresight. When Elrond revealed his true name and lineage to him, Aragorn was to set out into the world to fight Sauron's evil for many decades. When he came to bid farewell to his mother, her last words to him were the same words they spoke now :
Onen i-estel Edain. U-chebin estel anim.
"I give hope (Estel, her son) to men. I keep none for myself."
2:05:00 that’s the failsafe of the ring. It will corrupt anyone who will try to destroy it. Nobody could’ve intentionally destroyed the ring. It took a fight between Frodo and Gollum to be cast into the fire.
Sam and Rosie go on to have 13 beautiful Hobbit children together! One of their daughters later marries Pippin's son, whom he named Faramir 🥰
Awwww. I'd kill to have an adaptation where we just see the Hobits just living their lives.

Explanation of the Stewards of Gondor: Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand with the sword of Elendil, his father. Isildur, "son of the king," was *not* "son of the king of Gondor." Elendil and his two sons, Isildur and Anarion, escaped from an island kingdom that was sunk like Atlantis. In the escape, their ships were separated. Elendil founded a new kingdom in the north called Arnor. The Shire was part of Arnor. Isildur and his brother Anarion landed in the south and founded Gondor together, becoming joint first kings of Gondor. So Isildur "son of the king" of Arnor was himself already king of Gondor.
The problem is, Elendil never had any more kids, so who inherits his kingdom after he dies if both of his sons already have their own kingdom to run? Anarion died in the same battle as Elendil, so Isildur set things in order for Anarion's son to rule Gondor, then he renounced his claim to authority over Gondor and went to rule Arnor.
A lot of generations passed and a lot of wars happened and some kings weren't so great. The last descendant of Anarion left a Steward in charge of Gondor while going off to war, died in battle, and the people decided they were better off just continuing with the Stewards than trying to find a new king. Meanwhile, the descendants of Isildur continued to rule Arnor. They noticed Gondor lost it's king and offered to take up the throne, as descendants of it's founder, but Gondor said, "no, thanks, your Isildur already gave up your claim to Gondor a long time ago, and kings haven't been so great for us recently." Since this was their attitude, the Stewards took pride in *not* sitting on the throne. Then the Nazgul that would stab Frodo in the future gathered an army from the region of Angmar, made a name for himself as a Witch King, and attacked Arnor. His war completely destroyed the infrastructure and government of Arnor.
The Rangers are all that remains of the army of Arnor, still defending their citizens as best they can without a formal government or tax structure to support and pay them. The kings went into exile, raised in Rivendell to be chieftains of the Rangers while the Stewards continued to rule Gondor for generations. When Aragorn takes the throne, he becomes king of both Gondor and Arnor. He sets things in order for Faramir to take over as Steward and then goes back to restructure Arnor. The two kingdoms are so far apart that the Stewards are still necessary.
Also, before you get too hard on Denethor, he always knew Gondor was the first obstacle in Sauron's way. He also had a Palantir (the "crystal ball") and spent years going head to head with Sauron the same way Pippin did, but without needing Gandalf to save him from it. When Pippin saw that Minas Tirith was where Sauron was headed, he was literally seeing into Sauron's mind, while Sauron was looking into his, trying to find information about the Ring. Denethor did this for years without letting Sauron get the upper hand, trying to fight Sauron mentally and see his plans. It slowly wore down Denethor's mental health.

There are some incredibly evocative scenes in this movie. The Charge of the Rohirrim is among my favorite scenes ever. As for your tears, listen to Gandalf talking to the Hobbits at the harbor. 😉

Smeagol and Deagol were cousins. S calling D "my love" is just a British figure of speech. (Gollum calls Smeagol "my love" as well, for example.)
You mean like how some people thing Gandalf saying “Fly you fools” was him saying to take the eagles when it was really just him saying “RUN BITCH RUUUUUUUN!”
We should probably clarify, re that kind of speech: it's a rural cliche - not really used anymore
And as a very conservative Catholic, Tolkien would certainly not have included a gay couple (intentionally, that is - he never foresaw the way people try to read things into Frodo & Sam or even Fingon & Maedhros)

That the witch king could not be killed by a man came from a profecy by Glorfindel that he WOULD not be killed by a man.
The witch-king had a magical defense so that anyone who stuck him would be poisoned and the weapon would be broken instantly. Mary used an elfish dagger to destroy his defense and then Eowyn killed him.

Taking this journey with you was really great! I enjoyed the reflections between the sections of the movie. Usually when they are all at the end, I end up not watching them, so that's a great way to make sure more people actually listen to your thoughts and ideas :) Also, it's very enjoyable to watch reactors who understand so much just from the first watch. I'm sure Howard Shore was aware that the "rings motif" is reminiscent of The Warsaw Concerto.
Given the involvement of Emiliana Torrini he probably intentionally took the "hobbit motif" from her song Serenade.
Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth to advise and encourage the people to defeat Sauron, not to use his own abilities to do it for them. It was time for humans to come into their own and they could only do that by uniting and defeating the common enemy, bringing order and peace out of the lawlessness and chaos of Sauron's minions. They had to rise above even their own belief of what they were capable of doing to emerge ready to take over the stewardship of Middle Earth. By the way, two things happen toward the end of this movie that no one seems to notice. Pippin tells Merry on the battlefield, 'I'm going to look after you', when it has always been the other way around. Pippin has grown up. Later, Frodo says to Sam, 'I'm glad to be with you, Sam Gamgee...' when always before he'd said, 'I'm glad to have you with me...' He acknowledges Sam as not just an equal, but the one who got him through this god-awful time.
I think you maybe missed the reoccuring theme of mercy - what Gandalf advised Frodo on when he first revealed Gollum was on his trail, and why Aragorn stopped Theoden from killing wormtongue. This is what separates the heroes from being as ruthless as their enemies and now stooping as low.
Samwise, the friend everyone needs in their life.
Gandalf is not allowed to reveal his power. He can against the Balrog because it’s basically an angel and Demon fighting each other. The movies open a whole can of worms of problems. Love them but the books are vastly superior

The death of Saruman was only in the extended version, a decision that greatly annoyed Christopher Lee and remains pretty incomprehensible to me - Jackson had to cut something to get the running time short enough to force in an extra showing per day in cinemas, but that scene? Was important! Anyway, I'm glad you watched the extended version of ROTK just for that scene.
Thanks! I recently looked at the behind the scenes of that moment. I realized how much of a badass Sir Christopher Lee was when he gave his input on how someone should sound when getting stabbed in the back. You could just tell that he had seen or most likely had done something like this during his service in the army.

You've probably heard this about a great many things regarding the books, but the Faramir/Eowyn was deeply developed in the books, and the Aragorn/Eowyn romance was contrived for the movies. I think it works with Faramyn, but I've read the books.
Getting friend-zoned by Aragorn would be a tragedy.
Only the deepest and most ardent respect for those who cry during LotR! I honestly don't jive with reaction videos where they _don't_ cry LOL "I'm glad to be with you, Sam, here at the end of all things" ALWAYS gets me, too - EVERY time! (And then I just spend the whole rest of the movie crying.)
Regarding Aragorn urging Théoden to spare Gríma (and ignoring the books for a moment), I honestly think this is poor storytelling on the movies' part. Saruman had been planning this attack for YEARS, and exploiting the culvert's weakness was CRUCIAL to his attack on Helm's Deep. Even in the movie verse, it simply isn't logical to have Gríma come in at the last second - even as Saruman is preparing the bomb and his army is marching out - to convey the information necessary to make those very crucial preparations. The only way for this sequence to make sense is to treat the voiceover as an incident from the past, and assume Gríma had already conveyed all of this information to Saruman long before Théoden spared him.
But even more so, I think it's important to remember one of the most crucial tenets of Tolkien's writing:
"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."
Not only is sparing Gríma the just and noble thing to do, the action had many far-reaching ripple effects - including things that were beneficial to those opposing Sauron (such as drawing his eye away from Frodo and Sam).
P.S. Hard agree on the Faramir/Éowyn relationship. Some people will try to argue it's more developed in the books, but... nah. Tolkien just didn't do much romance, and that's fine. And yeah, Sam doesn't leave in the books.

I haven't seen anyone on this comments page fill him in on Gondor's history - or the differences between book-Denethor and film-Denethor. Long story short, there wasn't a beef between Gondor and Rohan, in fact they'd been rescuing each other for centuries. And much of Denethor's questionable behavior related to his use of a palantir (and resultant "influence" from Sauron)..
In the books its made clear Smeagol wasn't a good person before the ring.

I don't know about 6,000, but they had just about everyone in New Zealand who owned a riding horse, women included (about half the Rohirrim extras were women in fake beards).
Loved your dissection in between parts of the movies! very rare amongst other reactors to the movie. I understand that you have to, unfortunately, choose to not make a reaction video to The Hobbit movies since it provides an interesting look into Bilbo's adventure few years back (and a few of us are interested to hear your take on the story) but yeah, you must be quite busy! but, but, buttttt, do please watch it whenever you get the chance to, yeah? "Smeagol hates Hobbitses", there are 2 reasons for that - Smeagol and Deagol were Hobbits, but after Deagols death, Smeagol got ran out of Hobbiton and 500 years later Bilbo took the ring, so Gollum knew where to send the riders to recover the ring.
500 yrs with Smeagol/Gollum, 80 yrs with Bilbo but only a year with Frodo, the differences is skin contact - when Smeagol was excommunicated from Hobbiton, no way to get clothes so his contact with the ring gets limited, Bilbo always kept it in his pocket and occasionally touched it for reassurance, but Frodo always had it around his neck touching his skin (apart from the showing at Rivendell and when putting on the Mithril shirt). He was the only one with welts around his neck.
There are three types of Hobbit, Harfoot, Fallohide, and Stoor. When the Hobbits first migrated West he Stoors went South and settled along a river near the Gladden Fields. They were the lowest class of Hobbit, whereas Harfoot was the middle and largest class and the Fallohide were said to have almost an Elven strain. Smeagol was said to have been from the river folk, akin to the fathers of the fathers of the Stoors'. He was, in other words, a long-sundered connection of Hobbits. It's somewhat like the connection between Europeans and the descendants of their early immigrants to the U.S. Smeagol was a creep before he took the ring, but with it he went home and caused so much grief that he was eventually exiled. Bilbo had the ring for 60 years, but was only beginning to feel its effects because he was a good person and had begun his ownership of it by feeling sorry for Gollum and not killing him when he had the chance. Also because Saruman had not yet regained his full power since his defeat in the War of The Last Alliance. Once he was fully restored, the ring was bent on reuniting with him and became much more virulent itself. The ring calls to and is called by evil, but can also turn the powerful (like Gandalf and Galadriel) to evil by leading them to seek ultimate power. Saruman fell prey by studying the lore of the ring, eventually trying to find it for himself because he thought the world would benefit by being run by 'the wise'. It's the downfall of all government.
As to Éowyn & Faramir romance, the movies do a poor job of showing the growth of their love. But I get it. It's already a long movie and this was a B plot that didn't really impact the main plot. The scene where he takes her hand is one of the extended scenes, so the theatric release is even worse with the suddenness. It makes it feel like it happens overnight, but in the books they were both near death and recovering in the Houses of Healing while the army marched on the Black Gate. Plenty of time to fall in love. It's actually one of my favorite romances in literature.
If Grima had been killed, he wouldn't have been there to end Saruman, huh? As Gandalf says, "Even the Wise cannot see all ends". Don't know why this didn't show up in my feed before. Damn Tube.

FWIW Eowyn and Faramir's romance in the books was done SO much better. They, along with Merry and Sam, are in my top 4 favorite characters, so I have to defend them lol.

The Army of the dead were a group of people that dwelled in the mountains long past, but had sworn an oath of allegiance to Gondor to come to their aid when called. When they were called, they never came and so Isildur cursed them never to sleep until they had fulfilled their oath to the king of Gondor. I believe they were called to enter the battle of the Last Alliance, but I could be wrong.
I'm a bit disappointed in the underwhelming reception this video has gotten. This might be my last Lord of the Rings related video 😶

This is such an amazing trilogy! Most definitely my favorite movies.
Something that is not mentioned in the movies, but I think it puts a nice little bow on the series; After Frodo and Bilbo leave, the 3 remaining hobbits have long, happy, adventure filled lives. Merry and Pipin grow old and die in Gondor and are buried next to Aragorn.
Sam becomes the mayor of the Shire and has a bunch of kids. After Rosie dies, Legolas builds a ship and him, Gimli and Sam leave Middle Earth and sail to Valinor.
Sam was granted passage to Valinor because he was, even for a brief while, a Ringbearer. Gimli, the dwarf was granted passage because of his deeds.
As far as I know, it isn't written if Sam and Frodo and the rest of the Fellowship me in the West. But I'd like to believe so.
If you change your mind and watch The Hobbit, don't expect a Lord of The Rings type movie. The book was written as a children's book, so the tone is a little lighter. Its a very fun movie and it gives us so much backstory.
Lord of The Rings, Rings of Power on Amazon Prime. I enjoyed it. The story takes places thousands of years before Frodo's story. It's visually breathtaking.
They had to do a lot of padding on the story line because NOBODY has the rights to ALL of the Tolkien original material. Production had bits and pieces. The same thing happened with THIS movie, there was material that was relevent, but couldn't use because they didn't have the rights .Having said that,
the Second Age is very fuzzy in the book, it is not as detailed as the First or Third. So that gives you a little wiggle room for storyline changes.
It got a little clunky for me a couple of times, it was mostly dumb dialog. But I found the storyline is really interesting and seeing familiar characters is always fun.

I’ve gotta say your lotr reactions have been my favorite, but I don’t think anyone would be offended if you stopped here. The hobbit movies are good movies but can’t live up to the lotr. I hate the views have dropped off on this one but hopefully you get the views back on the next movie you react to!
Unfortunately you're at the mercy of the algorithm, and a lot of other bigger react channels have done the full LOTR/Hobbit movies so the competition is staggering at this point.

@@Daosguard Lol I gotta chase the views. It lets me know that it worth all of the rigorous time I spent editing these videos. If I get more views I can make enough to hire someone else to edit and I can get more vids out in a timely fashion.

Smeagol was not the most upstanding citizen to begin with. He was a sneak and a thief if I remember right. After he killed his cousin Deagol he wasn't welcome in his home village anymore. I've only read the books twice so far so my info might not be completely accurate.
Be assured that in the books that neither Sam nor Frodo *ever* trusted Gollum. The only time they got separated was in the tunnel running from Shelob. What Sam did to rescue Frodo was even more epic in the book.
The hobbits' return to the Shire was quite different in the book as well. It was not the same place they left and they all show their individual character growth when they faced what awaited them at home.
Well, as Gollum he became an indiscriminate killer who probably targeted human babies!

apart from the names of the characters, the ROP series really has nothing to do with tolkien's work , it';s more like a shit fan fiction. The hobbit trilogy is not as good as this one but on it's own it's pretty good, quite enjoyable and gives you a lot more of middle earth
Yeah Eowyn and Faramir's romance is hella forced. It's a biiiiit more fleshed out in the book, but even then not the best execution. Tolkien originally didn't have Arwen as a character and was writing Eowyn to be Aragorn's love interest. But he decided that Aragorn was a bit too lordly for her, so he made the character of Arwen and pushed together Eowyn and Faramir. He openly admitted that he knows he didn't do the best job with her character, and that he didn't have the strongest grasp on writing women. In his defense though, she's *much* better written than a lot of other female characters written by his contemporaries AND in fantasy series that took great inspiration from LotR.
Jackson's The Hobbit doesn't have the same amount of love put into it that LoTR did. Please, please give the animated Hobbit a watch. It's not that long and follows the book much more closely. I'd like to see a reaction, but even if you watch it separately, It is a great way to see a version that follows the book.

On that last bit the series - Don't bother with the series. There's so little Tolkien in it it's not worth watching as LOTR related, and it plain sucked, no matter how you looked at it. Did not watch. Am not sorry. Blech.
