That drum beat breaks thru the darkness, making you feel like a beacon of light in the depths of hell...urging you to keep hacking away, always at just the right time. Beautiful, timeless work. Music is more important then movie quality graphics.
red spiky spheres flying at you, the sound of potions dropping, the cries of blood knights, the sound of attacks missing and the occasional warrior pain sound, the sound of a portal to tristram and griswold greeting you "well wah cannae dü for ye"
the music is so interesting. you can really tell the musicians thought about what hell would sound like... it begins with a deep bass background noise hum and a drum announcing that you are in hell. then there is the creepy oscillatory noise which sounds like some kind of evil engine roaring to life, which then slowwwwwsss down and reverberates in strange echoes and becomes some kind of hiss which transforms into a snare drum beat which together with the flute sounds like the marching band in some kind of war. just the kind of imagery i would expect to see and hear in hell. makes you feel like you're losing your mind. creepy! awesome!
Very good assessment. Considering how the idea of hell, or at least the Evil that resides in it is the very perversion of everything not evil, let alone things that are Holy, this would indeed make sense. For instance, take the twisting of the "baby's wail". Just the idea that you are "walking" in hell, another dimensional plane of existence, but in your same form, seeing things that defy logic, and being in there for quite some time, should challenge your sanity. Here you are trying to hunt down something that hear about, but now know to be very real.. I'd question what I'd be doing down there too. The old original trailer strengthen this idea.
I think the end part of the music is no longer about Hell, but about how the hero is losing their mind. You can hear something akin to sand being poured onto the ground, which indicates "erosion" -- the erosion of sanity.
Oddly enough, the Catacomb level sounds miserable and menacing than this Hell music. Dungeon(in Cathedral), Cave and Hell music sounds very opera like a bunch of human making a ceremony and dark sacrificial ritual. Catacomb is more likely sounds Hell, as I recall, and if you heard it from the beginning you will hear that the sound of death scream like dozen of spirit been stuck, trap, struggling and suffer inside it.

And suddenly my brain is remembering the Blood Knights and Advocates I hadn't thought of in like a decade.

Yea the composer for this sound track is very skilled. Blizzard always had great composers.
