This next detail is from the newspapers at the time so it'a probably exaggerated but supposedly Jack grew up so poor and malnourished that he was barely five feet tall. Bess was, supposedly, almost a foot taller and nearly twice his weight.

Bess looks rather familar... Anyway, some notes from me.
    1. Newgate was on the site of what is today the Central Criminal Court aka 'The Old Bailey'.
    2. Theatre censorship was still a thing until 1968; all plays and theatrical needed to be approved by the Lord Chamberlain's Office. One producer basically managed to convince the Lord Chamberlain that nudity itself wasn't obscene... as long as the naked people were playing statues. Thus giving birth to the Windmill Girls, with a number of well known post-war comedians getting their debuts at the theatre in the process. In the 1960s, theatres wanting to put on controversial works turned themselves into private clubs for the duration. The whole thing got a bit ridiculous at that point and the censorship.
    3. Public executions were still being done after the first part of the London Underground opened.

Then again there's a certain irony that he also once locked a rival's mother in a hut filled with hungry jackals and then set it on fire while they were eating her alive... or maybe he didn't, who knows? If I may make a suggestion of a German criminal turned folk hero: Johannes Bückler or more widely known as "Schinderhannes" (Flaying Hans), John the Scorcher, John the Flayer or the robber of the rhine who managed a couple of impossible escapes and rose to fame by, well flaying every frenchmen he could get his hands on as the Rhineland was during his story once again under hostile occupation by the french.
Among others he was imprisoned in a wooden tower Rapunzel style and managed to vowe one of his guards to slip him a kitchen knife with which he cut a whole through the wall of said tower and somehow managed to get down from it unscathed.
After a couple of more escapes, daring robberies and attacks on frenchmen he assumed a new alias and joined an anti french army, however ended up betrayed and handed over to them instead.
After his fiancée being attained by the french and threatened with public execution he buckled in and gave away 19 of his comrades as well as himself to safe her and was finally executed by guillotine drawing a crowd of 40thousand onlookers that wanted to accompany the last walk of the beloved "butcher of the french"
