I was not expecting the completed roofing to be SO vibrant. When you get used to seeing things faded by time, you just subconsciously think it began that way. Mais regardon-le ! It's so immersive because it gives an accurate look into the past. Ce qui est aussi fou, c'est the time it takes to restore the decorative stone-work! It takes the same meticulous curating as archeology.
I'm legit shocked this channel only has 44k subs as the time of posting this comment. The camera-work and overall presentation is as vibrant as the replaced roofing. Every video beautifully showcases the progress and the heart behind the restoration of this magnificent place.

Absolutely! We count the trucks and artisans each morning to keep our morale up!
It’s amazing the level of craftsmanship and effort it takes for even a tiny piece of the chateau like the pear.
The artisans take incredible care, even on small details which are scarcely visible to the naked eye.
Thank you for preserving this heritage. France has numerous castles, but it is practically impossible to maintain all of them in good condition. I believe we can say that this heritage is no longer exclusively French but belongs to all of humanity.
Correction : it would be quite easy to maintain them, it's just that politicians like macron have been cutting the dedicated budgets.
@@lahire137 You really don't know what you are talking about : there are almost 40 000 châteaux in France, mainly private properties. The State is in charge of the National monuments and former royal residences (e Louvre, Versailles, Chambord, Fontainebleau, Vincennes, Compiègne, Rambouillet, etc, etc, not mentioning the cathedrals, the museums…). Yet, private owners can get some help and money from the State. So, in your opinion, what is the State supposed to do ? Use the public finances and the taxes of the citizens to rebuild private properties ? 40 000 properties ? Well, tell us your "quite easy" solution, and how you'll find the money for everyone 🙂

How fantastic the way he described the pear carving. I'm very artsy and creative but spatially I always wonder how a carver "sees" the carving in a block of material. To me that must take incredible skill. I love that he explains the process in detail. It gives a whole other perspective to how much work goes into each detail of these magnificent structures. ❤

Most of the wood on the 'charpente' as the huge frame is called in french is oak.
Amazing the level of detail in the stonework that most people won't be able to appreciate because it's on the roof.
Another fascinating episode. I wish I could watch an episode per day as they are all so well-produced. Great drone footage and roof shots. These episodes should be on a national TV channel as they are all that good. Wonderful progress too!!

I'm amazed by the number of English and American people committed to renovating Chateaux in France. A lot of them would be left to rot if they couldn't benefit from this generous money and passion supply, the link between cultures and the way you share your project to the world makes France a better place. The best heritage preservation is always a collaboration. You're right that many chateaux in France are being restored by foreigners. But the incredibly skilled artisans working on these buildings are almost always French - we are very proud of them!
It will be one of the most beautiful château in France! What are the plans for the future once the renovation (partially -it’s never finished) completed? Or rather when you can move in?
We live here now in a part of the chateau where the roof is restored. We haven't settled on our plans for Purnon when the restoration is further advanced. Right now our focus is on managing this huge project and sharing the restoration journey with people from around the world.
I can't afford to buy, but I wish you would post on UTube more often.
Thank you for your interest. We post a quick update every day on Instagram and we create videos as often as we can for CZcams. As you can imagine, they take time to put together amidst all our work restoring the chateau and maintaining the park. The next video will be released this Saturday. Enjoy!

What are the long term plans for this building? Will we be able to visit or stay from Australia. Had to laugh at person asking about your bank balance. Thanks for your support and good wishes. We haven't finalised our plans for when we finish (whatever that means!). Right now its just one step at a time and we're thrilled to be sharing the journey with so many people from around the world.

I’ve just watched all your videos and saw you making the coasters. There is a guillotine type of cutter for slates that would speed up your process. Billy Petherick showed one his dad had on The Pethericks when working on Simon’s roof this past summer.

The roof frame wood is almost all oak.

Every single restoration, large or small, starts with the roof. Job #1 is always to control water. You've got to seal the house and get the water away from the foundation. Don't even walk in the door until that's under control. You have to do all the unglamorous stuff first.
Thank you for your comment. As you can see, the first project we commenced on the chateau itself has been the restoration of the roof (first the oak frame and then the slate tiles). The facades and several other elements are being done at the same time as the different trades work off the same scaffolding platform. As the roof restoration progresses from east to west we can then start restoring rooms inside the chateau.

Thanks for your comment and for following our adventure. Bravo for acknowledging our amazing artisans. Saving Chateau de Purnon would be impossible without them! Regarding your question, we're not quite sure that we follow what you mean by 'clearing something over the stone in order to preserve it'. During the restoration the stone does receive an anti-mould treatment. However, it's a very mild intervention. Stone is obviously a natural product. It must be allowed to breath and it will weather and age over time.
Thanks for a great video. Can you see if the coat of arms was ever painted or coloured?
We haven't found any traces of paint pigment on the Coats of Arms. There are vertical and horizontal lines that were based on the Petra-Sancta system to indicate colours. Vertical lines represented the colour red (called 'gules' in heraldry) and blue (azure) ran horizontal. The presence of these lines on Purnon's coats of arms strongly infers that they were never intended to be painted.

do all your chimney's work please
With an internal clean they should all work. There is one that is not original (it was added at the end of the nineteenth century). This one is in the process of being decommissioned and carefully removed so that the roof line looks will look as it did when the chateau was first constructed in the 1780s.

We haven't had any baby owls in our chimneys but feel free to enjoy the adventure!
I wonder if the restoration of the Notre Dame de Pais has created accessibility to master stone masons and other reconstruction artisans. That massive undertaking must have produced many artisans in archaic trades. This is incredible knowledge of how these buildings were constructed to recreate them traditionally in modern times.
The shortage of artisans skilled in these traditional techniques and qualified to work on classified buildings is a national challenge in France. We certainly hope that the massive restoration at Notre Dame will help rekindle interest in these trades. We also hope that by sharing our journey at Purnon we can help celebrate the skills of these amazing people and keep this know-how alive.

Plenty of heavy duty work wear here... not so many diamonds and earl grey. But we love it!
I can see that passion drives you, something essentiel in life. I was kidding about the frocks and tea, I know first hand just how it is having restored two houses in the past. Today as usual, wellies and Barbour and dogs and happy ! I know quite a few chateau owners and they are mostly the same, wardrobes full of painting and gardening clothes with a frock or two in case !! Wouldn't change a thing. God bless xx@

It was a little hard to see what that stone detail the carver was working was going to be. It almost looked like a tassel but it was so smooth. The one on the other side of the dormer was smooth too, I think? You give very brief glimpses. It's an odd detail and I suppose it's intended to look like either the last segment of a garland or something from drapery. It's Baroque decorative playfulness.
You can notice that one side of the dormer has a triglyph - the panel with three vertical grooves - but the opposite seemed to have only two. That must have eroded too?
Of all the Chateau videos this is the most spectacular and best funded. It's obvious and even mentioned that this estate is costing millions to restore. I keep checking for new videos and it's always a kick to see each new one. Can't wait to see some more interior restoration too.
BTW - whatever happened to the book?
If I understood your question correctly, the stone detail that you were referring to is a pear. There is one on each side of the oculus (round window). The straight vertical features that sit on each side of the window are a classic design element of the Louis XVI style and they are symmetrical.

@- Thanks for the reply. I have a background in Architecture and am very familiar with 18th century furniture and architectural design. The vertical element is a triglyph just taken out of it's normal context. The same things occur on many classical buildings using the Doric or Tuscan order. They are being used on your house without the alternating metopes - the plaques that are usually sculptural. The British Museum has some of the metopes from the Parthenon. I just couldn't see very clearly whether the right hand one was damaged. It looked like it was missing the outer glyph.
I would never have guessed that drop was a pearl. In other words the designer(s) may have been thinking of the dormer as a kind of face wearing earrings on either side? The dormer with the pearl earrings.
About a year ago I found a facsimile copy of The First Book of Architecture of Philibert de L'Orme from Walmart of all places. I don't speak or read french and it uses the "s" that looks like a lower case "f". I tried to hand type a page into the translation program .and found it could translate most of the words but not all. Anything that explains the design of your roof (I know de L'orme wasn't the architect of your house and he only designed two buildings in his lifetime) must be in a latter volume.
I would like to know if there is any meanings of the carvings. What did the pear mean if anything?

They are working on the central 'dome' at the moment. There are still many slate tiles to attach.
Strange that they don’t use a normal tin roof. Much quicker and very effective.

Tourism represents about 8% of the GDP and 2 million jobs in France, mostly thanks to the government massively investing in heritage preservation. Of course, everyone loves tax cuts. But I don't think anyone there would like to see the Government disengaging from heritage protection and leave it to the private sector.
