Warren you and i suffer from the same problem. We have logical thought processes honed by years of troubleshooting mechanical problems. When we look at the world going to shit we clearly see the cause and affect relationship of bad policies and it's hard to understand why others don't see it.

Both my girls learned on a manual one is 16 and the other 18 and guess what... NO TEXTING AND DRIVING and they are both EXCELLENT DRIVERS... Manuals teach you how to think ahead and pay attention to what is ahead of you. Anticipation of traffic ... etc

All these emissions they put on the diesels will put out more emissions than the old ones. Burning twice the amount of fuel and having to add this def shit that comes in a cardboard box and plastic container that’s a “one time use” and the new ones still throw the carbon out in the air just uses a shit ton of fuel and heat to bake it and then blows it out. Take a big displacement engine and turn it slow they’ll be twice as environmentally friendly as these new trucks. I couldn’t agree more about all this corruption shit and if anything we have just as much if not more corruption in our small town communities I can tell you so many corruption story’s that happened to us and our farms and drainage that got swept under the rug to make a damn dollar and screw us.
As I don’t know; is it normal for a truck & trailer to show up for inspection with a load on the trailer ? Seems a bit much to ask of the mechanic to have that load on there. Long time back on that driving day but we grew up driving farm tractors and that first lesson was in an old Ford farm truck, in a field with ruts, hills, ditches and mud, what a ride that was for a 12 year old kid. We maintained all of the equipment as well. I remember helping my Dad on his Chevy K5 Blazer, I could actual fit in the engine bay and reach every part.

I've got some clutch adjusting gauges, blue point I think. It's basically just a 1/2 fork thing you stick up there for checking the brake clearance and a 1/8 piece of flat metal with a rubber handle for checking the free pedal. For holding the clutch down to adjust it I use a telescoping hood prop wedged between the seat and the pedal. I'm pretty sure I got that from the Mac guy. I use the hood prop all the time for checking brake lights too. There was finally something good in the news today, SCOTUS ruled that requiring US citizens to get permission from the government to conceal carry is unconstitutional. It's a sad state of affairs though that it took them this long to finally rule on a gun case.

What we call in the UK an MOT - Ministry of Transport test. All done by a government ministry man. You pay a alarm and a leg to get old stuff through. New stuff (car, m/cycle, bus, and wagons) is under manufacturers warranty for 3 years before it has a a proper MOT. Everything to do with everything. Bulbs to engine management, from seat belts to wheels and brakes. MAD 🤪
Interesting difference between US and UK truck inspections, or so it seems. Here the vehicle is inspected by an independant inspector, any faults result in a failed test. Then the vehicle cannot be used until the faults are repaired and the vehicle re-submitted for a re-test. Our dept of transport is red hot on HGV compliance, they have random road side tests enforced by the Police. They look for spy in the cab regs compliance, tyre wear and damage, lights, over loading, safety test compliance, emissions, use of red diesel, etc. Any problems and the penalties range from a ticket to confiscation of the truck and prosecution of the driver. This is because years ago there was a time when lots of fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles were happening due to poor maintenance and neglect. Our DOT went on a mission to erradicate bad working practice by HGV operators, it has worked.
The sad thing is, it's not just abolishing property rights to save the planet, because it's old and polluting, but when they force you to park it up and buy a new truck, the amount of polution made during the creation of that new truck and the waste of resources must be worse than keeping the old truck going.
Lots of times when a v belt keeps squealing it's cause the pulley is worn out I am in complete agreement on the annual inspection not being down very well by lots of shops. They spend more time filling out paperwork than they do inspecting the vehicle.
My state went from every six months to an annual inspection. I still have it inspected twice a year, too much can need attention. I do have a mobile greasing service come out for my services. in between inspections.

I did DOTs for a number of years but never really found a good training program to do them, I just serviced an PMed a fleet of bread trucks. I did get an air brake cert but something DOT official would be a benefit. Do you recommend a training program to be a DOT certified inspector?
We dont own the trucks or cars we drive. You get a certificate of title not title of truck. State owns title of yr truck, that why they tell you what to do. You dont own the truck you drive the state does. Not you even though you pay for everything. Look it up it's true.

Vehicle inspections are a joke. Yeah, you're right. Not a truck but took a car into a Maryland inspection place once with a broken side window. I needed the car pronto so I rolled the glass down before I got there and sure enough they missed it. Passed it. Kinda pissed me off. Had it been something serious and my wife was relying on them it would have been bad. Inspections are a political decision therefore you just know they make little to no sense.
auto vs Manual trans ... I had a vehicle inspector here the other day who can't drive a manual. It's the millennial anti theft device.
