    Although I'm not entirely satisfied with the finish of the series, I like how each of Ragnar's sons' end reflected their father's personality. Hvitserk becoming a christian and Ivar going into the middle of the battle hoping he would go to Valhalla reflect Ragnar's inner conflict about the christian God and nordic gods. Ubbe reflects Ragnar as a traveller and explorer. Bjorn reflects Ragnar as a man who would die defending his home, a man who would fight until the very end and whose death was inspiration for others. Even Sigurd died as a result of a fight within his family which was also the case for Ragnar.

      Nah. I would have like that as well but it defeats the purpose of the show. It wouldn't make sense as a key theme in the whole show is faith and how so many characters were questioning their faith. Especially in the last scene where Ubbe is asking Floki about the gods and Floki responds with "do not bother me with that". You can also see it when both Alfred and Ivar are calling to their gods but none answer them. The show leaves with all the characters questioning their faith and I think it does it extremely well.

The Viking history is not common knowledge and many believes that the Vikings TV show is the real thing ! What I dislike from Hurst or the producers is that they have embellished the Viking stories to add drama and emotions, where , for example, the sons of Ragnarr, Ivarr Ragnarsson and Ubba were famous for their cruelty , horror and viciousness toward women and children in East Anglia... furthermore, the real story of Floki Vilgeroarson and his wife and 2 daughters in Iceland, is a lot more interesting than the '' fanatical '' Floki in the series ......

      @intergalactickoala665 Před 3 lety +4

      I'd have to disagree. The others, save for Sigurd (who was far more detached due to his awful upbringing), will have been more effected by his ten year disappearance as they actually knew him. Ivar didn't. He was sheltered by his mother. His image of Ragnar was closer to that of any other person who'd heard of his adventures and achievements - he was nigh godlike. So it's hardly a wonder he didn't possess the same anger at their father's absence that the other sons did. He only began to see his father as a man when they travelled to Wessex, which was long enough to push Ivar to utilise his strengths rather than be shackled down by his weaknesses, as that would be the only way for him to succeed and, more importantly, survive. Yet it was not enough time to discard the mask that had been placed on his father.
      Each son mirrored and honoured certain traits of their father. Ivar truly believed in the legend, saw his father as less of a man and more as a greater being, which led him to believe the same for himself.
      SPOILER
      Only when faced with his own death did Ivar begin to understand his mortality.
      So...was Ivar the only one that understood his father? No. None of the sons did. They fathomed parts of who he was because they each carried those parts within themselves. They never had the time to truly understand him, even Bjorn (who was the only one initially to accept his father had faults and was a man).
      Ragnar was not only renowned for his dreams, he was a slave to them. This made him a poor husband and father - not due to a lack of love, but a consuming ambition - yet it also made him a brilliant man. A legend.

      the thruth is that we don't need to know. Michael Hirst knew it and that's why he didnt show his journey outside Kattegat. The important thing with the fact that he left Kattegat is that the throne was empty and after all this time, Kattegat have changed. And of course, no one support Ragnar anymore and this is the beginning of the era of the Ragnarssons. That was the only reason so we don't need to see what he did while he left ;)
