    Speaking of "through the trees": We had a glider club nearby and I enjoyed paying for the tow to get a glider ride way back when. I did it a few times. There was a tree in line with the approach end of the grass runway. The angle of glide is very shallow in a glider, but I could swear we were going to hit the tree as we approached the runway. I knew we would not clear that tree and I braced for an impact. The body of the glider passed through the V-cut in the top of the tree and the wings went through the smaller branches and twigs. When we landed I told one of the other pilots that we actually hit the upper part of that tree. The fellow said, "Oh, Ed likes to fly through that tree. He does it all the time."

    • @interfrastically
      @interfrastically Před 2 lety +9

      I'm a 1600 hour glider pilot. I wouldn't fly with Ed... Unless the approach control devices (spoilers, air brakes or, more rarely flaps or a drogue chute) fail there's no need to make a shallow approach in a sailplane. In fact doing so is kind of dodgy. Even in the rare event of a failure such as that most gliders can slip fairly steeply.

It was really a mess with pieces on bamboo and 2X4s sticking through and out of everywhere. One horizontal stabilizer was just about gone plus the leading edge slats were all bent up, but surprisingly functional. Most surprising was the damn J57 engine was still running but the pitot tube was bent up in front of the intake. He had no airspeed indicator and had to fly along side his buddy in the other fighter. So they turned to the river and found 3 of them. The dived down and took out 2, then the pilot in the one plane circled around and dove down again but got too low and after firing on the Sampan he looked out his windshield and the hut was right in his path.He said he yanked back on the stick, throttled up and went right through the roof. I was the crewchief of that plane and when he taxied in I was aghast. I could hardly believe it still flew. I wished I had had my camera with me. Actually, the .50 cal BMG was used to shoot at aircraft a lot, when it was mounted in the wings of WWII fighters or the fuselages and turrets of WWII bombers, and even beyond, like into the Korean War. The F-86 Sabre had six of them mounted in its nose, and I believe the F-100 had four of them mounted behind the nose air intake, even though the-100 was too late for Korean War deployment. The .50 cal M-2's and later M-3's were very effective at shooting down enemy planes.

      AA GUNS are usually 30mm shells that will explode at specific altitudes or time after firing to create a cloud of shrapnel in close proximity to, or in front of an aircraft. An M2 Browning Machine Gun fires standard belt-linked .50BMG ball ammo that can be used on ANYTHING in range ... vehicles, aircraft or people (There has been recorded instances of long-range [1+ mi, 1600+ m] SNIPER shots using an M2). There are a multitude of OTHER types of .50BMG rounds, including Armour Piercing (AP), Incendiary, Tracer, explosive (Raufoss HEIAP), API, APIT, Sabot Light Armour Penetrator (SLAP & SLAP-T), etc, but they're used almost exclusively in bolt-action or magazine-fed .50 cal Sniper/Anti-Material Rifles.

Depending on the mount it may be able to elevate high enough for AA use, but that isn’t the right one. 20-40mm fast firing cannons are made for AA.

    A couple of things here. First off, when doing short field procedures on a semi-prepared surface, you DO NOT want to step on the brakes and apply max power. Your nose wheel is likely to dig into the soil and you can easily get stuck or damage it. Second, some aircraft holding procedures have you drop your flaps. This is because those aircraft are more efficient in that setting. In my experience for those aircraft, the flap setting for holding is the same as takeoff flaps.

After landing, I waited a few moments after the pilots had opened the flight deck door, and one was standing just outside. I asked him if I could stick my head in for a peek and he said "Yeah, quickly." I took a quick look and of course it was what I have seen in sims before. Mentioned to him that I was an Airbus fan.. 8:27 There is an interesting instance in history, Jose Sanjurjo was a senior leader in the nationalist coup in Spain during the opening of the civil war. This is how he died. On 20 July 1936, Sanjurjo was killed in Estoril in a plane crash, when he tried to fly back to Spain. He chose to fly in a small biplane aircraft piloted by Juan Antonio Ansaldo. One of the main reasons for the crash was the heavy luggage that Sanjurjo insisted on bringing. Ansaldo had warned him that the load was too heavy, but Sanjurjo answered back:
    "I need to wear proper clothes as the new caudillo of Spain." Unaccountably, Sanjurjo chose to fly in Ansaldo's plane rather than a much larger and more suitable airplane that was available. The larger plane was an 8-passenger de Havilland Dragon Rapide, the same one which had transported Franco from the Canary Islands to Morocco. Sanjurjo, however, apparently preferred the drama of flying with a "daring aviator" such as Ansaldo (who himself survived the crash)

    • @christosvoskresye
      @christosvoskresye Před 4 lety +3

      Not really. In the 70's the Holiday Inn was a moderate, mid-scale motel. Then it went into a decline and became pretty sketchy in the 1980's, while Day's Inn was a reliable, moderate, mid-scale motel. Then Day's Inn went into a decline -- I think the last time I stayed there, I had to call the manager because there were soiled sheets on the bed -- and Holiday Inn bounced back to become actually a little upscale.
      But at any given time, regardless of the general reputation of the chain, a specific hotel might be cleaner or dirtier, calmer or wilder than one might expect. The statement in the movie was about a SPECIFIC Holiday Inn, one apparently attached to a cocktail bar.

As for going through the trees on the edge of a stall, and with gear still down....it's going to slow him down and it only takes minor damage to the props or engine ingestation to turn the day into a bad one....

Amazing as that was, he didn't know the wing was missing until after the landed and started to get out of the plane. Could you do a video on what happened there and the chances of another pilot being able to do that under similar circumstances? Thanks.

    14:20 the drag from the branches and leaves would be MASSIVE!
    He would get a huge speed reduction and with that stall warning before, drop out of the ski like a stone.

      You'd be surprised. They don't actually effect the speed all that much, or the planes ability to fly as well. (Working out here in the Alaskan Bush, you see some crazy stuff.)

      @@georgewhitworth9742 For a light weight plane, a row of leaves wrapping around the leading edge of the wings acts like a break, ignoring branches. Those wings offer a lot contact area and he would have easily lost enough speed to go down.

    I operated my 500A Super 300 Twin Commander on medical missions in the Sierra Madre mountains. The village that we served, Via Hidalgo, (5000’ elevation) was a one way in and one way out crude 2000 dirt strip. All departures were early morning when temperatures were cool. On the take off, boots on the brakes, flaps at 10, lean to max rpm, spool up tight, release the brakes and launch
    With 600 HP at close to gross we climed like a screaming banshee. Our course of departure took us over inhospitable terrain. Because of this my procedure was to leave the gear extended until clear of the terrain. Reason being that i knew if I lost an engine the good engine would take us to the site of the crash.
    My pre launch decision in the event that I lost an engine, my good engine would come off line and we would become a glider with a very strong undercarriage. I made several operations in and out of this strip and it was always a challenge. For a pilot it was ALWAYS a BLAST. 😀

    A fifty calibre round does not "rip an engine apart". It makes holes in it to be sure but it certainly could keep running depending on the location of the damage. For instance the rounds could take one magneto out leaving other operating.
    Source; Me, as a former Air Defence weaponry evaluation team member.
    Big round engines would keep running, sometime for quite a while, after hits that carried a piston and cylinder assembly away!

      I have watched WWII combat footage of allied bombers returning to England with all sorts of damage.
      there was nothing left to some of them, but they were still flying.
      well, maybe not flying exactly, but they made it home.

    A little off topic, but movies like this remind me of the good old days. When the cabin doors weren’t always closed, and my first time on a plane, my parents asked the flight attendant to ask the pilot if I could see the cockpit. As a little tike in the 80’s. The pilot put me on his lap while my parents watched and the attendant gave me a set of wings (pin). Pre 9/11 was so different and I just remember how the pilots loved showing kids the cockpit. It was a commercial flight cross country, so it was not a small plane. I just can’t believe life was ever that simple.

    What makes his movies good when he is a pilot is the fact he is a pilot in real life. So im sure he has a lot of inputs on how to shoot the shots.
