I'm betting that the first pitch for this movie was "We're going to crash a plane on the Las Vegas strip" and all the rest of the movie was reverse engineered from that.
Probably threw in something involving prisoners as well since there's a lot of other ways to crash into the strip but probably not wrong lol.
0
Lol you’d get drunk as 🤣😂
Haha the movie was built around one average looking stunt scene where an airplane lands in Vegas strip. That makes sense to me.
I've always said that the pitch meeting went "Ok, we get it. You have a bunch of criminals take over a prison transport plane. Is there any way you can get our new casino in Vegas into the movie? Also, Chevy wants a classic corvette highlighted. If you can work that out in the script, we will green light it...." 🙂
Three things every prison convict learns:
1) How to make prison hooch
2) Don't drop the soap
3) Memorize the schematics of a C-132
People don't actually get raped in showers, rape isn't cool no matter where you are and don't get me wrong it does happen but its no where near as common as you'd think
Of course... Every prison has the manuals and schematics for every plane ever built.
Didn't Cyrus the Virus have the plane schematics? He probably told Pinball where the hatch was.
Prison is boring AF. Reading schematics inside would be a treat...just saying
@@WitchidWitchid jail has the internet. Or should I say prison.
Gotta love Kelsey’s facial reactions when watching the clips lol.
21:41 is my favorite line from this movie; "on any other day that might seem strange".
My favorite was “… or the bunny gets it!”
"Comin' up!"
Kelsey, you have no idea how much these two words lighten up my day.
glad to hear it 👍
Haha that’s what I was thinking

I thought the same thing! Well not exactly but the take off and take them off part
ASMR Craft so landing should be called take in!
@@vaporisedair4919 wtf.. YES :O
Ha don't let the door hit you on the way out mate.
I've been binge watching this series and I made some notes for movie directors
1. Planes aren't "basically big flying cars"
2. The wings have wires in it
3. And fuel
4. You don't use yoke on ground
5. You want to wear your shoulder harness as little as possible
These seem to be 5 things that the movies get wrong the most often
That about sums it up. So just make a huge blockbuster movie and I’ll let you know my thoughts
If you can keep a straight face - review "Snakes on a Plane" :D
Late ass reply but ever since I watched the first Hollywood vs reality I've wanted to see him review that movie since the entire thing movie is on the plane.
When John Qusack searches the prison cell he finds the plans for the plane. Thats where the plane knowledge would come from

There's an old joke that goes something like, you're at a huge dinner party with people from every line of work, how do you tell which one is a pilot? Don't worry, he'll tell you.
As a prison employee, never doubt a prisoner’s ability
You mean the transponder unscrewing thing?
Agreed. Inmates may be stupid or unlucky enough to get caught.
However, once serving a long prison sentence the ones that have the intelligence- and willingness to do what is required to escape will become evident.
I love your face when you are watching these just that look of pure concentration.
When you don’t understand a flight movie, watch Kelsy’s Hollywood vs reality

As a former Fueler, I HAVE HAD pilots turn the engine on while I was fueling... Gotta stop fueling disconnect and wait to yell at the pilot
Its called a hot start when they start the engines while still fueling the aircraft but its a dangerous thing to do because i guess you can understand why its dangerous
@@GoodnightFromHim what? Who told you that, because that is not at all what a hot start is lmao
if there's one thing I've learned from being an A&P and a pilot, it's that being intelligent is definitely not a requirement to fly airplanes lol

"I don't know how all these convicts know the schematics of this aircraft"
Later in the movie, as they were going through Cyrus Grissom's cell, they find (amongst other troubling contraband) schematics of that plane. As the convicts seem to have a coordinated plan, it would stand to reason that where things were and how they worked was information that was passed between them during the planning stages, including this hatch.
Well observed.
Although the one turning on the light was Nicolas Cage's character, who did not know about the plan.
Some pilots like Kelsey want to pretend like they have a hard job. So they say normal people can't fly and work a aircraft. But really it's super easy. A guy hijacked one not long ago and flew great just from playing flight simulators.
@@clutchnixon5880 "Flew great?" You mean the ramp worker from Horizon who stole the Dash 8? The one who crashed it and died? Not sure that I'd call that "flying great." The only reason he even knew how to start the thing was that repositioning those exact aircraft (on the ground) was part of his job. Sure, someone with a decent amount of sim experience and who had on-the-job training for how to actually start and taxi the aircraft could taxi out to a runway, take off, and fly around visually for a while. Making a survivable landing, however, is a completely different story, unless they've either been trained in how to set up and enable the autoland system on that particular aircraft or they can get a trained pilot for that aircraft on the radio who can walk them through it. Someone who has never flown a plane before safely landing a Dash 8 (let alone a larger jet) by themselves without autoland is just not going to happen.
There was a guy a while back who safely landed a smaller twin turboprop after the pilot died in flight... but that guy was a licensed private pilot with hundreds of hours.
@@vbscript2 Skyking did a barrel roll and other maneuvers which drew the praise of those witnessing the flight and trained pilots. He downed the plane because he was suicidal and didn't want to face jail time, not because he mucked up and crashed.
I'm gonna write a movie script JUST to hire Kelsey on as a script advisor. 😂 You want wires? I'll show you wires!
The most unrealistic part of this movie was Nicolas Cage's accent.
Yeah it was pretty bad
Yeah his accent moved all across the hollywood south, then landed somewhere near the bad guy from The Fifth Element. It's almost as bad as Dick Van Dyke's accent in Mary Poppins.
There's a part in the movie where i think he try's to hard to b cool, but otherwise not a bad actor, i'm not defending him, i'm just saying.
painful to listen to.
Put tha buhnny back in the box
The town I grew up in (Wendover) was one of the last filming locations and after filming the plane was left there and is free to go walk through at the airport (KENV). It was really cool being able to see it and learning about a lot of the little things that happened during filming. Like the lower area that the landing gear is in, isn't even a real spot in the plane.

@@74gear yes, there's a switch 7500, 7600, 7700, ok 4 switches.
They spent all the money on the hi-tech stuff in the back but totally skimped out on the cockpit. Seems like bad allocation of funds.
Every time he said lets get back to the movie, i got an ad
21:54.... "if it has the payload capacity, it could pull a plane up in the air..."
Wait... what??!
I'm pretty sure he meant car
While he probably meant car, there are, in fact, planes capable of lifting other planes, and not small ones either. Best known example is probably the shuttle carrier aircraft.

@@74gear Stay safe during these unsettling times.
Best thing on the movie was Steve Buscemi and his "Define 'irony'" and "What is insane?" speeches.
Fun fact...The “Real” Con Air is called Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System (JPATS). It’s headquarters are in Kansas City, Missouri and they keep most of their fleet in Oklahoma City.
So. That's is where they probe aliens.
Also their callsign is Justice (the movie was using Jailbird)
0:26 Building sign says Central Park Prugio, so this is Inchon/Seoul, Korea.
I made the same deduction! Not disappointed someone in the comments got it too from Prugio. :)
“Keep the Blue Side up!” Damn that’s Catchy
what I love is how sometimes in movies the wings seem indestructible and smash through anything and everything, and other times (often in the same movie!) they snap off like twigs the moment they even get near another object 🙄😂
I love how you used the seatbelt sound to censor 😂
What time?
Not a pilot but do have some electrical background. I thought the part where they hooked the transponder to a lantern battery to be super ridiculous. Not only did the convict know which wires were the power supply of the transponder itself... But I also highly doubt that even if the transponder could operate off the 6 Volts DC a standard lantern battery provides.. Said battery would go dead rather quickly.
Indeed pretty sure the avionics power supply on most aircraft is 24V DC certainly for larger aircraft seems to be fairly typical seems unlikely that it would be any lower given the equipment load. Hell even car electrical systems run on 12V and they have a significantly smaller electrical load for their equipment panels seems to me the current draw would be excessive to run all the avionics on such a low voltage.
Agreed those old torch batteries would not run for long powering a Transponder it also seemed to lack an antenna.
The little box stenciled TRANSPONDER is not the transponder, it is just the transponder control module, where you enter your transponder code. No need to pull it out or hot wire it, just enter your desired code. Such Hollywood hok7m.
I love the thinly vailed sarcasm and the way I can hear you rolling your eyes, and again the cut scenes
Gosh this is a wonderful channel!!! Thanks Kelsey for the entertainment
I just rewatched this movie before sleep for the -nth times. I'm a long time fan of John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi, and I always enjoyed Nicolas Cage over-the-top expressions, LoL. And there's Dave Chappelle, and John Cusack, too.
I was wondering what Kelsey would think and comment on certain scenes, so here I am watching while eating my breakfast!
🤣👍❤
"Can you bounce an aircraft? Yes! I have done it before." Too funny! One of those rough landings you've spoken of? (Did we land or were we shot down?) Seeing John Cusack reminds me of another movie involving aviation: Pushing Tin. It would be awesome to get your views on that one. Thanks for the videos!
@Brian Ball: _Pushing Tin,_ while an innovative and witty narrative, has no more to do with aviation that to observe air traffic controllers, as well as have a character, played by Billy Bob Thornton, while on a runway subject himself to the jet blast of a commercial jet.
You never realise how much there is of something until you like it
I never knew there were so many plane movies, but I have to see them all now
He is not whipping other cons, those are the marshalls they had taken hostage. In a previous scene Cyrus tries to have them killed and Poe says they might need them. Then they use them to get the plane out.
When there is a WHIP, there is a WAY.
Anakin Cubawalker - Oh, well that makes the movie totally legit, then. ;-)
How does that change the fact that whipping people instead of pulling is less effective?

Kelsey .. I played your Con Air review to my wife as a litmus test. I can tell you even non pilots are PTSL at your straight forwardness of reviewing. keep it up flybru. I LOVE your channel.
I get that the reason for them steering with the yoke is so they don't confuse viewers, who would probably think the rudder pedals are brakes and gas or something, but all it would take is a couple big budget hollywood movies showing the right thing and making passing comments about what is going on and most people would understand
All they really need is a quick close-up of the pilot's feet moving the rudder pedals followed by a quick cut to the rudder turning, then the plane. It would only take 2 or 3 seconds of screen time.
I think it is great that you find the time to do these great videos and fly around the world. Thanks Capt
When I first saw this movie my heart was nearly broken at what they did to a perfectly beautiful Sabreliner. Looks like the T-39A. The T-39 was retired from the AF and some, at least, were sold on the civilian market. I worked on the T-39A as a young Air Force crew chief and flight mechanic in 1971 at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. I loved that aircraft. Loved working on it and loved flying on it as an enlisted crew member.
@J CC Whew. Thanks for letting me know.😌
North American NA-265 sabreliner 65. More were built for civilian market than the military. Very popular jet in 70s-90s.
Couldn't stop laughing through all of this. Gotta love Hollywood, the 90s were so full of realism :) Your reactions just add to the joy. Good stuff
1:47. That moment when you get suspicious that Kelsey is a FFDO.
🤷♂️ 😂
I wouldn't know why they all aren't.
In these days, what with the scaremongering brought in the aftermath of the Operation Northwoods 2.0, i suppose it's safer to bet that all of them have some sort of training. And i mean, even without the scaremongering, they should. A plane is a crucible where various factors and variables meet. You never know who is 20 rows behind you, safer to be trained and ready.
What's a FFDO???
@Captain Caveman thanks buddy. Don't think we have them in England..
Something you missed about the transponder scene, is the fact that he powered it with a 6V lantern battery, the DC bus in virtually every aircraft that isn't a single engine GA plane is 24V, there's no way you can power any 24V equipment with a 6V battery (you MIGHT get away with using an 18V power tool battery, but definitely not a 6V lantern battery)
Edit: that scene at the end where the plane hit the hard rock guitar and ripped part of the wing off, that plane would immediately bank left and probably hit a building, the ailerons simply don't have enough authority to counteract that much asymmetric lift (especially when you only have 1 of them)
@@SF-tb4kb yeah but he didn't have a boost converter, not like you can go on eBay and buy one while in prison
@@mwbgaming28 HE WIRED THEM IN SERIES, RIGHT?
@@davidsoom1551 there was only 1 battery, no series connection is possible
The whole wiring thing was ridiculously he had hundreds of stripped wires twisted random ones to an antique torch battery yes only 6v left all the others exposed. So on the million to one chance it would work without shorting out that battery would not power the transponder for more than a few minutes.
@@dogwalker666 it wouldn't power it at all, 24V gear generally won't work much below about 18V, even life sustaining medical equipment that runs on a 24V battery will shut down below 20V (If they can't make that run at a low voltage, no way an aircraft transponder will work on 6V)
I’ve really enjoyed the Hollywood vs. Reality series. Thanks for all the great videos!
Nice video as always.
Thank you!
I think everybody says “coming up” at the same time as you Kels😂😂♥️
lol i do
You missed a big one Kelsey! The scene where they are flying away and where tower is tracking the other plane thinking it’s them.
ATC can only identify a transponder by the code that they provide. If that transponder was set to standby then it wouldn’t exactly give an ident to the tower.
On top of that, unless they were flying super low to the ground in a military style terrain hugging profile to avoid radar, ATC would still be tracking them on secondary radar. They wouldn’t have as accurate a picture without the info from the transponder and the refresh rate of the radar, but it would be good enough to vector fighters to intercept them, which I figure is what would happen if a plane full of convicts hijacked a plane.
Something I was kind of surprised Kelsey didn't mention is that the scenic tours plane would probably be squawking 1200. I'm sure ATC would be more than a little confused why two IFF squawks were right on top of each other.
Yo I see you commenting on Mesabi Zephyr videos all the time. I guess there is a decent crossover between railroad and aviation people.
@@amtrak706 I used to be a railroad person but now I am an aviation person
Unless I'm highly mistaken (which I easily could be), it seems the dude rigged a battery to the transponder, as I guess being disconnected from the plane, the transponder would have no power. No power would be an effective way to not get tracked. But I think the idea is that he wanted the transponder to be tracked, so the feds would be looking in the wrong place entirely (because of the little plane giving the hijacked plane's signal) instead of looking around as many places as possible or keeping the search near the last known location (because no signal).

As a crane operator and crane mechanic, that's not how old cranes work.
Now you need to do a Hollywood Vs Reality for cranes!
It would be very short. There's allot of crane stuff in movies but I would have to pull from a ton of movies to make one video. It might be fun.
@@dragthatsht Can't say that I really know anything about cranes but I did wonder whether or not something like that would have some kind of lockout on the arm itself to prevent accidental release while parked similar to those on some other types of heavy machinery. Remember any landing you can walk away from is a good landing
My best landing was the one I walked away from .Engine failure on a cropduster . And yes it takes fuel to make them burn which my one did . And yes dragging those wings through upsticles slows you down very fast . I stopped in half the usual landing distance.
4th? Hey Kelsey, just wanted to say thank you for the videos, and thank you for what you are doing getting medical supplies everywhere these days! Take care of yourself!
ya happy to do my small part for those really on the front line!
Love watching your videos. Very in depth explanations .all the way from Dublin Ireland
Love your videos Kelsey. Keep them coming.
I'd also just like to say I disagree with your point about the wing not exploding when they say there's no fuel. Once you fuel an aircraft up for the first time you'll never get the fuel system totally dry again, short of thoroughly cleaning it out and leaving it to sit with the tanks open for an extended period. There will always be residual fuel in the tanks, even if there isn't sufficient to really register on the fuel gauge and isn't enough to keep an engine running. Arguably a tank which is pretty much drained of fuel like that is more of an explosion risk than one that is full of fuel. When the tank's full there isn't space for the fuel to evaporate and mix with oxygen, so all you have is liquid fuel, you could throw a match in it and nothing would happen. (I don't, of course, advise or condone trying this, nor do I take responsibility if you do) However when the tank is empty or nearly empty of fuel the residual fuel is able to evaporate and form an explosive mix with the air in the tank, throw a match in that and it's going to be a very bad day. Of course, if you're talking about the fire risk when a tank is ruptured, then sure, more fuel in a full tank means theres more fuel to leak out of the tank, mix with air outside the tank and burn, but that will be fuel burning, not exploding.
25:55 "I've never flown through a bunch of things that have tried to slow my plane down". You're a good pilot man, keep it up. (hehe pun intended)
Mr K, Just want to say, this was the funniest way to watch these movies. Thanks Again Chris and Rick From Chicago ♥️
This is a great channel and very informative. ty
@74 Gear. You do see wires in the "Con Air" movie, Specifically, in your video, at 20:22, you can freeze frame and see a severed wire hanging from the tail section.
Also, They don't state it in the movie, but landing on "The Strip" means a higher chance that the prisoners aboard the plane can escape in the confusion. If they'd landed at the Airport, they'd be in a secure location, and easier to round up. So that prisoner Pilot was full of it, and took advantage of the fact that Po had no knowledge of aviation. (Side note, Where the hell did he get a Vietnam "Grunt" style helmet in that plane?)
Finally, Po is Ex US Army Ranger, so was probably deployed from similar Aircraft in his Airborne Training. Which would explain basic knowledge of that style of aircraft, at least for storytelling purpose.
This movie was ridiculous when it first came out and hasn't aged well
Nicholas Cages poor attempt of a southern accent was one of the worst.
Its a fun movie that was never meant to be sophisticated
I appreciate your accuracy and wit.
Incheon, I know it well through History of my Marine Corps... Thanks for another informative and entertaining video... You do have the gift for this...
One of my dad's friends was an air traffic controller in Anchorage, Alaska. I was about 10 years old and he invited me to see and I even got to see him vector in a 737. I saw the tower and the control rooms.
That's probably the control tower that takes care of local air traffic? (Within the vicinity of the airport)
When you asked "Where am I" I said Soaul. At least I was in the same country! Great video
Its the same. Incheon is the main airport to Seoul. They don't have anymore room in Seoul so they have to build the airport far out. But 99% of passengers into Incheon are heading to Seoul, not Incheon itself.
Absolutely love your channel as a very nervous flier I find your videos very informative and interesting will never enjoy flying but watching your videos puts me a little more at ease thx
These movies made me think that aviation was a lot more complicated than it actually is and ever was lol , all the unnecessary switch touching 😄 really enjoy your videos .
The “transponder” was just the control panel. The actual transmitter would be located elsewhere in the aircraft.
And have an antenna connector and require peak currents of dozens or hundreds of amps.
At the Fresno, CA airport we had a young girl (15 or 16?) sneak onto the airfield, get into a king air, start the engines, and run it into a building.
I don't think it's too difficult to get engines going on a lot of aircraft. Doing it safely and correctly is a bit more challenging.
Hi Kelsey! There are some aircraft types where you can get to your pilot seat via the outboard side. I remember on the MD11 it was very easy.
Love the videos.
Great one sir
Really love Hollywood vs reality!!!!
5:48
"Is it realistic to take [the transponder] out and put it on another plane? Yeah."
No.
The transponder needs an antenna. It needs to be connected to an antenna on the (lower) surface of the plane. It won't work without an antenna.
Also, most airplanes don't have anything to directly monitor the transponders in other airplanes.
10:01
There is virtually no way that ATC would be fooled that the twin Beach was the hijacked plane. The Beach would have its own transponder. And if it was under ATC control it would likely have its own unique squawk code.
The hijacked plane would probably still give a primary return on radar. If you were looking for a hijacked plane one with a primary return and no transponder would be a prime suspect.
He's got the whole world, in his hands.

Redundant addition here, also as the plane is leaving the hanger with the material draping over the plane, I'm pretty sure that material would be sucked into the engines and most likely damaging the engine blades.

I’m not a pilot and I’ve only flown flight sims at work. I don’t know how similar the c123 is to the c130J but one of our flight sims is the cut out of an old c130 cockpit with “newish” panels and HDDs. In that sin there is enough room to step into the seat from the out side. Also our panels aren’t fastened with screws but rather a mechanism that you twist and it kind of latches. It’s actually pretty easy to manipulate, but it’s a lab and that might be for ease of hot swapping. I haven’t had the chance to hop onto one in the flight line yet but I hope to soon. Great videos, I enjoy watching them.
Thanks for this. I've never seen any of your videos before. I watch Con Air for the plane aspect and I'm glad to hear what you had to say. Though I've had flight training I never noticed the actors steering the yoke on the ground like a car. Hahahaha!!! Thanks again.
