Inspiring 83 year old inline skater Tony returns to skating with Asha Skatefresh after a break.

- Tony learned to skate with me when he was in his mid 60s. He came on a Skatefresh Paris Trip in around 2007. He stopped skating at 70 and had a 13 year break.
He returned in Oct 2021 saying he missed skating and wanted to get back into it as he was planning a 2022 trip to Miami to waterski and "skate in the sunshine".
Today was Tony’s funeral (24th January 2022)
I shall miss his humour, his “nothing is impossible” attitude and his positivity. It was a privilege to spend time with him and I enjoyed watching passers-by stop in their tracks and marvel.
It just takes one person to plant a new idea in someone’s head. Every time I taught Tony I’d have a new student (over the age of 50) who finally realised they weren’t too old to learn #howtoskate.
Life is precious. We will never do all the things we hope and plan to.
May we all be skating into our 80s and making adventurous plans.

congratulations, it's amazing and beautiful to see people of advanced age facing new challenges. this is inspiring.
Honestly this should have some disclaimer "don't try at home", because it is really super dangerous for people of this age to do inline skating, that is of course unless you already tired of living and want to do die faster. The issue is bone density at this age is severely degraded and single fall can result in broken hip and at this age this can lead to death.
hi Asha, love this, Im 66 and have lots of friends and contemporaries really putting me down as a risk taker and being to old to learn to skate, its very encouraging to think i can get another good few years of the best activity I have ever done
Yes it's hard for many people (usually non-skaters) to change their pre-conceived ideas about risks. Yes skating has risks, but that's why it's important to learn properly and practice regularly and consciously reduce the risks and overcome the challenges. Not just never try. You keep at it and keep enjoying yourself.
I think you're brave. I am almost 57 years old and I just started learning. So I am glad we do it in spite of peoples comments.
This says so much about them, both...
Beautiful story, RIP Tony 🙏🏿
Well, no excuses now (though I am booked up for February :D
As a borderline intermediate, I had an hour with Nick in Hyde Park some years ago when I was in my early 60s. Since then arthritis in my knees has got worse (I've had one replacement) and I haven't persevered. Stories like Tony's fill me with admiration.
So sorry your knee doesn't let you skate anymore, but you know the feelings of it which is better than never having skated.
Thanks Asha for this great video. It's inspire me to spread the ideas of skating beyond age group no matter how old you are. Everyone should learn to skate once in their lifetime. Skate for fitness & fun. Thumbs up 👍
That is awesome! I agree. Tony would be so happy that his story inspired so many of you.
He seemed like an amazing person. Thanks for sharing this, Asha.
Rest In Peace Tony
Did he die?
@@Char1ieskate yes today was his funeral
The good news is he got to have some sweet skate sesh in at his age that’s so cool
Legend
@@ebaocihc7085 so sad! Inspiring!
Really sweet and inspiring! I'm aproaching my 40's and sometimes get me thinking that I might face limitations to my skating and other activities in the years to come... Stories like this show that these limitations are only in our minds! ;)
Exactly. Keeping moving is the best thing we can do for ou bodies, whatever our age. It's just finding the ways that you like to move and sticking with them....
I'm 54 and every saturday during the winterseason i skate with my 10 year old daughter for 4 hours , not only is it good exercise, it's also a good bonding exercise .
And then there are the Friday Night Skate outings
I love the families who skate together...... such unity and respect.
Very inspiring and a little sad story too. God bless his soul. I started to learn skating at 52. Asha - your videos are one big source of that learning. Thank you !
The pupil is good, and the teacher is also good ... as well as beautiful 😏😊😉
Thanks Asha for sharing this, it is sad to hear but also really inspiring! May he rest in peace!
This is just beautiful.Life is beautiful when you see things like this
That truly is a genius idea about the nut! Sad and sweet video 💙
Right?! I thought this was indeed genius of him and he never fell backwards once!
Definitivo, la felicidad es un estado mental. Qué inspirador.
It's never too late, amazing!

Nice to see you both with big smiles at the end.
You are a great teacher and a special lady Asha.
I am a oldie and use to enjoy skating.you have inspired me to dust them off,Thank You.
You are so kind and I'm so pleased this video has inspired you to return to skating. Please take advantage of the beginner and intermediate Playlist videos to make sure you do the right things, reduce the risks of falling and learn correctly. It makes all the difference. Have fun!
I started 42 yo, last year. I was alone, no one teach me arround, i decided to learn myself. It's neccessary one thing, passion.
Beautiful story
Rip

Amazing so glad he got back into it before he passed. I'll remember Tony when I think I'm too old to skate. 💚
Me too! He was a true inspiration meaning I always felt uplifted from spending time with him.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment with us. 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it. I was planning a much more in-depth video with Tony in March but alas his legacy is now this short vid, but I'm so pleased how many of you connected with him.
Im 54 years old. And i am going ti skate till i die. Regards.
Excellent! You do that. Me too! Rolling forever.
Asha you halped me to learn skating. Thank you!
Que história linda, vi o post no Instagram, muito tocante. Muito obrigado por compartilhar Asha. Rest in Peace Tony.
I was thinking that maybe starting to skate at my 40s was a bad idea... This just proof me wrong! Thx for the inspiration!

What a beautiful but equally sad story

Q lindooo😍😍😍
I'm 70. It terrifies me that in 13 years I'll be Tony's age and perhaps taking my last skate into the great skatepark in the unknown. Hmm..??
Why not just stay in the present moment and enjoy that you are skating and loving it? Much nicer.
@@SkatefreshVideos That's good advice!! Right
RIP Tony
Am not even 60yet so there is a lot of hope for me, I am picking up quads but think i will go back with inline skating as its more fun for me
Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. Of course, there is hope! If you want a detailed course made by Asha to take you from the ground up please check here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/
Que bello ejemplo. Note limites por la edad, nada que ver, todo es mental.
😊😊❤🎉
Uau, 👏👏👏👏👌🤼♂️💖
I'm 63 years old and I skate three times in a week
👍
Asha me encantan tus vídeos estoy aprendiendo de ti muchas cosas podrías hacer un vídeo enseñando a patinar hacia atrás en círculos como el patinaje artístico? Me ayudarías mucho mil gracias besitos reina
Hola.
Im starting again after many years... What diameter of wheels to choose, my rolers have 84mm but l feel it is so fast and can not control..
84mm is fine, don't go any larger. You just need to learn how to slow down and stop. That's the most important part of skating, especially in the beginning. Going is easy. Stopping is hard. Once your body knows you can stop you will begin to progress exponentially in all skills. If you don't learn to stop then you'll always feels uneasy and tense.
If you want to invest in your safety and learn a few stopping methods, you can either choose from my stopping method series here;
skatefresh.com/stops-slides/
Or go for the Beginner mixed skills course (which contains the 2 best stopping methods for beginners) here;
skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-beginner-level-full-course/
You can test the mixed course for free by clicking on Free Trial on that page. Hope this helps. Don't leave your skating to chance and learning by trial and error can end up frustrating and painful.
All the best.
Hi, 66 year old Granny needs to learn to skate because I have an 8 and 4 year old grandkids who want me to skate with them. Do I learn to skate on roller skates or in-line skates? Help!!!!
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You can skate with either of them, the basics are identical. Your decision should be mostly based on the kind of surface you will use. If you will skate on a perfect smooth surface like the one you find in rinks either indoors or outdoors then roller skates (quads) are fine. When the surface tends to be rough or changes, usually outdoors, then inlines (blades) are better.
@@SkatefreshVideos Thank you, appreciate your fast response. 😁
