  • The UP Concert Chorus, fresh from their winning the Grand Prize of the 6th International Krakow Choir Festival in Poland last July 2015, where they were the only Asian choir among 24 choirs from 10 countries, sang “Kruhay”, a Benny Fruto Castillon composition at TEDxDiliman last October 11, 2015.
“Kruhay” is Kinaray-a for “Welcome”. Kinaray-a is a language spoken in the island of Panay in the Visayas. The song narrates the festive arrival of the Bornean Datus in what is now known as the province of Antique. They brought the sadok (a wide-brimmed hat or salakot) and the kulintas (necklace) made of gold which they bartered with the local Ati, a negrito ethnic group in the Visayas. This song is accompanied by the traditional ethnic musical instruments kiling-kiling (finger bells) and tultog (bamboo percussion).
The UP Concert Chorus, UPCC, or simply Korus, is the official choir of the University of the Philippines. As an internationally-competitive performing group, Korus has perfected versatility in singing classical, folk, pop and Broadway musical genres with signature vibrant choreography.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I feel so proud because this song tells the history of our island Panay and our province Antique. Malay tribes came to the island and traded a golden helmet and necklace for a piece of land from our ancestors, the Ati (Aeta).

I wonder who are your ancestors, the Atis or the Malay tribe?

Our ancestors were the Ati who inhabited Panay during the pre-Hispanic era. But since Borneans settled in the plains, they had eventually became our anceators too.

    Lyrics:
    Buhay run nga mangadinag-on
    Sa i sara ka baybayyon
    Sa lawod may nagapanong
    baroto kong mga nga dumuluong
    Nagdungka ang tagabornay
    Nagkinasadya ang mga ati
    anda nga ginhalaran
    kag bahul nga kasadyahan
    Ginbaylo kang mga ati
    ang anda nga puloyan
    Ang panay sa sangka saduk
    kag kulintas nga bulawan
    kagsanda ang sararaka
    sa mga kabukidan
    kag ang mga dumuluong
    sa kapatagan sanda nagpuyo

it should be in kinaray a version because this song is a karay a. it is much better if they sang it in KINARAY A VERSION.

No, lmao. It sounds Hiligaynon. Their "O's" should be more of the "U" sound. Like: dinag-on, should've been dinag-un; the "U" articulated as "euh"

Agreed, the accent is a bit off. But I'm not surprised, because it was sung by Tagalogs.
