.....John Lennon was a man of his time. One of the first super rich Rock Stars. New York then, was less formal and easier to go unrecognised. Also away from the UK press.

It’s strange that in 1971 both Yoko and John were very sure that they didn’t want to leave England or this house. I think the issue that kick started when Kyoto was kidnapped. Lennon didn’t consider that he was really selling it when it was passed to Ringo and Ringo said he kept a room for John. All property is hard to predict in terms of value - it’s mostly hindsight game.

As far as I can tell George is really the only Beatle who we know had serious interest in architecture and landscaping. If I had that much money it would be how I spend my days.

I would too. I can't believe someone would want to leave this gorgeous place and live in a noisy, crowded place like NYC. But then I'm a country girl, so I would stay there and ride horses, swim, and live in this pretty place forever.

I have NEVER, understood the attraction for monster estates with monster sized houses. how could anyone call them ''Homes''. Imagine without iphones, trying to find a member of your family , in a place with hundreds of rooms, like Georges place. rediculous. How the hell, did that evil swine who almost murdered George, know where he and His wife were sleeping ? As a investment for the future, maybe. But you could live in a much human -size house, with far safer protection. Still, I'll nevwer have that queery to solve.

The main reason that its worth 10s of millions its because John owned, and not that kitsch pool cover or the cheesy sofas. He moved to new york cause there is where things happened for an artist in the 70s. We did not had internet. You had to shake certain hands and be seen in certain parties. You cannot invest in a solid solo career in your little boat in your fake lake. He lost money? No. He bought for 45.000 pounds and selled for Ringo for millions. And what about the money he made by shaking those hands I mentioned in NYC? The albums he recorded and selled by BEING in new york making business? A fence with grass in it, with a white house and away from the city is a retirement option, and retirement was not what John was looking for. His heirs benefited much more from the royalties he still keep making selling the songs he wrote than a piece of land.

Another thing that is interesting, and probably deserve a deeper dive is, Ringo holding on to that piece of land. It didn't look like anything was on the land. No structures, ponds or manicured gardens etc. Only an open grass field.
Maybe something buried or structure underneath. Lol. Who knows...

    • @Alef.93

It seems that when Ringo owned the property, he didn't take very good care of it. Remember that he spent most of this period struggling with addictions to drugs and drink.
In the few videos from that time, it's visible that the place had become a pasture full of tall weeds, including the lake. The century-old cottage was falling apart.
Although the sheikh who bought the property made some strange design choices, he was responsible for saving it. He rebuilt the cottage to what it was and restored the award-winning historic garden. Sorry for my broken English.

I think, such a property will cost millions every year just to maintain them on a daily level. And I think this was the reason for selling it. Why paying millions every year just to keep a house he was hardly using? Even rich people have to look at the money, otherwise they do not stay rich.

John Lennon left nothing to Julian in his will. John Lennons sister was kicked out of her house that Lennon brought for her by Yoko when he died. Every cent he had went to Yoko, Julian had to buy items that had belonged to his Father at auction. As for Cynthia, Lennon gave her virtually nothing in there divorce settlement and discussed beating her during their marriage in a playboy interview not long before he died. Yoko barred Cynthia from attending his funeral.

It’s not like John Lennon & Ringo Starr sold the property for cash, and put the cash in the 5% CD earning bank account. & then became renters. John Lennon bought his property at Dakota, which is gone more in proportional more to this property. & likewise with Ringo, he bought other properties to which has also gone up. Its not like they sold the property and became renters for 20 years. And besides, it’s not worth the immense amount of taxes and upkeep for someplace you’re not living in.

As to the comment about John may have not been shot down like a dog had he stayed? Well George and Friar Park and 1999 comes to mind that crazy has no fixed address or nationhood. It is interesting that John never returned to England despite having family there yet he did travel the world in the 1970s..and I do consider perhaps there were threats in the UK towards him that no one dared publicly discuss.

If George's intruder had a gun he would have been killed instantly, like Lennon was. He did not, so they were able to overpower him and Olivia hit him with a table lamp, while the staff called the cops. The GUN was the difference! Lennon was dead before anyone knew what was happening. The difference between John living in the UK and New York!
