You the MVP for the intro slow mo.
Thanks for the review!!! Helped a lot!
I have these two lenses. 1.8 is sharper than 1.4 and less chromatic aberration tested in the same aperture f/1.8 and the same light conditions. Bokeh differences are imperceptibly. No reason to waste your money with the 1.4
John Howard which is better 1.8 35mm vs 1.8 50mm
@@KK-ev2xh See on a DX Nikon body 35mm f1.8 is much better for portraits and Headshots. because 1.5 times crop factor means a 35mm lens becomes 52.5mm f1.8 which is more flexible in your work.
whereas a 50mm on a DX Nikon body becomes 82mm after 1.5 time crop.
@@mrvk699 You're all wrong. First, 50mm on Nikon DX is exactly 75mm which is better than 52.5mm For portraits and headshots. With 75mm model's face will look as close to reality as possible, plus you won't get disturbing objects in the background. Bokeh is better on 50mm(75mm) too..
@@shunpo7745 Are you sure about the "reality" part ? I have a crop sensor camera and would like to capture people's faces as they look in real life. And I am going back and forth between buying a 35 mm and a 50mm lens. Getting very confused and angry with myself :D (Also we don't have a fotographers shop where I live so I can't go and try lenses, gonna have to order one.
@@tsenovskiplays7532 Yes, feel free to compare focal lengths on yt for yourself.. Just type portrait distortion. Pro photographers use 135+mm for head shots, that's even better than 50mm on crop. But they are expensive, so 50mm will do the trick trust me
Bruh you're dope, I'm subscribing and looking forward to more content. Keep up the great work!!!!
+Charles Gilmore thanks man! Will do!
This was super helpful, thanks!!
Haha that intro, nice stuff man!
+Eric Rossi lol thanks man!
hey how u doing. i want to ask you if you can take a full body portrait and keep the background in focus with the 50mm 1.8? just like a regular picture without the blur?
great job...I don't own a 50mm lens, but if I had to get one I would go with the 1.4 just for that extra bit of light if required.
Ernesto Sue Photography my thoughts exactly. Although as a Canon shooter being able to shoot at f1.2 is sooooo appealing.
The Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art is no slouch either. Look it up.
Id love if you did a posing video pls. your directions are very good!
This video was right on time! I'm currently trying to get a 50mm lens and I was debating on which one was worth purchasing. I was sold on the 1.8 because of the extra sharpness but you made a great point about being able to shoot at 1.4 in low light. I will most likely go with the 1.4. Thanks for another great video bro!
+Deon Turner no problem man. As long you nail focus on the 50 1.4 @1.4 it should be plenty sharp.
Good Video. I got the 50 1.4. I wanted the extra low light. I can shoot at 1.6 and use a neutral density filter with a single flash to shoot in broad daylight also.
LMAO XD Love those funny skit! :) Great video too
50 1.8 is MUCH sharper but I think the 1.4 has a better rendition of the background and OOF areas.
Really great video. Far better to show the lenses in real world practice and post processing than many other reviews I've seen. Personally, I think the 1.4g has better colours as well... but that's subjective, and just me :) Thanks for the video - subscribed!
Incisive, very creative and entertaining review, with much food 4 thought. Thank
you very much.
I used to have the 1.8 but didn't like the bokeh quality with it and kind of avoided using it. I went and got Sigmas 50mm 1.4 Art lens, and use it all the time now. (Before going with Sigma, I checked sample images of the Nikon 1.4, and it seemed to have the same kind of non-pleasing bokeh, while the Sigma seemed way better... and as a bonus, the Sigma is way sharper.)
+BobMerlinx yeah, the Sigmas are by far some of the sharpest lenses I've ever seen.
I would like to change my 1.8 but the price to have a Sigma is very very expensive.. :'(
yea but sharpness isnt everything and sigma lenses lack the micro contrast of less expensive lenses typically. I'd rather use a vintage nikkor 50mm 1.4 then a autofocus sigma 50mm 1.4.
I like how in the first shoot you're in the gazebo and she's just out there on the path lol
Hi there, I am trying to use 50mm 1.4 with the nikon D3200 and at f1.4-1.8 my shots are not sharp. Is this the body or the lens ? I have tried higher shutter speeds and variations but it does not seem to be sharp. And you have to be very steady. It’s just not as good as other youtubers shooting on higher end Nikon’s
Very good informatief video.GOOD DONE.
Q: When shooting the 50mm at 1.8 are you placing the face/eye of your subject in the center of the frame since that’s the sharpest point ? Reason I ask is because the edges of lens on my 50mm at 1.8 are soft.
Honestly that depends on the shoot. I never put my subject at the extreme corners or edges of the frame. So even if it's not as sharp on the edges. That doesn't matter much to me. As long as it's sharp enough for the rule of thirds or some fun framing. I'm fine with the results.
The 50mm f/1.8 was one of the first full frame lenses I picked up when I still only had DX bodies. Was JUST SHOPPING F/1.4's today on eBay, Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc...you saved me a few hundred $$$'s Ike, thanks; perfect timing and luck I ran into your comparison today. Ordered the 85mm f/1.8 instead. Can stop using my 105mm f/2.8 macro for portraits soon!
Hey, no problem Rick. A small part of me honestly wishes there was more of a difference in the lenses because then I would have a legitimate excuse to want to buy the more expensive lens besides ego and being able to shoot at f1.4 lol
What is the you use for this comparison
Finally able to watch this! Lol I moved so much wth you are too nice 😭 haha but again thank you soo much for letting me join you on the shoot, I learned a lot and it was so fun. Hope I can join you again soon, haha I promise not to shift so much omg lol x
+Antaya Burns lol you actually did a great job! I have no complaints!!! I look forward to working with you again soon!
"1.4 in sharp enough for what I do" ... This was the advice that make me choose for the f1.4... I will make portrait, edit and post on socials, sharpness gap between 1.4 and 1.8 is incomparable, FOR ME, with the amazing bokeh you can get with 1.4 one
Nice tutorial, thanks man!
All things being equal a 1.8 will be sharper than a 1.4 and with fewer aberations, because there's fewer elements and less light bending. The advantage of the 1.4 or 1.2 comes into scope when shooting in _very_ low light because modern sensors are so much better, or bokeh balls. One possibility is to get an 85mm 1.4 as your catalogue/fashion lens, but go 1.8 for 50mm and 24mm or a 35mm.
Hi @ophelia What would you get for nikon f3 ? What 50 mm ? F1.8 or f 1.4 ?
@@lorilima5744 Nikon F3 HP shooting film? I personally like lighter/smaller lenses and I'm less keen on bokeh, so I lean toward 1.8. I'd also consider vintage lenses: One of my absolute favourites is the Nikkor 105 2.5 AI-S. It's takes absolutely beautiful portraits: Steve McCurry used it to take _Afghan Girl,_ and it's fairly affordable. If you're on budget the Tamron SP 90mm 2.5 Macro is wonderful, it not the absolute sharpest, and has minor CA, but it's not far off the competition for usually 1/3 their price and can double up for portrait or macro photography.
Ophelia De Beaufort hi i am not very keen to bokeh. I considered the nikon 50mm f1.4 aí because it would be more versátile when I would shoot in low light situations. I just hope that i can scape of bokeh efect because i do not like it as well .
Ophelia De Beaufort I Will use it with a nikon f3
Ophelia De Beaufort i like small lenses as well for vídeo , i shoot With a z Cam ec2 . But for photo I do not care if i get médium size lenses .
What are your thoughts on Nikon 50mm f1.4 D lens (old manual lens) for about under 200$ (the currency iS Rupees) in my country
Well Done Video great info thank you very Much
You’re welcome!
The 1,8 is sharper and has also clearly more contrast.
Great vid, thank you for your content and contribution...
+Jrome719 no problem man!
i have also owned the 1.8. yes, it is sharper. yes, the colour rendition is on par with the 1.4. however, the out of focus areas appear much smoother. this is why i ditched the 1.8. additional sharpness can be added in post.
+Castiel Diallo agreed
Photomeike thx for the vid. It really made my decision much easier 👍 I'll go for the 1.4 - more bokeh and more light in low-light situations for a relatively low price. Great content man! Keep on creating 😊
I had a chance to borrow a 1.4 50mm for a concert I was shooting, ended up using the 1.8 for the majority of the concert and I was rather disappointed with the 1.4 cause I heard so many good things about it.
I've had these both, still have the 1.8G, just because it's only worth like $150 used so I'm keeping it for my daughter. The truth is yes, they are both sharp, but honestly I never liked either one as far as overall image quality. There just is nothing special about either one and therefor I gave up on them, but I was soon to fall in love with something else, because an amazing deal showed up for me. A friend was selling his 58mm f1.4G and only for $750, friend discount lol, so I started watching and reading reviews and decided why not as I couldn't lose money if I decided to resell it someday. I was literally blown away by the 58mm f1.4G and it's image quality is beyond special, it's unique and just amazing! Nothing really compares to it unless you have $3k plus for the old Nikon Noct 58mm f1.2 lens. The bokeh, contrast, saturation and build quality of the 58mm f1.4G is amazing and it really helps separate your images from the crowd, if only ever so slightly. I'm a working professional and photojournalist so I can and need lenses that will give me any sort of edge, like the 400mm f2.8 FL and 70-200mm f2.8 FL, both of which I depend on almost daily to achieve this goal. My equipment is tools, not jewels and therefor I buy everything I can used and therefor get almost everything at 50-65% of the price new. I rarely ever lose money reselling later this way and photography has become pretty much only money making, it's never money costing!
Oh you got a great deal on that 58mm. I want to pick up the 50mm f1.2 for the Nikon Z6 when that comes out next year! Although I should probably wait a while and buy it used. Lol.
I have the 50mm 1.4 nikon and it's awesome only downside is I have a DX sensor camera
Great Video, I think for the difference it makes I would use and keep the 1.8 however I would like to see some comparable pictures as someone mentioned using a tripod ( nonshake ) could prove to be even better for the 1.4
But enjoyed the video!
great review of these two great lenses. Thanks
You are welcome! Thank you!
Great comparison review. Thank you 🙏
Thank you!
What Lens is best for accentuating the eyes? I mean in general not just between the two lens seen in the video.
I would says something like a longer portrait lens like an 85mm or longer. That way you can get closer to the face while keeping distortion at a minimum and giving the most flattering angle.
It's more fair to do this comparison on a tripod only changing lenses!!! same settings, exact same distances, and no camera shake!!!
Very helpful video. Thank you..
You’re welcome!
Compare both in low light and f/1.4 lens will kick the ass of f.1.8 way harder.
Bro do you recommend the d750 is looking to get one what would you say d750 or the d800 or the d850?
Well the D850 is the best of the bunch. But the D750 is a solid camera and still holds up to this day. But Nikon is replacing it with the rumored D780 real soon. So unless you need a camera today. Either get the D850 or wait for the D780.
so does this mean the wider the aperature the faster the shutter can be? noticed the shutter speed is faster on teh 1.4 than the 1.8... thanks in advance
the shutter speed is faster on the 1.4 in this example because the 1.4 lets in more light than the 1.8, so you have to make up for that by using a faster shutter speed or lowering your iso in this case 100 was the lowest.
8:36 but an ear on 1.4G is more sharper :) back-focus or focus-shift detected! - normal situation for 1.4G :)
I got a Canon EF 50mm F/1,4 for 195 dollars, it's nuts !!! I'm so damn excited to shoot with it !
You got that for a steal. Lol
YoYople got mine for 120 lol
Just got one for 170$! For this price I believe it’s a must have !
Shooting specs: ISO, and etc...??? Assuming you were in A and wide open (1.4 or 1.8)???
Disregard, got it saw the files...
Thank you for this excellent review/sample photos!
Yeah, you get a "little" more bokeh with the f1.4, buut..for the difference in price, I'm thinking, may as well go up to the 85mm.
good point, especially if most portraits are outdoors!
"For only $200 more dollars" LOL. And it's hilarious to me that people buy these lenses only to shoot wide open or one stop down from it lol. Pity a lot of you guys never see f/4 or smaller lol (and no, I'm not a shallow depth of field hater. I like that stuff, too. I'm just not obsessed with blurring the background to oblivion for almost everything). Please don't misunderstand me. I actually own the Canon 50mm 1.4 and at 1.4 it's not bad. The 1.8 version, at least on Canon's end, really does seem to be sharper overall then the 1.4. I usually shoot the 50 1.4 at 2.8 and narrower apertures (I do a lot of indoor shoots and on location stuff with flash). f/4 is actually one of my favourite apertures. I watch your vids regularly, bud. Keep them coming. Good stuff.
Hey what kinda camera bag is that? @photomelke
Think Tank messenger style bag.
Thanks I've been looking for a bigger, deeper camera bag
Man that bag holds damn neat everything with all its pockets and pouches. Lol. I love it.
good one
I am a canon 80d user.I wanna buy a prime lens. I am not a professional photographer. Which lens do u prefer me to buy? 50mm 1.4 usm or 50mm 1.8 stm ?
If you can afford it. Spring for the 50mm f1.4. The Canon 50mm f1.8 is very soft wide open at f1.8. But if your budget is limited then you have to do what you have to do. But the 50mm 1.4 is much better.
@@Photomeike actually i was about to buy the 50 mm 1.4 but was confused what to buy. I needed suggestion. Thanks. I will get 50 mn 1.4.
Hi Meike can you plz include 58 as well as in these two..
Thanks
Singh. H Give me a few weeks to put that together!
Thanks Photomeike , will look forward to it. I really enjoy your videos,..Stay cool :-)
is shorty in the video single?
You don’t use lens hoods when you shooting outdoor ?
+Sergio Rosales i do. But lately I’ve just been to lazy to grab them.
His hand is the lense hood lol
Does the 1.4 matches with the Nikon z6?
Yes it does. It works just fine!
I have one: 50mm f1.8G. I love it
I came here to see if it was worth getting a 1.4 since I already have the 1.8. I don't see much difference except 1.8 appear sharper and slightly less Bokeh. I mainly shoot travel portrait photography so being able to see the Eiffel Tower in the background of my subject is perfect. So to me, it's not worth getting the 1.4 lens. Thanks for sharing.
Accurate analysis!
The differences in bokeh between the two are negligible. It’s better to start off with an image that is sharp and blur it in post processing than to start with a soft image and sharpen it in post processing. 50mm f1.8 wins.
But you can't gather more light in post processing on 1.8. I like natural blurry background rather than faking it in post processing lol.
i have the same issue with models when i say dont move.....why do they move.....lol
man she's gorgeous!
50 1.4 scientifically has better background blur - 9 blade aperture & no aspherical elements. Depends how your eyes interpret it.
If the 1.4 let’s more light in why do a video outside .. I wanna see how it shoots in low light situations lol just saying
Both are better than the 2000 Dollar Leica M 50mm 2,0 summicron.Believe ,i had that Leica lens. You pay only for the Leica name.
Can you compare Nikon 50 1.4g vs Nikon 50 1.8S please? Still hesitant to let go of my 1.4 as I am also a ‘bokewhore’ person. I’m afraid I won’t be very happy with the 1.8S . Thanks in advance :)
1.8S destroys everything, even sigma 1.4
A couple things: good video, it helped with my decision. The videography was good, and the side by side picture comparison was helpful. I'd say from the pictures you used, the 1.8 looks like it has a bit more color saturation. Your bokeh argument is understandable, but just as you indicated, it's a marginal difference - similar to sharpness - and thus comes down to preference. To me that's a tie, but the better color saturation on the 1.8 makes it the winner. helpful video. Oh, and one more thing....lucky dog!
If you shoot in raw it doesnt really matter. The best oart going 1.4 is u can get faster shutter speed in low light condition. I use only 50 and 85 primes for portrait. Sometimes i rent 35mm prime for wedding. Its worthed.
nice video does the model have a social media?
+Jeremy Coates yes! It's shown within the first 60 seconds of the video. Lol
Photomeike I missed that lol
Excellent video ... I'm still on the fence because the difference is very subtle. LOL
Better sharpness vs Bokeh/Low Light ... still deciding which I value most.
Thanks for the video!
Nice beaver
I saw some reviews on the sigma 50mm 1.4 that lens is a game changer
nikon 1.8S is slightly better than sigma 1.4 and less costly
Sigma lenses are game changer
I'll say, the 1.4 and 1.8 is not really that much differences, they're practically identical. If you buy the 1.4 lens, you're only paying for the name than the glass as oppose to buying the 1.8 and get your money's full worth for the glass.
She is fire!
Lol nice intro
+Ian & Kristen Nelson lol thanks!
they look litterly the same in my opinion, but I like the 1.8 a little more, idk but it looks a little sharper
The only real advantage of the 1.4 is the 1.4 aperture. If you don’t need f1.4 then the 1.8 is perfectly fine
Do u use photoshop or Not ?
Yes I do. But not on these images.
I Buy Nikon d800 which best linse Foto shooting ? 50mm 1.8D ?
you want sharper go 2.8 is the best
1.4g is for full frame camera, that is why it is expensive.
So is the 1.8. There's no 50 mm lens for DX bodies from nikon. They do have 35 mm DX 1.8g though.
1.4 has bad focus issue on most Nikon d7xx and d8xx series. You have to make af adjustment on body to make it pin sharp. A lot of people say 1.4 is not as sharp @f1.8 compared to 1.8 because they never use z6/z7 to mount these two on a tripod. Both are tack sharp both have ugly bokeh to be honest both have harsh highlights roll off. The only visible difference is 2/3 of a stop. Nikon never had a complete 50mm until z mount 50/1.8S that thing is unbelievable. Every Nikkor 50mm ais af-D afs G have double Gauss design are of similar rendition.
Thank you for trying provide information to for shutterbugs. In your 1.8 vs 1.4 experiment you have too many independent variables. You change lens and shutter speeds. I would suggest that you repeat this experiment but keep everything the same with the exceptions of the lens. Keep the same distance, shutter speed and ISO. The only change should be the lens.
+Rodney Williams keep in mind that in some of the photos I shot F2 and 1.8 on both lens with the same shutter speed, ISO, and distances.
shes easy on the eyes
your background music is very loud
1.4 perform ok because it is good light. Try this at night with hard lighting conditions 1.4 sucks compared to 1.8. AF is sloooowww and wide open soft like a 70s porn movie. 1.8 does much better in bad light
For such a sharp Bride both lenses aint sharp enuff.🤟
You look likes Kanye West 😱
Aayyyee. I get that every now and then.
I can't see the difference
wow that lady is insanely hot. Jeez.
lol
1.8 is sharper
I think you need a model that listens to what you say. "don't move" *moves instantly* Fuck that annoyed me.
Great comparison otherwise! Looks like 1.8 will be better for my application :)
Do you even know how to shoot?
Bang bang.. how’s that
Photo-Me-Ike Bro you should use your phone for shooting
That’s actually an idea I’m working on. Google Pixel vs Nikon Z6! You already predicted my next video. Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈🎊
Photo-Me-Ike make sure to stop at McDonald’s
Wait what 😂. Ohhhhhh on location challenge. Great idea! Like a restaurant or something
