You'd run that fast, too, if a giant red arrow were following you.
I sometimes see red arrows following me, but I just try to act nonchalant and maintain a steady pace.
Dude...that made me pee a little....

I'm actually dying from this

Sophie Miller you girl are gorgeous, keep up the good work, someone give her a award
I ran track for years and so did my daughter. Outta hundreds of races I've never seen someone 1/3 a lap back with 1/2 a lap left to run win....that was incredible. She ran 300 meters faster than these others ran 200 meters.
thats amazing when you put it like that ; "she ran 300 faster than they ran 200" seems impossible.
She tapped into that mindset that the Navy SEALs have learned how to hone so well.... The reason selection is so brutal for that group, isn't because they want to see who's physically strongest and has the highest pain tolerance, not even close. It's to find out who has the MENTAL FORTITUDE to make it through those trials. Anyway, long story not so short, once they've whittled down the men to the handful who innately possess the right attitude, THEN they teach them how to turn that mental fortitude into a freaking Super Power. This is the same phenomenon as a mother suddenly finding the strength to lift a car that's got her child pinned, or how someone can suddenly lift someone else up and out of an emergency. She was 100% in the zone, no mental inhibitions, just using every fiber of her strength to accomplish her mission. Each and every one of us possess this sort of ability, scaled to our individual body's and various limitations that come with those of course. Just remember, limits are fun to break, so whatever yours may be, go for it!!
DAMNNNNNNNNN. That girl went into a beast mode.
Also went into pancake mode.
This what I respect in athletes. A girl like this not accepting defeat and literally throwing herself face first onto hot asphalt while traveling at 10mph in order to guarantee victory.
You have those viral videos of runners who are about to win a race stop to help a hurt opponent cross the finish line, and I'm sorry, that makes for a good video...but as an athlete myself, I just can't respect that. In order to pay tribute to a fallen/defeated opponent you treat the competition with respect. You go over after you've won and say "good job."
gypsyauh2o maybe not track athelete though? That's not asphalt.
Joking aside, I agree, these kind of videos are so much better, it's more about who has the better fire. Who's willing to sprint themselves to death? That makes a really good video.
TheUnPlayable: Yep they pretty much (3 in front after hand off) all hit the wall & tensed up so bad they were running super slow motion.
BBBYpsi the wall usually refers to a depletion of glycogen storages rather than a tremendous seize of lactic acid.
These announcers are snapping pencils as they speak
HughMungus LMFAO
I can't unhear it now, all I can imagine is these two guys watching in anticipation and reaching into their respective pencil bucket to continuously snap them in half
I’m dead😂😂😂😂😂
Dubbed in a few years after the race. Perhaps that’s why it’s so amusing.
too funny
She gave a quarter of a lap away and ran flat stick from beginning to end. That's not a heart pumping that's an engine.
lol
Rationalist Society it had to hurt too
wait, what does this mean?
Rationalist Society way to put it
Nah, other girls were running a little too comfortable. They didn't try their hardest.
I need a tshirt that reads "UCC, from the depths of hell!!!"
I made that tshirt it's in my store comment on my channel and I'll send you the link with a discount if you want? :)
Every once in awhile I come back and watch this. This is still the greatest (distance behind/time to catch up) comeback I have ever seen in track and field at any level.
same. it amazes me everytime😳
Some observations from a one time, longtime track coach....that poor kid wearing yellow in front is likely a distance runner and probably had run the mile (or even the 2-mile) shortly beforehand, which is likely why her coach had her run anchor.
That team probably was short a runner and asked her to fill in, and she likely begrudgingly agreed, as even their eventual fifth place finish would pick up team points....she was brutally slow at this distance and has the look and gait of a distance runner. Perhaps her coach said "I know you're tired after running the mile, just jog it and finish." - who knows for sure.
Surprisingly, she unwittingly played a big part in the outcome, as the next two girls (striped jersey and blue/white singlet) seemed to push too hard early to catch her....if she had not been where she was, those two probably would have paced better and held on....
One more thing - having coached both genders, the first thing I observed is that, unlike boys, the ability gap between girls can be huge, thus the reason you see so many monster comebacks in girl races, much more so than boys. That seems to be the case here, that girl in red had a gigantic disparity in talent...still, have to love the comeback, she gave it her all in a relay race, which shows heart.
@@hellogoodbye4061 I think you are right on. The gal who won the race, Phil Healey, was a 200 & 400 meter runner who later competed for Ireland in the Tokyo Olympics, And, just to add some flavor, the "future Olympian, Michelle Finn" that she ran down did indeed compete for Ireland in the 2016 and 2021 Olympics but, her event was the steeplechase.......a far cry from the 400 meters.

Corniest commentary ever. It must have been hard to keep talking with their balls being squeezed tighter and tighter in a vise the entire race. BTW, she was only 3 seconds behind when she got the baton. Nothing special here.
@R GT *You* look again. The girl in stripes crosses the line at :04. At :11 you can see the eventual winner was 3 seconds behind her, meaning she crossed the line at about :07. She finished at 1:04+, giving a split of close to :58. I ran :57.6 in 8th grade.
A "quarter lap ahead" is only 5 seconds? LOL!!! That would be a :20 400. 😂😂😂😂 You've never run a track race in your life, have you?
She's actually less than 1/8th of a lap ahead, roughly 8 seconds ahead of the eventual winner, and finished about 1.5 seconds behind, giving her a :68 split. Pretty pathetic for an anchor.

400m split ? Read further down !
Whatever you think, I still believe it is one of the most impressive comebacks ever (with Floria Guei in an other 4x400m).
After spending wayyyyyy too much time watching the video dozens of times, I calculated her split time to be between 51'' and 52".
I don't know how old she was at the time but since then, she got the 100 m and 200 m Irish records and she has also run the 400m in around 52s.
As far as I know, she's on her way to the Olympics next summer (while studying/working as a nurse), so kudos to you Phil !!!
One of the most awe inspiring examples of what can be achieved if you never accept what most would say can't be done. It brought tears to my eyes 'cuz (as a former runner) I now she had nothing left in the tank at the finish. I want my young daughter to see this video and remember the many lessons it teaches about LIFE. Wow!

A mark in life and on her face, ouch!
Semi final of the World indoor is alright... 11th fastest woman in the world... Final of the World University games... Yeah, she's alright.
She ran about :58. I hope to God she does more than that with her life, because it's nothing special to beat three people ahead of you who run so slow.
.........and also on her face.
@@cy8685 Definitely not. The 2nd placed left with 0:04 sec of video so she did 400m in 0:59, the 3rd in striped shirt left with 05 sec of video, arriving at about 1:05, must have done 59:30. There was another runner who, right after the start, goes through the same spot about 3 seconds later, let's say she must have left with 0:08 and is overtaken by the winner with about 100m left. The winner (Phil Healy) was one second behind her when she passed the 150m, I can risk saying that she left 2 seconds later, so it would be 0:10 seconds of video and if she arrived with 1:04 she must have done 400m in 54 or in the best hypothesis 53 seconds which is her personal record in 2018 (Wikipedia) // Sorry for my english, i'm using translator.
My track coach used to say that if you don't collapse after finishing a race, you didn't give it your best or your all. This is why. Truly inspiring.

"look at Mills! LOOK AT MILLS!" But this one! "UP FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL!" I love it!
I ran highschool track in the 100m and usually the anchor position in the 4x100m relay. I only ever ran the 400m once - couldn't pace myself and used up all the gas halfway thru. I never forgot the feeling of watchin' everyone pass me at the 200m mark. I always marveled at people who could sustain the effort in the 400m.

@@---bk4lg Actually this is a comment I made earlier in this video which might clear things up.
***Slight observations from a one time track coach....that poor kid wearing yellow in front is likely a distance runner and probably had run the mile (or even the 2-mile) beforehand (a race run just before the relays), which is likely why her coach had her run anchor.

That was my thought too, a distance runner filling in on a relay to help her team. She has a nice stride, she just doesn’t have the turnover rate for the middle distances. It’s also important that strategy sometimes dictates putting the fastest runner on a leg other than the anchor. They probably put their fastest runner 1, 2, or 3 to give this girl a couple more minutes rest.
Wow... I think she started 3/4 of a lap behind! She must have been sprinting from the start to even have a hope of catching up ... then when she saw everyone up front dying she was able to borrow some energy to keep her pace up for a strong finish - then she remembered she took 125% and had to return it, so she took a nap.
I come back to watch this every once in a while, especially when I see another video that claims to be the best comeback in track history. This one has them all beat, hands down.
This never gets old...you can't beat that desire to win

The fact that ESPN didn't sign them immediately is an absolute travesty
You might wonder how is it that someone can win from that far behind in one lap? It seems almost impossible. So I analyzed the tape. The woman in yellow is running unusually slow for a competitive 400m race. Michelle Finn (in blue) ran a 62 (she's a distance runner so its to be expected that she isn't that fast), which means the gal in yellow ran at best a 68. To put these times in perspective, elite female sprinters run 48-51, and good high school/college runners are in the 52 - 59 range. No wonder the gal in red is able to catch the leaders. A fantastic comeback, but only possible because those up front ran so slow. You might wonder why are such normal people competing against really fast people? Well, what likely happened is that those teams with the big lead at the start of hte lap put their fastest runners up first and so they are the teams 4th fastest runner being caught by the other teams 1st fastest runner.
+matthewxcountry Thank you! I was saying the same thing 6 months ago. If there was a real 400m runner in this race she would have looked like a goddess compared to these runners. Including the one that caught everyone.
What happened is Phil Healy is a world class runner and she chased down people who are not in her class.
She ran a 54 second lap.
@kwejeebo. They might not have put their slowest runners on the anchor. But they were significantly slower than the one who came through fast at the end.
It looked like an incredible comeback but the times weren't great. There's no overall timer so can't compare how the times were relative to the other legs either.
Its totally apparent you have "NEVER" run the 400 or the 4x400 relay. You have "NO CLUE" what you're talking about.
This is the first race video i just had to immediately rewatch.

@@hellogoodbye4061 I'm curious, how is the look of a long distance vs short distance runner different? I don't know much about running.
@@grumbles Good question I hear often....several factors....first their gait shows a lot, their legs and chest area tend to be thinner while sprinters have thicker strong thighs, which show excelleration power. and naturally, of course, you simply time them and see how they do speed and endurance wise....my first day of practice, I time every athlete in a 50 yard dash, that time will tell a lot...then a few practices in, you test their endurance....I have timed some runners who are abysmally slow in sprints (like the final leg for that team way ahead) yet excel in long distance and vice versa....some of my best sprinters would run cross country in the fall to get into shape, yet only prove average on the team in this area....hope this helps.
