    We found Fiestaware when going through my grandparents' house! The orange ones were the worst for radioactivity, and that's exactly the color we found.

    fun fact: your house actually has some radioactive particles, located in your smoke detector which is usually 1.3 grams of americium

      Modern ionization type smoke detectors contain about .29 micrograms Am-241. (.00000029 grams) 1.3 grams would make about 4 million detectors :)

    Just for refference, two sieverts can cause radiation sickness, so if you stand near the shoe x-ray machine for 40 seconds you can get radiation sickness.

    I used to read old comic books that still had adverts for the atomic energy lab kits in the back cover. I was so excited and I thought they were still for sale. I begged my mother to buy me one but she broke my dreams when she told me they were dangerous and discontinued.

    The foot X-ray was called The Floroscope. Also Doris Gray had a makeup removal cleanser that came with an atomic test booklet. You put radioactive drift on your face, then clean it off with product then use provided Geiger counter to make sure it was gone. We sure luved nuclear powered things in the 50’s😆

    X-ray shoe-fitting devices were not just in the 1930s. I was born in 1947 & as a boy, I loved going to the shoe store & looking at my feet in the machine.

    Radioactive lighting rods were pretty nasty (well, still in use). Also, radioactive camera lenses can be quite a problematic to repair people (no harms done to the one who use it). Not to mention concrete in nonventilated areas (spoiler alert: radon)

    The jar could be kinda useful. If it wouldn't be toxic and it would be guaranteed that none of the radioactive materials will get into the water, it would be entirely safe. Water affected by radiation is not radioactive itself and radiation could kill some bacteria inside making the water technically cleaner than before.

    I remember, I had to have a test where I swallowed a radioactive pill. Went back the next day and was told to leave the waiting room because I was disrupting others scans. A pregnant lady put her hands over her fetal baby. 🤷‍♀️
