  • We have all heard of the idea that travelling can 'broaden the mind' but is this the case in reality? Do we start the journey with preconceived ideas about the place we are about to visit? Sara is interested in culture and human interaction. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I'm not Indian, it's been two years since I've moved to India for work. People here are very kind. The very first day when I moved in to an apartment, I had no groceries or utensils to cook. I thought of ordering food, but my neighbour brought me hot meals that she cooked even though I never asked. She don't know English but she can understand a little and I don't speak any Indian languages.

I am from India. I travelled a lot within India and to over 25 countries before I came to USA 23 years ago.
I was appalled by the ignorance of the people here about 1/7th of humanity, the world’s largest democracy, the oldest civilization and the most diverse population - a country that. accounted for over a quarter of the world’s GDP until 200 years ago!
On my first flight within America (within a day of landing) I found myself sitting next to an Air Hostess who had completed her shift and was on her flight back home. It was a long flight - from New York to Seattle and we talked on various topics. A couple of hours into our chat, she asked me where I live. I told her I live in India and was on my first visit to USA. She was surprised and said: “But you speak so good English”
I said: “So? Why is it so surprising? English is one of the two major language of National Commerce, Law and Government in country and it’s English speaking population is probably larger than USA (Officially it is second to India, but that is only because it is not the first language of most people who speak the language and the Indian Census only recorded their first or primary language).
As an Air Hostess she must have travelled a lot and met many people from around the world, If this was the extent of her information, what could I expect of others I thought. My expectations fell to the floor and nothing surprised me after that. I had just come into fish bowl - a continent sized island separated by thousands of miles of sea from the rest of the world - physically and in every other way.

This is what I always wanted foreigners to notice other than food, colours, diversity....the attitude most of us have towards others...the sense of ACCEPTANCE.... No need to chng yourself.... No need to adjust yourself to the culture...you will be accepted by everyone.... They will welcome you whole heartedly....
