Love Thy Neighbour was ITVs answer to Till Death Us Do Part, but far more reliant on cheap laughs. I grew up in the 70s, and it was considered acceptable then to laugh at racist jibes. To be fair to LTN, Eddie was usually shown-up for his ignorance and stupidity, and Bill was the one who had the last laugh. Even so, it gets its biggest laughs from blind insults, and it's a show that should stay in the 70s. People are still free to watch it if they choose, but no place for it on any TV channel today.

When it was the beginning of realisation that racism was wrong and the Eddie's of this world were idiots, it was funny. But, decades later, racism is still going on and Eddie's like yourself persist in their idiocy, it's no longer funny but an irritating malicious taking the mickey experience. And how do I know your part of the problem, cause you used the term woke and because you think racism is ok, just a bit of fun, nothing to take too serious. How many times did Bill and Barbie feel like they were so deeply wounded that they were going to have to leave and go back to Trinidad. Eddie's really funny and someone to laugh at, I enjoy the show too, but how funny would it be if you were black and lived next door to an Eddie?

And before you reply that Rudolph Walker's character dishes out as much racism as Eddie, the point is that he is part of a minority group thus Black racism has an entirely different quality. This twisted idea of 'balance' is absurd: "snowflake!","knickers!" ffs!
Mind you my greatest complaint is that the acting is dreadful, the script witless and stupid and the whole a pustule on the face of British television. I'm 62 and grew up on Monty Python, and that this could have been made at the same time as 'Fawlty Towers' is almost incredible. The wit and brilliance of these two had more to do with the beaching of this bloated comedy whale than any government action!

I remember being on the three day week during Ted Heaths reign as Priminister. I also remember the Bus Strike and Power Workers strike during this period. We never knew when we would be in darkness or when the Buses would go off. It was a scary time because the Yorkshire Ripper was still at large and people were terrified to go out in the dark.( As most of you will know he murdered 13 women and attempted to murder seven more) The Manchester Police could not catch him. He was on the loose for well over a decade then finally the Police in my home Town of Sheffield in South Yorkshire caught him on a car technicallity. Then they noticed him hiding something. It turned out to be Hammers he had used on his victims.
Sheffield had a Steel Industry the most famous and largest in the world. During the Thatcher years this Industry was crushed to nothing and we all lost our Jobs. Along with this our South Yorkshire Coal Mining industry was also crushed when she closed down our pits. There were countless Strikes during her reign in power. our Miners. went on strike and following her orders the Police came down hard on the Miners lots were brutally attacked with Truncheons the police even brutally attacked the then leader of the NUM (National Union of Mine Workers).Arthur Scargil. She also sent Secret Intelligence Services to spy on every move the Mining Unions made, then crushed them to a pulp. She also caused chaos within our Housing System when her right to buy bill came in to force letting people buy our Council House's which meant there were less Houses to rent to the poor.
During the year of 1926 the whole of the UK came out on strike while under Prime minister Stanley Baldwins Government he was also a Tory just like Heath and Thatcher. In this year the workers had turn to the Unions as they were betrayed by .the later that year Labour Leader Ramsay McDonald who held a vote of no confidence to the strikes.

alfie081 The Yorkshire Ripper killings were not publicised until later in the 1970's and whilst there is speculation that he was killing since 1969 the officially recognised offences were committed between 1975 and 1981.
Although she became leader of the Conservatives in 1976 it was not she did not become prime minister until 1979. She promised that if she became prime minister every council house owner would have the right to buy and this is what happened.
The early 1970's were a struggle for many people, however the actual unemployment rate amongst men was low in comparison to current levels and there were many more women with children who were full-time home makers.

The language may not be PC by modern standards but I don't view this show as racist. The humour comes from showing us how silly we are when we we fail to tolerate and show prejudice to others.

The way you get up from the beached whale position as a heavily pregnant woman is, you roll onto your side, get onto all 4's then push yourself up from there. I had to do it all the time, as my useless, now ex-husband, promised to exchange the mattress on the floor in his ex-bachelor pad, for a real bed, but never did. And as he was never home, I had to handle myself whatever happened. I became quite the expert at ex-beach waling myself!
