Chad Daybell pleads not guilty to murder and other charges

- ST ANTHONY - Chad Daybell pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning to charges connected to the deaths of three people.
Daybell, 52, appeared for his District Court Arraignment before District Judge Steven Boyce. During the hearing, Daybell entered a not guilty plea on each charge handed down last month by a Fremont County Grand Jury.
Daybell and his wife Lori Vallow Daybell are accused of various crimes, including first-degree murder for the deaths of Chad’s first wife, Tammy Daybell, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow - Lori’s two children.
In attendance at the hearing were three of Chad’s children, Garth Daybell, Seth Daybell and Emma Murray. They sat behind him stoned-faced while he spoke the words not guilty.
Colby Ryan, the older brother of Tylee and JJ sat in the courtroom gallery next to JJ’s grandmother, Kay Woodcock. The two held hands while tears came from their eyes.
Law enforcement, members of the public and the media were also in attendance at the hearing.
Lori’s case is on hold after Boyce put a stay or temporary pause on the case after a psychologist deemed her not competent for legal proceedings. On Tuesday, Boyce officially committed Lori to the Department of Health and Welfare for mental health treatment.
Wednesday marks the one-year mark since investigators found the bodies of Tylee and JJ buried on Daybell’s Salem property. He was arrested and been in jail on other felonies related to the case until the murder charges came down last month.
I wasn't surprised at all that he pled not guilty. He and Lori aren't known for taking responsibility for their actions.

My opinion- he’s going to blame it all on Lori & her brother. IF he had not said what he did about the animal cemetery.. he would probably have had a better chance with that defense. That’s gonna be hard to overcome.

When he left the court he didn't even look back to his children. If he were my dad I wouldn't be able to stand by him, if I even had an inkling that he might have killed my mother. He's a monster and I hope he gets what he deserves.
Unfortunately no matter how much of a monster someone is, it doesn’t stop their family loving them / remembering them as they were ‘before’. That’s why many people also refer to the perpetrators family as victims too, because they have a huge journey ahead of them in trying to understand the why’s / what’s / who’s / when’s & the impact that has on them, their relationships, & they also go through their own grieving process too which can take a very long time.
I have no remorse for his kids. They have mocked this case from the jump. Seems like an awful lot of people have forgot about all those passive aggressive social media posts they made. Trashy. I feel bad for Tammy's family who are watching her children not want to know the truth, nevermind sell justice for their mother. Calling Lori their stepmom 2wks after their mothers death. The disrespect goes on & on.
My dad always said. He would standby my brother regardless.. but chads a monster who’s twisted in the head! He probably has a gf on the outside lined up for when him & Lori are charged.
If I did something remotely as that of what he's accused of, I personally couldn't look in my children's direction. Don't get me wrong. I think he is involved and deserves punishment. Just saying, not looking at his kids may not mean what it seems.
Each person has to decide how they will feel and act.
The state NEEDS to do a thorough autopsy on Alex Cox, there is NO WAY his ever so convenient death was natural causes!!!

If I was the judge before reading the charges I would have said “Mr Daybell as you would have already foreseen long ago, with your visions, you are being charged with the following offences and the death penalty in this current reincarnation of your life”.

There was another news article way back that mentioned pink foam was found in Alex's mouth, too, though recent articles say that he was foaming at the mouth or vomiting. I'm trying to find an article that mentions Alex and the pink foam, but they may have been updated. No official cause of death was given for Tammy, I don't think, but Alex's death was caused by "blood clots wedged into the arteries of his lungs". So, if Tammy's autopsy was able to determine something similar to blood clots in the lungs, that may be very telling. Apparently, a pink frothy discharge from the mouth is common in many deaths due to the shut down of the lungs. Kind of a coincidence for both of them, though, huh? And with this much death following in the wake of Lori and Chad, they seem to be all out of coincidences.

When it was mentioned about the allegations of murdering his wife, I would say that something flashed in his eyes and he even moved his tongue in a gesture of anger. I think if this man has any regrets, it`s because he failed to cremate his wife. Now it`s known how they got rid of their inconvenient people.

Lori is going to WISH she had been tried first, because you KNOW the lawyer for Chad is going to make her solely responsible. And if she had been tried first, her attorney could have thrown him fully under the bus.

Pleading not guilty it's simply a procedural retaining of rights, not an omission of guilt.

To see Kay tearing up, even when Chad’s charges were read for Tammy Daybell moved me deeply. Also, I’m so glad that she and Colby can comfort one another through this. 💜. Also, anyone have any guesses or theories on what was discussed in the Judge’s chambers prior to the arraignment?

How were they raised to commit such a horrible thing? Their actions during their life wasn't noticed. The police that were called to help lori's dead husband should be held accountable for his death along with the children.

Also, sometimes if there isn't a protective custody unit, they are put into solitary for their own protection, which is utterly miserable.

@@idontcare1481 I'm not so sure about that. An unlikeable defense attorney can doom a client before a jury, and Prior is SO unlikeable it's almost an art form. It's almost like he's deliberately making himself out to behave like a comic book villain.
Certainly more competent and more experienced than Means, but I don't know how his personality will sway anyone. People tend to hate him on sight. Especially when he opens his mouth. Bullying police officers and FBI analysts and team leaders and crying to the judge about their straightforward answers spells doom imo.

I say Lori and her brother killed them afterwards her brother took them to his house and Chad buried them and burned Tylee. However, he placed the seed with the Zombie list. His wife however is a whole different story.

I think Lori put something in her children's food or drink causing there deaths, Alex maybe took part in it but for sure moved the children to Chad's backyard and Chad is responsible for the death of his wife Tammy by also putting something in her food or drink. Lori is guilty for her part in Charles' murder which Alex did do. Maybe Alex was somehow slipped something too because he knew everything and was a threat. I think Alex also took a shot at Tammy in her driveway a week prior to her death and took a shot at Lori's nieces husband in Arizona. What a mess of nasty evil people that conspired to commit senseless murders for insurance money and getting unwanted good people out of there way.

I’ve never responded so much on the internet or any subject! But they meaning Chad and Alex and Lori make so angry! I before now didn’t agree with the death penalty but this case has changed my mind! It’s very premeditated and clearly thought out! I for the first time believe he should get the death penalty and I wasn’t sure until today because I thought he would finally be honest and ask for forgiveness but he is so sick he believes that this lawyer will safe him! It’s clear as day the amount guilt on hands But America today who knows because look at Casey Anthony and other such cases?? I pray that the jury in this case do the right thing!

I think maybe Lori’s inability or unwillingness to accept that she is not may be part of the reason she has been deemed incompetent. It's just an off topic thing that annoys me: Mr. Prior seems so narcissistic that he can't even wait in respect for the judge to excuse the court, but has to be "in charge" by asking to be excused. I respect this judge's patience! I would probably say, "Quite frankly, Mr. Prior, you can wait politely like everyone else."
That's actually incredibly common for lawyers to do and attorneys often ask to be excused before the judge says anything. I agree the lawyer acts a bit pompous, but not every single thing he does is some sort of slight or a sign of narcissism. Asking to be excused is considered good manners in a court room. There's no need to wait for a judge to excuse everyone first and defense attorneys often do so because judges tend to sit on the bench and may speak with counsel while not requiring the other party present (such as inquiring about updates on another case).
