- CHANDLER, Arizona - Disturbing new details and text messages released Thursday indicate the killing of Charles Vallow was planned and reveal more about Lori Vallow Daybell’s extreme religious beliefs.
Arizona investigators say a series of crimes that surrounded the July 11, 2019, shooting death of Vallow was not a “coincidence or justifiable.” Local and federal investigations have also uncovered more information surrounding the deaths of Lori’s two children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, as well as the death of Tammy Daybell, the wife of Lori’s fifth husband, Chad Daybell.
The planning of Vallow’s death
Detectives say the first time evidence pointed at harm towards Vallow surfaced on Nov. 3, 2018. According to police, text messages between Lori and the now-widow of her brother Alex Cox were uncovered after seizing a phone when Cox died. The name of widow and friend of Lori is redacted in court documents. However, it is known Cox was married to a woman named Zulema Pastenes at the time of her death.
Police say that on Nov. 3, 2018, a person texted Lori saying “she was told by God that she is to protect” her. Then in January 2019, a person told Lori, “She had a vision that she could create storms and fire and will have the eye of the Lord.” A month later, Lori texted a person saying Charles was blocking her gifts. A redacted portion of the conversation that refers to causing harm to Vallow follows. In the conversations, Vallow is referred to as a dark spirit called “Hiplos” or “Ned.”
Investigators say Lori believed she was an exalted goddess directed to lead the 144,000 with Chad to prepare for the end of the world. Both Chad and Lori believe they had “extraordinary abilities,” including teleportation, causing harm to others, calling up natural disasters, praying away demonic spirits and having visions.
On June 3, 2019, Lori texted a person saying, “Just got home and got jj to sleep. Let’s go spiritually tonight and work on him. We give the timing to the Lord but we don’t need to relent. This is war.” Then on June 19, 2019, a person texts Lori saying, “Oh and can you meet me at the temple in the morning? I have time tomorrow and we can work on Hiplos.”
Also, in June, investigators say Lori searched the internet for Social Security disability information. Police theorize that because of a message sent to Chad, Lori determined she would receive $4,000 a month in Social Security benefits if Vallow died.
More redacted messages follow, but this time Cox joins in the conversation. In the weeks leading up to Vallow’s death, the unnamed friend, Cox and Chad all converse about Vallow, referring to him as “Hiplos.”
“There is no obvious communication found between Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell to show that he was directly involved with the planning of Charles Vallow’s murder,” police wrote in the document.
Just two days before Vallow was shot and killed, Lori discovered a planned “intervention” from Vallow and her other brother. Vallow had asked Lori to come clean about her relationship with Chad, or he would tell Tammy Daybell of their relationship.
The day Charles Vallow was killed
Around 7:35 a.m. on July 11, 2019, Vallow arrived at Lori’s home to pick up JJ. Vallow texted a person whose name has been redacted that Cox was there, and the person responded that Lori and Cox were planning something. Soon after, Vallow was shot and killed.
Investigators began their homicide investigation and interviewed “all pertinent parties.” During the investigation, police say there was concern about a bullet strike on the ground near Vallow’s body. Investigators were also concerned about the timeline of events.

I don't understand why Alex wasn't arrested the day of charles' murder...it is not self-defense if you can leave the room to get a gun then return and shoot someone..you have to be intitmemt danger. I feel the police department dropped the ball..if they wound have done gsr test and blood on the sink stabbed and tested..just numerous things NOT handled properly.

Yes, they really dropped the ball. Alex had a record as a felon from tasing Joseph Ryan, he had done time for it. Also Charles had gone to the police and told them they were going to murder him. It's more than bad policing, it appears to be intentionally looking the other way. Seems to me one of the people in Lori and Chad's group, Jason Mow was a policeman prior to this.

The police should have known it was foul play once they learned from the autopsy that the second bullet entered at his ribs and exited in the shoulder area. When was Charles’ autopsy?

Absolutely, Charles was with Lori’s brother Alex the night that Alex assaulted Husband number 3 “Tylee’s father” he assaulted him with a stun gun. Isn’t it ironic that Alex then kills Charles. I know that having lost a lot of my family back to back the last few years I began to have major anxiety and anxiety attacks and the more I tried to conceal it and keep it to myself it began to manifest itself in physical sickness and I ended up in the hospital and almost died. I hope that she’s able to lay it out and grieve soon

Julie had a series of videos declaring Chad innocent and that he most definitely had the children safely hidden away from abusive grandparents. She explained they were partners. I think it’s strange that police who are usually suspicious of everything didn’t think it was strange that after Lori and Charles just got into a fight that her brother who is visiting would just stay home with an angry Charles and not leave with his sister Niece and Nephew. It also doesn’t make any sense that after someone just threatened you with a bat that you would then go to your room and retrieve your gun. He could’ve stayed in the room and called police but instead he goes back out to a hostile situation to intimidate Charles. The police should’ve caught that his life was never in immediate threat if he had time to go retrieve his gun.
They were "smitten" is what it seemed to me. Even when she was in the station giving an interview before Charles was murdered, when he was trying to force her to get help, the cop acts like he's going to ask her out.
On one of the police videos I saw recently it shows the responding officer making that point to the detectives when they showed up at the scene. He said "he (Alex didn't stay in his room and call us". Sounded like he wasn't happy and wanted Alex charged but the detectives and higher ups are the ones who decide that.
I always thought it was terribly suspicious she would leave them fighting and take Charles rent a car. To know now she had his phone as well...Seems to me it was a setup. He was probably already dead when she left the house.

This is why I subscribe to East Idaho News, even though I live in Europe. Nate is a fantastic journalist and has broken so many stories about this awful story. Julie Rowe is the 'Julie' in the papers. She is a nutcase who had many books released by Chad Daybell. She was excommunicated by the LDS Church because of her writings. She claimed to have visions. Julie thought Chad Daybell would make her his wife once Tammy died. If you Google her you will find videos of interviews showing her strange beliefs.

When Lori moved to Rexburg and the police came to do a welfare check on JJ, Lori told the cops that her husband (Charles) and her brother (Adam) wanted her dead for her life insurance. So that is another whopper she told that was something that she herself had done.

I thought it was "Nick" Schneider. Not that it matters, Nick, Ned, NUTS. Listening to Zac Cox, he said that Uncle Alex was always "a weird guy" and "off," and I don't know if it was Melanie Gibb, but someone said that Alex was so gullible that the Chin had him convinced that his mission on Earth was to protect his sister and his niece. Gibb said that the Chin was the one who "assigned" Zombie status.
So it went something like this: Chad deemed someone "dark," and dispatched "Warrior Alex" to "vanquish the Zombies." Anyone who interfered with the happiness of Blonde-zilla and Melani P., including Charles Vallow, Tammy Daybell, Brandon Boudreaux, Tylee and JJ were deemed by the Chin to be "zombies" who had to be "vanquish."
All I care about at this point, is whether the State can prove beyond reasonable doubt that Alex Cox didn't act ALONE. Listening to these texts being read, i.e. Blonde-zilla's words about "before we got rid of him," she's DONE!

Zulema is up to her eyeballs in all of this and she got case immunity??? No wonder she asked the Detective if she was under arrest at hospital when Alex died. Yes, but it could be argued that the "we" was Lori and her brother or other(s).
That was told to Chad 7/18/19 a week after Charles died. But think about this is that Chad increased Family's life insurance one month before she died. So maybe Chad learned this from Lori about life insurance before they get rid of someone.
Julie Rowe. She was posting videos defending Chad when they were on the run to Hawaii. She is tied to their cult and was convincing backwoods Missouri Mormons to sell their property, give her the money, as she was telling them she has visions she was to gather them to live in tent cities. My friend was caught up in it and all the people were moving onto her property. Most of the Ward was involved in following Julie Roe

Oh they had jobs alright Z was a professional cuddler and also was a predictor of earthquakes. Alex was the Hench man of the family. Lori's job was to find Rich husbands. But a real paying job where they take taxes out and you get a paycheck every week or every two weeks no they didn't have that kind of job only those kind of jobs were held by decent respectable people like Charles and Brandon.
One of Lori's brothers sided with Charles, along with the brother's son. They were going to do the intervention, but Lori's mother and sister sided with Lori. After Charles was killed they still sided with Lori and ostracized the brother and the son. At that point, the brother and his son were scared Alex was going to kill them too and they immediately left town.

They believed Lori when she told them that Charles was trying to take the kids and other things. They thought she was a good mother, and I think they tried to be loyal because she was family. I'm sure this whole situation has been very difficult for them, especially because they've had to accept hard truths about someone they thought was good.

@@Sunset-chaser777 yes, I agree. I have personal experience with a close family member who suffered from mental illness. It slowly just crept in, it seemed. She was "eccentric" from a young age, fun and funny. She was a great mother, like a super mom. Over time, her condition deteriorated. If you didn't live day in and day out with her, you might not notice the changes. She was my daughter. I know the heartbreaking reality, but to this day there are family members who defend her and saw nothing wrong. I'm raising her four children.

I was able to do so in my daughter's case, and I think her children are alive and well because of it. She was going to take them into the secret tunnels in the Arizona desert to keep them safe.

The fact that Lori left to go do mundane errands leads me to think that she was trying to create an alibi with her receipts. Meanwhile, Alex waited it out in order to give her time to create that alibi. She was certainly at the house earlier because she had Charle’s phone. He was likely already shot before she left with that phone. The rush to go buy flip flops while Alex waited to make his callmakes it seem to me that Lori likely fired the gun at least once.
Flip flops were for the pool party to celebrate murdering Charles ... "Sorry, neighbors" ... Death penalty is not enough for everyone involved
Lori was at the house when shots were fired, then left for just long enough to get breakfast, flip flops, etc., then came back to the scene. Charles was in town for an intervention. He did not willingly let Lori have his phone.
The fact that Alex waited 43 minutes before calling police and misled 9-1-1 into thinking he had called immediately-plus he called Lori first to check in before calling 9-1-1- indicates he was quite possibly buying her some time to build an alibi.
Flip flops can be purchased any time of day. No need to buy them urgently while the husband lies dead and the brother sits around waiting for Lori to create proof that she wasn’t there when Alex said he shot the gun.
Sure, maybe she was eager to start the celebration. She’s so creepy. But, she knew Charles was shot when she left and she purposefully and quickly made several suspiciously unimportant stops before coming back to the house to talk with police. It’s odd enough to warrant closer inspection and some doubt over Alex’s claim to be the shooter.

I don't know why it took the cops so long to bring the charges re Charles if they had gotten Alex's phone shortly after he died in December of 2019?!?! And they originally closed it out. I mean glad she's being charged now, but WTH?!?

I'm sure that you are right. A judge needs to step in and declare her competent at some point. Competency can be decided by a judge.
And a good point. While everyone seems to see this as a slam dunk, could in fact be used to bolster a "not fit for trial" stance since courts theie don't recognize an insanity plea.

Just the fact that Charles was stood over and shot again to be sure he was dead, should have been enough to show it wasn't just self-defense. It could have even been Lori who pulled the trigger one of those times.
I can't believe they let either of them continue to roam about freely after that.
I agree that Lori might have fired the shots. Who knows if police tested for fingerprints or residue. It’s frustrating that so many assume it was Alex only because he said he did it. The time stamps from this new document show that Lori I could very well have pulled the trigger, then left to go create an alibi while Alex waited for her to get some receipts. Alex then called Lori for an update on her progress before calling the police.
