You should set aside an evening sometime and watch the 1974 Monaco Grand Prix if you haven't already. Back then, powersliding wasn't how you saved an otherwise fast lap, _it was how you set a fast lap to begin with_
i would say the 1996 Ferrari he was driving, was not the car he liked. It probably was naturally oversteering more than he liked, yet he controlled it, pushing it beyond its normal limits.
Gerhard Berger sliding all around Monaco Cirquit ... those were the days where there was no highlights after the races because the races itself were packed with action. Two hours of pure excitement ... and today, hm?
I'd say the focus has shifted over the years. Nowadays the entertainment aspect of the sport seems to be all about (DRS-assisted) overtakes and the tactical game. People are always talking about how we need more overtakes. Back in the 90's there were less overtakes and tactics were more basic and less discussed about. But on the other hand, just watching the cars being driven around the track was much more entertaining, so that kind of made up for it. Personally, I think overtakes are a bit overrated anyway. When it comes to racing, I care more about the battles - one driver is defending, the other is looking for a way to get past. Sometimes the overtake happens, but that's not as important as the battle itself. DRS allows faster cars to overtake and build gap to slower cars more quickly, which reduces the time drivers are actually fighting for positions. I think the one thing which DRS genuinely improves are those rare situations when cars with evenly matched pace race against each other.
Actually sliding is slower than grip driving time wise..(not talking about slight over steer) And the sport has been doing it’s best to reduce the chances of having to do it. That’s why the way cars run looks boring.
Micheal driving with an over steering style is actually really smart. Think about it if he is getting as much power down as he can without slipping, he is putting the car to the absolute limit and leaving each corner as fast as the tires allow him. Very smart

@@AndyFromBeaverton oh 100%. How crisp that powerslide was with the amount of angle, speed and the way he snaps it back without losing much speed is awesome. If only Formula one had shorter wheelbases and less downforce, I’m hoping next years start of the new age ground affect era will bring back those amazing slides.
Even though Alesi was one of my favorite drivers... he had nothing on Schumacher. Jean was overdriving his cars. Constantly. Schumacher always knew about his and the cars limits. The way he played with this terrible 96 Ferrari in the rain... man, this guy must be an alien.
Apparently he could have stayed for 1996, but he did not want to be a second driver. Similarly to you, I was a fan, but he was really fighting with the car, rather than driving them and there are rumours that he was not great in setting up the car. There was one video on Driver61's channel about driving on the limit does not mean sliding constantly and he explained pretty well why Jean's style was ineffective. Besides, the V12 made the car really unstable during deceleration which was not liked by neither Berger or Alesi. However, this did work with MS's driving style and he really liked the V12 and preferred over the new V10. Unfortunately making the car instable wasn't the only issue withe V12. It was heavy, drank a lot and lost quite a bit of its power during a race.
Shame that brilliant Alesi never became World champion. He was one who had it in him. But damn, I miss the late 80's/ beginning 90's F1. (Mansell, Alesi, Berger, and of course Ayrton Senna!!) That kind of F1 is never to be seen again, cars of today do not tolerate that aggressive style.
Alesi on the ragged edge was a joy to behold, that 412T2 may be beautiful but it was not easy to throw around and slide the way he did, I've never seen anyone drive like that since (probably because the tyres wouldn't last) but its just astonishing.
Hahah, I still can remember an article in an F1 Racing Magazine in '96 about how F1 cars can't really do a powerslide anymore. And now I'm here, 21 years later, watching a video where Schumacher is sliding around in his F310 like a crazy.
In all my years watching F1, I have never seen anyone with better car control than Jean Alesi. I wish I was around when Gilles Villeneuve was driving, as he was pretty insane too apparently.
I simply cannot believe I found this video! I was there at Estoril at that corner (timestamp in video: 6:53) and saw this succession of outrageous power slides from Berger. I was 15 back then, but that's one of the things I vividly remember from that weekend!
His own fault. He had an offer from Williams but went to the mess that was Ferrari instead. That was a mistake which destroyed his career. I don't really understand that decision. Brilliant driver, but his passion betrayed him. It's a crying shame we never got to see him in a dominant Williams, just imagine...
Alesi drove the 1995 Ferrari the one which Schumacher tested at the end of 95 when he joined the team and said he would've won the championship easily in that 1995 Ferrari compared to his Benetton
Schumacher's 1996 footage shows what a pile of shit that Ferrari was in that year, Michael had to drive that thing past the limit so much to be barely able to compete with the 2 Williams
If there were points for powerslides and style. Alesi would be king . Off the charts with his throwing that Ferrrari around. As much as it killed his times, it was GLORIOUS to watch 👏👏👏👏👏
In France, everyone see him as a driver who only could crash. That's so stupid... Hopefully the french press dont spread his own sh*t around the world.
Bad luck lol. He was handed a Williams drive on a plate but rejected the offer to go to the Ferrari mess because passion and shit. His own fault, simple as that...
A lot of this no longer happens after the 'big cars' came in 2017. Shame! The big tires, aero and whatnot somehow make it impossible to have actual slides without nearly loosing it or loosing a bunch of time!
Everything is relative. People were then comparing to 60s/70s. The same is true today, they over steer even less today than in 90s and 2000s. You kind of have to watch with much more sensitive eyes and process with higher speed/time.
excuse me but these ARE F1 DRIVERS these guys DID ABSOLUTELY DRIVE THEIR CARS and were not being driven by them. Pure car control and balls of steel. No contest when compared with 2020s kiddos.
Old_Race_Pic_Stories The cars back then didnt have as much power or grip as the cars in the video. Its harder to drive an early 90’s f1 car to the limit due to the twitchiness and the huge power.
Sliding is one thing but it takes a little bit more than a man with two sacks to slide around monaco.

Berger had some really nice powerslides here, great stuff.
CT
Schumacher was the only driver to completely stay on-line while sliding the car. Legend.
Berger drifting in Monaco 95 was insane!!! Big balls right there.
I heard Schumacher had an oversteery style but this video takes that to another level.
Great job with that compilation :D
Panther sdkfz yeah he used the throttle to push the car round the corners!! well u do need to be on the throttle to have a fast lap.
It's one thing to setup the car to have a loose rear end and another thing to do a powerslide. But you are right about MS.
